Nairaland as a website is best kept simple.
I remember those years when I was seeking admission into the university, the only site my small tecnho China phone could browse was nairaland, and it helped by giving me the needed information.
Most websites that are upgraded becomes unreachable to phones with light weight web browser i.e phones that cannot use chrome, Mozilla and the rest of them. An example is livescores which can no longer be accessed by most opera mini versions.

Some.of these things too can be implemented programmatically. Two subjects can be forbidden from running consecutively and concurrently. Consecutively for the sake of students and concurrently for the sake of teachers.
Also that of avoiding too many consecutive periods can be done. When the allocator algorithm allocates periods out, most likely at random, it just needs to select subject period based on a combo of different and multippe criteria each time.
Subject timetable share a lot with football league timetables. Locations, team proximity and blockbuster match sequence are quite similar to some of the concerns raised here.

Talking from experience. If only you can have about 200 accounts to derail careers of web dev then 500k members for Nairaland may even be a lil bit generous estimate.

WordPress is tried and tested when it comes to non scalable web apps. It gives you a lot of options for web apps with 20-300k records of post types.
