Greetings My People !!! So, part of the journey in the solar ministry is the constant search for knowledge and self development. Renewable energy is growing in leaps and bounds and the African market is the next frontier to make it big in terms of investment and scale. A good opportunity to learn and network with other professionals in the industry is by attending exhibitions, summits, forums. Such an event is happening soon in Lagos with details below: NIGERIAN ENERGY CONFERENCE AND EXHIBITION 2022 (FORMERLY KNOWN AS POWER NIGERIA) Date: 20 - 22 September 2022 Venue: Landmark Event Center, Lagos Attendance: Free https://www.nigeria-energy.com/en/home.html For those based in Lagos, this is a good opportunity to learn more about the renewable energy industry and network with professionals and products. Who knows we might even have a FTA Solar Nairaland gathering at the event ? Anybody interested ? Registatration and attendance is free. Cheers.

Great Start on the solar journey. . Yes, its a non-hybrid which means you need a separate charge controller to use solar panels.Your budget will determine a lot of the accessories you will need to purchase as addons to the inverter. Here are my own guides: 1. Solar Panels For solar panels, my budget brand to recommend is Yingli Solar Panels. The 380W panel is going for about N90K as of my last inquiries. You can go for those other cheap alaba solar panels if you want something cheaper but you won't get the rated capacity and quality. Four panels should be okay to charge your batteries quickly with 1520W of power. 2. Solar Charge Controller Of course MPPT is the best way to go and the MakeSkyBlue and Powmr charge controllers are our budget options to recommend. If your budget is higher you can use Epever. A 50amp charge controller should be just fine. 3. Batteries I personally prefer AGM batteries like Monbat or Amaron Quanta for Lead Acid as my budget brands. But to be a bit more easy on the wallet you can go for tubular brands like Index, Rita, Eastman etc. Since you have a 24v inverter and most batteries are 12v in series, it means you need to buy minimum of 2 batteries 12v for the inverter. Please take the above with a huge pinch of salt as without knowing your budget, one cannot accurately recommend the right products for you. I hope this helps you out in your own research. Cheers. |
TechGeek777:Apologies but Epever doesn't seem to have an official store on AliExpress. However, you can check out the Powmr Official Store i posted and amongst the products on sale in that store you will see Epever charge controllers from the same vendor. If your interested in Fangpusun Charge Controllers, Inverters kindly check out their official store also: 1. Wenzhou Xihe Electric Co., Ltd. (Fangpusun) https://www.aliexpress.com/store/535617?spm=a2g0o.productlist.0.0.41d87223hKBIUT Fangpusun products are chinese clones of reputable brands like Victron, Studer & Outback but they give decent performance for the price range more than some unnamed chinese brands. Their firmware maybe out of date compared to the original which affects performance. |
ojeysky:The internet is rife with comments and reviews by users on their experience with the Powmr. It's a mixed bag. Which is why "in my opinion" i recommended the MakeSkyBlue. If you read my earlier posts, i made several caveats about them being the same thing but preferring MakeSkyBlue for better build, updated firmware, nameplate capacity at a slightly higher price. Being cheap has its own pitfalls. Ultimately the choice is his. |
TechGeek777:Get the MakeskyBlue MPPT Solar Charge Controller. That's the most basic. If your budget is a little more rich, you can upgrade to Epever. Another Budget brand you search up on AliExpress, Konga or Jumia. But beware of these Chinese clones. Your performance & quality may vary. MPPT Charge controllers are like the gearbox of a car. No matter how powerful an engine is, it needs a transmission to get that power on the road so therefore in my opinion one should be try to get a decent brand to get the much needed power to recharge your batteries. |
saint2ace:Thanks Boss for this. I also highly recommend the use of ferrules for your connections if possible for maximum contact and reduced risk of partial contact. I have attached some pics showing how the ferrules look like. Any scenarios where you need to connect small gauge wires then try to use a ferrule. If you can add a heat shrink wrap to the connection even better for safety. ![]()

