By Laja Thomas & DAPO AKINREFON LAGOS— National coordinator of Oodua Peoples Congress, OPC, Otunba Gani Adams, has called on Federal Government to rescind its decision on the planned removal of fuel subsidy. Also leadership of National Association of Nigerian Students, NANS, has kicked against the planned removal of subsidy from petroleum products by the Federal Government. Adams argued that the removal of the subsidy will lead to inflation in the economy, adding that Nigeria cannot bear any irrational economic ideology that would make lives difficult for the people. The former NANS leaders in a statement by Ogaga Ifowodo, Abdul Mahmud , Nasiru Kura, all former NANS Presidents, said “if subsidy does exist as claimed by the government, then it was fabricated by and for those who allocate or own oil blocks and petroleum import licences.” It does not subsidise living for the masses, who groan daily from the penal servitude of surviving on less than N150, a day to which their successive rulers have sentenced them.” http://www.vanguardngr.com/2011/11/gani-adams-enjoins-fg-to-reverse-on-subsidy/ |
A group of strong Igbo men and women - mostly professionals and serving/former public office holders - have condemned in strong terms the incessant and targetted killings of their kinsmen in the Northern part of Nigeria. The group called Igboville is an Igbo-only social network with over 3,600 members in Nigeria and the Diaspora. It has no political affiliation but firmly focused on all aspects of Igbo life, well being and progress. Below is the text of their Press Release: "We the members of Igboville wish to condemn in the strongest term possible the continuing targeting and killing of Igbo men, women and children living or working in parts of the North. Most worrisome is the targeting and killing of Igbo youth corpers who were posted to the North to serve their fatherland. While we are yet to come to terms with the gruesome and heartless murder of Ikechukwu Ukeoma and his colleagues last April, our attention has been drawn to the merciless killing of Eucharia Remmy and others in Damaturu, Yobe State. It is totally unacceptable and MUST stop forthwith. On behalf of Igbo professionals in Nigeria and the Diaspora, we hereby demand the following: 1. NYSC should immediately cancel the posting of any Igbo person to the volatile areas of the North. Obviously, neither the NYSC nor the state governments can guarantee their safety. 2. All Igbos currently serving in the volatile areas of the north should be re deployed to the South East, South West or South South, till security conditions improve. 3. Employers and NYSC should not sanction Igbo Corpers that abandoned their primary assignments because of security concerns. Life first. 4. The governors of south east states should immediately meet with their northern counterparts to map out strategies to ensure the security of life and properties of Ndigbo living in the North. Immediate evacuation of those in harms way should be carried out without further delay. 5. The federal and relevant state governments should ensure adequate compensation for our people who lost their lives and properties in recurring violence across the North. While we continue to believe and have hope in one Nigeria, that is the greatest country in the world, we will not support the blood of Ndigbo being used to water the tree of Nigeria unity. We have shown sufficient faith in the Nigerian project and that explains why our people are in all nooks and crannies of Nigeria spreading development, peace and love. Those targeting Ndigbo are basically targeting ONE Nigeria. We should not allow them to win. Igboville is therefore calling on all Igbo youths and groups to please avoid acts of retaliation in any form. We are christians and our traditions strongly forbid blood shed. We are also calling on the federal government of Nigeria led by Dr Goodluck Jonathan to rise to it's responsibility of protection of lives and properties of Ndigbo and Nigerians. Every necessary measure must be taken to preserve life and defeat the insurgents, who represent nothing but darkness. The federal government should also as a matter of urgency convene a National Conference involving all nationalities that make up Nigeria. This will enable all aggrieved groups and interests table their issues for discussion and remedy. We cannot continue to pretend that all is well with our unity. Not when active war is being levied on the Federal Republic by a group whose best stated objective is to carve out an Islamic Republic from our current structure. We believe that it is the duty of the federal government to create an avenue for demands such as that to be peacefully tabled and discussed in the spirit of oneness and brotherly love. God Bless Igboville God Bless Ndigbo God Bless Nigeria." LONDON (AFP) – Oil giant Shell should commit $1 billion (700,000 euros) as a first step to clean up the Niger Delta following two devastating oil spills in 2008, rights groups said Thursday. Shell has accepted responsibility for the spills in the southern Nigerian state of Ogoniland that affected the Bodo fishing community and has agreed to pay compensation, which is currently being decided in the British courts. But Amnesty International and the Centre for Environment, Human Rights and Development (CEHRD) accused Shell in a report of failing to act quickly enough to fix the damage and demanded the Anglo-Dutch group make the billion-dollar contribution. “It is time this multi-billion-dollar company owns up, cleans up and pays up,” said Aster van Kregten, Nigeria researcher for London-based Amnesty International. “Shell’s failure to promptly stop and clean up oil spills in Bodo has devastated the lives of tens of thousands of people.” A spokesman for Shell’s Nigerian operations insisted discussions were underway with the government to establish a clean-up fund for the Niger Delta and said efforts had been made to clean up after the Bodo spills. Ogoniland has been blighted by oil pollution for decades and a landmark UN environment agency report released in August said the region might require the world’s biggest ever clean-up. The United Nations Environment Programme report called for the oil industry and the Nigerian government to contribute $1 billion for a clean-up fund. Thursday’s report however focused solely on the Bodo spills of 2008. The Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria (SPDC), the Shell subsidiary which operates a joint venture in Nigeria in which the state oil company has a major stake, insisted its bid to clean up after the spills had been hampered. “The reality is that our efforts to undertake (a) clean-up in Bodo have been hampered by the repeated impact of saboutage and bunkering spills,” the tapping of pipelines to steal oil, said an SPDC spokesman. But van Kregten said: “This claim has been strongly disputed by the communities and NGOs who point out that the process of collecting data on oil spills is flawed.” The SPDC spokesman said the subsidiary was already implementing many of the recommendations in the report. “SPDC is committed to working with the Nigerian government and other stakeholders to improve the environment in the Niger Delta,” he said. