Nigeria’s oldest prisoner, Pa Celestine Egbunuche, clocked 100 last Saturday, August 4, within the confines of Enugu Maximum Prison. The centenarian, who hails from Akokwa in Ideato North Local Government Area of Imo State, was condemned to death along with his son, Paul and another relation, now 87. They were said to have been engaged in a fight over a piece of land and in the process, somebody died. With such fate, Pa Egbunuche has for over 17 years lived in desolation and hopelessness. But all hope is not lost as a non-governmental organisation, Global Society for Anti-corruption (GSAC) is pushing for his release. GSAC has appealed to the Federal Government and Governor Rochas Okorocha to use their board of mercy and release Egbunuche, his 78 years old relation and son from prison. Zonal Resource Executive of GSAC, Amaka Nweke, commended Chief Judge of Enugu State, Justice Priscilla Emehelu, for her recent prison visit where many inmates were granted freedom pleaded with her to look into the case of Pa Egbunuche whom she said their investigation showed might be Africa’s oldest inmate. According to the NGO, Egbunuche has suffered from diabetes over the years, adding that with his age and failing health, it will be proper to release him to go and possibly die peacefully at home. If eventually released, the organisation would also want the Federal and State Governments to take care of Pa Egbunuche’s rehabilitation. Experts said that in other jurisdictions, inmates above 65 years are eligible for either parole or state pardon. Seiyefa is to act as the Director General of the Department of State Security. This followed the sack of Lawal Daura by acting President Yemi Osinbajo following the siege on the National Assembly laid by security agents on Tuesday. The new appointment was confirmed by the president in its Twitter handle @NGRPresident on Tuesday. It affirmed that “Matthew B. Seiyefa, the most senior Director in the Department of State Services (DSS), will act as Director-General until further notice.” Osinbajo had earlier directed that the sacked Daura should handover to the most senior DSS personnel. Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has said that no amount of intimidation and threat would force him to abandon his call for the sack of the Buhari -led administration. The former president said this when he received a 30-man delegation of Bafarawa Presidential Campaign Organisation (BCO) led by the former governor of Sokoto State, Attahiru Bafarawa, at his Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library (OOPL) residence, Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital today August 5th. Obasanjo said there’s nothing that can be as worst as his experience while in jail, saying he was imprisoned for doing nothing. He said the prison experience was a sacrifice for better Nigeria and that he would be ready to make more sacrifices for the country. According to the former president, no right-thinking Nigerian will applaud the current situation in the country. “The situation of Nigeria today is not the one any right thinking Nigerian should applaud. And my own strong belief is that Nigeria deserves better than we have now. And we can get better than what we have.And so, yours is to see what you can do, that is why you are aspiring to make Nigeria better than what it is today. Nobody who loves Nigeria will not want it to better than its is today. I, definitely, have made personal sacrifices and I will make again. Talk of fighting in the war front and shedding of blood, or event talk of going to prison, because I believe in democracy. I went to prison for doing nothing wrong. I have also been intimidated and threatened, what would you do to intimidate somebody like me? Whatever you are trying to do to me, people have tried to them to me in the past, and it amounted to nothing and it will amount to nothing. Because before I act, I pray to God to guide me and I think of Nigeria first, particularly majority of Nigerians who are underprivileged, whose situation we need to improve upon. “How would I say that anyone who wants to improve the situation of Nigeria, I will not support? How would I say that anybody who does not feel satisfied with the situation of Nigeria should not be encouraged? How would I say that anyone who believes strongly that Nigeria can be better than what it is and believes that it is a collective responsibility, I will not support? But there must be a leader that will lead the team and leadership is not easy. If we do not act together as we should act together, Nigeria will not be what it should be come 2019. “Aspiration? A Plateau community has been plunged into chaos after some Fulani herdsmen reportedly attacked it, killing three people. According to a reports no less than three persons were shot dead on Friday night in Zanwra area of Jebbu Miango, Bassa Local Government Area of Plateau State by suspected Fulani herdsmen, throwing the whole community into a fresh apprehension.  