PhonesRe: Apple Loses Patent Case Related To Facetime, Asked To Pay $368 Million by samir101ng(m): 11:51am On Nov 08, 2012
You reap what you sow. Apple started to sue other companies based on flimsy excuses which the courts have proved and now everybody is ganging up against them. Nobody in the technology industry can stand up to a critique of its technological innovations. Everybody has copied something no matter how small from somebody. Its a case of the chickens coming home to roost. Instead of concentrating on innovating new products and pleasing its loyal fan base, it has now turned into a litigation company. Oh and by the way, Apple has promised to eliminate Android according to Steve Jobs. Therefore its bound to butt heads with Google eventually and other Android powerhouses. Good luck to them both.
PhonesRe: Share Your Experience As Regards Your Phones Purchased In SLOT? by samir101ng(m): 5:09pm On Nov 07, 2012
miksonics: Why is every body ranting about SLOT,you buy a blackberry, made by blackberry, and it turns out faulty after a specific period, who's fault.SLOT is reseller agent, their job is to sell what the manufacurers advertise to you in whatever medium,if their product fail, what have that got to do with SLOT,if you buy a BLACKBERRY AND THE COMPANY DONT HAVE AFTER MARKET SERVICE WHY BOTHER TO BUY THEIR PRODUCT,in time past nokia have the same problem and they opened service centre to cater for their product,HP open service center to cater for their product, sony at flying dove apapa did the same, toyota,KIA and countless other company,SLOT was not trained to run service center and hence does not have power to give warranty or guarantee.

You would fault SLOT if the product purchased is fake, and 2 the manufacturer is the only body capable of knowing if a fault is factory fault or customer abuse. You buy a phone and rain falls, some droplet of water gets into the phone and it spoils gradually, since water is a weak electrolyte,it causes small compound of salt to form on the phone circiut thus damaging the phone later on,the unknowledgeable customer start ranting about bad product sold to them.

Even a car bought brand new have its warranty removed if flooding for instance takes place.Power flucuation causes electronics to get bad, over charging causes phones to get back causing damage to the battery which get swollen up and sometimes the power supply of the phone circuit, fake power borrowed from friend and co could also damege a phone, manufacturer tells you use original nokia,bb charges only, you ignore the warning and the device fails who is to blame.

This thread should be removed from front page, its spoiling someones business.
First & foremost, by agreeing to be a retailer and distributor of Blackberry devices in Nigeria, SLOT has taken upon itself the responsibility as acting as an agent to RIM here in Nigeria. No any phone company that i know of has gotten the level of recognition or status from RIM that SLOT has.

Secondly, nobody is trying to trash SLOT here but there is a glaring trend of substandard products and Shoddy practices going on at SLOT. Please read through the earlier link i posted earlier and read through the services that their partnership with RIM has made them to offer. Therefore they are supposed to sell devices covered under warranty and offer repairs or replacements to defective units. As long as a product is under warranty, SLOT as an agent of RIM is obligated to honor it. It's just that their staff and management (still unknown if they know) are not living up to their responsibilities. Try that in other civilized countries and RIM will quickly terminate their partnership agreements.
PhonesRe: Share Your Experience As Regards Your Phones Purchased In SLOT? by samir101ng(m):
I only buy Blackberry Phones & Devices from Slot Nigeria. They are a RIM Blackberry Distributor and therefore sell original phones & accessories. The Regional Managing Director of RIM for the Middle East and Africa Robert Bose was the one that launched their store. Therefore, any Blackberry device sold their is under warranty and genuine.

http://crackberry.com/rim-open-new-blackberry-retail-store-nigeria

However, this is Nigeria. I can only infer that the staff of SLOT are the ones doing all the shady deals without the knowledge of their management. Asking people to pay for OS upgrades, charging customers for downloading apps etc are all illegal and not recognized by RIM. Read the article i posted & see the services they are supposed to offer. Most are usually free. Only Nigerian staff can defraud their management and get away with it. Most airline staff do this by telling customers that there is no ticket. However, they now come back and ask for N3000-N5000 and make it look they are doing you a special favour by booking your ticket. When you board the flight and look around you, lo & behold you find half the plane empty. angry angry They make the airline to lose a lot of customers and create a bad reputation & image to its customers. This i believe is what is exactly going on at Slot. Their management needs to seriously wake up and oversee their daily operations.

