BusinessRe: N150,000 Withdrawal Limit: Court Can’t Stop Me, Says Sanusi by Rhea: 12:29pm On Jul 13, 2011
Sanusi wants to forcefully reduce inflation by tightly controlling the amount of cash in circulation. Unfortunately he will end up stifling an economy that is struggling to rear its head up against the global economic woes of the west. Imposition of a cash withdrawal limit in a 21st century is simply barbaric and archaic. He wants to implement e-commerce in a country that cannot provide 3 hours of uninterrupted power supply through its grids. It will be interesting to see how the CBN and Ministry of Finance will work together.
CareerRe: Giving Up Banking For London South Bank University by Rhea: 4:32pm On Jul 11, 2011
@Gunpoint
You spoke like an EShootITE. If so, happy survival. grin

The ranking of a university is not meant to matter, but unfortunately it does. Do not be fooled by contrary opinions on this, because I am a first hand witness. While you will be 'humbly applying for a job' during your final weeks, your peers at Imperial College and Cranfield have been poached on campus by the likes of Schlumberger and Exxon. But this should not deter you. London South Bank has more foreigners than Brits. Definitely lots of Asians. So be prepared to graduate with stellar grades to make a difference. As a black man, the chips are against you already. A stellar academic performance will help you surmount that obstacle.

The masters degree today is increasingly becoming a prerequisite for getting a good job unlike in the past when you needed a masters because you were not satiated with the knowledge gained from an undergraduate degree.

Most Nigerians come home because it is easier to get a job in Nigeria, and you stand a chance of being paid better in Nigeria too. So, if you decide to go, be prepared to come back after your studies instead of spending another year cleaning toilets with a masters degree.
PoliticsRe: Heavy Rain Floods Parts Of Lagos by Rhea: 4:16pm On Jul 11, 2011
We as Lagosians are paying the steep price for our individual and collective near-barbaric sanitary attitudes which MUST change if we intend to work out a solution to this mess. We can sit down on our rain soaked chairs and mattresses and curse Fashola and GEJ from now till Ramadan. That will not solve the entire problem. If you have ever thrown any trash on the streets or inside the drain/gutter, be it tom-tom wrapper or sachet water bag, you are part of the cause of the disaster that we all are facing today. If there is a lesson to be learned here, it is this: WATER WILL ALWAYS FIND ITS LEVEL AND ITS WAY. If you block the drains, it will channel itself through our streets and find its way into our bedrooms on its way to the Atlantic. It is that simple. The land level in Lagos is still above the high tide level of the Atlantic ocean, Thus any runoff should ideally find its way into the ocean. It is left for us to clear the path for the runoff by keeping our drains free of debris and disposing our garbage with decency, or allow the runoff to find its way to the ocean (through our streets, bedrooms and roads)
PoliticsRe: Arrested Boko Haram Members Won’t Face Prosecution - Sss by Rhea: 3:18pm On Jul 05, 2011
This development leaves a sour taste in my mouth but does not surprise me. After all, Mr President's nomination to the VP seat was a move made by Obasanjo in order to assuage the feelings of MEND after fighting the FG to submission. Having overseen the granting of amnesty to MEND and other militants, Mr President does not want to be seen as being one-sided in this situation. He wants to be seen as playing the 'what is good for the goose is also good for the gander' agenda. The fact that the FG has taken this stance is a confirmation that there are some sacred cows behind the Boko Haram cause that GEJ and co are afraid of.

This development is exactly what happens when a nation legalizes criminality in the name of amnesty. Now every riffraff in Nigeria can bomb away, loot and kill, kidnap at random and seek amnesty, and still get it. The next thing you know, Boko Haram will send in their list of ministerial and ambassadorial nominees. This is why Nigeria is rightfully branded a lawless nation by other countries. We make laws in order to override them with political solutions. It will be interesting to see what interpretation President Goodluck Jonathan will give to this development on his facebook page.
PoliticsRe: Ministerial Nominee Cant Speak English! by Rhea: 12:49pm On Jul 04, 2011
This thread should give us no excuse to abuse each other's ethnicity as we often do. Nigeria is a multi-ethnic country. It will be a daunting task if all the ministers were to address the public in their respective mother tongues. That is why we have an official language (English). 'Official' does not make it superior. It just makes it official. A minister is a government official. She should know how to communicate with Nigerians (and foreigners too!)

