Hello, ![]() interesting thread. Let me try to help in clearing some issues as regards the problems faced by users here in Nigeria. Am not an I.T guy so please bear with me. The major problem facing users in Nigeria is the lack of constant affordable internet. Bandwidth is a major limiting factor in the deployment of cloud services and server visualization infrastructure. Power is the next major issue. Imagine running a data center 24x7 on generators. The cost implications are enough to drive the prices of any services you may wish to offer. That's the reason why many major corporate companies host their sites and servers offshore. To make matters worse we are saddle with blood sucking mobile operators that are hell bent on extracting maximum cost from their users. The lack of competition coupled with a weak regulator has compounded matters. The opportunities here mentioned are good ideas, but implementing them and making a profit is gonna be tough. |
@Ikenna351 Your analysis is spot on. As long as the engine oi used in a vehicle conforms to the manufacturers specs then it's all good. Your decision to use synthetic or mineral based engine oil is based solely on your wallet. @Somorin, Here you go again ? Wetin worry you with Honda civic. If Adamu, Uchenna & Wole decided to put Mobil 1 synthetic in their Honda civic na their wallet now. You just finished talking to somebody about being cheap on car maintenance and your badgering Honda civic that plenty Nigerians use. Take time o !!! ![]() @Marpol, what was the engine oil viscosity rating of your 04' Nissan Xterra ? Are you telling me that the engine oil knocked your engine and you had to replace it ? Wow |
@Somorin, I feel your pain bruv ![]() Being cheap on car maintenance can bite you in the ass later. Now back to those viscosity ratings, a 2003 Toyota Corolla has a viscosity rating of 5w-30 as specified in the owner's manual. Unfortunately, you can't get that rating here from the major engine oil producers. However, i found a very close substitute to it (Quartz 9000 5w-40) at N8,000. It's fully synthetic. Can one use that safely in the car ? Thanks |
Wow !!! ![]() I don't even know where to start. Such an innocent question has resulted into such a backlash ![]() |
For most Honda vehicles (Accord), the recommended ATF fluid is the Honda ATF-Z1 (Automatic Transmission Fluid). However, i just saw the new Honda ATF-DW1 which replaces the Z1 retailing at $13 on Amazon.
|
For Toyota owners, here you go $28.67.
|
Just bought this on Amazon for $26.70. It's the recommended OEM coolant for Honda Vehicles. Supposed to last for 5yrs

aaidel: there are many people with high disposable incomes in nigeria so it shouldnt be a surprise if they want to indulge their wealth with something that makes them stand out of the crowdExcuse me, which salary/job in Nigeria will give you the money to buy a $2.1M Bugatti Veyron ? |
@Somorin#1, Thanks !!! I have gone through the site, very good information there. Now, that we have covered that aspect does the use of a 5w-30 engine oil have any drastic effect on the engine when you don't have access to a recommended 5w-20 engine oil ? Am trying to look at alternatives that one can safely use in the absence of another.

