sulaak: I recall working at the Nigeria Secretariat, Ikoyi as an intern in the mid-1980s; we usually left our house at Alaka Surulere between 5:30-6:00 AM daily to beat the traffic. I was doing extramural A-Levels at that time and would have to leave my place of work at 4:00 PM to get to my evening class at 6:30 PM three times a week over a period of two years.
It was terrible in the 1980s and yet 10 times worst today, the overpopulation is the reason why Lagos is struggling to cope.
Despite Lagos losing its FCT role to Abuja, the population has tripled from 5-7 million in the 80s to 20 million today, it is not sustainable, and Nigerians must accept that the internal legal migration must be controlled. Infrastructure Development (Port, Rail and Road ) in the SS and SE must be priorities as well as dry ports in North Central and Northern Nigeria. |

Write to LIRS reporting this issues. jimcaddy: Many NIgerian companies don't follow the rules. Many remit taxes, which I'm not even sure is accurate most of the time, and they still don't even issue their staff their Tax IDs, which is very important when processing some applications. Our labour laws are so weak in Nigeria. Everything is weak in this country.. |

Quiet Promotion
Organization 1 Tobe: Soliloquizing, “My company moved into a new product line and despite being moved to head this division in addition to my present role, I wasn’t even given any additional perks or benefits to motivate me. I didn’t have the needed experience but I had to quickly brace up to meet expectations”. No formal letter of redeployment, promotion or additional work scope.
Organization 2 Yemi: “This isn’t fair at all, I can’t take this anymore. Why is the MD so hard and seems not to understand my pain. How can they saddle me with both audit and admin roles without any salary increase or change in job title letter after 1 year? “
Organization 3 Toju: “ Bimpe and Denis were asked to handover to me when they resigned to go for schooling in UK. No salary increase! no bonus! no nothing! no promotion after 12 months. I can’t continue. I can’t be doing 3 people’s role”.
Are you familiar with this scenarios?
it is called Quiet Promotion. It is when an employee’s job responsibilities or scope is increased without any formal promotion or notification taking place.
The employee is saddled with so much, beyond their capabilities sometimes, that they need to quickly learn the ropes and often go through stress and burn-out.
It is usually as a result of redundancy, tight economic condition, resignation without immediate replacement and diversification into another or additional product/service lines.
Due to economic tightening, most organizations are not in a hurry to quickly replace exiting employees thus this scenario is becoming more prevalent. Are you unfortunately caught in this web? You are not alone.
Dear Employers,
Quiet promotion if improperly communicated and managed effectively with job responsibilities and expectations aligning, it may result in the following:
👉🏽Bitterness 👉🏽Disengaged workforce 👉🏽High turnover 👉🏽Low productivity 👉🏽Mental stress and burn-out 👉🏽Absenteeism
Therefore, please ensure that this comes with the following:
👉🏽Short term arrangement otherwise formalise the role with more pay. 👉🏽Pay raise 👉🏽Promotion 👉🏽Fair compensation
To the employees, it is period of growth and upskilling. Have a one-on-one discussion with your immediate supervisor and document this in a formal letter.
It would be a disservice if this continues for more than 3-6 months. Let’s do the right thing and give right value.
Please feel free to share your #experience so others can learn from you. What is your take? |

Mayorofodemu: Exactly, been on the road since 4.21pm and reach home like 10.45pm, I was tired and even vomited while on the road.
Truth be told, exactly as you viewed it. You can’t be so exhausted when getting home and still expecting to perform your duties, is not possible. This is how many home marriages failed, cos of one them can’t keep up. Money is important to keep up your family, you have to work no matter what, and if you can’t another issues would set in. I recall a family friend was leaving home 4:00am and comes home till about 10:55pm, he never grew up with son. One day, he came home early and sat in the parlour when he over heard the son asking who is the uncle in the parlour. He resigned the following month despite the huge pay and benefits. |
Romance › Re: My Landlady Issued Me A Quit Notice For Hosting A Female Friend by Rubyjade: 2:12pm On Mar 27, 2023 |
You refused to hid to warning ForG: I moved into this apartment about two weeks ago. Mini flat, only myself, excellent neighbourhood; I'm constantly indoors and not social.
But the landlady has been a pest so far.
The property has three tenants, but only one has been there for over a year. The renter I replaced still works for her today, but quit the house only after a year.
The longest-tenured tenant (five years, married man with kids) warned me about her before I moved in. That she meddled in the affairs of her tenants. He is also desperate to leave the house this year.
Under the pretext of protection, she herself told me that she routinely informs her tenants' families of every move they make.
Today, the camel's back broke.
A female acquaintance of mine recently stayed with me for some days. The landlady took offence and informed me that she does not want any female visitors except a known girlfriend.
Before relocating, she had also said that she did not want much male visitors in order to avoid disruptive behaviour. Made sense to me security-wise. Wasn't a problem since I don't have male friends.
The next day, I saw her and informed her that an animal was running in the roof, as well as other anomalies I had noticed in the apartment. She said that it seemed I was dissatisfied with the home and that she would provide a full refund without delay.
I made certain to inquire whether the prohibition on female visitors was on security grounds, but she said that the residence was a Christian home where everyone must be family, notwithstanding the fact that the tenant before me was a muslim.
Today, my agent came on my door and informed me that the landlady had complained to him. We subsequently met with the landlady, who once again threatened a complete refund. She continued by saying that I am too young to have female companions because they would destroy my life.
I'm 23.
This evening I took the decision to collect the refund, cut my losses on the agreement and commission, and look for a new flat in the vicinity.
I had only heard rumours, but I had no idea such toxic home owners exist. The husband of over 33 years is pretty laid-back and even made a joke about my bringing a female acquaintance around to my guarantor.
The wife on the other hand is hell's fury. |

