PoliticsRe: Nigerians Spent ₦259.7 Billion On Electricity In 3 Months Amid Epileptic Supply by respect80(m): 6:49am On Dec 23, 2021
backbencher:
The reason why Nigeria does not have 24 hours power supply is simple

We aren't paying for 24 hour supply, we are.paying for less than that.

The reason is in the article. The goverment is paying a subsidy.

The reason why the goverment is paying a subsidy is because the discos ad gencos would collapse financially without it.

Especially since the law establishing them made them charge less than the production cost of power.

In 2019,discos were selling power at N20 to 30 naira per kWh. Meanwhile it cost 53 naira to make that one kwh of power.

Now it costs over N73 to make one kwh of power. Discos now charge between 49 to 71 naira per kWh. Most areas pay less than N60 .

You see?

Discos aren't allowed to charge the kind of tarrifs that would enable them make enough cash to pay for much needed improvements. Then there are the nearly 40% of customers, rich poor and even goverment agencies who use power for free.No paying. Nothing.

The law allowing for the privatisation of power did not allow the power companies the right to make a profit . Thus as a result, there isn't enough money to fix things

That is why we are.in.darkness.

Nigerians have to be ready to pay for 24 hour power. You cannot pay N3000 for a car costing 4 million naira. That is what we have been doing for the power sector

For more.on the situation, read the PWC paper "solving the liquidity crunch in the Nigerian power sector"

A page from the report is below. Worth reading.
Thanks for the explanation, but how much do you think it should cost an average household to have 24 hours power?
In as much as I agree with you on this, I also wish to draw your attention to the fact that there are also many households paying more and getting less power. The last time I was in the village, I noticed that many of this distribution companies were serving villagers living close to some semi urban areas the same amount of monthly bill based on estimated billing whereas the villagers were getting far less supply than their counterparts in the nearby semi - urban areas.
At a point, I took a closer look at the whole situation and I realized that on the average, the villagers were getting a total of less than 48 hours supply in a whole month period and they were still getting the same bill of between 5k to 7k as their counterparts living in semi urban areas even though this villagers lack heavy power consuming appliances.
Note that with a sound generator, one can get far more than 48 hours power for 7k.
So in summary, I agree with your explanation. However, there is also a good percentage of people paying more for less based on their current calculations.

PoliticsRe: Electoral Bill: 81 Senators Sign To Override President Buhari by respect80(m): 12:19pm On Dec 22, 2021
nzeobi:
Your article is long but let me give some hints.

What stops a man who gives delegates 3 million each to vote him from paying and inducing party members during direct primaries.

In a Case where there are reports of manipulations or outright falsification of results as noticed in all direct primaries conducted so in Nigeria what will happen.

Since direct primaries cannot hold in some wards in Nigeria today cos of insecurity what becomes the faith of party members in that ward.

How can you hold an election without knowing the number of people that are expected to vote
Try to understand my point. I'm not in support of direct primaries at this point, but I'm only trying to tell you that direct primaries would have been better if the resources were available and affordable with the current economic state of the nation.
The man who gives 3 million naira each to maybe 100 delegates to vote him in indirect primary may be needing 1 or 2 billion naira to distribute to individuals in other to make any significant difference in the case of direct primaries instead of 300 million if indirect primary is used.
All in all, I would suggest that the main focus of this electoral bill should be to make provision for the the actualization of successful electronic transmission of results.
Once the FG is able to fund and actualize the successful and hitch free electronic transmission of results, it will be very easy to make amendments for direct primaries.
Lastly, only individuals who are registered and card carrying members of a political party will be allowed to vote in such elections. So, it will become mandatory for political parties to have a database for their registered members which they will have to submit to INEC.
The only controversy now will be that, what will be the fate of individuals who may be interested in more than one political party?
Would they have to become registered members of every political party they are interested in so as to be able to participate in the election of flag bearers at the primary stages of elections?
PoliticsRe: Electoral Bill: 81 Senators Sign To Override President Buhari by respect80(m): 11:12am On Dec 22, 2021
nzeobi:
I agree with some of the things you said. But stop believing that direct primaries allows the candiates to test their popularity in the Nigerian context cos it's more fraudulent and easy to manipulate cos you don't know the number of people that will be voting.
Look at what Ahmed gulak did in IMO State.
Look at the primaries APC conducted in anambra and osun state.
For the issue of direct primaries being easy to manipulate. It's not as you think because the votes for direct primaries will only be casted by registered and card carrying members of each political party.
The questions that are left to be answered now include
1.will it now become the responsibility of the masses to be registered members of all the political parties out there?
2.If yes, does the bill make provisions to actualize such, especially the time, financial aspect and the will of the masses to strive to become a registered and a card carrying member of all the political parties out there?
3.If no, how do they plan to achieve this because for instance, an individual may be a registered member of PDP and prefers to vote for a PDP governorship candidate but may prefer to vote for an APC senatorial candidate. How can such individual participate in the process of voting at the primary stages of election?

After given this a thought, I feel that if there's no provision for individuals to be a registered member of all the political parties out there so as to be able to participate in the election process of an individual to be the flag bearer of each political party then things should be left the way they are. parties should be allowed to decide between direct or indirect primaries for themselves.
Another alternative I thought of is for INEC to make provision on the ballot paper where individuals can express their choice by indicating that they are not interested in any of the candidates provided by the political parties contending for a position and if such vote turns out to win the majority, then such election should be declared null and void and the candidates involved be disqualified. cheesy
The masses shouldn't be left to choose between demon and Satan all the time cheesy

PoliticsRe: Electoral Bill: Gbajabiamila Reads Buhari’s Letter by respect80(m): 1:36pm On Dec 21, 2021
The conduct of direct primaries across the 8,809 wards across the length and breadth of the country will lead to a significant spike in the cost of conducting primary elections by parties as well as increase in the cost of monitoring such elections by INEC who has to deploy monitors across these wards each time a party is to conduct direct primaries for the presidential, gubernatorial and legislative posts”, the President said amid other reasons.
So every other thing in the bill has to be rejected just because of this?
This administration never fails to demonstrate how clueless it is when it comes to matters of utmost importance.

This is the kind of country we live in.
A country where thinking rationally is a criminal offense.
A country where criminals are celebrated.
A country where normal is perceived as abnormal.
A country where someone who is neither a pioneer of any profitable idea nor a solution to any major problem is a billionaire.
A country where justice is for the highest bidder.
A country where her Lady Justice is not blind.
A country where stealing what belongs to the masses is tagged as success and celebrated in churches and mosques.
A country with double standards. One for the poor and one for the rich.
A country where human life has no value.
A country where some people are not suppose to work but are suppose to eat.
A country where all her youth talks about is sex, BBN, Bet9ja, Drugs and internet fraud.

Yahaya Bello is a calamity to Kogi State and his only achievement is taking Kogi back to 20 years ago and 20 years of suffering ahead.

It shall never be well with Buhari, Tinubu, INEC, APC and every other person responsible for foisting Yahaya Bello on kogites.

This is the height of misplaced priority and lack of critical thinking by the state government.
Instead of directly tackling the menace of illegal deforestation, they're banning the use and sales of charcoal without realizing that most of the woods used in the production of charcoal are leftover from the people felling trees for other major purposes such as furniture and other use.
Banning the use and sales of charcoal in the state won't have much significant impact on their environmental protection quest.
