Prof Yemi Osinbajo, the vice presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has said being broke is not Nigeria’s main problem but rather is the way it is being run and corruption. In a recent interview with Sahara Reporters, Osinbajo said the first thing the APC will do if they emerge winners at March 28 presidential elections, is to block corruption. Asked if he was prepared to become the president of Nigeria should anything bad happen to Buhari (like death) if he wins the elections, Osinbajo said: “I think that I’m certainly prepared to serve the nation in whatever capacity I’m elected to, or find myself in and I think that one of the key things we are presenting to the nation is a set of policies not individual. Gen buhari himself has made it clear that he is coming on a platform and this platform is a platform of change. We are looking at how to turn the direction of our country around.”http://www.naij.com/406367-if-anything-bad-happens-to-gmb-i-am-prepared-osinbajo.html |

TO avoid leaving their wives behind for “unbelievers”, Boko Haram insurgents were said to have been murdering their spouses asking them to wait in heaven for later reunion. Newly-liberated persons from Bama narrated how that many of the insurgents fearing that they would be captured and killed slaughtered their wives to prevent being inherited by “infidels.” Our correspondent was told that the insurgents who fled Bama for Gwoza, the last of the territories under them, swiftly slaughtered almost all their wives before the flight. One of the freed captives from Bama told journalists in Maiduguri on Wednesday evening that many of the insurgents’ wives were killed so that unbelievers would not remarry them. The source said the insurgents told the killed women that “we will not leave anyone of you because if unbelievers marry you when we get to heaven, there is no way we can meet again so we do this so that we can meet in heaven.” “The women pleaded with them but they refused and slaughtered them; we were seen as unbelievers because we didn’t accept their faith so we were spared,” the source added. Narrating their ordeal while in custody of the insurgents, she said, “It was as if heaven will fall; many lost their lives but we were kept in some houses so many things happened, my husband and children were killed but all I could remembered is that yesterday (Tuesday) we were brought to Maiduguri by military who saved us from them.” Meanwhile, troops of the Nigerian Army, who carried out the liberation of the Bama, Borno State, have discovered wells said to be loaded with corpses of people executed by retreating members of the Boko Haram Islamic Sect. An intelligence source said the victims were some of the hostages who might have resisted the insurgents during their period of occupation in Bama. Our correspondent learnt that several other corpses of victims of the terrorists were found by the Bama River. The terrorists, knowing that that they were going to lose the town to the soldiers, were said to have unleashed mayhem on the town, executing those whose religious ideologies conflicted with their own. The troops were also said to be interrogating some residents of Bama to ascertain their true identitihttp://www.punchng.com/news/escaping-boko-haram-terrorists-slaughter-wives/ |

Thirty one inmates of Kuje Prison in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, who sat for the 2014 Nov/Dec Senior Secondary School Examination (SSCE) were yesterday presented with their certificates by the representative of the Controller General of Prisons, DCP Musa Tanko. Speaking at the occasion, DCP Tanko reiterated the commitment of the Nigerian Prisons Service to humane confinement, reformation and rehabilitation of those in its custody, noting that assisting inmates to have access to educational opportunities at all levels is one notable way of keeping their hope of successful return to the larger society alive. Tanko stated that Kuje Prison has continued to record impressive inmates’ participation in external examinations since the programme started in 2010, which has culminated in close to 41 of the prisoners taking up various degree programmes in the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) special study centre in the prison. He thanked NUGA BEST, a non-governmental organisation, for sponsoring the registration of the inmates in 2014 and called on other good spirited members of the society to support this laudable human development project in the prison, particularly in the areas of free lecture delivery, supply of relevant textbooks/learning aids and means to facilitate early registration of candidates in order to give life a new meaning for those in incarceration. Statistics show that 38 prisoners sat for the examination, 31 results were released, while seven were withheld. Cumulatively, 67 distinctions, 94 credits, 73 passes and 41 failures were recorded.http://newsexpressngr.com/news/detail.php?news=10183&title=31-prison-inmates-receive-WAEC-certifictes

The Nigeria military on Monday said government troops have cleared Yobe State of Boko Haram terrorists. In a tweet Monday, the defence headquarters said Yobe, one of the three states under state of emergency due to insurgency attack in the region, was completely cleared of insurgents on Monday morning. “FLASH: Troops have this morning completed clearing terrorists out of #Goniri in YOBE state #COINUpdate #VictoryForNigeria #NeverAgain,” the DHQ tweeted. Yobe State is the second state, after Adamawa, the military has successfully flushed out Boko Haram terrorists from its environs. The military had on Friday announced it discovered a bomb-making factory in Yobe state. The Defence spokesperson, Chris Olukolade, said a cordon-and-search operation led to discovery of the factory located in a fertilizer company. He added that the location was used for the production of all kinds of IEDs. Troops had on Thursday liberated Adamawa State from the control of insurgents having recaptured Madagali from Boko Haram. This recent development leaves Borno state as the only state where Boko Haram has presence. The Nigerian military, in collaboration with coalition forces, has recorded a string of successes against Boko Haram over the last one month.http://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/top-news/178574-nigerian-troops-clear-yobe-of-boko-haram-terrorists-dhq.html |
