Nigerians are definitely undertaxed, but the social contract between the government and the people fell apart long ago, and increased taxation will definitely be met with resistance as long as people perceive their money as going toward funding Aisha Buhari's Neck Pain Adventures to Dubai or buying 2020 Camrys for a bunch of idlers. In other words, the only feasible way the government can seriously raise revenue apart is by putting more people into the tax net with new indirect taxes.
This is also true... sadly

There is a very thin line between Taxation and extortion........................... I happen to have witnessed the birth and growth of a local market in the village..................... This local Government Chairmen, councellors, honorables and OBAs generate a lot of revenue from a very humble market from space allocation, store allocation, and vehicles that deliver food stuffs and Goods........even the water provided in this market cant be acccessed by store owners, you pay for this water........yet the market can best be descibed as a Cesspit

The local government never see it fit to take the market to the next level........ All what they are looking for is for you to bring in a new idea, make money and they come for their own cut with all manner of new levies

Most people that talk about taxes on forum are not incident to major taxes.............. You cant make money in Nigeria without the Government rearing its head to collect taxes............

The Government just has to improve its accountability to the people

If you happen to run a medium scale manufacturing facility and Government does not disturb you with all manners of levies and Taxes, Please tell me let me join you there

If you know the amount of businesses that have folded up because of taxation................
I’ve not seen anyone in Nigeria who pays up to 50% of their income as tax. Yes... like half of your income. Sounds ridiculous? Well, that’s how much some people pay on just their income in developed countries. You’d rarely find anyone whose TOTAL tax makes up to 10% of what they earn in Nigeria.

Sorry, but Nigerians are heavily undertaxed. And it shows in our balance sheets, even when we compare our total revenues to other African countries, despite oil still shoring it up significantly. Without oil receipts, Nigeria would not even be able to survive. There’s basically no tax revenue. First, there’s the low tax base, and the very few people captured in the tax net pay very low percentages.

Sounds like a fair game until you need 50 million for a surgery. Or you need to spend several hundreds of millions over the years due to an illness that needs constant therapy. Then you’d know the benefits of everyone pulling their weight together to ensure free universal healthcare for all.

Biko, I was recently thinking about international school business. From the little research I've done, 80% of Nigerian state capitals (apart from Lagos and Abuja) have enough wealthy people to sustain at least, 2 schools, each with 1000-1500 students charging 2.5 to 4 million per annum per student.

Can anyone else confirm this? What do you think? In your opinion, how true is it?
These kinds of outrageously expensive schools already exist in cities across the country. They are a thriving business in cities like Ilorin, Abeokuta, Kano, Kaduna, etc. You’d find lots of them in those cities. Yes, there’s a market but have you actually been to those schools? Those schools are a totally different world.

The facility is much better than the average school abroad in fact. The teachers they use are paid very high salary. Their recreational centres are total luxury. The classes are fully air conditioned. Their labs (both science and arts) are fully equipped (In every sense of the word). etc...

You’d need really deep pockets to be able to compete against these established options. If you have that deep pocket, then this is indeed a lucrative business. If not, there’s no way to make it work... cos rich people paying that high won’t accept “patch patch”... “help us manage”.

Hi guys.
Help please.
I am filling my Visa application at the moment.
The issue is,I renewed my passport but the old one has not expired.
I was wrongly advised by the agent to renew it,I it,I didn't know that if it has 6 months validity its still valid.
My old passport has up to 2 years validity.
So the issue now is,my CAS was issued using my new passport number so automatically it's what I should fill during my visa application ,but my old passport has my travel history to South Africa.
My question is,if I declare my travel history to SA I would need to upload my old unexpired passport right?
Is there any negative effect of having an old unexpired passport and a new passport.

Please help, its bugging me so much I cant sleep.

@justwise @aprokodaughter

Anyone help please
It’s not a crime to renew passport before its expiry. As long as immigration have cancelled the old passport accordingly, you’re good. There’s nothing to worry about.

Yours was genuine but sadly they got it wrong. Well let hope they will reverse ur visa back.

What about those ones that have paid agent years back just to get travel history to secure Canada visa then and later still got refused ... what should such ones do though the stamp was genuine but d travel was not real. My friend is really sacred though he haven't apply for UK visa yet still waiting for the school offer ...... pls what is d way forward oh and have anyone scale through ? Or should he get another passport to avoid story after visa approved
It’s impossible for you not to travel and have a “genuine” stamp. If you didn’t travel, any stamp indicating the travel is FAKE, even if na immigration official at MMIA stamp am with his legit stamp. Na still fake stamp.