For the consumers, don't hesitate to write an e-mail to RIM detailing your experiences. At Slot Phones, ask to speak to a senior staff when you have any complaints and stand your ground. Its no use complaining when you don't back it up with action. Good luck.

Yeah !! Had to re-install AutoCAD 2012 & other software's for a friend when i upgraded his. He's an Architect and uses plenty of CAD, 3D Design and Engineering Software's. Windows 8 is still relatively new and will take some time before new drivers and program compatibility will be stable.

@Moonraker,

I have a net book (AsusVX6) with Nvidia Optimus on which i want to upgrade to Windows 8. However, am still skeptical to do so after hearing about your experience with the switchable graphics opn your system. Any thoughts ?! Arigatou in advance. grin grin

Konichiwa-Moonraker-kun !!! grin grin

Sorry about the long silence. Sallah break & all. Am pleased to inform you that i have become an official Windows 8 Evangelist cool cool. I have officially converted over 5 people to the new Windows 8 Pro & all are happy and adapting to the new OS. After downloading the Windows 8 Upgrade Advisor and creating a bootable USB flash drive, i have been actively encouraging friends & family to join the bandwagon. Most are usually upgrades so installation was a breeze. Only had to do a clean install like twice. Usually do my installation while connected to the internet via WLAN or LAN so as to get the latest updates. So far so good. Really impressed with the responsiveness and clean look.

On the Metro interface, am pleased to say that everybody i have installed it on has had no difficulty adjusting to the new GUI. Yes, the METRO interface will change how you used to do things but that's the constant thing only in life "Change". All those whining & complaining i believe need to just give it a little more time to adjust.

Have also applied and received my free Windows Media Centre license keys. Talking about keys, i bought my Windows 8 Pro license key for N6355.56 using my GTB Naira Mastercard. Its that easy. So, what are you guys waiting for ?! If you have an original copy of Win XP/Vista/7 you can apply and buy the new Windows 8 Pro license for roughly the same amount i paid. Good luck !!!

Am curious as to what exactly Samsung copied from Apple in that picture. Is it the silver color, the chiclet keyboard, track pad or the screen size ?? As far as i know, Apple hasn't patented any of these designs to be mutually exclusive to its Mac line up. I can agree with Apple that Samsung copied some of its mobile phone design but when it comes to the PC, almost everybody copies each other. Very few PC manufactures have distinctive designs as far as i am concerned. Am not saying or condoning what Samsung has done but merely pointing out that it isn't unusual. Pricing for Microsoft Surface Tablets and Covers Revealed

Microsoft's Surface tablet line will start at just $500.

Microsoft has kept pretty quiet about its Surface tablets. Despite unveiling the two slates back in mid-June, we still don't have a full list of specs for the devices. In fact, we're fast approaching the launch of the Surface tablets, and we still don't know what exactly is under the hood. Up until today, we didn't even know how Microsoft was going to price the devices.

The price of the Surface models has been the topic of much debate with many wondering what price point the tablets will start at. Though Microsoft has yet to talk pricing for the Intel-based model running a full Windows 8 install, the company this accidentally revealed pricing for its lower-end Windows RT model based on ARM this morning.

Though the site has since gone offline, it was up long enough for news of the pricing to spread like wildfire. The 32GB ARM-based Surface will sell for $499 sans Touch Cover. You can pay an additional $100 for the 32GB plus Touch Cover. There's also a $700 64GB model that will come with a Touch Cover included. It's not clear if Microsoft plans to sell the 64GB without the Touch Cover. If you buy the 32GB without the Touch Cover and change your mind, you'll be paying $120 to buy it separately. The Type cover will set you back ten bucks more at $130. Pricing in Canada is $20 more for the tablet SKUs, and $10 more for the separate covers.