durodee:Nice Review ![]() This is a basic solar charge controller that's affordable for budget conscious people. However, you get what you pay for as it doesn't have some of the more advance features that others have. But most importantly is that you don't get the nameplate readings you see compared to using an actual clamp meter to test the real world readings. Here are links to their official stores: 1. Powmr Official Store https://ysmart.aliexpress.com/store/609653?spm=a2g0o.productlist.0.0.533e5d4fFeAwCE 2. MakeSkyBlue Official Store https://makeskyblue.aliexpress.com/store/1759821?spm=a2g0o.productlist.0.0.1d6e1d21dvPKn2 You can order both from AliExpress direct or any major reseller but be guided that these are chinese clones. I am however more partial to MakeSkyBlue No. 2 compared to Powmr No. 1. They have better documentation and their products are of a more higher quality. But they are both basically the same thing. As stated, they are cheap but your performance mileage may vary. |
NiyiOmoIyunade:Continuing with the 12v Battery system and in the spirit of the recent discourse on the advantages of LifeP04, see some simple videos below that can help beginners with simple requirements to really enjoy a 12v battery system to power their basic appliances at a budget price. 1. 12v Battery Pack by Wiil Prowse https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vTFLuKjvUQw https://youtu.be/i4oJYhGKw1s 2. 12v Battery Pack by High Tech Lab https://youtu.be/TSRHDJhoQj0 3. 12v Battery Pack by Lithium Solar https://youtu.be/3889lj2whLA I hope these educational videos will help any budding new entrants into solar via team lithium. Cheers. |
FEGEITOK:And creates a big hole in the pocket also ![]() But quality comes at a price and your assured of high performance. ![]() |
TechGeek777:Most batteries recommend a maximum charging current under normal operation should be limited to 25% of the rated capacity of the battery at the C20 rate (for an 100 Ah battery @ 20 Hr rate, the maximum charging current should be 25A). This means that for 200 Ah Battery that means 50A. But please check your batteries manual for its specific charging current. |
FEGEITOK:You can always use a step up/down converter for 120/240v with it. The various charging profile it has and its price point is what attracts me to it. Not an Engineer but a keen solar enthusiast with a passion for knowledge. |
NiyiOmoIyunade:I strongly support this point by Oga Niyi. Though, it might be a bit expensive at the beginning especially with the ongoing transition to Lithium, a good 12v AGM/Gel/Flooded charger is essential for the general maintenance of your batteries. It's highly recommended (especially buying brand new) for those who are about to install a new inverter and batteries to charge their full before installation. Some batteries come in a low state of charge and a good charge by the 12v charger to the batteries specs and allowing it to float for 24hrs before connecting is a good practice that will save you anguish in the future. 1. But this now leads me into a category for those interested in purchasing an all in one plug and play LifeP04 battery system that you can just plug and forget. While some of my senior ogas in the house (@bigbrovar & co) prefer the DIY route of buying the cells, bottom/top balancing them, adding BMS and wiring it up together, creating a compartment to place the entire setup etc where they have control and can tweak the setup, some of us are not so technically minded and prefer a system that comes ready made. Enter Server Rack LifeP04 batteries. These are battery systems that come pre-configured with cells, BMS, etc and you just plug it to your inverter. Some even come with CAN bus communication for tighter integration. Some examples include: 1. SOK Batteries 48v 100ah https://www.currentconnected.com/ 8 Volt (51.2 Nominal) 100Ah, 5.12 kWh 20 Year Typical Lifespan & 10 Year Warranty Cells rated for 80% Capacity after 4000 Cycles, 100% DOD @1C Rate Typical capacity at 80% DOD @.5C Rate is over 7000 Cycles Maintenance Free Built-In Smart Battery Management System (BMS) 5 Temperature sensors, protected from low and high temperatures Pre-Charge Circuit to Prevent BMS Damage Detachable cover, user serviceable BMS and cells RS485 & CANBus communication, works with many inverters. If you have a residential home and want to have peace of mind as regards batteries and want to try out the LifeP04 life, then i recommend you check out these alternative products. There is a premium segment of course looking at the https://bydbatterybox.com/ and https://en.pylontech.com.cn/ for those who are blessed in the spirit (@Niyi and co.) . Be informed and spend your money wisely.

