Car TalkRe: Challenges Of Vehicle Maintenance - There Are More To Engine Oil Than Sae20w-50 by samir101ng(m): 4:05pm On Jul 25, 2013
Guys, let's be clear on something !!!

The manufacturer of your vehicle has specified a particular rating for your engine. Be it 0w-30, 0w-40, 5w-20, 5w-30 etc These recommendations are made after exhaustive R&D testing. You cannot just pour any type of engine oil into your car engine because you feel like. The consequences are yours to bear. If you cannot get the recommended type, then try to get one as close to your rating as possible e.g 5w-20 recommended, using 5w-30.

@Lacasa,

Yes, mileage is a factor when choosing some engine oils as engines with high mileage tend to need more special lubricants than normal. The Mobil 1 extended performance engine oils is an example of an engine oil recommended for engines with high mileage. However, there is a standard version available for engines with less mileage.

3.55 or less

Get a console that is from 2010 downwards.
Car TalkRe: Challenges Of Vehicle Maintenance - There Are More To Engine Oil Than Sae20w-50 by samir101ng(m): 8:54am On Jul 22, 2013
@sultaan,

Unfortunately, you can't find those types of engine oil available to the "ordinary consumer" here in Nigeria. 90% of engine oils here are purchased at the filling station (we have listed the major brands earlier). Yes, as a car owner you should be knowledgeable about the type of engine oil your car requires. However, not everyone is "willing" to spend an extra amount (N5000+) on their car engine oil when they have other serious commitments in their lives. This is where Somorin#1's statement about using a high end synthetic engine oil on a low end car comes into play.

However, when your driving a relatively newer model car (2005+) there's no argument for being cheap and putting a low quality engine oil in your vehicle. If you can afford to purchase such a car, then be prepared for its maintenance expenses.

PoliticsRe: Attention To Rise In Earpiece Related Accidents by samir101ng(m): 10:11am On Jul 19, 2013
It's becoming a dangerous trend nowadays seeing people with headphones and earpieces walking on the road or even when jogging. Sometimes they crank up the music so loud that if your sitting next to them you can hear the sound. The worst however are the Beats by Dre generation of youngsters. Everywhere you go you see them. Now i don't understand how one can wear a head phone with a noise isolation/cancelling function and expect to walk about pinging or even drive (yes, i have seen a lady wearing them while driving in Abuja) without dire circumstances. May the souls of the departed rest in piece.

femmy2010: Some payments are better not explained on A public forum or one would get customs enforcement unit knocking on ones door.
Sure you get the hidden truth.
Am not sure i do, please. We are talking about LEGAL fees/charges as recognized under the law. As a law abiding citizen, you have a right to know the applicable charges that you must pay to clear your vehicles. If there are other "payments" that you do to "smooth" the process then that's a different matter entirely. But we are talking about approved charges by the Nigeria Customs Service. Why hide them ? The lack of explanation of this charges is why most car owners feel cheated by the clearing agents.
BusinessRe: Unending Delays On Shipments With Grimaldi by samir101ng(m):
Fhemmmy: I think there are some fees that you left out here and did not tell us about, cos i have always wonder how the agent does it, you see how much they pay for the value of the ride and yet you are charged this crazy cost.
Very good observation. Tell your clients all the payments involved both official and non-official. Specify your commission and negotiate if possible. If both parties agree to it, a deal is struck. Hiding certain fees or charges reeks of exploitation and shadiness to me.

Thanks guys, already on it. shocked shocked

Just waiting for them to finish the process and take delivery. But for a little more enlightenment of the process, after giving your vehicle documents (bill of lading, receipt etc), I.D, TIN and other particulars to the clearing agent, what then does the clearing agent do next ? @femmy2010, will appreciate your input on this as i am expecting another consignment soon. Thanks.