We should not be making any excuses for her, more so since she is about to serve an administration that has made English literature mandatory for all secondary school students.

BusinessRe: Rich Nigerians: Why Are You Not Patronizing Tinapa? by Rhea: 6:09pm On Jul 01, 2011
The problem with Tinapa is the same problem with PHCN, NNPC and Nigeria as a whole. We lack maintenance culture. We can build but cannot run/maintain.

A country like Nigeria endowed with so many natural sites and locations does not need a multimillion naira edifice to establish a tourism industry. We have all the bush, waterfalls, rivers, streams, forests, games and flora that should put us at the forefront of tourism in Africa. But we would rather wish to make a Dubai out of Calabar or a New York out of Lagos.

There is a lot to learn from the tourism industries in Kenya, Malawi, Botswana, Lesotho, Tanzania. Then we need to put things right in Nigeria. Security, Power, rule of law. A description of Nigeria in the tourism map reads like Fallujah or Kabul. It will take more than advert on CNN to lure tourists to Calabar while Kidnappers are running a show barely 100km away in Uyo.
PoliticsRe: Rejection Of Clark’s Nominee Brews Rift With Jonathan by Rhea: 1:30pm On Jul 01, 2011
Edwin Clark was instrumental in the projection of GEJ as a VP candidate. He is the godfather of all the militants in the Niger delta. So he commands enough respect both in the swamps and on land grin

He was the key link between MEND and the Federal Government when MEND was bombing and kidnapping left right and centre. He obviously wields tremendous power (guns, bombs, RPGs, etc etc).

He is to GEJ what Anenih was to OBJ. They are very good with balancing equations and taking care of business and people. If his candidate is rejected, we may see the resurgence of militant activities in the delta.

They should probably create a ministry of anti terrorism and let him nominate a candidate for the office tongue

I’ll redeem my pledge of car gifts to traditional rulers – Orji
On June 30, 2011 · In News

Umuahia – Gov. Theodore Orji of Abia has assured traditional rulers in the state that his administration will fulfill its campaign promise of car gift to them.

Orji gave the assurance when executives of Ngwa Royal Fathers Supreme Councils paid him a courtesy call, yesterday, in Umuahia.

According to the governor, Abia has more than 700 gazetted traditional rulers.

“I will keep to the promise I made to you during the campaigns.

“The promise is on course because the traditional institution must be respected and given a pride of place in this administration,” he said.

He said that the government had donated three air conditioned buses to the council and commended the traditional rulers for their steadfastness and support.

The governor appealed to members of the supreme council to propagate his administration to their members who had been fighting the state government for selfish interest.

The governor reiterated his commitment to hand over power to Abia South in 2015, as power rotation started from Abia North and had gone to Abia Central.

Earlier, HRM Gaius Ihejimaizu, the leader of the supreme council, said they were in Umuahia to congratulate the governor on his victory at the poll and to pledge their support for his government.(NAN)
PoliticsRe: Buhari: Thieving Elite As Bad As Militants Such As Mend, Boko Haram Etc by Rhea: 4:52pm On Jun 30, 2011
@Odumchi: You seem to be forgetting one major legacy that MEND left behind for Nigerians - they commercialized bombing and kidnapping in Nigeria as a means of pursuing their cause. Before MEND, kidnapping for ransom was something you hear about happening in Colombia and Mexico. In addition, let us not forget that there were also human casualties of the activities of MEND. Families lost bread winners as a result of their activities. Violence as a means of achieving an objective is always a controversial issue especially when civilian lives are involved.