The killing took place barely three days after the peace and security conference organised by the Plateau State Peace Building Agency in collaboration with the United States Institute for Peace, Justice, and Security and financed by US Embassy in Nigeria. The conference had as its theme: “The resurgence of violence in Plateau State: Towards a multi-stakeholder partnership for peace and security.” While one expended shell of 7.62mm ammunition was recovered at the scene of the incident, the victims were said to have been buried by their relations according to the tradition of Irigwe ethnic group. The attackers were said to have struck at 8pm, a few hours after the visit of the new Commander of Special Military Taskforce codenamed ‘Operation Safe Haven’, Maj. Gen. Augustine Agundu to the area. The spokesperson for the Plateau State Police Command, Matthias Tyopev, a Deputy Superintendent of Police, confirmed the killing on Saturday, saying investigation had commenced. He said, “Today, being Saturday, August 4 at 0745hrs, the Nigeria Police Force, Plateau State Command, Jos received an information that on August 3 at about 1830hrs, unknown armed men suspected to be Fulani herdsmen attacked Zanwra area of Jebbu Miango, Bassa LGA. As a result of the attack three persons were shot dead. “They are; Emmanuel Gado ‘M’ aged 22, Ladi Monday ‘F’ age 30 and Mary Monday ‘F’ aged 5 years. Police detectives led by the Divisional Crime Officer of Bassa Police Division mobilised to the scene of crime. One expended shell of 7.62mm ammunition was recovered, Photographs of the corpses were also taken. “Meanwhile, the corpses were buried by relations according to Irigwe rites. An investigation is in progress to track and arrest the perpetrators to face justice. A first-year student at Mudavadi Girls High School Madzuu in Vihiga County, Kenya is being investigated by the police after she allegedly aborted a foetus and dumped it in the school’s toilet. Vihiga police officer, Justin Nyaga, said a teacher reported to them that one of their students had dumped a foetus at the latrines, on Wednesday evening, reports Standard Media Kenya. “We immediately went to the school and true to it, there was a foetus dumped. In our initial investigations, we found one student who is in Form One, she admitted that she had dumped the foetus because she was afraid of being seen with an infant in school,” Nyaga said. The police boss said they have taken the 15-year-old kid to the hospital for treatment against infections. “It is one of the cases we have never encountered in this region. We are urging students to refrain from such because it can result in among other things, death,” he said. He noted so far, they have not been able to get the full information from the student regarding how the abortion was carried out and if there were others involved in it. A woman who was bitten by a snake, has caused quite a scene after she walked inside a hospital holding the same reptile. A young woman who was bitten by a snake has impressed the public in China after catching the reptile with her bare hands before taking it with her to the hospital.  She held the slithering animal around her wrist and calmly went to the ER so the medics could identify it, according to a hospital in eastern China's Zhejiang Province. Huang Shengqiang, the ER doctor who treated the woman, said the snake was a non-venomous red-banded snake. Dr Huang said there was no swelling around the patient's wound, so he gave her simple treatment.  Viral pictures taken by the medics show the patient filling out a registration form while grabbing the snake with her thumb and fingers. '(She) is a femme fatale,' gushed ER nurse Ma Nina at Jinhua's Pujiang Hospital as she recalled the incident which occurred during the wee hours on Sunday. The hospital said in a statement that the patient is around 20 years old. She told the doctor that she was searching for her dropped phone in the shrubs while being bitten by the snake, which then crawled onto her palm. The woman then caught the snake.  Pujiang Hospital said its doctors had treated many patients suffering from snake bites this summer, but this was the first time that they had seen someone coming into the ER with a live snake. Speaking to Pear video, the woman, identified by her surname Chen, said she was not afraid of snakes; on the contrary, she found snakes 'cute'.  Ms Chen said her father and grandfather taught her how to catch snakes when she was little, and she often followed them into the mountains to hunt for them. The hospital has advised the public not to go to the wild or near shrubs at early morning or evening in summer to avoid being bitten by snakes. Two female nominated members of a Kenyan county assembly exchanged blows at the cafeteria on Tuesday, over a disagreement allegedly involving a man. SDE reports that the two ladies have been romantically linked to the same man and got to know about it, leading to the quarrel between them. One of their colleagues told SDE, that tempers flared when one of the ladies who is said to be the daughter of a former MP stormed the cafeteria to beat her nominated colleague- who was shouting “ Huyu ni wazimu (This one is crazy! She needs help! Please help her seek help). The two were separated but not before exchanging slaps and kicks. Other members of the county assembly, who were having lunch dashed out of the cafeteria shouting for help from the assembly security officials. Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Chief Femi Adesina, has said that despite the difficult situation Nigerians are faced with, peace will return to the country. Adesina also said that enemies of the country that have made it impossible for peace to reign in different parts of the country, will at the long run be disgraced. Speaking when he received members of Junior Chamber International (JCI), Ikoyi, and Orji Kalu Foundation, who came to the Presidential Villa, Abuja, Tuesday, as part of a Peace Rally, Adesina stated: “For those working against peace in our country, I have news for them. They will never win.” According to him, “Those who rupture the peace in different parts of the country will not have the last laugh. The Presidential spokesman in a statement by the Deputy Director, State House Media Department, Abiodun Oladunjoye, Adesina said, “Nigeria will have peace, and if the evildoers don’t settle for peace, that peace will be attained without them. Whether they like it or not, peace will return to Nigeria, despite the difficult times we are passing through now.” He commended the peace marchers for their initiative, noting that the quest for peace was very dear to the heart of the President, “and no matter what the people say, we will get to that peaceful shore in this country. “Diversity should be a source of strength, rather than a centrifugal force.” He said ethnicity, religion, language, and political differences should not lead to animosities and shedding of innocent blood. Demian Igbokwe read a speech on behalf of Orji Kalu, former governor of Abia State and chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, who was one of the brains behind the Peace Walk. Under the title ‘Peace is Possible in Nigeria,’ Kalu lamented that the country had over the years been in the grips of ethno-religious crises, agitations, hatred, distress, insecurity, disunity, violence, hardship and general failure. He said, “Peace is not just a word, it is an act. It is not enough to talk about peace, one must believe in it. And it is not enough to believe in it, one must act on it.” He contended that if peace would be possible in Nigeria, adding that, Nigerians must see themselves as brothers and sisters. He further added that there must be massive enlightenment on the values of peaceful co-existence and that everyone must be involved in security. The house in which Professor Wole Soyinka lived on the campus of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife, has been commissioned as a museum in with Ogun State. The authority of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife, Monday honoured the Nobel Lauraete, Prof Wole Soyinka, with a museum named after him, according to Vanguard. A storey building located in the heart of the university was the official residence of the playright as a lecturer in University of Ife, now Obafemi Awolowo University. The inauguration of the museum was part of the activities tagged “Ife festival of food and identity” by the Institute of Cultural Study of the university. The festival attended by traditional rulers across the Yorubaland and head of some foreign missions, saw Prof. Soyinka performing symbolic cutting of yam to signal the commencement of the weeklong festival. In his address at the occasion, the Ogun state, Senator Ibikunle Amosun expressed the state gratitude to the university for the honor done to Prof. Soyinka, whom he described as the proud son of Ogun state. Senator Amosun, represented by Mrs. Salamat Badru, said: “anything and everything Wole Soyinka simply excite us. Although Wole Soyinka goes beyond our state and indeed beyond the shores of Nigeria, nonetheless, we are pleased that he is one of those Nigerian figures that have helped to place our nation on the world map and, for the good reasons.” “As for the Wole Soyinka museum, our association will go beyond today’s event. Popular Yoruba actress, Iyabo Ojo, is a woman of many parts and she means different things to different people. Many may see her as that haughty actress that is unapproachable or a no-nonsense type but to actress and producer, Vivian Metchie, the mother of two and CEO of Fespris Beauty World, is an angel in time of need. In an emotional post on her Instagram, Vivian revealed she was bedridden for most part of 2014 as a result of an undisclosed illness. She said she asked many of her “so called” Nollywood friends for help but none came to her aid except the sprightly Iyabo Ojo. With a picture of Iyabo Ojo, tagging her as her Woman Crush Wednesday (WCW) she wrote, “I know a few people will be shocked at seeing this. Even me, I can’t believe it. But I took a Raincheck of my life between 2014 till today. Not many of you knew that I was sick and bedridden for a good part of 2014. I reached out to a few of my so-called friends for help. None came through. @iyaboojofespris saw me and saw a need. I didn’t have to ask her. She came through, she called on her friends that all chipped in the little they had. Many of you might have different impressions of her. Even she and I have had our differences. But for those who have ever met her at one point or the other, you will agree that she has lion heart and a kind soul. IY, like I used to call you, you are good people…… Thank you for that year…… Keep being who you are girl.” In 2014 Vivian’s eleven-year old marriage crashed, living her with four kids to care for. In about the same year Vivian converted from Christianity to Islam, saying, Christianity was too confusing for her. Local pastors on Friday refused to officiate at the burials of an 82-year-old kidnapper, Wangari Muturi Karanja and her nephew, Sammy Mwangi Kang’ethe, 26, in Irewa village, Kiharu, Muranga County in Kenya. Karanja, Kang’ethe and another man from Njumbi village in Mathioya constituency had been shot dead when armed police stormed the grandma’s home in search of a victim, Margaret Waitherero from Samar village in Maragua who had been kidnapped by her gang reports TUKO.co.ke. It was learnt the pastors who officiated the burials came all the way from Kayole in Nairobi and in Naivasha. An AK 47 assault rifle, a homemade gun and several bullets were recovered from the grandmother’s home during the raid. The kidnappers had demanded ransom from Waitherero’s family before they could release her, with police sources confirming that the woman’s husband had sent part of the ransom. She said, “I’ve always known and admired them, though as a screen couple that I love, admire, and respect so much.  