Make: Honda Model: Accord Sedan 4-Doors Model year: 2007 Engine size: 2,354cc. Engine configuration: 16-Valve DOHC i-VTEC. Power: 166 hp. Torque: 217 Nm. Fuel type: Gasoline. Induction: Transmission: 5-speed automatic. Drive configuration: FWD. |
I second that opinion too on using a grade of oil as specified by the manufacturer of the vehicle. Here's where my head keeps turning. You buy a vehicle imported from America (Honda Accord 07) to Nigeria. Honda specified an engine oil of 5W-20. Where i am currently based (Yola, Adamawa State) it is perpetually almost hot all year round. Average temps reach as high as 48' Degrees. Now the 07 Honda Accord has a 4cyl. 2.4Liter VTEC Naturally Aspirated engine. Can you still use the same engine oil as rated by the manufacturer considering the harsh environment your in ? |
@somorin, The range of engine oils commercially available in the Nigerian market is limited, which is why i mentioned the major brand names earlier. Mobil is currently regarded as the best. Though as you mentioned earlier, to each his preference and engine manufacturer requirement. On the use of synthetics, i am all for it. If it gives me enhanced performance and longer engine life, does it matter the type of car i put it in if its rated for it ? Will appreciate it if you can respond to my earlier raised questions. Thanks. |
@topic, Nice points by Ikenna351. For Nigeria, the most popular brand names i am aware of for engine oils are Mobil, Total, Oando, AP. Thanks to Ikenna351 for listing some of the Total Engine Oil brands here. Will look for and add for the other brands. So, what are we now saying ? Do they manufacture fake engine oils ? Are their engine oils not rated for current engine types in production ? Waiting for more information. |
Nice thread. Subscribing to it.@Topic, Good, engine oil is a critical factor of car maintenance and engine long-life. I have a couple of questions: 1.Can you expand more on the use of synthetic and petroluem based engine oils ? Am an ardent user of Mobil 1 products and most automotive users agree on the superior qualities that synthetics have over crude based oils. 2.Secondly, the use of oil filters. Does the use of extended performance filters help make engine oil last longer and cleaner ? 3.Which is better for a car engine ? Higher viscosity or lower viscosity ? 4.Honda & Toyota are the most widely used brand of cars in Nigeria in my opinion, what engine oil rating do you think applies to them for use in Nigeria ? Thanks !!! |
As a paying customer, no apology is needed. This is a service that should have been smoothly concluded a while ago. Wonder why they have such a lackadaisical attitude to their customer needs. It has scared off a lot of potential customers i tell you. |
@Trac, Honestly, i am still surprised you even bothered to respond here. Sometimes people just take a stand on a tiny issue and make a mountain out of a mole hill with it. I want to believe we are all mature people here but the issue of melting tires in water was the main issue that sidetracked this thread. I can confidently say that Trac has been more convincing in his arguments and points. Somorin it seems is just hell-bent on taking a divergent view without proferring detailed arguments to counter such. That's his prerogative. This is not a pissing contest to humiliate or find fault with each others arguments. Let's be gentlemen and move on please. Thank you. |
High Performance Xenon HID Honda Accord CCFL LED ( Replaceable LEDs ) Projector Headlights with Premium Ballast Black with 8000K Crystal Blue HID $271.99 on Amazon |
@Sienna So, that means i have to change my headlamps when installing a HID Kit and not just the bulbs ?!! Is something like this okay ?
|
I hope the FAQ i posted helps in answering some questions other users might have about HID kits. @Fogman, The issue is not whether the lights will work but proper installation procedures and guidelines in using such a kit in your car. Most cars imported from North America have daytime running lights or DRL. Most i have seen (Honda Accord) have it on their low beam lights (9006/HB3). Therefore it doesn't make sense to have a HID kit installed there as the lights are meant to be permanently on. The use of a HID light in that place will also cause the kit to malfunction as posted in the FAQ due to irregular voltage to the ballasts. The second observation is the use of a HID light in a headlamp designed to refract light from a halogen bulb. Unless the car came from the factory with HID lights installed, its headlamps will not be able to focus and direct the intense light that a HID kit can offer resulting in glare to oncoming drivers. Yes, you can install it in your vehicle no problem, but then you will be committing a serious breach of road etiquette when flash other drivers with your lights. |
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) Question : What are the advantages of having a Xenon High Intensity Discharge (HID) lighting system? Answer : There are three main advantages to installing an HID system in your vehicle. - An HID bulb produces roughly 3 times more lumens than a halogen bulb. - HID bulbs consume 30% less power than halogen bulbs. - With no filamentto vibrate and fatigue, HID bulbs last roughly 10 times longer than halogen bulbs. Question : How do I find out which HID kit to order? Answers :The vehicle owner’s manual may tell you what type of bulb you need however another place is on the bulb itself. The bulb type and wattage should be printed or molded into the base. For a quick check online try the Sylvania Replacement chart. Question : Which bulb color is the brightest? Answers : 5000k to 6000k are the brightest and also the purest white (some already sense a slight blue tint in the 6000k). The colors above 6000k become progressively more blue but less bright. Similarly, below 5000k, as the tint becomes warmer some brightness is sacrificed. Question : Why do I need ballasts? Answers : Standard car headlights run on a 12 volt electrical system. HID Xenon lighting systems require over 20,000 volts to ignite the bulbs. Once lit, they only require 35 watts to keep them running. A ballast is necessary for the lamps to turn on and to regulate the voltage. It is therefore an integral part of the system. Even the wires that connect the bulbs to the ballasts are special high voltage lines made just for this purpose. Question : What is the difference between genuine Xenon HID lights and Xenon gas-filled bulbs? Answers : High Intensity Discharge (HID) lights have a glass chamber of gas that replaces the filament of traditional halogen light bulbs. The gas is ignited with an approximately 23,000 volt charge and stays illuminated by a constant 12v source that is provided by a ballast which is connected directly to your battery. Cheap xenon-filled halogen bulbs do not use the same technology and are tinted blue to give off a white light. They still have a filament and produce less light output then standard halogen bulbs of the same wattage. Question : Could I not just purchase a stronger watt halogen bulb to get a brighter light? Answers : Factory halogen bulbs operate at 55 watts. Using a higher wattage bulb will produce more light but the output will still be dim compared to a true HID system. If you choose to use higher wattage bulbs, you increase the current draw on your entire electrical system and run the risk of melting your factory wiring or harming the rest of your electrical system. A true HID system runs at 35 watts while traditional halogen bulbs are 55 watts. Even though XENON HID lamps draw less current, they produce 3 times the light output as the higher wattage halogen bulbs. Question : What does the HID conversion kit include? Answers : The kensun hid conversion kits conversion kits are made from quality HID components that are designed to meet stringent quality standards. Each kit comes with all of the necessary components and hardware to install this system into your vehicle. 2 HID bulbs 2 Ballasts 1 Plug and play wiring harness with fuse and relay wired inline 1 Easy to follow installation and wiring diagram. These units are plug+play and will require no cutting of any wires during installation. Question : Could I install the kit myself? Answers : For anyone who is somewhat mechanically inclined, this installation is considered 'do-it-yourself'. Our kits are ready to install right-out-of-the-box and come with everything that you will need. We also provide you a full set of easy-to-read, step-by-step instructions to guide you. Question : What should I do if I touch the bulb? Answers: Never touch the bulb glass with grease, oil, or your skin as oil from your hands can shorten the life of the bulb. If you do touch the bulb, remove these oils with alcohol and a very soft cotton cloth. HID bulbs that are exposed to oils and grease will shatter and are not covered under the 2-year warranty. Question : Can I switch back to my original halogen bulbs after the HID conversion kit has been installed? Answers : If need be, the entire kit can be removed and the original halogen bulbs replaced within 20 minutes. The HID conversion kit can then be re-installed into another vehicle that uses the same bulb size. Question : Will I lose the ability to use the High beams? Answers : For vehicles using a single bulb for hi beam and low beam make sure to select the bulb size should be H/L (stands for hi and lo). after installation you will have the regular light HID and the hi beam will be halogen we also have a selection that the regular headlights and the hi beam should be HID contact us for details Question : Will DRL (daytime running lights) or Auto Switch On affect the HID kit? Answers : For vehicles with DRL that use the same bulb for both DRL and low beam you will need to deactivate your DRL. DRL operate on reduced wattage or fluctuating current levels. This will cause the HID system to flicker and burn out prematurely. Please ensure that your OEM headlight harness is providing a constant 12 volts to ensure that no damage will be caused to the HID system. The Auto Switch On will not affect the HID conversion kit or bulbs. The lights will simply turn on just like your factory halogen bulbs turned on before. http://www.kensun.com/faq.htm FAQ From Kensun Website |
@Fogman, What nissparts is saying sounds logical to me. Having a high intensity discharge light installed in your car without the appropriate casing to focus and direct that light will make it scatter and cause glare to oncoming users. This is more so for cars that did not have a factory fitted HID headlight casing in the first place. Just swapping the halogen for the hid is just the first step, (i think). This is why i posted the initial headlight casing in the first place. Changing the headlamps to those customised for HID lights will make it even better.

