I don't know why some Nigerians (and others) are like this. You complain that units are not well kitted etc. You have a newly created unit of Spec Ops troops for the NAF that originated with the guys sent to Belarus etc and formed part of the AFSF.

The unit was relaunched and named the PANTHERS and inducted with the new MRAP. Lots of photos were taken at the time, which are still appearing. Then someone complains that all they do is take photos. If no photos they will say Nigerian Armed Forces are too secretive.

Any opportunity to belittle, you will line up and do so. I just tire.

Can you give me an instance france ran into cameroonian help during this fright against BH or ISWAP. I knew you would bring up this example but thats 2015 if am not wrong bring something recent. We are a small country and we face multiple threats, the crises in the anglphone region, the Central african rebels trying to cause havoc in th eastern region of the country and not to forget the BH issue but yet the Cameroonian Armed forces and up to the task not saying NA isn't. Everyone knew Cameroon would be the weak link in this coalition but it has proven to be wrong.
You said quote me one and I did.

Nigerian Armed Forces are operating in most states of the Federation on multiple fronts. Cameroon is and never was the end game for BH. NE Nigeria is. A lot has been learnt and is still being learnt. One is a properly set up FOB and another is training sufficient soldiers in Spec Ops and COIN to handle asymmetric warfare.

This is just one.

Nigeria was and is the epicenter of BH & ISWAP who were hellbent on setting up a caliphate in NE Nigeria.

Now let's be honest. Do you think the far North of Cameroon would still be Cameroonian territory if it was the target of the jihadists without France coming to the rescue?

There is no reason to add insults and sacrasism when we are having a simple and instructive debat sir. I have never heard of nigerian soldiers operating in cameroon thats what i meant to say. don't also hide behind your mistakes and defeat by pointing out the no right to pursuit policy. i think nigeria didn't alloz cameroonian soldiers to pursuit BH in their territory.
Defeat? You mean set-backs. Like Cameroon, Chad and Niger didn't have set-backs. Mali just lost 16 soldiers when their base was overrun. It happens, not a reason for you to want to take the high ground.

Looks like the NN ordered new boats from Ocea in France - C-Falcon interceptors.

"Among the smaller fast boats production family, Ocea also unveiled a new family of interceptors including the ordered four C-Falcon for the Nigerian navy, which modular design is capable to accomplish a variety of missions, from fast transport to anti-surface operations."

What army hasn't run (retreated) at one time or the other due to various reasons? The issue is who wins the war and not particular battles. Some armies in a particular region have reputations that precede them.

Cameroonian bir seem to frequently cross the border into Nigeria to hit bht targets. Howcome Nigerian army just sits on its side of the border and let bht cross at will and even let them establish bases in Nigeria. These bht have bases, the army should be going after them wherever they are.
Because Nigeria (NE) is the prize not Cameroon or Chad. That being said, Nigeria should be more proactive and have a troop surge in the NE.

I see some people are still unhappy with the NA winning any battles and still come out with statements we already know.

The problem is with other parts of the country not understanding that Nigeria is at war and the Government/military reinforcing this by not. going all out with everything we've got instead of electioneering.

When will all politicians wake up, come together to fight this menace, then continue with elections for those who can be bothered with it?

Nobody takes your revisionism seriously. None of us was born yesterday, you can't just revise what happened before our very eyes. Stop playing politics if you want to be taken seriously. When Jonathan left he had reclaimed Baga, right now the army has lost Baga. Many of the equipments Jonathan bought for the military have changed hands since then. So basically Jonathan's exit level was better than the current level of things. Just stop pretending otherwise, it doesn't portray you in a good light at all.
So, the soldiers are now different? undecided shocked No be same army?

HORRORIZON:
You obviously did not watch the video. The group was not a existing group prior to their mission to go and secure this location. Most never even trained or fought together. They were a mismatch of men randomly scavenged out of various other units that were already fighting elsewhere in Afghanistan. Once they were assembled they were immediately hurried to a chopper and sent off to defend this remote backcountry depot from 500 Taliban fighters.

Many of them never even fired there weapons in combat before. There were sone Danes with them at first that were very well armed but they were pulled out to got to another mission leaving the Brits very under equipped to properly deal with the enemy, But they didn't complain, they didn't run away and they didn't panic, enabling them to continuously stay fucus and in control of the fight, even after losing several men in the process.