BusinessRe: Putting Sanusi's Islamic Banking In Perspective by Rhea: 2:03pm On Jun 30, 2011
And who says licences cannot be granted as well as evoked? Who says that CEOs cannot be thrown in jail and hounded by the EFCC? Nothing is irrevocable in life. Razing people and things to the ground in Nigeria has never been a challenge. Establishing and maintaining however is. The Islamic bank can always be sent to the grave like other banks before it, if the next CBN governor can establish a link between terrorism and the bank, and that would not be such a difficult thing to do if the governor will not be too preoccupied with looting the treasury
TravelRe: Assumed Legalized Bribery By The Nigerian Immigration At Mm Airport by Rhea: 1:43pm On Jun 30, 2011
Mbeki:
As far as am concern, those that give bribes are either dumb, in possession of fake documents or has some contraband items on them.

In absence of all of these, it is your fundamental human rights to move to anywhere you want to go within your country or to travel as you wish (Article 13 in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights).

What first time travelers need to do is to arrive at the airport on time to have enough time before boarding, remain calm, cool and collected. when they tried to extort money from you. If they insist, demand that you know the reasons you are being delayed and what relevant sections of Nigeria Immigration laws backs that. If they make you miss your flight, press charges against them through a lawyer.

The first time i traveled, my passport was not even stamped, as am to collect the visa at the port of entry in the country am travelling. When the Immigration guys took me away from the queue, i remained unshaken! when they're tired of holding the passport, they gave it back to me.

The secret is, know your rights, stand on it, and don't display any attitude of urgency to travel out of the country, cos if they see how desperate you are, they'll use that to get something from you.

These ways, you'll checkmate them.
smiley Well said. Most of us do not know our rights nor do we know how to address these men in uniform. You cannot do gragra with someone who soaks gragra like garri and groundnut. A clear conscience fears no accusation.

PoliticsRe: Diezani Allison Madueke Skipped Nysc by Rhea: 7:02pm On Jun 27, 2011
Decree 51 that establishes NYSC is very clear and unambiguous. As long as Diezani Allison-Madueke graduated before the age of 30, she must serve. It does not matter if she attended Unilag or Unipetrol. If she assumed public office in Nigeria before doing so, then she would have violated that law. Simple!

The criteria for her exemption from NYSC are also crystal clear:

1. If she was over 30 when she graduated, or

2. If she had served in the armed forces of the Federation or the Nigeria Police Force for a period of more than nine months, or

3. If she was a member of staff of any of the following:

(i) the Nigerian Security Organisation, or
(ii) the State Security Service, or
(iii) the National Intelligence Agency, or
(iv) the Defense Intelligence Service; or

4. If she had been conferred with any National Honour

For as along as she met none of these criteria, then she would have violated the law establishing the NYSC.

While I would also agree that she may not be the first or the only one to have 'dodged' NYSC and still gotten a job in Nigeria, we all have to realise that when you go fishing, you don't catch all the fishes that snag your line. She may be (yet) the fish to be caught. If the senate approved her appointment as a minister without asking to see her NYSC discharge or exemption certificate, then our senators must have made a meal of a very simple assignment.

Pictures like this gladden my heart grin. This is justice and deservedly so in a country where the police and the courts have failed us and continue to fail us. If these people were apprehended by the police, they would have been released before this weekend. Thank you very much for such a brave act of photojournalism. Let the wise see and learn. I also commend the public executors. More of this from time to time and very soon, we will decrease the population of these criminal elements in Abuja.

And for those that would support them because times are hard, if every Nigerian suffering from hardship were to turn to armed robbery, kidnapping and 'one-chance', Somalia would have nothing on us for lawlessness.

CrimeRe: Supreme Court Okays Death For 2 Robbers by Rhea: 4:03pm On Jun 21, 2011
These robbers deserve to die like mosquitoes. They embarked on robbery operations on their own free will and ended up killing people (people not mosquitoes). They deserve to die to serve as deterrent to those that continue to embark on criminal activities because times are hard. This country is overpopulated with robbers so much so that we need to curb their population.