Hello My People. The rate at which you people are giving Egbon Niyi WotoWoto left and right no be here o. Allow my guy rest nau ![]() That was on a lighter note. So, as is the tradition in this thread after a few active posts and rigorous discourse, the marketers come in and spam the thread for a few more pages and justcallmenuel has been on a roll lately with his products. Interestingly however, what caught my eye and this is something i had talked about before was the range of lithium battery system by Felicity Solar. For those who want a residential solar setup (4 batteries (48v) and above) and looking to go Lithium (cheaply), it is not a bad start. The advantages of lithium over lead at scale will save you more in the long run with a quality of life without worries. An all in one, plug and play lithium battery system is ideal where you don't need to be worrying constantly and checking your batteries all the time. But please be cautioned that Felicity Solar products have been talked about here extensively about their durability, not being at full capacity despite the stated nameplate or using grade B batteries in their products. Their Google Reviews is also terrible as posted by previous buyers. But they do have an office you can go to for warranty issues and repairs so buy at your own risk.1. TechGeek777:These are all solar equipment sellers with a good online presence. You can also add https://www.solardepotng.com/ to that list. But i have personally never had any dealings with them. And some of them have had issues that had been reported here already on this platform. Therefore, you transact at your own risks. In my previous posts, the resellers i posted were authorized dealers who have signed agreements with the global brands to be their representatives in Nigeria so they carry a bit more weight in my opinion. Also, i highly advise you visit a sellers office and check out availability and price of their products. A lot of these sellers don't update their websites and contact numbers to reflect realities. Therefore, go to there office and deal face to face is my honest opinion. Warranty and fault repairs should also be discussed extensively before purchase to avoid issues later on. |

NiyiOmoIyunade:Okay. I understand where your coming from. Information Asymmetry as you earlier stated. However, as a fellow enthusiast and considering the Nigerian environment we live in, i felt it a public service to release such information. As you said, i have no skin in the game and i believe the market is big enough to accommodate everybody. More information means more sales in my opinion as buyers are more informed. Getting ripped off and supplied low quality equipment has been a recurring issue plaguing the adoption of solar in this country and it shouldn't be so. My extensive research on solar has been for over 5yrs now and so felt a need to share and help out to point people in the right direction. |
For Team LifeP04 who are interested in purchasing either individually or in a group buy for Lithium Ion Phosphate (Prismatic) batteries, here is a list of reputable suppliers on Ali Baba who can supply you original batteries for your next solar setup. This is list based on recommendations from the DIY Solar Forums https://diysolarforum.com/ with reviews by people all over the world who have purchased their batteries including the Youtuber Will Prowse. Another Youtuber Andy from the Off-Grid Garage has also bought from such suppliers. Some of the suppliers listed can ship directly to Nigeria DDP (Direct Duty Paid) via ocean shipping to a warehouse in Lagos where you can go and pick up or via freight forwarder who will ship on your behalf. Be prepared for long wait though of over 90 days in some cases before your shipment arrives. 1. Shenzen Luyuan Technology Ltd https://szluyuan.en.alibaba.com/?spm=a2700.9114905.0.0.BLMWsZ My top rated supplier. Why ? Because they match and batch the batteries by internal resistance and use Grade A LifeP04 EVE Cells directly from EVE. This comes at a premium however but you are guaranteed that your batteries are the cream of the top of cells. They test and ship the batteries DDP to Nigeria to warehouses in Lagos and Kano. Chat Amy Wan to get a quote. 