I never expected that I would get to meet them in person one day. Funnily enough, Aunty Joke was one of the reasons I schooled at the University of Lagos. You know she speaks so eloquently. Her diction fascinated me as a much younger person back then and I told myself that I had to attend the school she graduated from. She is an inspiration to me. “Aunty and Uncle Jacobs are wonderful people who are mentors to me. Their lives as individuals and as a couple are exemplary. There are some couples who believe that if one gets a role in a movie, the other also should, since they’re both seasoned actors. So, when they’re together in a movie, they interpret their roles the way a professional should and when they’re not together, the other person is either holding the home-front or on the set of another movie. And they’ve carried on like this for many years without any squabbles.” She also expressed how elated she felt when she got the news that she was going to anchor their son’s wedding. She said, “Anchoring the wedding was a great experience for me. When I was contacted about the job, I was really excited. They are both veterans and you just have to give them that maximum respect. A man has detonated a small, low-grade bomb outside the United States embassy in Beijing, according to US and Chinese authorities, injuring himself but no one else. The explosion occurred at the south-east corner of the embassy compound, a heavily fortified structure in the north-east of the Chinese capital, at about 1 pm local time (6 am BST), The Guardian said. Chinese police said in a statement that the suspect was a 26-year-old man who hurt his hand while setting off a “firecracker-like explosive”. A US embassy spokesperson said: “According to the embassy’s regional security officer, there was one individual who detonated a bomb. Other than the bomber, no other people were injured, and there was no damage to embassy property.” Chinese police identified the suspect only by his surname, Jiang, and said he was from Tongliao, a city in China’s Inner Mongolia region. Police said he had been detained and taken to the hospital. They did not identify a motive. Videos and photos posted on social media earlier on Thursday showed smoke at a crossroads as groups of pedestrians gathered and police surrounded the area, which is home to several embassies. A Chinese police car near the embassy appeared to have been damaged. Witnesses reported hearing the blast. A witness who only gave his surname, Li, said he was cleaning the road outside the nearby Japanese embassy at the time of the incident. “I heard the sound of a big explosion and then women screaming,” he said. News of the blast spread quickly on Chinese social media, attracting nearly 1m views before search terms related to the incident were blocked. The bombing comes as China and the US are locked in a trade dispute. While Chinese officials and state media have been critical of the White House, there has been no groundswell of public anger towards the US. Within a few hours of the blast, police were ushering journalists away from the scene. Traffic was allowed to flow again and visa applicants were lining up outside the embassy. The state-run Global Times earlier reported that a woman spraying petrol on herself had been taken away from outside the US embassy on Thursday morning in what appeared to be a separate incident. A report by The Nation has shown that, Aisha Ibrahim, a 55 year old grandmother, has been arrested by the Niger state Police Command for killing her two year granddaughter by throwing her into a well. According to the suspect, she tied the granddaughter with a rope and threw her into the well in their compound at Karaya Fulani Camp in Rafi Local Government Area of Niger state. Aisha said that she carried out the action because she has been looking for a way to deal with her daughter-in-law adding that it was a payback for the insults and assaults she had received from her daughter-in-law. The grandmother saw an opportunity to carry out her act when her son, Bello Ibrahim and his wife left their child in her custody to attend a naming ceremony in their neighboring village “I told my husband to tell his son to divorce his wife but he did not listen to me. My daughter-in-law is fond of insulting and assaulting me all the time and the only way I could pay her back was to tie her daughter with the rope and throw her inside well to die so that she will equally feel the pains and agony I have been through. “We have been living in peace as one big family before my son married her, I have 12 children and all of us are living in one compound, she cannot come from nowhere to destroy the family I have suffered for years to keep, it is unacceptable,” she explained. The suspect who was trailed and arrested by the police detectives attached to Kagara Division while she was trying to escape said she regretted her action as she should not have yielded to the temptation. “It was temptation. I did not know when I did it, I cannot just tell but may Allah forgive me, honestly it was a wicked act that can never be accepted anywhere in the world”, she confessed. The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) Muhammad Abubakar said during confession to the crime, the suspect regretted her action adding it was already too late as the deed had already been done and she would be arraigned in court after investigation.
