Djcn:@ Djcn, HSDPA, Wimax and other wireless technologies are the way to go currently in the Nigerian environment especially when you want to bring your services to a wider consumer market. DSL, Cable and Fibre-optics are technologies that will take a long time, money and equipment to implement in the harsh Nigerian environment without basic infrastructure to support these technologies. That's why these technologies when implemented, their services are so expensive. Imagine paying N12,000 for a 512/256 kbps connection. Yes, its unlimited but many people cannot afford this especially when it doesn't suit their browsing pattern. I don't know where you guys got the figure of 3.6 Mbps as the maximum bandwidth for MTN. Just because MTN sells modems with a MAX connection speed of 3.6 Mbps doesn't mean other modems with larger bandwidth would not show an improvement. Many people with MTN's Huawei E156G modems cannot pass the 400KB/S mark. 4llerbuntu:@ 4llerbuntu, My brother this your assumption na wa o ! How you take calculate am ? Abi, you also have glo broadaccess. I understand where you are coming from about the QoS and Bandwidth (Dedicated & Shared). However, let us call a spade a spade. I don't see anything advanced or superior about the glo ADSL broad access with the current package tomcat has of 512/256 kbps at N12000 a month. It's only advantage which i concede is that's its ADSL. Therefore, it has certain unique advantages. But those advantages are moot if they don't have a significant impact on the browsing experience of the consumer. |
Hello, ![]()
|
Hi, Am also interested in getting the MTN Hynet service. It is based on Wimax technology and therefore you must be within coverage area. |
lumzi23:To further break it down, 512 is your downlink speed and 256 is your upload speed. However since the speeds are in kilobits - 512/256 kbps, i have converted them to kilobytes. This gave me a downlink speed of 64 kilobytes and 32 kilobytes uplink respectively which is poor in my opinion considering the amount you are paying per month. I have an HSPA modem with a connection speed of 7.5 Mbps. That's mega bits per second. when converted to kilobytes, i get 937.5 Kilobytes per second. I can confirm and you can check the internet screenshots thread but i have reached upto speeds of 1.02MB (Megabyte) using IDM (Internet Download Manager) on MTN 3.5G network. My normal average speed is above 350 Kilobytes per second. My only problem is the latency issue (300ms & above) and network stability (it sometimes disconnects or hangs). @tomcat Could you please post a screenshot of your speed using speedtest and IDM ? Will really appreciate it. |
Glo launches 4G-LTE network By Prince Osuagwu LAGOS — Second National Telecommunications Operator, Globacom, has launched the fourth generation mobile technology, 4G-LTE network, in Nigeria. Long Term Evolution LTE is a revolutionary mobile technology which enhances the data transfer rates delivering faster mobile broadband experience and highest data speeds and reliability. LTE is an advancement in technology to the 3.5G and High Speed Packet Access, HSPA. It provides ubiquitous services for users on the GSM technology curve and also others on CDMA and WiMAX platforms and is touted to offer the path breaking 4G experience for consumers. This is due to its ability to deliver very fast data speeds in excess of 100Mb/s uplink and 50Mb/s downlink. Group Chief Operating Officer of Globacom, Mr. Mohamed Jameel who unveiled the technology to newsmen in Lagos, at the Mike Adenuga Towers, headquarters of Globacom on Victoria Island, Lagos, said though people could already browse the Internet or send e-mails using HSPA-enabled systems or send and receive video, music using G-phones, the experience with LTE will be even better. He added that the technology would further enhance more demanding applications like interactive TV, mobile video blogging, advanced games or professional services, enabling more Nigerians to be on top of their game and thereby ruling their world”, he added. Meanwhile, Jameel noted that Globacom has already deployed the services on over 100 sites in Lagos alone, adding that “for our subscribers, LTE offers the key benefits of performance and capacity”. There are over 24 networks in the world which have already adapted and launched 4G-LTE networks across the world and Globacom is expected to plug on the ubiquity of this technology to connect the demanding corporate customers and high data users from the latest 4G-LTE wireless broadband to Glo 1 and perhaps the rest of the world. Jameel, however confessed that the company was being proactive in meeting the mobile broadband need of its growing subscriber base, bearing in mind that as the data dependence and applications grow, the need to deliver higher speeds on wireless would also continue to grow. He disclosed that by 2012, an estimated 1.8 billion people worldwide will have access to broadband services and that nearly two-thirds of this number will be mobile broadband consumers who will be served by LTE networks. For him, “Globacom is committed to bringing all such latest and best technologies available in the world to Nigeria”. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2011/01/glo-launches-4g-lte-network/ See what these "clowns" are up to. ![]() |
@ tomcat, Have gone through glo's website and couldn't find their contact number for broad access. Could you please post it here. I need to make some serious inquiries. For residential, whats the maximum bandwidth you can get and how much do you pay for your own broad access service per month ? Thanks so much. |
tomcat:Thanks tomcat So, N20,000 installation fee. I can confirm glo 3G+ is available in Maitama, Abuja but don't know if broad access is available. Are you currently using the service ? Is it residential or for office use ? |
Happy New Year, Guys ![]() |
Djcn:@ Djcn, How we go do, my brother ? They are the only ones we can compare to in the entire Nigeria. The other CDMA operators are having a tough time with Multilinks about to be sold. There's a saying, "What the eyes cannot see, the mouth does not get hungry for it ". Check out the responses of people on the speeds posted on this thread: https://www.nairaland.com/nigeria/topic-581307.0.html Now, when these same people start getting true broadband speeds of 5,10, 15megabits upwards they will be wondering how they survived with the crappy speeds they where getting before. I still remember NITEL dial up when you had to wait for the modem to finish dialing and log you in. @ Djcn If you look at the Hotspot statistics i have posted and the place they are deploying their service, am sure they are going to improve on the QoS. Even if its just a marketing strategy, they are atleast on ground and people are "feeling" them and can identify with the company unlike glo-1 that remains faceless uptill now. tomcat:Welcome Back tomcat ,Please could you mention 1. some of the areas in lagos you know or are aware that glo broadaccess is available 2. If you are connected on one, please could you shed some light on the installment process and payment plans. The information on glo's website is not as helpful as i would have liked. Thanks.

