Lagos Boy:
Afe Babalola calls for laws to sue govt on bad roads

HeadlinesMar 10, 2011

OLA AJAYI, IBADAN

A legal icon, Are Afe Babalola (SAN) has called on the legislative arms in the country to amend relevant laws that would empower Nigerians who sustain injuries from road accidents caused by bad roads to sue and claim damages from government.

Bad Road
To him, the deplorable roads in the country are responsible for daily occurrence of auto crash and to check this, caution should be exercised before people are allowed to drive on our roads.
He said this just as he suggested compulsory medical test for those who demand driver’s licence so as to reduce carnage on our highways.
Babalola made the call at the 33rd annual general meeting/international scientific conference of the Association of General and Private Medical Practitioners of Nigeria which held in Ibadan Thursday.
At the conference entitled “Road traffic accident: The place of commercial bus drivers, motorcyclists and its health implications, he said the step would prevent issuance of driver’s licence to those who were not qualified to have it due to their health challenge.
While calling on the 774 local governments across the country to pay premium to community insurance, he advised the government to ensure that all vehicles plying our roads were measured to ascertain their weights.
If this step could be taken, bad roads occasioned by heavy weight of vehicles would last longer than what we witnessed in the country.
To reduce death and pains of accident victims, he advised that mobile hospitals/clinics were built on our major highways to enable them have quick access to medical help.
In his speech, the Minister of Health, Prof. Onyebuchi Chukwu, who was represented by Dr. Folake Majekodunmi tasked all agencies which are saddled with responsibility of ensuring strict compliance with traffic regulation to live up to expectation so that incessant deaths as a result of accidents could be nipped in the bud.

At least the seem to be people who still have a sane mind in that country.

Hey stop misattributing success. Moghalu, like any other member of CBN team, deserves credit, but to say he is the brain behind Sanusi is taking it too far. Sanusi had taken a number of major actions even before Moghalu came on board.

Wetin Mallam sabi? If by now, you still haven't seen Sanusi's brilliance, then I'm afraid something is wrong.
No doubt Sanusi has the character and drive to do what hes done (and I give him kudos for that) but his CV depicts a complete lack of knowledge and exposure.
Secondly why would a man appointed on the grounds of his risk management credentials go and hire an international foreign based risk management expert as deputy  undecided
Na only risk management and supervision CBN dey do ?
Like Soludo (another Anambrain) said, that is just 20% of the job.
And hes not just " like any other member of CBN team" hes the no 2 man.

Tell Soludo to engage Sanusi Lamido Sanusi first. After destroying Nigerian banks, what kind of debate is he asking for?
Soludo on various occasion has accepted responsibility over his lax approach to banking regulation stated that he wished he'd done things a little differently.
He also stated that prior to his departure at the helms of CBN, he was on the process of ramping up banking regulation.

But he has pointed out tht regulation is only about 20% of his duties as CBN, and he considers himself to have scored high in the rest of the 80%.

Hon. Minister, or are you embarrassed to learn that even the AMCON you taunt as the ‘saviour of the banks’ happens to be one of Soludo’s initiatives?
shocked shocked shocked shocked shocked shocked
I NO KNOW O !. Habaaaaaa SANUSI !

In the same public presentation, I outlined to stakeholders steps we had taken to tighten and strengthen regulation and supervision of the banks as follows:

• Greater emphasis on enforcement of Code of Corporate Governance
• Resident Examiners have been deployed to banks since January 2009
• Standby teams of target examiners being deployed to any bank at any time to ensure timely regulatory actions if necessary
• Review of Contingency Planning Framework for Systemic Distress in Banks
• Introduction of Credit Bureau
• Advice to banks on risk management—-call for extra conservatism during time of crisis—- capital conservation, cost minimization, de-emphasis on size, salaries/bonuses, among others.
• Strengthening of institutional coordination through the Financial Sector Regulatory Coordinating Committee (FSRCC)
• Greater emphasis on e-FASS as a tool for banks’ returns analysis for speedy identification of early warning signals
• Consolidated Supervision and Risk Based Supervision have been adopted and arrangements are being made to migrate from the current fragmented sub-sectoral supervision to all-inclusive financial sector supervision
• All banks are to be examined in 2009 by consolidated teams of CBN, NDIC, SEC, NAICOM
Adoption of common accounting year end for all banks with effect from end-Dec. 2009, aimed at improving data integrity and comparability
• Adoption of the International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS)
• Review of BOFIA to strengthen regulatory capacity .
I think we all including Mr Aganga have been greatly misinformed by the present CBN management .

Can someone please help me with his qualifications @ oxford ?
In what field did he do a post graduate @ Oxford. (Accountancy/Economics/Thelogy) ?
What award did he earn @ oxford . (Masters/Phd/Post graduate diploma ?)

Why dont they (Sanusi and Aganga) put Soludo in jail if at all he has questions to answer.
The situation we are facing now is what happens when u remove more qualified people like Soludo and Iweala from office and replace them with relatively light-weights like Sanusi and Aganga.
Aunty Ngozi never even start.

The fact ladies and gentlemen is that the economy is being grossly mismanaged, not necessarily due to corruption, but due to incompetence.

I personally will want an answer to the above issues.

The Economy is Going Down, Soludo Warns – Thisday

Former governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Professor Chukwuma Soludo, has warned that if pre-emptive measures are not taken now, Nigeria’s economy is “doomed” to a worse form of structural adjustment programme (SAP) and “something will have to give”.

In an exclusive essay published in THISDAY today, Soludo, who also ran for governorship election in Anambra State in March, challenged presidential aspirants to debate economic issues before the general election.

Soludo expressed concern that the government had been piling up domestic and foreign debts with no improvement in the economy.

He wrote: “In spite of the heavy external debt of $34 billion and oil prices ranging between $25- $50 during the (ex-President Olusegun) Obasanjo’s second term, we managed to grow the economy at about 6-7 per cent per annum (from average of 2.8 per cent in the 1990s). We started saving for the rainy day when oil prices reached $35 and by 2007, despite paying $12 billion to write off the Paris Club debt in 2006, we had saved about $22 billion as ‘Excess Crude’.

“In the last few years, oil prices have averaged $70 to $85 per barrel. What has happened? We have spent the $22 billion saved under Obasanjo, and now massively borrowing at an alarming rate (domestically and externally) during a period of unprecedented oil price boom, and yet the economy remains static at 6-7% growth rate. Recurrent expenditure of the public sector has more than doubled since 2004, leaving very little for investment.”

It puzzles me though that the TIMES man of the year for 2009 was Ben Bernanke but he was not good enough to be central banker of the year 4 this magazine.

Personally, I acknowledge sanusi's imapct in sanitising the banking sector but the effects on  the economy has been negative so far.
This administration has been the worst ever in terms of Fiscal, monetary and budgetary policies.
And I mean even compared to the Abacha and IBB eras.

I do appreciate him speaking out against the amount of money spent on legislators though.

This above pre-statement by SR has got me suspicious and thinking. Dora a minister of info, releases a press statement and the only publishers are the much despised SR.
I'll wait until I get a report on one of the regular news outlets.
