requirements crash out during selection. Fewer quit during training
Not surprising.

Have we graduated any Ghanaian personnel prior to this training before?
Yes, for a number of years now I believe.

The Apaches are not for the British to give away. For any sort of transfer to happen, the British would need US congressional approval.

The Apache would alter the balance of power because that would mean a threat to French interests in the region. MI-35m / Z-9 are Russian and Chinese assets, no worries with that because those birds come from a different political landscape.

Yes, i said most likely any sort of helicopters would be utility. However, even this is highly unlikely, as from the tone of Boris Johnson, he wasn't to inclined with the idea of selling/transferring offensive equipment.
I never said it was to give away by the British Government as the point about permission from the US has already been mentioned. You don't have to have a Western system in the region before the US will introduce a new weapon as long as they are not the first to do so.

BTW, the lynx was also regarded as an attack (tank killer) heli by the British Army as used in Iraq.

Unfortunately i don't agree with this. In Africa, we have the regional powers and we also have France. France has militarily intervened in Africa more than 25 times since 1962. The country currently has 4,000 troops stationed in Africa with permanent bases in at least 5 African countries.

I have not seen an AH-64 exported by the UK government. It is not transferable, only Boeing has the right to sell the AH-64. The US government will reject any move to transfer excess Apaches to Nigeria. Sorry, these sorts of deals don't happen all the time.

Nigeria is asking for, it doesn't mean we are going to get them.

The Tucanos are sophisticated with an impressive plethora of munitions however they are quite limited in thier scope of use. None of the scenarios they are going to be employed in is a direct threat to France or French interests. This is why the US government will never sell the F-16, even the most basic model to Nigeria.
There is a possibility it could happen regarding the Apaches from the UK as several D models are in storage (others are going to be upgraded to the E model). It won't even alter the balance of power in the region as such because of the Mi-24/35s that Nigeria and other West/ Central African states operate. Even the Cameroonians operate night capable Z9s from China.

The most likely though would be retired Lynx MK9s.

Xbee007:
And according to BBC, Nigeria's Tucano will come with the most "basic configuration". Meaning, it will be stripped down of every modern avionics before it is sold to us just like they did on our Alpha Jets.
Did you know that Cameroonians Alpha Jets have more advanced avionics than Nigeria's even though they were built by the same company? Nigeria's Alpha Jets can't fire laser guided missiles only dumb bombs and we probably bought ours at exorbitant price.
In short, the Tucano deal, I think, is a blo*dy rip off.

"These aircraft offer improved targeting capabilities, allowing Nigeria to more effectively lead the fight against Boko Haram and the ISIS West Africa branch, while also potentially reducing risks of collateral damage and civilian casualties,” the source said, using an acronym for the Islamic State group"

You are right bro, Iraq got about 20 Tucano's for 425million dollars including spares, ammos, and missiles am sure our 12 wouldn't come with missiles yet we are paying this much, look within and tell me it makes any sense.... It sucks
It includes hangers, aviation equipment/infrastructure, maintenance apart from training and ammunition, which would include precision guided ammo.

This is what comes with operating a 4th the generation aircraft. Even in the West, upgrades are being done to aviation infrastructure at no small cost to introduce 5th generation aircraft.

The sale also includes all associated training, spare parts, aviation and ground support equipment, and hangar, facilities, and infrastructure required to support the program, DSCA said in a statement Friday.

That's my biggest fear. However with the Alpha jets, we kept them flying despite European sanctions in the early 90s, don't you think we can do same with these?
Most probably, although it may mean cannibalising a few to keep others flying to start off with. There is always the possibility of black market parts from Brazil if necessary wink

I wonder what new equipment the COAS is talking about?

In the Nigerian Army Special Forces School Buni Yadi, he took time to inspect some newly acquired equipments, weapon handling and firepower demonstrations by the troops, after taking part in their physical training and exercise

"The department notified the US Congress, which has 30 days to approve the deal, of the $593 million foreign military sale on 2 August. The package includes the aircraft, weapons, training, spare parts and facilities to support the programme, according to a 3 August announced by the Defense Security Cooperation Agency."

Makes sense, so the 8 soldiers who were killed were part of the security detail attached to the NNPC workers then ?
Could well be although there are conflicting reports they were on clearance ops.

“So far, they have rescued all the NNPC staff and recovered the corpses of the Officer, 8 soldiers and a civilian have who have been evacuated to 7 Division Medical Services and Hospital.
Those soldiers were killed when the workers were abducted. The Special Forces rescued the hostages and recovered the bodies of the soldiers.

Could be wrong.

Going back to the Chief of Naval Staff's comment. We can now strike out a few items from the list he made.

-The now confirmed SSV from Indonesia should cover up the proposed LPD to be purchased.

- 3 Helicopters have been bought .

- 1 Seaward Defence Boat currently valued at 10 million dollars is currently being built at the Naval dockyard in Lagos.
I should have known that everything has already been ordered because that is the way things are done in Nigeria. grin Soften the public first then strike grin cool

Henry240:
We keep buying more and more OPVs, this obsession won't stop. We already have 5, why get any more?

I'll probably hold on, on the Submarines, invest in other areas first. At the minimum we should have 1 Frigate, 2 Corvettes and 4 missile boats.
There can never be enough OPVs to patrol our maritime domain 24/7 as you probably need at least 3 to keep 1 on permanent patrol. They are more suitable and cheaper to operate for the maritime threats we currently face as Covert1 alluded to.

I agree to building up the Frigate/Corvette fleet and the Submarine is still many years away anyway.

Damn we are getting that Indonesian vessel for sure, its only a matter of time, if only the chief of Naval staff was in the same love triangle as the chief of sir staff, the chief of army staff and the president maybe extra budgetary funds would be easily accessed by the navy.

At $45 millions each that thing is a ripoff to the seller and of course the navy is not stupid, so it will get a multipurpose Frigate, the contracts will most likely be executed simultaneously.
I agree.
Foreign AffairsRe: African Militaries/ Security Services Strictly Photos Only And Videos Thread by rka2: 7:25pm On Jul 17, 2017
Let's hope this comes to pass.

"According to him, the proposed funding for maritime safety architecture is expected to enable the Navy acquire a General Purpose Frigate valued at $350 million; Long Endurance Offshore Patrol Vessel valued at $120 million; Medium Endurance OPV estimated at $60 million; Landing Platform Dock worth $350 million and a Landing Ship Tank valued $90 million.

Others include a submarine worth $300 million; a Sea Defence Boat and Naval Helicopter estimated at $10 million and $25 million respectively."

Probably VVIP configuration, rivers state should come and carry their helicopters, If not NAF leadership is now different I'll say there's an 80% chance they'll be used as VIP air taxis for high ranking officers instead of being utilized for combat duties.
Nothing surprises me anymore. Even the armed Mi-17 is used as an air taxi sometimes.

I guess the NAF just got two new Bell 412 Helios , which can be weaponized.
They may have been imported by Rivers State Government.
