Wonder why people are getting all worked up about Florentino Perez's Madrid. . . . . Last season, Barca had the mega-team; the ultimate attacking machine. . . . . Madrid are only trying to replicate that! Before you criticize Madrid, do same to Barca. . . . . . |
dayokanu:3 of the top 4 EPL teams made it to the final rounds of the UCL, they all even amassed more points than Bayern or even Wolfsburg your champs. Its not only the # of UCL games that you win that counts. As for Bremen, head to head with Hamburg in the cup competitions both were involved, they might shade it a little; but the deficit comes in the league where there were miles behind hamburg. . . . . based on this who do you think would have more points ![]() |

dayokanu:To get to the world cup you have to win matches abi to win the cup, more points abi ![]() For the season in review, Hamburg certainly would'a chalked up more points than Bayern or Bremen. . . . . they got to the semi-finals of the UEFA cup and DVB-Pokal or whatever y'all call it out there in deuschland and were fifth position in your ligue - all the way to the last day, they had a chance of even being German Champs. Bremen - fine cup runs but tenth ![]() Bayern - surely you're not expecting them to be in the top 10 ; just compare their season to that of Hamburg and even Bremen!?The standings are a fair reflection of how the season's been - no questioning that UTD and Barca were the dominant teams. My only grouse would be Arsenal being so high up - but we already know that some ligues get a higher point award than others - don't we ![]() |
LIVERPOOL'S AUDITORS ISSUE WARNING – 6/6/09 Liverpool's auditors have issued a warning about the club's ability to meet soaring interest payments. The club's latest accounts revealed that Liverpool paid £36.5m in interest on their debts in the financial year ending 31 July 2008. Auditors KPMG warned of a 'material uncertainty which may cast significant doubt upon the group's ability to continue as a going concern.' It is realised inside the club that not enough money is being generated to cover the interest payments of Kop Football (Holdings) Ltd., the club's holding company. This is in spite of the announcement of a record turnover of £159.1m and a pre-tax profit of £30.2m. Even so, the club's net debt - not including that of the holding company - almost doubled from £43.9m to £86m. Kop Football (Holdings) Ltd. made a pre-tax loss of £40.9m, with its net debt rising to £299.5m. It has not helped that the club's American owners made a poor call on the direction of interest rates, entering into fixed agreements between 4.3 per cent and 6 per cent as the Bank of England cut its rate to a record low of 0.5 per cent. The cost of exiting these hedging agreements would total £30.6m, prompting KPMG to describe them as 'potentially onerous contracts'. The accountants' warnings come as Tom Hicks and George Gillett Jr. continue to look for outside investment and, in the more immediate future, to renegotiate their existing £350m loan. The Americans have until July 24 to refinance their credit deals with Royal Bank of Scotland and Wachovia. They are hopeful of securing at least a six month extension which would give them breathing space. Liverpool sources have trying to play down the KPMG comments, dismissing them as 'unduly alarmist' or seeking to explain them away as a standard statement when a company is negotiating a refinancing package. Nevertheless, the implications could be serious. Uefa, which runs the Champions League, demands that clubs provide detailed financial forecasts before it will issue them with a licence to compete in its competition. Hicks and Gillet are under growing pressure to sell the club, having failed to raise the finance to build a new stadium, which is vital to their plan for long-term growth. |
Sunderland are the latest American-owned club in the Premiership after Irish-American businessman Ellis Short acquired the club. Short, who is the billionaire president of Lone Star Funds, now lives in this country. Short said, 'Sunderland is a very big club with a lot of fans, a big stadium, and a lot of revenue - and where you are in the position we are, where you are trying to improve things, it takes money.' Sunderland's battle against relegation this year was consistent with its reputation as a yo-yo club. However, Short has said that he does not want to ever go through a relegation battle again and is aiming at a top ten finish next season. He commented, 'It's a very well-run club, the scouting organisation, and the youth development programme are in place, so it's got all the pieces in place to be a long-term successful, powerful club.' |
