One of Nigeria’s oldest financial institutions, Union Bank, on Friday night admitted ownership of a large consignment of cash which anti-graft operatives said they intercepted at the international airport in Enugu, a report by Premium Times has revealed. Recall that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission had yesterday announced in a statement that two men were arrested at Akanu Ibiam International Airport with a combined cash of $2.8 million (over N1 billion at N360 a dollar). The agency said the suspects mentioned their affiliation to Union Bank and Bankers Warehouse, a cash-in-transit contractor. The anti-graft office said it was investigating the recovery as money laundering. But Union Bank strongly denied wrongdoing, saying the practice was standard in the banking industry and its contractors were licenced by the Central Bank of Nigeria. In a string of tweets directed at the EFCC on Friday night, Union Bank criticised the anti-graft office for being too hasty at disclosing the development to the public, “prior to the completion” of investigation. PREMIUM TIMES learnt on Saturday from Tony Orilade, a spokesperson for the EFCC, that the money was intercepted at about 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, and it came barely a few weeks after operatives recovered about N940 million from a Lebanese and another $370,000 at Lagos Airport. Mr Orilade said the EFCC made concerted efforts to get Union Bank to corroborate accounts of the suspects, but was frustrated for nearly 24 hours. “We made serious efforts to get Union Bank officials in Enugu and other parts of the country to confirm details of the money, but there was no one ready to cooperate with us,” Mr Orilade said. “We then decided to count the money before the suspects and took it to the CBN in Enugu where it was deposited and records taken.” Mr Orilade said as of 4:00 p.m. Friday, Union Bank representatives had not come around to claim the money or ask about their staff members arrested. “It was after we released a statement to the media that they started calling and making noise,” the spokesperson said. It was not immediately learnt whether Union Bank or Bankers Warehouse has reached out to the anti-graft office to sort out the matter. Mr Orilade said the agency was unconvinced by Union Bank merely claiming ownership of the money on Twitter. “Investigation is ongoing, which might prompt prosecution or no prosecution,” the EFCC chief said. “But we would like to let Nigerians know that when we see anything close to infringement of the law, we do not leave anything to chances.”

There's an outrage online after a young black wrestler was forced to cut his dreadlocks before competing in a match in an incident that has raised questions about whether race was involved in the controversial decision. According to SNJ Today, Buena High School wrestler Andrew Johnson , who is black, was told by a white referee that he would have to cut off his dreadlocks or forfeit his Wednesday's match with his opponent from Oakcrest High School. The publication reported that Johnson and his coaches initially protested the decision before the wrestler ultimately agreed to the quick haircut in a video posted by SNJ which has gone viral. According to the report, Johnson had intended to cover his dreadlocks with a hair cap, as is permitted by national and state rules, but was not allowed to do so. The referee has been identified as the same person who in 2016 offered to go through sensitivity training and an alcohol awareness program after he reportedly used the N-word toward another official, according to the Cherry Hill (N.J.) Courier-Post. In a statement released by Larry White, the executive director of the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association, he said the association will recommend that the "referee in question not be assigned to any event until this matter has been reviewed more thoroughly in order to avoid potential distractions for the competing wrestlers." The Academic Staff Union of Universities, Lagos State University chapter, has demanded the payment of accumulated Earned Academic Allowance unpaid since 2009 to lecturers in the institution. The union’s demand is captured in its bulletin obtained by the News Agency of Nigeria on Tuesday in Lagos. The demands, signed by signed by its Secretary, Dr Tony Dansu and the Assistant Secretary, Dr Adeolu Oyekan, indicated that the EAA was a product of the ASUU/Federal Government Agreement of 2009, which redefined the minimum benchmark for university administration in Nigeria. ASUU-LASU said that the Lagos State Government and LASU’s administration had since breached the agreement, as it remains the only university yet to pay any fraction of the allowance throughout the country. “The EAA, it should be noted, was part of the negotiated emolument of academic staff whose payment was deferred by the university when it started to implement the new salary structure. “No one in his wildest of imagination expects the university to accumulate the allowances spanning a period of almost a decade,” it said. According to the union, ASUU-LASU under different leadership made