The only thing I can remember about my present job is the amount I spent on transportation for the interview. I spent ₦72,000.00 for road and air trip from Warri to PH to ABJ for the interview and back to Warri. This was in November 2013
I was like God if I don't get this job, it won't be fair and I won't go for any long distance interview again. My GF then now wife even gave me 10k to add to my transportation money.
Anyways I got the job all thanks to God and resumed December 2013. |

Jobs/Vacancies › Re: An Urgent Decision On A Job Offer by ritux: 8:33am On Jul 30, 2015*. Modified: 9:33am On Jul 30, 2015 |
Anonymous1900: Hello Everyone
Let me start by saying this is not an opportunity to judge or criticize my decisions or lack of it there of. I would also try to be as open and forthcoming as possible regarding all information to help you offer any opinions either from personal experience of inferred ideas.
I already have a direction am inclined to lean towards but its not set in stone and am very much open to ideas from others (I actually welcome it as i like to be thorough and get all the information i can have before making decisions)
I was recently offered a position in Nigeria due to start in a month at the latest however i am currently rounding off a research program in the united states (6 months to finish). The prospective employer will not defer the position till i finish in 6 months time. I had interviews with the vice president of the company when i was in Nigeria last year and a couple of other interviews but i guess due to the instability of the economy (elections and all), the offer never materialized till now. i consider the offer a place to start and while I cant be specific about the exact figure here, its upwards of 250k/month after Tax.
Before you make your decisions based on the offer or my current academic situation, here is a little about me. I have a BSc (Nigeria), MSc (Uk) and MEng (USA).... All in engineering (so i wont consider the figure impressive however its not an entry position and that is my basic pay so there are other benefits). i have paid work experience in the Uk and US and took up an unpaid work experience in an Oil & gas servicing company in Nigeria for about 6 months. needless to say i am well educated but without enough experience in my chosen field and this offer hopes to fill that void.
if you also want to ask why am i not eager to come back to Nigeria? the economy seems fairly unstable now, Iran deal is sure to devastate the oil sector further and destabilize the Nigerian economy even more for those that understand the vicissitudes of the Iran deal. I do have access to getting residency papers in the USA which will coincide with the time i finish my research or a few months after without doing anything shady or sinister (most of my family are here anyway). I am also fully aware that with or without papers, jobs are not automatic any where but you will agree with me that its a little easier abroad than in Nigeria. a good example is the current offer i am considering where i still needed an introduction to setup the interviews and even though i did all the grunt work, i wont have even gotten in the door without knowing someone. The company as a matter of policy does not even advertise positions.
A little about the company: international company with huge investment portfolio in the millions of dollars, where its based should not be important but its on the island. cant reveal more than that about the company.
please let me know what you think or what you would do in my shoes. Also i would be happy to answer any questions that help you offer better advise provided its something i can reveal
Thanks in advance My advice, please stay back. Even if you add 100k as other added allowances to the 250k salary, it is not worth it with your qualifications. A fresh graduate from the Uni without MSc that is lucky to get employment with any of the big IOCs and Oil servicing firms earn above 300k a month. You have a good future ahead with your academic qualifications and few working experience. With what you have (academic qualification and few working experience) you should not accept anything less than 500k a month. Let me say if I were in your shoes, I will not accept less than 500k a month in Nigeria. I will use myself as example, I have just my BEng from Nigerian University and MSc in the UK. Before the end of my MSc, I was already getting invitations for interview not even aptitude test in the UK and Nigeria but I could not attend the ones in Nigeria because of my MSc studies. As at when I completed my MSc in August 2012, I had virtually or maybe 1.5 years of professional working experience in my field gathered from 6 months industrial training and some few casual job. Then I started applying for jobs and I was getting invitations for interviews. The only test I wrote was that of Shell, Total, Halliburton and 2 others. All you need to do is search for jobs, I sent at least 5 CVs including unsolicited ones daily when I was seriously job hunting. Even now that I am working, I still get invitations for some jobs I apply for. Patience is a virtue. Modified: When I look at some job portals like rigzone and others, I see a lot of job vacancies requiring 1-4 years of experience being advertised in US and other European countries including the Middle East. You can apply for them. If not for the fact that I don't have working permits in most of these countries, I strongly believe I would have gotten a job outside the shores of Nigeria. Even at that, I still apply because some companies do sponsor. |

I met this black american guy somewhere and as we were conversing in English lingo, we both had some glitches in communication. For me, he was too fast. Our last 3 presidents, Yar Adua, GEJ and now GMB are all bad when it comes to speaking with confidence and also they have bad accents. |