These were not special op soldiers by any means, but you can tell that they were well educated and most of all DISCIPLINED, witch allowed them to continuously think and act well under pressure. Nigeria's Army needs to begin recruiting better qualified men and women. They need more intelligent and disciplined recruits. Another thing one will notice about the Brits in that video is that they where an ethnic hogwash of men, many were Irish, some English, some Scotts and one was even Fijian, I rarely see this type of ethnic mixture going on in the Nigerian Army units I've seen on youtube.
You have said nothing different from what I alluded to. The British are trained as a battle group before being deployed, that is different battalions and units under the battle group. There can end up being adhoc units deployed to any given scenario and the result is the same. Fijians, Africans, West Indian(commonwealth) Nepalese (Gurkhas) are part of the British Armed Forces and the training is the same.

They don't even have to be elite units like the Royal Marines or Paras. A British soldier is trained very well.

I don't have to watch that particular video to know how the British fight. I have watched documentaries following deployed units to Iraq and Afghanistan and seen the ups and downs.

No doubt the NA lacks discipline, but what do you expect when people join for the wrong reasons and the military hierarchy are more interested in what they can get for themselves before retirement.

The country is not serious, not just with the military, but in different aspects as in infrastructure, Health Care, Education etc.

Henry240:
Happy New Year Sir. God bless you and your family.

We need to be hard on the military, the era of praise singing the Nigerian military is gone for me. We need to face reality and get our acts in order.

My brother, you need to find a way to watch that British documentary. Machine Gunner Paul Johnston had never fired his weapon in combat, Intelligence officer Kruyer had never fired his weapon in combat despite haven being in the army for nearly 20 years.

They were so poorly armed, 88 men in an isolated FOB in Musa-Qala, armed with only 2 Heavy Machine Guns, 1 Doctor, 2 Medics and a Quad-bike.

They were that inexperienced and poorly armed, that's why i constantly site Easy company as an example of what can be achieved with good training or the implementation of good training.

It was a full blown Forward Operating Base, not a patrol. In the 55 days the men were in that base, they never left the compound, they only repelled attack, after attack. This is why it is such a good example yet again.

I don't know how you're going to do it, but try watch that documentary.
I don't disbelieve you as I have said, the British train a battle group for a year before deployment, chef, doctors the lot. So even new/inexperienced soldiers will perform with the experienced ones in their midst. It is in the British psyche.

You must also remember that some of the British FOBs mostly had to put up with terrorists on foot launching attack after attack. I even know of one instance of British troops in a FOB where they held out for quite sometime and the enemy got so close they had to fix bayonets.

I don't think anyone wants you to praise without reason, but fault generally lies with the top brass. We do know there is corruption and it is even worse with the politicians. You have a country this large and dominant in West Africa, yet look at the military.

Even Senegal in better equipped. Until we have politicians who stop politicizing the military and invest heavily in proper training and equipment, this situation will continue.

One can only blame Nigerians for supporting and electing the same set of crooks over and over again. The nigerian psyche has to change and it includes the common man in the street.

Nigerians should put pressure on the government whether through their Representatives or peaceful protests. Well, I have said my piece and hope things change, it not, then I feel sorry for the country.

I am no longer directly affected as I have dual nationality and well away from all the wahala.

No sir. it doesn't matter who the attacking force is. It shows how your hold ground and defend your position against attacking elements.

Both the British and Thai showed a lot of dexterity and composure in defending their positions against attacking elements. That's what we need to learn.

The British had to deal with mortars.

BHT don't bother carrying heavy equipment because they can't support them. The stole a BM-21 but the Air Force quickly destroyed it.

A standard Nigerian army gun-truck is heavily armed and comes in a configuration of a 12.7mm or 14.5mm. We gave the capability to defend our position against insurgent attacks.

The British base is basic, no Hescos, just sand-bangs and blocks.
Oga Henry, you can't compare British soldiers with Nigerian regular soldiers, who in some cases were sent directly to the NE with little experience. I have watched several documentaries of British Soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan I know how heavily defended their bases are. The documentary which I couldn't watch was most probably a patrol that was caught up in an ambush at a specific location rather than it being a base (Nigerian troops have fought their way out of ambushes as well).