a case for the payment of the allowances so that the university avoids an accumulation that may in the future prove burdensome. It said these plans were ignored by successive administrations and as at January 2016 when the current Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Olanrewaju Fagbohun assumed office, the arrears had already spanned to about 6 years. The union said it had raised the issue with the current vice-chancellor and forwarded components of the allowances to him when he suggested that the university had no understanding of them. “This has since followed numerous reminders but the vice-chancellor has not for once responded and it is on this basis that the union executives decided in line with congress directive to take the case to public domain,” it said. The union noted that the ongoing renegotiation between ASUU and the Federal Government had to do with the need to improve the conditions agreed to in 2009 which was long overdue for review. According to ASUU-LASU, the ongoing renegotiation has nothing to do with the implementation of the subsisting agreement as claimed by the vice-chancellor in one of his bulletins. The union said the disregard that the university administration had exhibited toward its own academic staff was the reason why it remained the only university yet to pay any fraction of the allowance. ASUU-LASU, however, reassured the staff of its readiness to meet, dialogue and explore reasonable pathways geared toward ensuring payment of the long overdue allowance. Reacting, the university’s spokesman, Mr Ademola Adekoya, told NAN that the issues of the unpaid EAA predates the tenure of the current vice-chancellor. “The unpaid Earned Academic Allowances predated the assumption of Fagbohun to office and has been lingering since 2009 when the Federal Government agreed with ASUU that the allowances will be paid. “Since then, nothing was paid, before the vice-chancellor was appointed in 2016, and when he came on board, he met a lot of unpaid salary arrears, denied promotions and that became his priority. “He cannot just come and begin to pay earned academic allowances and leave promotion and salary arrears unpaid,” he said. Adekoya challenged ASUU-LASU to name Nigerian universities that had paid the EAA to a reasonable amount, as many of them were even struggling to pay salaries as when due. “How many universities have been paying the EAA in Nigeria? Most of them are struggling to pay salaries. “The demands of workers in other universities is for their salaries to be paid as when due, as workers in some universities are even collecting half salaries so they are not talking about earned academic allowances for now,” he said. A 12-year-old boy has left his family members in a state of pain after reportedly killing 6-year-old sister. Reports say that the couple were attending a Christmas party when the incident occurred. Fox 2 Now reported that Maliyah Palmer was shot in the head and died at a nearby hospital on Friday. The two were reportedly being watched by a 16-year-old brother. Florissant police responded to the shooting at 11 p.m. The 12-year-old reportedly found the 9mm pistol inside a dresser in his parent’s bedroom and fired the gun. Three weeks after Abiodun Olabisi, a 23-year-old final year student of Ladoke Akintola University, Ogbomosho, was arrested over the alleged murder of her lover, Adegun Lekan, investigation has revealed the motivation behind her action. According to the Oyo State Commissioner of Police, Abiodun Odude, the suspect and the deceased, a fresh graduate of the institution awaiting call-up for NYSC, were said to be living together as a ‘couple’ at Phonix Area, Stadium Road, Ogbomosho until the unfortunate incident. The Oyo State police command, yesterday, paraded her for allegedly stabbing her boyfriend to death. . He explained that the four vehicles involved in the accident were a Mack tanker with registration number, APP-49 XS, a BMW saloon with registration number EPE-864 CN, a Mitsubishi Canter bus with registration number KRD-935 XD, and a Toyota Carina with registration number GGE-883 AT. Babatunde said that the tanker was trying to avoid a vehicle that drove against the traffic when it rammed into three other vehicles thereby resulting in the death of two persons while six other sustained injuries out of the nine people involved in the accident. “The corpses of the two victims have deposited at the mortuary at General Hospital, Lagos, while the injured were also taken to the intensive unit of the same hospital,” he said. He, however, advised motorists to desist from driving against traffic to avoid accident. A man identified as Wagbara David who owns a mortuary in Rumuosi by East West road in Port-Harcourt, Rivers state capital, has been killed. The deceased was reportedly stabbed to death by a tanker conductor who parked in front of his office in Rumuosi area. Report has it that his offence was that he asked the driver to take his tanker from the front of his office and the conductor pulled out his dagger and stabbed him to death. He was rushed to the University of Port-Harcourt Teaching Hospital (UPTH) where he was confirmed dead.