They may not be the most glamorous club in the Premiership, but Portsmouth now have a glamorous owner with deep enough pockets to help them achieve their ambitions. Dr Sulaiman al-Fahim is the UAE's Sir Alan Sugar, starring in an Arab version of The Apprentice television show. He has struck a provisional deal to buy the club for an undisclosed sum from its Franco-Russian owner, Alexandre Gaydamak who acquired Pompey for £30m from Milan Mandaric, now owner of Leicester, in 2006. Mr Fahim also brokered the purchase of Manchester City for Abu Dhabi's royal family, but is no longer involved with the club, clearing the way for his involvement with Portsmouth. The sale price remains unknown. However, Deloitte have estimated that Premier League clubs have typically been sold at an enterprise value of 1.5 to two times annual revenue. On this multiple range, Portsmouth, with a turnover of £70.5m for the year to 2008, would be worth between £105.7m and £141m. But the credit crunch has depressed valuations of Premiership teams and Portsmouth's debts, of £57m last May, would also weigh on its equity value. Mr Al-Fahim was reported to have inquired about buying Chelsea from Roman Abramovich in January as part of a consortium to have bid more than £700m. He should be able to wipe out Portsmouth's debts and proceed with redeveloping Fratton Park now that the plan for a new ground has been mothballed. |
Rubbish. . . . . . . a far better team would'a torn those stupid Eagles apart. that scoreline just flatters the hell out of their lame performance. The midfiled was totally non-existent - way too much gap btw the defense and midfield; it was almost too easy for the Kenyans. And that other Uche guy - #16 - wetin im tink sey im be sef Pass ball e go d'ey hol am until d'em go comot am 4 im leg - abi im wan b JJ ![]() Not a very good performance I must say! |
Not hating on FED. . . . . . but i have always said that it'd be a touch difficult for him to surpass Sampras' record - the game is getting stronger and there much better players now + since Djokovic registered a series of wins against FED was it one or two yrs ago, the psyche of a lot of players seemed to have changed certainly not like Robin's display from the days when FED just over-run em easily. |
Note that I've tried to put out both sides of the argument - what I am trying to point out however, is that MUFC is in no great danger of crumbling becuz of the debts. . . . . while not saying that if the debt payload does hit in hard in the long run it will not affect certain aspects of MUFC's operations, we should take into cognisance the fact that it will take quite a lot to adversely affect MUFC. |
an excerpt from Man Utd Supporters Trust - M.U.S.T. response to Manchester United Financial Results So where is the debt? If the Glazers have taken the debt back into the books of their own company Red Football, *which they have* then this is good news for MU supporters in that the debt becomes the direct liability of the Glazers’ company and is not hanging over the club, weighing its finances down – the effects of this can be seen from the results. The reason for doing this is not clear – it may be for tax reasons, but more likely is the explanation that the Glazers wanted to clear the debt from MUL in preparation for a securitisation of United’s matchday and stadium revenues, and banks would look askance at adding a potential £400m bond liability to a company which already had up to £700m of existing debt. Of course the securitisation plan was put on hold last year because of the credit crunch and the resulting inability to do a deal on attractive terms. It also needs to be said that even though the debt seems no longer to a liability of the club, the Glazers will have had to pledge their shares in MUL to the banks providing the debt finance to Red Football, so any failure to repay that debt could result in the banks taking ownership and control of United through the shares. There is still a debt risk hanging over the club, but it is certainly less dangerous than before. So where is the profit going? What is clear is that the increase in net profits from not having to service the debt will result in a large dividend (up to £40m cash) which is payable to the owners, and which they can use to service the £660m*figure from early 2008* debt which is now in Red Football. The question is – will there be enough to both service the debt and make enough cash available to strengthen the squad if Sir Alex needs to*this seems to be the only dicey issue thus far*? The credit crunch has made the debt more expensive than ever. |