Symphony007: I thank you for your calm and sensible response, it's something lacking on this forum. We may disagree greatly on this issue and I do not begrudge you for that. I am heterosexual but I will always stand for the rights of gays as I belive they have a fight to their lives so far as it does not affect the next person negatively, for years, humans have tried to set standard on what is right or not, in the 60's, it was inter racial marriage and just like this there was a lot of reasons against it, where is it today? ...we as nigerians have a lot of problems but our leaders are pointing to that shinny thing in the corner called gay rights and we are playing along while they rob us dry, forgetting that there has not been a single protest or Nigerian in this territory advocating for rights whatsoever, they are busy doing whatever they do in their private bedrooms, so why channel so much energy and hate on a non issue? Is according to Uhuru kenyatta, gay rights is a non issue, why does it warrant discussion in federal parliaments across africa puting our various problems in the back seat. As a continent, we can channel our energies in what people do in the privacy of their rooms that is going on somewhere even as we speak and can't stop or we can move to better things that ensure be bequeathed a better africa to our kids than we currently have. Thanks! Thanks mate for enlightening me with some history. I apologise for saying shame to you. I should have respected your opinion on the subject. Like you said, it should be the prerogative of individual to follow what they believe. |

1stCitizen: O' Wailing wailer! Please tell me which is a good accent.......Australian, American or Scottish..... We all know they have different accents and intonations......The Scottish are quite difficult to understand but their fellow English country men never make reference to that.
But not you wailing wailer of African origin who incidentally is being ridiculed by others because of your heavy accents..... now feeling superior to your own
Have you ever heard of Malcolm X's description of a "House Nigger"..... Look in the mirror and ye shall find one If u like, call me whatever u want, I don't give a damn shit. For your information, I schooled in Scotland and to be precise, Edinburgh. Interacting with different people of from different nationalities improved my speaking. If you meet me for the first time, and I start forming, u will think I am a black American or a Brit. Now back to the issue, the respected world leaders, when you see them speak on TV or address people, they speak with confidence and strong aura. Not even our ex-president with his doctorate can speak like that. You have your own opinion and I respect your opinion. I also have mine which I have aired. See let me tell you, no matter how good you are, if you can't speak with confidence, nobody will take you serious. Cheers! |

Symphony007: NO! God bless obama for being true to his conviction, he should have even gone further to ask Africans why the punishment for gays is stiffer than corruption and which has been more detrimental to africa.
You are entitled to your own opinion and not your own facts. Those are the facts, you don't believe it, counter with better. I agree with you on the punishment to corruption being nothing compared to gay. Those are part of the problems we have here in Africa and our dear Nigeria. We treat corruption with levity. That's why u see a thief of onion sentenced to 15yrs or more but the corrupt public holders sentenced to 6months imprisonment with the option of fine. I expect Obama to talk to us about issues like this and not asking us to support gay. Case study: while the Americans have punished those involved in the Halliburton scandal, Nigeria is yet to charge it's own citizens involved to court. As per your facts, I don't know about it but I know for sure that Nigerians prefer to watch pornography that involves people of opposite sex than watching some crazy lesbians or gay. Even you, I know u will prefer to watch a man and woman sex tape than watch a man&man or woman & woman sex tape. |

[s] Symphony007: I applaud pres. Obama for standing by his conviction and bringing up this issue despite him knowing it is very toxic and divisive in Africa.
Kenyan's can keep basking in their hypocrisy!! We hate gays but we are among s the highest consumers of gay porn in the world. [/s] Shame on Obama. He knows Africa's position on this issue and shouldn't have raised it. There are other problems that are more pressing to us than issue of Gay. Shame on you too for saying "we are among the highest consumers of gay porn in the world". Where did you get that fact from? You better grow up son and wise up. SMD for u. |

Obj, Yar Adua, GEJ and now GMB...none of them can speak like this man with strong courage and charisma. This are the kind of leaders we need in Africa. To match the Western leaders in all aspect.
I wish we can get this kind of President in Nigeria. I wish GMB can take some positives from this speech but unfortunately, he can't because his accent and intonation is bad.
Looking forward to the day we will get some eloquent, intelligent person as president of Nigeria. |

I don't have a problem if Buhari travels anywhere with his son. There is no big deal in it.
However, Femi should not use the fact that because Clinton or Obama travels with their kids, Buhari can do same. In other words, he is virtually trying to use US as a template for Nigeria.
Okay Femi, since US supports Gay, let Nigeria and GMB support Gay and Lesbianism too.
