Programming / Re: Why Nigerian Software Firms Are Absent On The Global Map by roflmao: 3:26am On Mar 26, 2007
The problems are in the fundamentals and foundation of the country's economy and industry. The IT sector in Nigeria isn't matured yet. In fact it's only just being born. To compete on an international stage you need companies that have successfully catered for the demands of local economy first. But that's not happening. The system is still heavily reliant on manual processes and setup. When automated and integrated systems find their ways into corporations, businesses, academic institutions, research centers e.t.c then the demand for Information Systems will flood in.

Another problem is the calibre of IT graduates produced by the universities. These guys are more than capable of competing with the conterparts at universities in US or Germany but their practical exposure is very limited. The universities lack resources which is a MUST when training students, especially in science related subjects. As such the work of a US graduate will most likely be better than that of a Nigerian graduate not because the American is better but because (s)he has been exposed to latest technology and resources used in the real world throughout his/her academic studies.
Computers / Re: Advantages Of Desktop Computers Versus Laptops? by roflmao: 3:04am On Mar 26, 2007
SMH @ "more heat = faster performance"! And what has keyboard, mouse, and monitor got to do? You can easily get your desired ones and plug them into your laptop just like you do your desktop. Battery life is a dodgy claim as well. My laptop runs easily for 3-4hrs on battery and I've watched two full length DVDs back-to-back on battery.

The legitimate advantages of a desktop have already been stated: cheaper, easier to upgrade or replace components, and less appealing to a thief! But that's price for portability and mobility. The only area desktop owns laptop is advance gaming and other processor intensive applications! Any else and certainly for the average PC user(i.e 90%+ PC users!) the laptop can do as desktop.

Things are even getting better with laptops: I read that battery capable of running for 8hrs could soon be in the market, Core Duo and Core 2 Duo and similar porcessors from AMD are already finding their ways into new ranges of laptop, and wireless networking is becoming the standard so laptops are becoming more popular than ever before. Laptops have been outselling desktops over the last 2-3 years as performace gap between closes up to insignifance.

Laptop = New Testament, Desktop = Old Testament! grin

SMH @ a retrieving clay-courter winning Pacific Life ahead of the likes of Roddick and Ljubicic. Even when Federer decided to give them a chance by exiting early these clowns still can't do nuthing! Their only real chance's just gone under water, Federer wouldn't be that lenient for a another looooooooooooooooooooooooooog time to come. Bunch of morons if you ask me.

Seun:

What's the MOTO GP? Please give us more information. Is it a racing competition?

Yes, MOTO GP is a racing competition and a MOTOrcycle racing hence the name. More info

I'm generally on-and-off with it so I do not have that in-depth knowledge of it as I do F1 or Tennis. As usuall Valentino is still the guy to beat. He was terribly unfortunate not win the title last season at the last race which I think may just have spurred him on even more to win it this year.

Federer just chose to make an exist cos he was feeling lazy this week. wink I'm worried my favourite playes all seemed to "choose" to go out early in the tournament. Federer, Berdych, Safin, Blake, ,
I only just realised they were all making way for one my other favourite young guns (Gasquet, Murray, Djokivic) or Gonzalez/Ljubicic to win their first master shied so it ain't that bad, cool
Sports / Re: F1 Zone: Formula One Racing by roflmao: 5:02am On Mar 13, 2007
F1 is a different ball game to all those wack American NASCAR crap. It's an European thing. It involves more technique, strategy, driving skills, and backing technical abilities by the team than NASCAR "bull" racing where it's all just power and muscle racing, why you think Montoya chickened out? Cos the clown couldn't cut it. kitten!

