ENUGU – MUSLIM community in Enugu North senatorial districts, Thursday called on governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi to recognise and include them in the affairs of governance.

The leader of the Muslim community, Alhaji Sani-Muhammed Ugwuanyi, who made this call during an interview in his residence at Nsukka, few days after Sallah celebration, commended Ugwuanyi for his commitment in delivering good governance.

Amir Ugwuanyi also pleaded with governor Ugwuanyi to activate his earlier appointment of the Muslim leader as a Board Member in the State.

According to him, the governor had appointed him as State Board member when he visited Igbo-Eze South Local Government Area, the Muslim leader’s council area, on December 23, 2019 for governorship campaign, on grounds that he was “bigger than my earlier appointment as Executive Assistant (EA)”.

He disclosed that Enugu indigenous Muslims immensely supported the governor’s election and re-election projects and attended all his campaigns during the 2019 election process because of their belief in him. But according to him, he had not seen or heard anything about either EA or Board appointment since Ugwuanyi’s, alleged, proclamation.

The Muslim leader, who commended the governor for his good works in the State since he assumed office in 2015, adding that, “he is performing; Governor Ugwuanyi is doing very well, no doubt about that,” also stressed that even though he would like the governor to activate the board appointment, but that he was more concerned about many of their indigenous members who were graduates but jobless.

“The issue is that in as much I want the hardworking governor to make true my appointment, I am more concerned about our children – Igbo Muslims of Enugu State extraction – young graduates but without jobs. We appeal to Governor Ugwuanyi to recognize us, our leaders and our children, and carry us along” he pleaded.

He however, lamented the alleged outrageous mismanagement of the affairs of the State’s Muslims Pilgrims Board (MPB) and called for the governor’s quick intervention to put the house in order. He noted that he had received several complaints from different quarters, and as well expressed dissatisfaction and lack of confidence on the present leadership of the board.

While stressing on the rising insecurity in the country, Amir Ugwuanyi, declared that the government knew the solution to the problem, saying that, “government, right from the central down the line, knows what to do to exterminate the problem or at least, drastically reduce it. Take it from me, they know what to do, no need stressing on it,” he insisted.

On herdsmen-related security challenges in the State, Amir Ugwuanyi stated that the Muslim community had a representative, in the person of Alhaji Yusuf Sambo, who he said was handling the matter, in partnership with the government, expressing hope that the situation would soon be over.

He commended Governor Ugwuanyi for his proactive, humble and peaceful manner of handling sensitive challenges and overall government architecture, and declared full confidence of the Muslim community in the governor.

Nnewi—Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, yesterday, alleged that Igbo governors have secretly donated lands in their respective states for RUGA, saying that IPOB will never allow that.

The group also alleged that all the antagonistic activities of Governor Dave Umahi of Ebonyi State are aimed at his ambition of becoming Vice President of Nigeria in 2023.

IPOB also alleged that Umahi is a mole in Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, working for All Progressives Congress, APC, and urged him to be bold enough now that his unwarranted attacks against IPOB is clear and his second term seat secured, to declare for APC.

IPOB, in a statement by its Media and Publicity Secretary, Emma Powerful, said: “We are in the know that Igbo governors have secretly donated lands in their respective states for RUGA, which IPOB will never allow regardless of how many of us die in the process of defending our land.

“Governor Umahi’s purported ban of IPOB activities in Ebonyi State is an exercise in futility, as it became dead on arrival following IPOB’s strong base in the state.

“Governor Umahi’s purported ban of IPOB activities in Ebonyi State was not the first time he made pronouncements that were not obeyed by Ebonyians, as he has in the past issued a Fatwa against our leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu and boasted that IPOB rally would never hold in Ebonyi State but it held.

“Umahi boasted to his fellow IPOB antagonists that our leader will be shot at sight if he dares enter Ebonyi State. But Kanu entered the state and Umahi and his co-travellers went into hiding because of the mammoth crowd that followed him on the streets of Abakaliki.

“Since the successful outcome of our peaceful protest and rally in Abakiliki against RUGA settlement in Ebonyi State, Governor Umahi and his government have become paranoid, no doubt acting on the instruction of his northern handlers.”

Awka - Anambra residents in Malaysia have expressed worry over the number of girls from the South East geopolitical zone being used in sex trafficking business in that country.

The residents, under the aegis of Anambra State Welfare Association Malaysia, ASWAM, said the situation had become embarrassing, adding that they would no longer tolerate it.

Chairman of the group, Mr Okwunwanne Mmaduka, said they were not only faced with the problem of sex trafficking, but also the issue of kidnappings in Malaysia.

He denied the insinuation that every Igbo staying in Malaysia were usually dubbed kidnap perso, adding that most of them were doing genuine businesses and studying at the same time.

He said that to state the true situation, they would meet the Obi of Onitsha, Igwe Alfred Achebe and other monarchs, Governor Willie Obiano and other stakeholders to brief them on the worrisome trend.

According to him, the group receives over 20 complaints each week on the activities of the traffickers, adding that a lot of them had lost their lives in the process as a result.

Mmaduka said the group had rescued most of them and sent them back to Nigeria, while some others had been sent to school in MaMmadukalaysia by the group, noting that the trend was giving Ndigbo bad names.

He said: “ASWAM is disturbed by the increasing cases of Anambra State women and girls in Malaysia falling victims of sex trafficking and commercial sexual exploitation ”

"ASWAM is therefore, employing community based and state wide campaigns to combat the menace of sex trafficking and other of commercial sex exploitation of Anambra women and girls in Malaysia.”

“We are taking the campaigns to our families, communities and traditional institutions here in Anambra State. We are raising awareness among our young people, parents, government and the public on the dangers therein.”

President Muhammadu Buhari on Wednesday assured members of the National Working Committee, of the All Progressives Congress, that he would be more conscious of the interests of the party when taking key decisions.

The president gave the assurance when he received members of the NWC of the APC at the State House, Abuja.

While pledging to uphold party supremacy, Buhari commended the National Chairman, Adams Oshiomhole, and other members for their sacrifices and overall success in the last general elections.

He said: “It is obvious that the success of the party was more paramount in your hearts. You could have deployed the time and energy you deployed for the party for your own personal use.

‘‘I respect the sacrifices you are making; you can only derive satisfaction if you are working for your country and all our people because, materially, nobody can pay you for the sacrifices.’’

President Buhari appealed to NWC members to abide by the constitution of the party, adding: “It is not enough to just criticise certain decisions of the party without first understanding what the constitution says.”

The President assured the NWC that competent members with the requisite experience would be invited to contribute their quota to nation-building as heads and chairmen of boards of government parastatals and agencies.

Earlier, Oshiomhole had congratulated the president on the electoral victory and noted that the NWC was meeting with him exclusively, for the first time after the elections.

The party chairman regretted that the party lost some states, but observed that great victories were recorded in Kwara and Gombe states.

‘‘In Kwara, we uprooted the ruling dynasty and inaugurated absolutely loyal and totally committed APC men at the helm of affairs,’’ he said.

While commending the unique leadership style of the president, Oshiomhole thanked him for his unflinching support that ensured the success of the party is holding the principal offices of the 9th National Assembly.