Microsoft's Surface tablets are set to launch on October 26, the same time as Windows 8. No word on whether or not Microsoft plans to talk pricing in an official capacity prior to that date.

Apple Supplier Halts Production After Violence

Posted September 24th, 2012 at 3:15 am (UTC-4)

Foxconn, the company that makes Apple's iPhones, has suspended production at a factory in northern China after a brawl that involved as many as 2,000 workers and left about 40 people injured.

The clash erupted late Sunday in a privately-managed dormitory for Foxconn employees who work at the company's factory in Taiyuan.

China's Xinhua news agency says 5,000 police officers were dispatched to the dormitory and brought the chaos under control early Monday.

Foxconn says the incident appears to have started as a personal dispute and does not appear to be work related.

The Taiyuan plant employs 79,000 workers and manufactures automobile electronic components, consumer electronic components, and precision moldings.

Foxconn, owned by Taiwan's Hon Hai, is the world's largest contract maker of electronic goods and employs about one million workers in factories across China.

The company has faced scrutiny over complaints about its wages and working conditions.

Nokia Explains Why You Should Get a Lumia 920 Instead of an iPhone 5

Samsung has definitely had its time to poke fun at Apple's recently announced (and soon to be released) iPhone 5. Last weekend, Samsung released a print ad that proclaimed "It doesn't take a genius" to select a Galaxy S III over the iPhone 5. Yesterday, Samsung got even bolder by releasing a new TV commercial that not only poked fun at the iPhone 5, but also the rabid fans that camp out for hours (if not days) to be the first to have the latest Apple smartphone.

Now, Nokia is having its fun in the sun with an infographic that touts the advantages of its Windows Phone 8 device -- the Lumia 920 -- over the iPhone 5. Naturally, Nokia points to a number of Lumia 920 highlights including wireless charging and the ability to use the touch screen with gloved hands.

So what do you guys think? Does Samsung or Nokia make a better case in countering the iPhone 5 juggernaut?

Just couldn't help myself grin grin

Here's a comment from one of the users on the thread

By Motoman on 9/20/12, Rating: 5
By Motoman on 9/20/2012 3:25:01 PM , Rating: 5

I'll repeat and paraphrase myself:

Apple consumers don't care. About anything. Specs, quality, cost, fitness-for-purpose, whatever. And certainly not realistic reviews.

If it's an iPhone, they're buying it - without spending the slightest amount of effort to even think about it. It's an Apple iPhone. Therefore they buy it.

It wouldn't matter if the latest Nokia washed your car, printed money, and somehow got you laid by supermodels every night...if the iPhone 6 was literally a burning turd in a box guaranteed to give you cancer, it would still sell out to 100% of the Apple fan base.

PhonesRe: Fanboys Or Not? by samir101ng(m): 9:51am On Sep 21, 2012
texazzpete: The main reason why people are fanboys is because they are broke. They cannot afford everything, they settle for one...and that's fine and good. What's not fine is that they now feel so INSECURE about their purchase and have to make fun of and run down the competition just to feel better about their purchases.

So..rule of thumb. Anywhere you see someone call people 'iSheep' or 'iDiots' or 'seXbox' or 'gaystation3', 9 out of 10 times they are poor people.
Like to disagree with you on that. No, money sometimes doesn't have anything to do with it. Living in an environment like Nigeria where people place a lot of emphasis on material things, you see people buying stuffs and gadgets just for "effizy". Plenty of times, they don't have a clue as to how the particular device has other functions apart from its possession e.g Blackberry. That's why you see so many people being picked on in the forums. For some, its blind loyalty others inferiority complex. Personally, i can afford to get most of the devices i want but always do a lot of research before buying one, not out of blind loyalty or because one is superior to the other. My personal choice comes first and will not shove it down anybody's throat.

