foolish talk grin a lot of Nigerians are dying everyday cause of the terrible security situation in the country, I pay tax so I have the right to ask questions. Or is it when I start showing you videos/pictures of about 12 people that were buried in katstina yesterday cause they were massacred on July 3 you will know buhari has totally failed in protecting the life and properties of Nigerians.
I don't give a jot about politics as there are threads for that grin I am just interested in the military devoid of anything else as nothing I say will change anything.

Did you do any research before coming to these conclusions? undecided undecided

I highly doubt you did.

The UK spends over 2% of GDP on Defence. Nearly 50 billion dollars.

NATO threshold is 2%. Many countries in NATO including Germany do not spend up to 2% of GDP on Defence.

On the F-35s, the UK currently has 17 units of the B model in service. They are to serve on their new aircraft carriers. The UK has pledged to buy 138 F-35Bs.

How you came to a conclusion that they have cut their F-35s to only a few numbers is a pigment of your imagination.

My brother, how can an Infantry Fighting Vehicle replace a Main Battle Tank? Haba Bros undecided

There new aircraft carriers are not nuclear powered.
That's right about the F-35, which I forgot to mention. LTGEN provided the info.

The Brit's defense industry is still top-notch but their defense budget is falling fast.

You know without proper funding and local patronage, the industry will start losing its edge.

It's like their political class is trying really hard to self destruct the military complex.

Critics are saying that they lack backbones.

Their once powerful Navy is on the decline, their type 45 destroyer is always suffering malfunction.

Most of their submarine fleet don't go out to seas, they've withdrawn their highly successful upholder class diesel electric subs with no replacement in sight.

I think they've forfeited global presence for regional dominance. Their only far away commitment is the Falklands island.

Thank heavens that they managed to build 2 nuclear aircraft carriers.

They've cut their F-35 orders to a few dozens.

The Brit's Chally 2s are still currently one of the best MBT out there. Also, their new family of Ajax AFV are awesome too.

I don't think the Ajax was meant to replace the Chally 2 though.

But you have to understand that their real market base is in the middle East. Oman, Jordan, Bahrain etc. Not in Africa.
Hope you don't mind, but just a few points to correct/alter.

The Type 45 destroyers were having problems in hot climates because the destroyer was underpowered and that is about to be addressed as they have to cut into the hulls to replace the propulsion systems.

The Upholder Class was sold to Canada as they wanted to maintain an all nuclear powered submarine fleet.

HMS QEII & HMS POW are not nuclear powered. They are powered by 4 diesel engines as well as a Rolls Royce main engine.

Apart from the Falklands, the Royal Navy also deploy to the Caribbean during hurricane season to assist dependent territories and others. Also, they have set up a new naval base in the Middle East HMS JUFAIR in Bahrain.

For those who don't understand amphibious warfare, what would you say about British SBS wearing life jackets.

It is what is done on operations because you can drown, whether you can swim or not. It is only divers who don't wear them for obvious reasons.

Actually all three of us are correct because Nigeria has all those problems not only one. Our case has no known cure yet. Nigerian Army has equipment-weapons problem, training-doctrine problem, tactics-strategy problem, financial-accountability problem, sanitation-dirty barracks problem (enter dem toilet see armoured shit). The politician-doctor with our cure is still in primary school.
Long established problems. If the NAF & NN to an extent , can re-strategise, why not the NA? It isn't just restricted to the military, but many facets of Nigerian life. Unless Abuja is threatened directly again, the political class will not budge.
Most of them are too militarily illiterate to understand the vast amount of money needed to train and equip the security forces.

I am beginning to think the USA was right back in the nineties when they wanted the NA reduced in size and better trained. We would have had a more efficient, mobile and better equipped force rather than the cumbersome, ill equipped and underfunded neanderthal force.

This is not primarily an issue of equipment but of training and doctrine. I used to be an advocate of new weapons but I guess I am no longer cos anything u buy for this present Nigeria Army they will surely gift it to BHT
Not necessarily training and doctrine but the way FOBs are set up with zink and other inappropriate materials. Also no situational awareness either with drones, or recce units. How come they lose equipment at FOBs but not usually anywhere else. They mostly defend themselves during ambushes and don't lose equipment when they are on the offensive.

The Royal Marines or British Paras are not SOF, not even close to it. I can only speak of the British Paras because I was in the same brigade as them, trained with them, and deployed with them. The only difference between the Paras and other British Army troops is that the Paras have a higher physical fitness requirement to get in and remain in, they also need to do a jump course to get their wings. This doesn't make them SOF though, anyone in the wider Army can undergo the jump course, pass it and get the wings. The UK isn't like the US where anyone can do undergo a physical fitness course, do a few jumps and call themselves SOF. It's a separate pathway entirely outside the regular Army. When I was with the American 82nd Airborne, 99.9% of soldiers I saw there had a SF badge. It's because they have a different 'easier' system there compared to the UK.