Facebook shut down hoax spreads like fire Internet faux news site Weekly World News posted an outrageous story that Facebook will be shut down on March 15th 2011, due to the stress it has put Founder Mark Zuckerberg through. Normally this type of news would not even be worth our time and effort, but an unfortunate situation occurred where thousands of viewers actually believed the story and shared it on Facebook. Over the past hour, 40 of my 320+ friends shared this story, and I’ve received a couple messages and emails about it from “worried” fans. I expect that the situation will get worse, sparking more controversy over the Internet. Here is a snippet from the article: PALO ALTO, CA –Mark Zuckerberg announced that Facebook will be shut down in March. Managing the site has become too stressful. “Facebook has gotten out of control,” said Zuckerberg in a press conference outside his Palo Alto office, “and the stress of managing this company has ruined my life. I need to put an end to all the madness.” Zuckerberg went on to explain that starting March 15th, users will no longer be able to access their Facebook accounts. “After March 15th the whole website shuts down,” said Avrat Humarthi, Vice President of Technical Affairs at Facebook. “So if you ever want to see your pictures again, I recommend you take them off the internet. You won’t be able to get them back once Facebook goes out of business.” So just to confirm, this is a fake story by a faux news site, similar to that of The Onion and Chive. As a reminder, always fact check before passing on stories, or else what happened today will keep happening over and over (like this trend will ever stop anyway)… oh yea, use some common sense. Also, with a company estimated at being worth over $50 billion, why would anyone even think of suddenly shutting it down. As a friend said, it would obviously make sense to sell it off rather than just kill it all together. http://www.blogtechnical.com/286/facebook-shut-down-hoax-spreads-like-fire.bt |

Let me start by apologizing to the OP for the wrong information i posted here. I made an honest mistake by mixing up 2 Samsung Galaxy Tab devices. One sold by Etisalat and another bought in the US. After carefully reading your posts and observing the 2 devices, i realized the mistake was mine. Please accept my apologies. I never claim to be a mr-know-it all and will acknowledge my mistakes. Am here to learn as always from more learned colleagues. @ Niggy, Your observation is correct. Thank you for pointing out my mistake. @ Ex Inferis Haba, Babban Yaya ? Ka share mu in this section. Your posts as always hit the nail on the head. However, the other Samsung Galaxy Tab i was talking about earlier (the one bought in the US) has a Micro-Sim slot. It also came unlocked. Any ideas ? |
puskin:Am interested in knowing your guys for Abuja that have been posting 600KB/S screenies here !! |
oloriooko:Generally, most tablet computers come with sim card slots which means you can put sim cards from different GSM operators. The Samsung Galaxy Tab offered for sale by Etisalat is sold unlocked and can be used by any GSM operator in Nigeria. However, you need to use a Micro-Sim. MTN currently offers Micro-sims for sale (Apple Ipad & Iphone 4 use miro-sims) but you can use a Micro-sim cutter to use a different networks sim. I can confirm this because i personally bought one for a friend at their Abuja office (Wuse II). CDMA operators (Starcomms, Multilinks, Visafone) however, are not supported. Niggy:I would disagree with you on the above statement. Samsung Galaxy Tab sold by Etisalat is unlocked. The device runs on Android 2.2 OS. There is no need for any flashing, jailbreaking or unlocking like the Apple Ipad. What Etisalat does is provide you with a special sim that has all the value added services (Free SMS, Data Allowance etc) on it. Without the special sim card, you would not enjoy the value added services of the galaxy tab on the etisalat network even if you use a data or normal etisalat sim. |

Yeah 3x - Chris Brown |
Not really, its a factor to be considered but as i said earlier, there are other more important components involved. I don't want us to delve too much into network design but if you are familiar with how Mobile networks deploy their infrastructure (Base Stations in particular), you will see what i mean. You cannot tell me that if you are in Lagos, you can never get this kinds of speeds. What's so bad in Lagos that automatically makes everything slower ? |
tunnex190:Not really, ![]() The last time i downloaded something less than 500KB/S e don tey ![]() No be lie i swear ![]() That's why i usually download ALL my stuff from Rapidshare (Music, Movies, Games etc) |
luffyhaki:@luffyhaki Am in Abuja currently and am getting this speed. Even though i know that Abuja is not up to Lagos in terms of size but there are several factors to be considered when observing internet speed. |