Lastly, am wondering about the rational behind posting every device that you own ?? undecided undecided

Benchmarks Show iPhone 5's A6 is Twice as Fast as A5 Chip

How does the iPhone 5 stack up against previous iOS devices and its Android competitors?

When Apple unveiled the iPhone 5 last week, the company revealed that it was running on an Apple A6 chip. However, there wasn't a whole lot said about the chip itself. Thankfully, the weekend has brought us some benchmarks, courtesy of Geekbench, which shed some light on the chip that makes this smartphone go.

Geekbench's results say the iPhone 5's processor is a dual-core 1.02 GHz ARMv7 CPU. This flies in the face of previous reports that the Apple A6 was an A15 or A9 chip. The iPhone 5 posted a Geekbench score of 1601. To put that in perspective, the iPad 3's dual-core A5X scored 797 with Geekbench, and the dual-core A5 in the iPhone 4S scored just 632. If these Geekbench numbers are accurate, iPhone 5 users can expect performance that's double that of an iPhone 4S.

When you pit the iPhone 5 against Android, the Galaxy S III just squeaks in past the iPhone 5 with a score of 1628, while the Nexus 7 tablet scores a 1604. The next Android phone to score close to the iPhone 5's 1608 is the HTC One S, which boasts a Geekbench score of 1277. The A6's score of 1608 matches that of the Intel Core 2 Duo SU7300, and ahead of the Intel Celeron 570, the AMD Opteron 148, the AMD Athlon 64 3500+, and the Intel Pentium SU4100.

The iPhone 5 is set to go on sale September 21, so expect more detailed benchmarks as the phone becomes available to the masses.

I trust Apple not to do an advert back because of Samsung, you know why? Apple is not threathened with the plastic you people call phone. By Billy Steele posted Sep 19th 2012 12:05AM

A few years ago, Sony pulled the curtain back on a slimmed-down version of its PlayStation 3, and yet another Japan-only version since then. Today at the company's pre-Tokyo Game Show press event, the latest rumored redesign to the PS3 was announced. The new duo gets even smaller in stature and will arrive in stores with both black and white offerings, available in 250GB and 500GB models. The "charcoal black" option has a September 25th launch date for the 250GB bundle (with Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception "Game of the Year Edition"wink and a $269.99 price tag, while the "classic white" model arrives on November 22 (at least in Japan -- this is a TGS presser after all). For those looking for more storage space, the 500GB, charcoal-only option will be available on October 30th in conjunction with the Assassin's Creed III release -- no word on pricing just yet, though. Sony Computer Entertainment CEO Andrew House introduced the new model, calling it 50 percent smaller than the original (rather large) PS3, and 25 percent smaller than the previous slimmed-down version.

Its good to see people passionate about their devices. Show's how much an impact they make in our daily lives. However, let's try & be mature by keeping it clean and arguing with logic rather than resorting to name calling and denigrating people's characters.

Respect all you guys.

@thread,

Though its an Iphone Killer Apps thread, nobody (including iPhone/iPod touch users) has submitted a new app in a while. Though the new Iphone 5 and IO6 are the main topics getting all the headlines, the owners of such devices should kindly help out post new apps to convert us newbies. grin grin

Thanks

P.S Just to contribute more information to the discussion, most of the posters on the thread are based in Nigeria where most of the features of the Apple IOS are basically rendered useless due to high data charges and lack of support. LTE networks are still a mirage when we are still grappling with non-functional 3.5G networks with poor coverage. The number of Iphone users is also quite low compared to Blackberry and Android users who both have Retail Outlets that sell the products at "affordable prices". The official Apple resellers i previously mentioned charge a high exorbitant price even for Apple (N202,500 Iphone 5 16GB Unlocked Abuja). Its cheaper to buy it online and have it shipped. Now for the Android consumers, Samsung just opened a new flagship store in Lagos http://www.guardiannewsngr.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=98411:samsung-opens-new-consumer-store-in-lagos&catid=55:compulife