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2011/11/shell-must-pay-1-bn-for-niger-delta-clean-up-group/ |
By Samuel Oyadongha, Yenagoa Four persons were killed Wednesday night in Yenagoa the Bayelsa State capital in a renewed orgy of violence reportedly unleashed by suspected cultists while several others sustained gunshot injuries. The violent attack, which occurred in the densely populated Ekeki suburb of Yenagoa in the heart of the capital city at about 7pm caused serious pandemonium in the troubled capital city as residents scamper for safety. Though the reason for the attack could not be ascertained, it was gathered that some youths suspected to be cultists armed with the deadly AK 47 in a mafiaso styled operation drove into the Ekeki suburb which is host to the major motor park in the state capital and embarked on shooting spree. Two persons were reportedly hit by the invaders bullets, killing them on the spot while two others sustained serious gunshot wound and later gave up the ghost at the Federal Medical Centre where they were taken for treatment. The reverberating sound of gunshots that shattered the night forced most of the relaxation spots and retail outlets within the vicinity of the violent attack to hurriedly shutdown. Motorists approaching the Ekeki suburb of Yenagoa on the Chief Melford Okilo road were forced to make u-turn and drove against traffic while some abandoned their vehicles and took to their heels for fear of being caught in the cross fire. Also residents relaxing outside their homes were forced to beat quick retreat to the comfort of their bedroom for fear of being hit by flying bullet. However the timely intervention of men of the Joint Task Force for the Niger Delta codenamed Operation Restore Hope and the police prevented the situation from resulting in the death of more persons. Three suspects were reportedly arrested by the security operatives who not only succeeded in repealing the rampaging gun-totting youths but ensure the return of normalcy in the area. This reporter who visited the scene of the attack observed armed policemen conducting stop and search of every vehicle and passersby at the intersection connecting Azikoro road and Chief Melford Okilo rape while armed soldiers were patrolling the area. Contacted the state Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Eguavoen Emokpae confirmed the incident. According to him, four persons were killed and three suspects had been arrested and helping the police in its ongoing investigation. His words, “I can authoritatively confirm that four persons were killed . Two died on the spot of the attack while two later died in the hospital. Three suspects were arrested and they are helping the command in ongoing investigation while we are on the trail of others.” http://www.vanguardngr.com/2011/11/four-killed-others-injured-in-fresh-bayelsa-shooting/ |

Lagos – The Ghana Investment Promotion Centre (GIPC) says Nigeria’s total number of registered projects in Ghana from September 1994 to June 2011 were 184 estimated at 1.5 billion dollars (N225 billion). Mr George Aboagye, the Chief Executive Officer of the agency, made this known on Wednesday at the Ghana-Nigeria Business Forum held at the ongoing 2011 Lagos International Trade Fair. Aboagye said that Nigeria’s investment in Ghana was also expected to grow by 500 million dollars by 2015. He said that Nigeria’s investments were in the agriculture, manufacturing, building, liaison service, tourism, general and export trade sectors of the Ghanaian economy. Aboagye said that Nigeria was his country’s fifth and sixth largest source of investment in terms of value and number of projects registered respectively. He said that the relations between the two countries had been very warm, cordial and beneficial. “Ghana is richly endowed with human and natural resources. “These resources present numerous business opportunities in oil and gas, agriculture, manufacturing, tourism, energy and property development,” Aboagye said. He said that the priority sectors for investments in Ghana were oil and gas services, energy, infrastructure, agriculture, manufacturing, tourism, ICT and financial services. Aboagye said that Nigerians had the type of entrepreneurship that Ghana would be looking up to. “If a Nigerian comes to do business, the knowledge and experience he has will be very useful to Ghana,” he said. Newly appointed manager of the Super Eagles, Stephen Keshi has looked inwards and invited Nigeria Premier League hot shot, Jude Aneke to replace injured West Bromwich Albion striker, Osaze Odemwingie who has been ruled out of the two international friendly matches between Zambia and Botswana. Aneke, a Kaduna United goal monger, who has emerged Nigeria’s all-time highest goal scorer having netted 20 goals this season, with two matches to go, will welcome the new development as life-time opportunity to impress the new Super Eagles gaffer who will be overseeing the team for the first time after taking over from Samson Siasia who was sacked after failing to qualify the the team for the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations in Gabon and Equatorial Guinea. Aneke was recently decamped by the Nigeria Olympic team coach, Austin Eguavoen in preference for a Bangladesh-based player http://www.vanguardngr.com/2011/11/keshi-replaces-osaze-with-aneke/ |