Plus, when you talk about 'the Paras', it's a bit of a misnomer because there are 4 units in the Paras of which only 1 Para is ever held at high readiness to support the British SF. 2 and 3 Para are regular Army troops as I mentioned above. 4 Para are a bunch of wannabe civilians who claim to be a reserve airborne unit. Personally, inasmuch as I acknowledge the high physical regime and winged up status of the Paras, I wouldn't even consider them to be 'elite'. A guy joins the Army, undergoes and passes a fitness course, gets his wings. It doesn't make him 'elite'.
Whatever you say.

http://www.eliteukforces.info/16-air-assault-brigade/

What is in a name? A country's forces that respond first to a crisis can be regarded as the elite and in essence, SOF. Just like the Panthers.

BTW, don't turn your nose up at reservists. I have a friend who was in 10 Para TA before they were disbanded in 99 and I recall stories of them out performing regulars in exercises.

I watched this documentary I couldn't help but laugh at what the Nigeria Air force was calling special forces. How do women make it into special forces? Countries like Russia, USA, Israel, France, Germany, Poland, Norway to mention a few have a well trained special forces outfit and we know that the failure rate is very high. Hundreds of serving military personnel enter the program but only few graduate. The chief of Air staff should tell us he trained regiment personnel in base defense and other duties. No doubt the tactics taught to them is better than any other training available in the airforce but it is not enough to call them SPECIAL FORCES. How do you train over 2000 special forces soldiers in just 2 years? Unless they're not tier one operators, that feat can't be achieved. In what world do soldiers enter for such training and most of them graduated? Only in Nigeria. Special forces personnel that upload pictures of themselves on Instagram constantly, no secrecy whatsoever? The airforce chief has tried but he should stop over hyping his achievements.
There are over 1000 SOF not 2000 taken from NAF Regiment personnel. Base Defence personnel are normal Regiment troops trained to defend NAF bases. The Panthers are more SOF like the Royal Marines or British Paras in being elite forces rather than the traditional SF that we know. NNSBS are more the traditional SF.

The more courses they branch out in, the more they become SF i.e. like CSAR aand other specialist courses. It takes a long time to train SF and even the CAS said that when the Panthers personnel graduate, they are even sent for further acclamitisation courses where they are posted.

Remember also that some are eliminated in the pre-selection training.

NAF has settled for 2019 budget procurement of new advanced trainer jet l-39 ng next generation. The new jet has guiding laser bomb and air to air missiles unlike old l-39 ordinary non-guiding weapons. NAF will mix total conversions and fully brand new, the body will be new mixed with old engine for conversion, while new ones will be fully new to be delivered 2020-2022. Senegal saw NAF alpha jet actions in Gambia and decided to compete, Senegal is building new powerful air force with same l-39 ng and will join NAF in West Africa flying this new jet. For NAF this may kill yak-130 trainer option, since l-39 ng next generation is very advanced for lead in 4th gen and 5th gen trainer/light attack jet. As soon as 2019 budget NAF allocation is paid out, NAF is paying for this jet confirmed.

Can’t believe we are struggling with all this insecurity in the country and the best thing politicians can do is give the army less money... NA won’t give up on their push for an aviation arm sha, in a very recent interview I heard the COAS say the navy police and even immigration all have an air arm so why shouldn't the army.

By the way, that 1 billion dollars intervention fund was never released to the military according to the service chiefs, so what exactly is the status of that money ? Is PMB still dragging with law makers ?
How long has the insurgency been ongoing? One would think that at least 10 percent of the national budget would be for capital arms expenditure until the security situation is resolved.

I think it will happen long term, but be ready for many frustrations along the way grin

As for the intervention fund, I am waiting for them to surprise us angry

NA aviation stop trying to buy air taxi for generals grin invest in proper multi-role light attack helos so troops can stop complaining about lack of air support from NAF
You may have a long wait as the COAS is even trying to replace 40% payment of the intended NA Aviation Helis with armoured vehicles.

“The National Assembly should change the 40 per cent second installment payment for purchase of 3 x LUH AS-350 for NA Aviation with the procurement of Armoured Personnel Carrier “A” Vehicles.

If anyone is interested in NAF's Strategic 10 year plan go to their website and under Publications and then downloads, there is a PDF with the NAF strategic plan from 2017 to 2026, which they appear to be following at the moment.
It gives updates on plans for every NAF section, although there are sensitive sections left intentionally blank or redacted, but you can get the gist where they are headed.

They plan to decommission the Alpha Jet and G222 in the 2021 to 2023 time frame and will also upgrade the L-39 with a glass cockpit and new engines. They are looking at the Alpha Jet and G222 replacements and there is a timeline for delivery of new aircraft and equipment needed on the ground.
