People will fall out from time to time, thats what makes us human. What is important above all else is that we Igbos get our own separate country out of this unworkable disaster called Nigeria. Stuff like this do happen. Regrettable as it's, I hope the rank and file will not be demoralized! I also think that those in the leadership position should learn to compromise and bind together to guarantee a common front. Lots of people are dying as a result of federal Nigerias scotched earth policy against our people! Balkanization of the major agitating group at this critical juncture will prove counterproductive! Folks should learn to stomach thier pride. And this Buhari is dead rhetorics should be reduced. It's not gaining much traction with the public. grandlexuz: Those are a very valid points you raised. However I think in a struggling economy and country like Nigeria where millions of people still go to bed hungry, people die from preventable and treatable illneses like malaria, cholera etc, the production of local cars is hardly its top priority.
With Nigeria's number one commodity in free fall, avenues to raise cash becomes a priority. If you ask me if bringing down custom duties is directly proportional to more funds for the cash starved government then it is a win win situation for both the citizens and the government.
Mind you even China with all its technological might and wealth still depends on the importation of cars. In 2019 only two local brands featured in top ten sales. Volkswagen leads the sales with importation of cars making 63% of car sales in China It's ok. Though most of the foreign cars sold in China are assembled locally.. As per more money for the government? Lol. Add another thrillion naira in their revenue, it will disappear through estacodes, inflated contracts and jumbo allowances for political office holders. They will still complain of lack of funds to run the government. I do understand your perspective tho.. |

Car Talk › Re: FG To Slash Levy On Imported Cars To 5% From 35% by Rugaria: 2:44pm On Nov 22, 2020 |
grandlexuz: I think you are over hyping the locally made car industry in Nigeria. A slash in custom duties will stop the influx of smuggled second hand cars across porous borders by promoting direct importation from which the government can earn custom duties albeit now on the low end.
The car manufacturing industry is capital intensive with the need for a viable market. What percentage of the Nigerian population can afford a brand new car priced in the thousands of dollars when the minimum wage is lower than the price of a tyre.
As much as I accept the should be incentives in place to promote local car productions it takes much more than the custom duty placed on second handed cars to woo buyers for Innoson and other local brands. Even at 85 % custom rate most Nigerians will rather import a used Mercedes to buying a brand new Innoson; even if expenses incured on the Mecedes were higher. I totally agree with you. But in terms of biulding a country, biulding her economy, her technological know-how, her industries, especially now that a sizeable number of companies are already mastering this technology, it's obvious that this policy is not positively sustainable. Where do we go from here? How do we ensure that folks drive quality cars while enhancing local abilities in the automobile industry? Have a bank that can calibrate a people friendly product which can be accessed by say, tax paying citizens? More massive investments in this area to reduce quantity of imported raw materials thereby making the final products fabricated locally to be cheaper? Dedicated funds by the government to subsidize such purchases, depending on the ability of the beneficiaries to pay up in installments? Or do we just go on with imports since they're readily available and relatively cheaper? |

OneTemplate: She is right and you are an ethnocentric Igbo bigot unable to see the big picture and only interested in what benefits Igbo individual rather than what is in the interest of millions of Nigerians in the biggest black nation on Earth.
Nigeria must take drastic steps to secure locally innovated and home-driven economic growth post covid socio-economic devastation because all other nations of the world will be too busy trying to spark their own economy to life to even be interested in helping us.
Put your bigotry aside for a second if you can. Innoson should respond and slash price to compete or get out of the way. Any truthful Nigerian businessman will tell you it is criminal for bulk head articulated lorries to continue charging in excess of 400k to transport goods from Lagos to even Minna simply because owners of these lorries paid huge duties to import them and accordingly need to recoup their capital outlay.
Crash the price and watch competition fashion a truly competitive transport and haulage sector that will help many businesses grow and thus aid the economic progress of Nigeria. Haulage costs are high because of bad roads, high cost of pms and the unbelievable delays at the ports! Has little to do with the cost of importing bulk head which can be defraid with just 5 to 6 business trips from say Lagos to Onitsha! It cost over a million naira to transport a container from Lagos to the east! It was lower by more than half to do so about 6 years ago with the same duty quotation on bulk heads! So What changed? Naira depreciation, fuel hikes, rising cost of other services related to the haulage business and of course bad roads! Not that I'm praying for bad results but may God keep us alive, if there are no significant changes on these areas, I will be here to remind folks like you on how you turned Nigeria into a dumping ground for used vehicles while not really making any dent on costs of transportation! This policy is mainly targeted at family cars like sedan and SUVs. How many bulk heads are imported on daily basis and if there is an urgent need to reduce the charges on bulk heads, can't that be done without a blanket policy that destroys local ability to manufacture other brands of vehicle? You rant and rail about those posting with tribal motives, yet you haven't been able to explain to us why you support total ban on the importation of rice while not supporting any sort of ban on cars! Similarly Britain didn't want to be dependent on Africa for cocoa and they discovered it grows in Asia and started doing business there....
And is "our oil" really ours? Since the white man left has the oil money ever reached you? Let's think! We are saying different things! You are talking about buying and selling, and I'm talking about wayward imperialism.. As per buying and selling of oil, We also sell to India and China. Those countries get their stakes in Nigerias oil industry by "competing" to win bids. Britain and co imposed Buhari and has been supporting all types of brutal leaders amenable to their interests here. Getting all sorts of kickbacks from the back door as a result. To be fair to Nigeria, Ojukwu opposed the Union which triggered a civil war but it was still Nigerians that fought against the break up of the Union that Luggard created. This makes any further blame of Luggard invalid. Let's think critically please. Import bans on rice makes an essential, very costly, while reduced charges on car imports, makes a not so essential product cheaper... The problem with you guys is that you all start off by projecting your rabid tribalism on others. The only good thing in this policy is that Abuja politicians will have more money to spend. SavageMaster: I heard Innoson is expanding to some African countries. I hope it works out for him so it will cushion the effect of this new government decision. Really troubling times. Best bet will be to quicken the process of manufacturing most of his raw materials locally. That will be capital intensive tho. Maybe alligning with the Chinese suppliers to set up shops locally.. In better managed environments, government would have helped to prop-up factories to help the supply chain. But this government is more interested in tax and spend. It's very easy to revert to policies like this to jack up revenue in the short term, but domesticating sundry technologies related to the car manufacturing business will ultimately grow the economy/Nigerias industrial base in the long run. There is also the problem of costant change of policies. Most of the big brands trying to open up assembly plants in Nigeria may not go on with the plan. Obviously, tokumbo cars will be cheaper.. |

That will bring more revenue to Nigerias government because it will kill the car importation business through cotonou. But at the same time, it may mark the end of our growing automobile industry. The likes of innoson should worry. Government has chosen more money over greater technology transfers here. Obviously, the government is really cash strapped. Benin republic rakes in billions from Nigerians through the many cars going towards Nigeria that are cleared at her ports every year. It may also improve the quality and models of cars driven in Nigeria. You will be surprised that in relative terms, folks in cotonou drive more recent models of cars than Nigerians. Nigerians have to drive older models because importers pay lesser duties on those, thereby standing a better chance of making more profits... Problem is that the accrued revenue will ultimately disappear into private hands or end up being used to biuld up Niger republic.. |