2. Docan Technology (shenzhen) Co., Ltd https://docantech.en.alibaba.com/?spm=a2700.9114905.0.0.BLMWsZ Another top rated supplier of LifeP04 cells. They do not have a freight forwarder to Nigeria though but you can make your own arrangements for shipping or they can recommend one for you for shipping to a lagos warehouse. Contact Sandy Zou to get a quote. 3. Shenzhen Basen Technology Co., Ltd https://basen.en.alibaba.com/?spm=a2700.9114905.0.0.BLMWsZ Premium LifeP04 cells available at affordable prices direct from an original supplier. Contact Ms. Amy Peng for a quote. 5. Shenzen Deriy New Energy Technology Ltd https://dery.en.alibaba.com/?spm=a2700.9114905.0.0.BLMWsZ A newer supplier on the LifeP04 block but with good prices and availability. I believe some Nairalanders have had business with them before so will appreciate any reviews they may have. Contact Ms. Selina Li for a quote. So, there you have it Team LifeP04. All these suppliers listed above are on AliBaba with reviews and ratings. Kindly fully register on AliBaba with your address and ID if you intend to do a purchase. Multiple payment channels are provided so pick your choice. All types of LifeP04 cells are available from 105ah, 160ah, 280ah(LF280k), 304ah. All suppliers specify Grade A cells but i can only personally confirm for Shenzen Luyuan. Contact them and start the conversation. Cheers. Dropping some charge controllers and inverters next. |

Trojan Batteries Eauxwell Nigeria Ltd 81B Oduduwa Crescent, Ikeja GRA, Lagos 07039481061 07039481062 http://www.eauxwell.com/ Looking to buy the Rolls Royce of Lead Acid Batteries, then look no further as their authorized dealer dey for your backyard. Go to their office or give them a call to confirm prices and availability. That's all for Team Lead Acid for now. I mainly provided AGM/VRLA batteries because for me they are more maintenance free and convenient than gel/flooded. Most of the chinese lead acid batteries flooding the market now are knock offs and will not last long. Better to "enhance" your budget and get named brands. If these batteries are out of your budget and your looking for gel/flooded batteries, you can try out the Simba/Luminous range of products https://www.thesimbaden.com/ or EastMann range of products also https://eastmannigeria.com/. Both have offices on their websites where you can check out their products and get a warranty. Team LifeP04, we are up next. |
NiyiOmoIyunade:Noted Oga Niyi. ![]() Though the brands i have listed maybe a bit on the premium side, permit me to align with @zeestone99 earlier statement that quality solar products don't come cheap. However, in my experience what pains customers the most is paying for budget products that don't last and in the long run end up costing the customer more money to replace. A penny wise pound foolish situation. You see large installations costing over N1M using budget chinko products that the owners end up regretting. To avoid stories that touch, they have an opportunity to contact authorised resellers of quality products and manage their budgets accordingly. I will however take your advice and drop links to some good quality chinese products that offer more value to our budget diy solar community. LifeP04 people on my radar next. |
Hello House, I have been seeing a lot of requests for advice on brands of solar equipment to buy ranging from inverters, charge controllers, batteries to SPD, MCB etc. Permit me to share a few resources I have discovered in my extensive research in the solar ministry. Opistorincos:This might be out of your budget but you can use it to guide your purchase. Yingli Solar panels are one of the most affordable quality solar panel brands that you can buy. Their 450W panel is going for around N90,000 or higher. I personally don't like tubular batteries due to their electrolyte. I will rather do AGM VRLA Lead Acid battery. Amaron Quanta is a good brand going for around N165,000 last time i checked. For inverter, better to do a hybrid inverter that has solar mppt built in. I just bought SRNE 3KVA/24V inverter for N175,000 for a friend from their dealer in Lagos. So, you can adjust your requirements or the solar components as needed. |

. Yes, its a non-hybrid which means you need a separate charge controller to use solar panels.