Oh, and by the way Ferrari for Constructor's and Kimi or Massa for Driver's(I don't really care who wins of the two. Long as it's a drivers in the Red colours of Ferrari - though I have a slight preference for Kimi). That spanish talkative ain't winning nuthing this year. He's done. McLaren ain't shyt! He was mad lucky in 2005 and 2006 Michael let him off the hook just cos he was about to retire, more like Smoke in Biker Boyz when he let that littel "yadah, yadah" kid win just to keep his mouth shut! cool. And no one needs to worry about that English one-trick pony. He ain't in the picture. His one-off victory last year should save him the embarassment of being tagged the winless driver when his career is done at the end of this season. grin grin grin

Yes I'm an obsessed Ferrari fan cool I'm not ashamed to say it. Reds for life. And just to reiterate: It's over for the Alfonso or whatever they call him. The rulers are back!!! cool cool cool

Career / Re: Masters From Abroad: Is It Worth It? by roflmao: 11:30pm On Feb 18, 2007
Yes but only if you're fully prepared and take full advantage of the opportunity. I'm not sure of other Western countries so I can only speak from perspective in the UK:

Studying abroad gives you access to latest technologies, facilities, resources, reputed academics, peers as well as exposure to what may be pioneering discoveries and research. You can also gain useful experience within your relevant sector by undertaking part-time employment while you're studying. On completion you are allowed to seek/take up fulltime employment for upto 12months to further experience. These are part of what could give a convincing resume which should boost your chances of employment with International companies (whom I'll assume pay the best salaries) when you return. Just the fact that you've spent some time living/studying abroad is a compelling fact for an employer because of little facts like being of the ways things work outside the shores of Nigeria and Africa (e.g. A British employer will be sure you must have learnt how to appreciate and value time as opposed to most people who might believe in the idea of Nigerian time grin grin grin). That's just one of the things you cannot teach - and there are lots of them! You have to experience it, see how much they value it, and then it becomes part of you.

Like I said you have to be prepared for it. You must see it as not only studying for your Masters but a whole experience to learn another culture and incorporate some of the intangible things you find useful into improving you as a person and ultimately in your career. Trust me there is nothing like experiencing the different cultures of this incredible world of ours. That's what brought and is still bringing most westerners to unusual territories such as Africa - why can't we do the same? Good luck.

Computers / Re: Win XP Account Lockout! Help Please by roflmao: 1:52am On Feb 12, 2007
I know about Cactus's Solution 2 but I'm not sure if XP would allow you to do it as Guest. Anyway another possible way is this:

XP Pro far as I know usually come with a separate Administrator account for this kind of problems. This account isn't normally visible at the normal logon but you can only access it in safe mode. Problem is lots of people don't know about this and some end up running their machine using this account unknowingly (, and against Microsoft's advice!) which makes getting out of this kind of problem harder. So if your friend is fortunately not in this group you can simply log into the machine in safe mode as Admin using this account(doesn't with with a password by default) and change your friend's account password from control panel or using Cactus's Solution 2.

Hope that helps.
Music/Radio / Re: 50 Cent At It Again: Disses Camron New Video by roflmao: 9:47pm On Feb 11, 2007
This beef shyt ain't nuthing serious. It's largely another publicity stunt by 50 and just entertainment at the end of the day. You don't expect Styles and 50 to start talking silly at each other like a couple of 10yr olds over the phone, live on radio! I heard the whole thing live and I remember both of them even confirmed they'd never spoken to each other before, go figure.

BTW Cam sonned the hell outta 50 when he came on the phone. So what did 50 do? He went on to shoot a video in his mansion in connecticut in the comfy of the NYPD's protection, SMH @ that. I mean what's the essence of shooting a diss video over a little lame argument on a radio show when you were the initial aggressor but felt umcomfortable when the odds turned against you? To make matters worse you shoot the lamest diss video ever in the backyard of your mansion in a sub-urban neighbourhood, displaying AKs and silver berettas while you and your crew sing the hook to the wack ass diss song.

For one thing 50 has never one a hip-hop battle and Cam is definately the last person he can redeem his image with. Dipset as a crew are comedians. Them dudes just clown people and so far Cam is already lived up to that. 50 is taking this whole thing really serious while Cam just making fun of him. This beef will be judged on who has the funnier diss and we all know Dipset are by far the funnier of the two crews so Cam win. 50 lost!

Cam: Cuuuuuuuuurrrrrrrrrrrrtis? How much did the Mobb sell Cuuuurrrtis?
Cam: 50 looks like a gorilla with rabbit teeth!

LMAO, can't wait for the next strike

Music/Radio / Re: Is Nas Really Claiming Nigeria? by roflmao: 8:07pm On Jan 22, 2007
SMH @ ya'll. Seem to me people just hell bent on associating the slightest suggestion of any respected foreigner to Nigeria. Nas AIN'T bleeping Nigerian goddamit!