Broadband ke abi constant ni ![]() When ordinary GPRS or EDGE dey hard to maintain !!! If your lucky and very close to a cell tower with 3.75G then ur in luck, but then ping response times on mobile broadband is a killer. Which is why ADSL with lower speeds is always much better. |
What about cars that have Daytime Running Lights activated on their low beams (9006)? |
@25omega, Nice analysis. It seems Microsoft made a strategic decision not to invest too heavily on the gaming aspect of the console and instead concentrated on being the media device to go to for all your entertainment needs. The inclusion of a blu ray drive and 4K HDMI resolution definitely helps in that regard. Check out Anandtechs comparison between the PS4 and XBOX ONE XBox One Specs: - 8-core AMD Jaguar CPU - 12 CU/768 SP AMD GCN GPU - 8GB DDR3 system memory - 500GB HDD - Blu-ray drive - 2.4/5.0GHz 802.11 a/b/g/n, multiple radios with WiFi Direct support - 4K HDMI in/out (for cable TV passthrough) - USB 3.0

The future is indeed bright for Blackberry. Wish them all the best. My only issue is the affordability of such cars to the average consumer. Nna, na how many years salary you go use pay for such a car. Dat's all. |
Yeah, i get that. Was wondering if he (@nissparts) meant changing the headlight casing also. Currently looking at purchasing a Kensun HID Xenon Conversion Kit "All Bulb Sizes and Colors" with "Slim" Digital Ballasts - 9005 (HB3) - 6000k. Would be used for the high beams and leave the halogen for the low beams. Have some serious potholes and dangerous crevices that one must be aware of in my location. However, as always courtesy demands you respect other road users and dim ur lights when appropriate.

@chidindufrank, How gullible can you be ? Have you ever handled real money before ? How can somebody be walking around with N600,000,000.00 on him and posing as beggar ? Mstchewwwwwwwww !!!! |
According to reports, the new Xbox ONE will make it mandatory for all games to be copied to the hard drive and activated online before playing. Once activated on a console, it cannot be played on another without paying a token fee. That's Microsoft way of killing the used games market and combating piracy. Chai !!! Africa don disqualify for that category. |
@nissparts, Can you elaborate more on the headlight casings for HID lights ? I thought there was no need for changing the headlamps of your car when installing them. Are you talking about headlamps like these in the pix ?