Then again, you can't really compare British troops to Nigerian regular troops because they are trained to a very high standard before deployment. A battle group is sent to Salisbury Plain to train on realistic scenarios for a year before deployment and also sometimes to Nevada in the US.

Only AFSF, HQ Srike Group and the like are trained to such standards, which takes time. Nigerian SBS are on a different level, but unfortunately, you can't mass train class.

Brings me back to my original assertion. Why deploy our regular troops to ill suited FOBs and other badly constructed bases, which is half of the problem? Yes, there are training issues with the regular troops, which is why I said Eeben Barlow style mobile teams are the best way forward.

COIN warfare is a specialist discipline and not one for regular soldiers who are ill prepared and without the required set-up. Many years have been wasted when more SOF battalions could have been set up to prosecute the war with proper training.

Anyway Happy New Year to you and don't be too hard on the troops grin  and yes, some do lack discipline and their unit commanders are to blame for how they behave and dress.

Ambushes are easier to deal with when mobile as it was part of the training with Eeben's team. Remember, there was also Air Support with the mobile units.

Henry240:
We're actually far off. It's the training that own troops have received, that's why we can't build proper defensive fortification.

Poor training at all levels of the Nigerian army, equals the disaster we currently are witnessing in the Northeast.

The British in the example i had earlier provided in Musa-Qala had a very poor base. It was a mud compound with short walls.

In fact let me go look for that documentary and post it here. It's a must watch for everyone.

You'll see that even Nigerian soldiers were better equipped than those British soldiers in that base.
Poor engineering support, hence the troops shouldn't have been set up in these bases in the first place as the NA aren't an expeditionary force considering vast areas of the NE have for a long time been ungoverned. They should have stuck with the tactics of Eeben Barlow and continued to establish mobile units to continually harass them while investing in new equipment including field engineering and logistics as well as heli-borne forces.

Here's another good example. In the 2008 war between Cambodia and Thailand.

This what you get when troops are properly trained. This is how to defend your position.

Cambodian Forces attacked Thailand positions in force but were quickly pushed back by Thai forces, suffering significant losses and leaving behind their own bodies forcing the Thais to drag them back to Cambodian line.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z6_1GEovIVU
Henry, this video is of a conventional army taking on another conventional army from opposite directions and each side trying to avoid being killed. ISWAP/BHT attack from multiple fronts with no fear and ready to die sacrificing themselves time and time again.

Nigerian troops mostly at these FOBs have nowhere of note to shelter from AAA fired from distances, while most of their tracked vehicles have broken down and T-72 tanks stop firing after one round. Why do you think BHT don't bother capturing them and just burn them?

I can't view the British clip where I am as it is blocked by the makers due to copyright. Nigerian bases are usually set up incorrectly with no natural barriers. Like I said, put some foreign troops in the same bases with the same equipment and see how they fare.

Yes, there are training issues, but I blame the army heirarchy for setting up these bases without proper engineering and logistic support. Foxholes, barbed wire fences etc. just don't cut it.
Foreign AffairsRe: Battle Field Discussion (picture/video) Of African Military . by rka2: 8:30am On Dec 31, 2018
Henry240:
That's what Training and Doctrine are.

If you don't have good training and an updated SOP, you cannot have a good base defence.

If you don't have good training, even if you have a good SOP for base defence, you still would not be able to implement them.

Training is everything, Nigerian troops have shown and proven to be poorly trained or they do not have the capacity to implement what they have been trained to do. This is what friendly troops continue to get overrun at almost every engagement with large groups of Boko-Haram, despite possession of superior firepower and equipment.
We are not far off saying similar things. A good base defence also involves fortified positions without rusty equipment that fail to fire or broken down. Look at American and British bases in Afghanistan. You will be hard pressed to breach it. Put American or British troops in those death trap bases with equipment NA have and I tell you they will be overrun.

There is nothing to classify. For your question, just type "drone strike civilian casualty statistics" on Google.
Yep! It does say a lot of it is unverified as locations of drone strikes are inaccessible to confirm, so a lot of guess work. Drone strikes targeting specific individuals are a bit different from targeting BHT, which in a lot of cases is after an attack by them.