Yes his name is Nasir so what? Nasir is an Islamic name and not a Nigerian name. In fact his name is Nasir bin Olu Dara Jones. Olu Dara being a name he took after his father. His father is a jazz musician who spent some time in his career performing around the world. He was given the name Olu Dara when he visited Nigeria and decided to adopt the name as his official name on his return to America. He was actually born Charles Jones III.

I mean there's the good ol' Wikipedia and Google to research things if ya'll need find out stuff, undecided

Computers / Re: How Can I View .rar Files by roflmao: 8:00pm On Jan 21, 2007
Though WinRAR used to be free. I certainly didn't pay for the copy I have on my PC, although I have to say I installed this in 2004,

Any 7-zip sounds pretty good and it handles the most popular archive formats on Windows system - zip and rar.
Travel / Re: Why Are Some Nigerians Abroad Scared Of Going Back Home? by roflmao: 4:29am On Jan 14, 2007
Personally it's adjusting to Nigerian society and uncertainty of my future. I'll be graduating in the summer after which I plan to work here for about 18months to pay off my debts and also gain valuable experience. I haven't been home in 6yrs since I left and I'd have preferred to return home but I have to get real and face facts which means I'll must follow my head and not my heart. I cannot gamble away my blood, sweat, and tears over the last 6yrs by returning home like that. My father is not a politician, I have no politician in my family and neither do I know one so I understand my chances are rather bleak. I have done a good job during my time here so it pretty obvious I have a great chance of a career around here.

Although I plan to leave the UK by the end of 2008 come what may I'll probably be heading for Switzerland or US. I'm planning to do my own little "world tour" by spending some time living in North America, Middle East, Europe/Latin or Central America in the next 10yrs to get a taste of other cultures. I think I'll be in a better position to decide where I want to settle after this. It may well be somewhere in African but I doubt it'll be Nigeria.
Religion / Re: Pre-Marital Sex Is Not Fornication by roflmao: 9:35pm On Jan 11, 2007
Reverend:

The truth of the matter nobody is wrong and nobody is right. If you think that pre-marital sex is wrong then don't do it, but don't preach and force your beliefs upon other people.

It seems that most of the arguments on Nairaland are from Christians that can not agree with each other. Everybody has their own interpretations of the scriptures and think their opinion is the correct one. They argue for days about the slightest of differences. Very funny tongue

It is so refreshing to be free from the religious mumbo jumbo and be able to think for ones self!

You should keep the Bible out of your Bedrooms, Knickers and Bras undecided

Sex and religion do not mix. Even when it between little boys and Catholic priests lipsrsealed lipsrsealed lipsrsealed

Word is bond Reverend. I'm a Christian but yo, Bleep what the Bible says: I'll bone all day till my casket's lowered (It's an abomination not to do so in family!)
Politics / Re: Re: White Man Cheating Us In Africa by roflmao: 7:57pm On Jan 08, 2007
I'm not taking any side because there are arguments for and against. It isn't particularly straight forward doing business with Africa which is why Africa lack foreign investment. You can't expect a company to go ahead and invest hundreds of millions in an environment that's politically and economically unstable. It's simply not worth risking. Don't you find it pathetic that Nigeria as a country does not have its own national airline? What does that say about us as a Nation? In the last 12months there've been more plane crashes in Nigeria alone than in EU put together and there is no legitimate evidence that the government gives a shyt about if that continues. All they do is run their mouth: No serious investment in Airport management or Safety implementation. God, I'm not even sure if a single member of either houses of government mentioned it for debate or any thing.

If you've ever traveled to Nigeria from the West it's no denial that Nigerians boast the biggest and heaviest baggages because things that are meant for shipping are rather taken to the Airport. But then that's because the people do not have any trust in the country's Port Authority.

On the other hand Airlines have no right to treat paying customers with contempt. If Virgin or BA are soo unhappy with flying to Nigeria then may be it's time they considered their decision to choose that market. I fully agree with what Mr Femi Fani-Kayode has raised but we also need to look inside ourselves if we truly want things to change.