thanks bro. Yes, my name is stated as the consignee. I have a TIN number and also an international passport. I have the soft copy of the bill of laden as the original documents are in Lagos at the office to enable faster access. Need to start this clearing thing ASAP. Before heavy charges start applying. When do they start charging a person before clearing a vehicle ?
Car TalkRe: Spark Plugs Issues. by samir101ng(m): 11:52am On Jul 15, 2013
You know what ?! After going through so many articles and threads on the auto & car talk section, the level of ignorance displayed by some car owners almost makes you cry cry cry. There are somethings that as a car owner you should be knowledgeable about and have a say in when servicing your vehicle. Leaving yourself at the complete mercy of our local mechanics will cost you time, money and give you high BP. grin grin I once saw a mechanic hammering away at the engine of a 2008 Honda Accord EX-L V6. You should have seen the way my mouth dropped open with the "Alhaji" happily chattering away with some other customers sitting on a mat. A sound advice to any car owner is always read your car owners manual. If your vehicle didn't come with one, buy one or download it from the internet. A car owners manual will list all the needed maintenance schedule, engine oil, spare parts model/types to be used on your vehicle. A good OBDII diagnostic scanner will also come in handy in figuring out basic car problems before handing it over to a mechanic. Let's all be informed as it will not be a smart decision spending such a large amount on buying a car and then coz of lack of knowledge, an ignorant road side quack will be carrying hammer and knacking your car engine.

I wanted to have an meeting with some guys in Lagos Nigeria, It was almost impossible to have a telephone conference call facility
Bandwidth and power are key in solving some of the connectivity issues we are having. MTN Business offers teleconferencing (MTN ePresence) and MTN Conference Call at Eko Hotel using the Cisco platform. It's gonna cost you though as these are enterprise products geared towards large corporations and SME's.
Car TalkRe: Help With Port Clearance Clarification by samir101ng(m): 4:50pm On Jul 11, 2013
If what am hearing is true, then customs are not to blame. If every charge, fee or levy has a receipt and payment can be verified i have no problem paying my dues. It's when you are being quoted multiple prices by agents without clarification on the applicable fees that wahala starts.

Glo to build Nigeria’s largest Data Centre

Telecoms giant and Nigeria’s National Carrier, Globacom has set up state- of-the-arts Internet Data Centres in Lagos to provide co-location, disaster recovery and dedicated hosting services to its clients all over the country.

At the same time the company is expanding its existing data management platform by planning to build another world class facility that will be Nigeria’s Largest Iconic Data Center providing Tier 3 and Tier4 enterprise data services at Abuja , Nigeria’s Federal Capital Territory.

The new data centre will provide network based services, applications, equipment and Cloud Services in a highly safe secure and backed up environment.

According to Globacom’s Corporate Chief Information Officer (Information Systems), Mr. Cesar Camara, most of the websites and servers of various Nigerian organizations are hosted with established markets, such as in UK, USA Etc. due to unreliable power supply insecurity and other deficiencies in the system.

“This is why Globacom is stepping in to become one of the top players in the Managed Services Industry across Nigeria and West Africa. We do this by leveraging on our existing telecoms infrastructure, Glo1 Submarine cable, reliable power supply network, experienced manpower and experience in building State-of-the-art technologies for our existing voice and data telephony services” he told journalists while conducting them round its Data Centre in Lagos. .

Data Centres, especially the Tier 3 and Tier 4 categories, which provide the highest level of failure proof, redundant, secure and safe environment, fault tolerance, compartmentalization and continuous cooling, are highly valued by most organizations because all mission-critical/real-time applications today depend on server uptimes.

“this make our high capacity Data Centres highly sought after by by all categories of businesses including SMEs, Financial Institutions, Oil and Gas, Educationists, Hospitals to telecoms service provider” Camara said.

He explained that Glo’s data centre has achieved 99.99% uptime for all our servers and systems because they are housed in safe, fireproof and secure environment built to international standards with a 24- hour power supply, internet connectivity with data backup capacity and redundancy for all equipment .

The data centre’s products are designed and bundled based on either building and leasing rack space for computing machines or leasing computing space (cloud-based infra or apps stack) and power.

routik: this is getting more interesting.

I have already installed the flagfox. it has great features. awesome!