I till my land and slave honestly everyday to earn a decent meal, grow my crops and sell to earn a living. I brave the elements of weather while doing that. And when I earn my proceeds, some riffraff will stick a gun at my face and ask for my hard earned money because times are hard. I also pay my taxes to a government that does not build roads for me to transport my produce to the market. Rather, my tax is used to buy meals for some robber that earned a life sentence because he got caught stealing and ended up in jail. He went stealing because times are hard. Hard for him and soft for me, abi??

EVERY ROBBER SHOULD BE BURNT ALIVE TILL THEIR TONGUE STICK OUT.

But the fact remains that the police were not even looking for the kidnap victims. They were 'looking' for the mother of an oil-magnate who had been kidnapped two days earlier. Obviously the man had 'mobilized' the police to go after the kidnappers.

OWERRI – Four robbers were, yesterday, burnt at Amakohia, near Owerri, while attempting to rob staff of Mary Sumner Primary School of their valuables.

Vanguard investigations revealed that the gang of about six robbers stormed the primary school, owned by the Anglican Diocese of Owerri, at about 9am.

A witness, who simply identified himself as Nkechi, said: “Six hefty boys stormed the school premises on four motorcycles and started terrorising the teachers who were mainly women.

“An alarm was raised and people rushed into the school premises. On seeing the advancing crowd, the robbers made spirited attempt to escape.”

Nkechi said the people on rescue mission gave the robbers a hot chase and nabbed four of them, while two escaped. She added that they were beaten mercilessly and then set on fire.

One of the dead hoodlums was identified simply as Chinedu and the robbers were all said to be natives of Orji, Owerri North Local Government Area of the state.

Do unto others…

An interesting aspect of the macabre show was introduced when relations of the dead gangsters were heard insisting that since their relations had been killed, the runaway members of the gang must be fished out and punished as well.

Some of the people interviewed recalled that the bandits had been terrorising the area before they met their waterloo.

All efforts made to get in touch with the Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Mr. Linus Nwaiwu, a Deputy Superintendent of Police, DSP, at press time failed proved futile.

Arik aircraft in near mishap
On June 20, 2011 · In News

By Tony Edike & Daniel Eteghe

ENUGU – WHAT would have been a tragic air disaster was averted, Monday, when an Arik aircraft scheduled to fly Enugu to Abuja by 8.50am almost crashed four minutes after take-off from Akanu Ibiam Airport, Enugu.

The over 100 passengers on board would have perished if the pilot had not turned round and made an emergency landing.

Captain of the Boeing 737-800 aircraft with registration number F-MJK, whose name could not be ascertained, was quoted to have said he turned back to the airport when he noticed that the right engine had failed.

Meanwhile, speaking to aviation correspondents in Lagos on the incident, Dr. Harold Demuren, Director-General of Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority, NCAA, said the air return was necessitated by the indicator in the cockpit, adding that it was the best option the pilot took to avoid a fatal accident.

He said: “The pilot took a precautionary measure to ensure safety of the passengers.”

Spokesman of Arik Air, Mr. Ola Banji, said: “What happened was that the captain noticed an indication light on and had to make an air return as a precautionary measure.

“At no time was the lives of the passengers put in danger.”

However, NCAA has already grounded the aircraft until it is certified to fly again.

It is quite pathetic how some people start ranking criminal activities as a means of justifying evil.
A thief is a thief. Whether it is 100 naira or 10 billion naira, the fact remains that the same act has been committed - THEFT.
Comparing kidnapping with corruption will never justify any of them. They are both criminal activities and their perpetrators should be made to face the law.

Those in support of Bankole should do well to explain to us why he is a victim here and not a criminal. Facts always speak louder than sentiments.

I strongly believe that the police has their dirty hands in the negotiation, payment of ransom and release of these corpers. I do not understand how one suspect was arrested and the rest fled.
Besides, vanguard (http://www.vanguardngr.com/2011/06/kidnapped-corps-members-regain-freedom-in-rivers/) reported that the victims were rescued during a top and search. The only source to believe would be the victims themselves.