Mayorofodemu: That’s true. And to tell you the Lagos Tinubu built. I Laughed. I remembered back then on my wedding day, I spent almost 6hours inside traffic, imagined going back home from Ikoyi to ogombo, Lekki peninsula scheme 11. I almost faint, baba can’t make love to his wife, I just jejely do one round. And slept.
I don’t know what my tribe Yoruba’s are turning to nowadays, are we not a most accommodating tribe in Nigeria again? This could be attributed to the reason women in the axis cheat, because truth is, after spending hrs in traffic you will be useless at night |

Why was I paid lower than my expectation?
📌I once had a salary conversation with someone who recently just got a new job. He expected a particular amount of money in his account by month end, but he then got something different (an amount lower than his expectation)
📌What really could have happened? This wasn’t what I negotiated. If the company is not low on cash then this can be traced to a communication gap in Gross/Net Salary negotiation.
📌Make sure you KNOW the difference between your gross salary and your net salary. This is key!!!
📌Gross Salary: is the total amount of income you receive from all sources each month.
📌From all sources includes salary, bonuses, overtime, investment income, interests, Social Security and any other income sources.
📌Meanwhile, we can also refer to gross salary as “pay before deductions” This is what you earn BEFORE your taxes are being deducted from it.
📌Net Salary is your ‘take home’ AFTER all reliefs and statutory deductions has been taken care of.
📌Reliefs are meant to reduce the tax burden of a tax payer such as Consolidated Relief Allowance (CRF) which is calculated as thus:
N200,000.00 or 1% of your gross income whichever is higher, plus 20% of your gross income.
📌Statutory Deductions which are your;
1. Pension (8% from the employee and 10% from the employer)
2. National Housing Fund (NHF) (2.5% of your Basic Salary)
3. Pay As You Earn (PAYE) requires a little calculation to be done on your taxable income.
Note
📌Once Pay As You Earn (PAYE) is being deducted from your salary, then you should have a Tax Payer ID.
📌Same with your Pension.
I believe you found this resourceful. |

These days, if you want to be a Head of Finance, you must know how to raise capital.
Companies seem more interested in showing off how much money they have raised, instead of building lasting businesses.
As someone who helps raise capital, I know that sometimes it's just putting lipstick on a pig.
The real problem is not raising capital but knowing how to use it well.
Sadly, companies have raised millions of dollars to waste on unnecessary costs or bad management.
Even though the media may be happy about these funding rounds, thousands of businesses are growing steadily and quietly.
I'm not saying businesses shouldn't try to raise capital. They should, of course. But there's a better way to approach finance than just chasing after funding.
By putting the most effort into making and keeping systems that make the best use of money...
...businesses can avoid the problems that come with not having funds.
As a small business owner, you don't have to be obsessed with raising capital to do well.
Instead, build a strong financial foundation and use good practices for managing money.
This will help you find and use all the resources you need to grow your business in a way that won't hurt it in the long run.
Contact a qualified financial professional if you need help managing your money. These are the skills you should be looking for.
Let's put money management at the top of our list of priorities and set up our small businesses for long-term success. |

The best decision I made so far was to leave my comfort zone.
What's that your comfort zone?
I left civil service when I almost reached the peak of my career at my youthful age. Proudly today, I enjoy what I do.
Comfort zone might be your job, your place of residence, your family and your many more.
I am less concerned about any other thing but my success, my family and my career.
Too serious with work these days.
Many reports to submit, many presentations to make, many posts to write on and the engagements are too many. It's not easy to be an Accountant and the same time a consultant.
I am so sorry. I have an ongoing work on Departmental Vote Expenditures Accounts (DVEA) and the SAF framework, contributions are welcomed. We grow together.
Let me just update you on DVEA a bit.
DVEA is a government book of account equal to that your general ledger account in the private sector. But more powerful than your GL because it serves many purposes, among which are:
1. It reports performance against budget at a glance.
2. It shows the available balance per head and sub-head at a glance i.e it shows what's still available for spending during a financial year.
3. If probably maintains, it helps in preventing spending above your budget.
To me, DVEA is a control account in pulic sector finance.
With introduction of IPSAS, brilliant public sector Accountant can also deliver in private sector, if really wants to grow.
The document use in posting to DVEA include Journal Vouchers (JV), adjustment vouchers (AV), and payment vouchers (PV).
Never forget that your opening balances are from the estimate prepared departmentally, and approved by the legislative arm and implemented by the executive.
DVEA got complicated when there is adjustment to estimates in the approved budget, when there is virement or reallocation.
Your contributions are welcomed.
Among my achievements while in the public sector include development of excel template for preparation of final account from DVEA (GL) to SOFP. Implementation of IPSASs cash and accruals.
I started in the Local Govt as a messenger at my youthful age.... never call it a child abuse.
As ACCA would always says "Think ahead". I always think ahead.
"Oshé Olóòrun, o bo' jú mi je."
Keep on moving. Don't limit yourself, leave your comfort zone and be hopeful.
If I can, you too can. |