How can SMEs retail Cloud Computing Services? I don't think the big players in the industry will have much interest in serving individuals/SMEs after investing so much.For the fact that they need quick ROI, they will will focus more on big establishments that will be paying them millions.

@samir101ng, you seem to have enough (buried) information. i'm suspecting you own an ISP?
Your welcome !!! Okay, i get your drift about targeting the lower end of the market. But the problems are multifaceted. You have a shiny new data center with all the bells & whistles, how does a subscriber in Yola or Bayelsa access his information quickly and efficiently. Now comes the problem of connectivity (bandwidth). As i mentioned earlier, the telecoms providers are still holding us hostage without an open fiber optic super highway that users can access at an affordable price. The NCC http://www.ncc.gov.ng/ is currently working on establishing such a connection so let's keep our fingers crossed.

P.S No, i don't own an ISP (sadly), just seeking knowledge.
ComputersRe: Thread For Infrastructure, Networks, Virtualisation And Cloud Computing by samir101ng(m): 1:34pm On Jun 21, 2013
The Uk already has solid infrastructure on ground to help facilitate the flow of information. The Nigerian Internet Exchange point is slowly building the capacity http://www.ixp.net.ng/. They have a PoP in Lagos, Abuja & Port-Hacourt. Heard they are gonna open another in Kano and maybe Enugu to serve those regions. By having an exchange where ISP's and telecoms providers can peer their equipments together and have co-location for their servers is gonna help push the issue far. The second national operator (glo) should also invest more into fixed line infrastructure.

@moderator,

Kindly release my post as i only provided links to resources that could help our topic. Thanks.

@Sky-walker,

Nigerians use foreign based servers for their cloud services and backups because of the cost (free), up-time and reliability. The problems facing data centers in Nigeria which we enumerated earlier contribute towards this issues. But as i said earlier there is still hope. Universities like UNN, AUN Yola, ABU, UNILAG, University of Agric, Makurdi are deploying fiber solutions in their campuses in partnership with solution providers like Google, Hp, Cisco, Oracle etc By having faster connections and access to stable power, these campuses can host servers in their local communities.

Try using this add-on (flagfox)in your firefox browser. It will show you the ip-address, nslookup, who-is and other information of the server hosting the website. Some Nigerian companies are slowly deploying their websites on Nigerian based servers. MTN Business Nigeria is also helping towards that. Main One is also currently building a world class data center to help with that aspect. So, Nigeria is getting there.

@routik,

grin grin grin

Nice one !!!

@Sky-walker,

Nigeria has come far in terms of Information Technology and broadband penetration. However, we still have a long way to go. I still remember the old days of Nitel Dial-Up internet when we paid as high as N50 per min to browse the internet. We now have 4 submarine cables routing bandwidth to the country. However, the death of the national operator with its extensive equipment and reach has made mobile broadband more attractive to the GSM operators rather than deploying Fixed-Line infrastructure like ADSL, FTTH, etc Secondly, all the bandwidth is located at Lagos. Evacuating such bandwidth to the nooks and crannies of the country will require a national fiber optic broadband super highway connecting all the 36 capitals of the federation. Such a national fiber connection should be on an open access model whereby any ISP or communication provider can have access to it via the local internet exchange point and move its bandwidth. But the reverse is the case, all the major players in the sector are building their own exclusive cables and refusing to do business with the other. Why i am mention this is cause for a data center to thrive it needs multiple redundancy to fall over on in case of downtime.

brightk: i love mikrotik but cisco is more popular...wat do u ve 2 say abt thishuh?cos i want to settle for one of dem fully..
@brightk,

I also love Mikrotik. I also passed the MTCNA exams and attended the Mikrotik Router OS trainings. The Mikrotik Router OS is a very good router for SOHO, SME's etc that can handle all their networking tasks without breaking the bank. Not everyone can afford a Cisco Router. Mikrotik is also a very good wireless hotspot manager especially for cafes, campuses, neighborhood hotspots etc. Unless you intend to work in the corporate environment, Cisco might not necessarily be all that important for you compared to the Mikrotik Router OS. However, all knowledge is not wasteful. If you can afford the CCNA certification go for it.