Way forward? Get a new passport without the stamp. However, if Canada already flagged the fake stamp in their database, then no way out, the record go jam you at UK embassy.

Good day everyone. I'll be travelling to london via British Airways tonight. Please, how much should i budget for the airport extortion? Thanks
You can budget zero. I am a frequent traveller and I have never bribed an airport official in my life. If you’re a first time traveller, just be informed about all the airport procedures and keep a straight face, so you won’t be looking and behaving like a JJC when you get to the airport. Also follow all the rules. Weigh your luggage before leaving your house and also know the things allowed in your luggage (both cabin and check-in).

This way, you can stand your ground and refuse to let anyone fleece you. Trust me, they will try, but they will leave you alone if you refuse to give them anything... as long as you actually haven’t broken any rule. If you don’t do anything that would require “abeg”, you can pass through the airport without paying a dime.

A quick one..

If my flight is 8:15- 2:35 from Abuja to London.

Using London time, will I be arriving London
@ 1:35?? As Nigeria is 1hour ahead(GMT)

I plan on using National express from terminal 5 to Coventry or Birmingham which ever I see feasible...(haven't booked yet as I'm not sure of the timing)

Please can someone help me with the timing?

Kindly forgive my ignorance..I only intend to plan my journey well..
All the times on your itinerary are synced with the reference city. So the time of your arrival in London is London time.

Having issues upgrading my paga account. It is taking forever to verify my price of address. Please is there other ways to pay. I really need help
Here are some options.
1. Get someone living abroad to pay for you using their foreign credit/debit card.
2. Open a domiciliary account, fund it with dollars, get the debit card and pay with that.
3. Contact your school's representative in Nigeria and they may be able to help.
4. Wait till CBN lifts the restrictions on naira cards.
5. Try to sort out your issue with paga, and use that.

The post that started the tangent of the conversation was someone else
Those who responded was also someone else
And I joined to air my own views too.

Probably my own posts and the position I take hit you a lot
As probably a "Stay at Home " Nigerian
That's why you are making it about me
I made a general comment for people to end the thread derailment. I didn't quote you, I didn't comment after you have commented (not like that would even mean I'm talking to you). But ONLY YOU felt the need to justify why it was okay for the thread to be derailed.

Now that you probably realize how unreasonable that is... instead of just admitting your wrong and moving on or at least just keep quiet... you are now trying to exempt yourself from the situation/responsibility and claim that you are being targeted. How very Nigerian!

It was our thread

Maybe you are a newcomer here

T Bill's is dead and buried
If you had questions
You ask

If not
You keep quiet and ignore the thread

Not talking about mods coming to close the thread
Or whatever drivel (let me borrow your word) you came here to say.
If you dont like how different topics are discussed here with dissenting opinions

You can take a hike
For someone who is on this thread going on and on and telling us about how undisciplined and uncultured Nigerians are. Here you are, right here on the same thread; DELIBERATELY derailing the purpose of the thread. And when it is pointed out to you, instead of consciously trying to get back to course, like any rational human in other parts of the world would do, you prefer to get defensive and rudely try to justify what you are doing instead.

Friendly advice... maybe you need to look in the mirror more frequently, while channeling all these your outrage at Nigeria. You just might be part of the problems you are running away from. Just saying. Take care of yourself sir.

Okay. But this is still a treasury bills thread. Some of us come here just for that and other relevant investment topics. You can always create a separate thread to discuss your drivel about migrating out of Nigeria or staying (there's in fact a tone of such threads already that you can join). University of Bradford.
See the mail below.
The UK new student visa route effective from October 5.
All students applying through the new Student route will need to demonstrate they meet the required 70 points. They will achieve the required points if they can demonstrate that they have an offer from an approved educational institution, speak English and are able to support themselves during their studies in the UK.

Please note that the Immigration Health Surcharge will also increase from mid - October 2020. This means students and their family members will be required to pay £470 a year, instead of the current annual charge of £300.
Student Route - changes for students
Applications for entry clearance can be made up to 6 months before a course starts.
Study time limits will no longer be applied to study above degree level. They will otherwise remain as they are currently.
Maintenance levels will be adjusted to £1023 per month.
The list of ‘low-risk’ nationalities subject to reduced documentary requirements will be expanded to include EEA nationals. The list will continue to be kept under review.
Maintenance would be increased this October? Ah! shocked shocked I thought it was only ihs that was increasing ooo.

I understand its a burden that's why I am even asking. I would have transferred the money immediately to my personal account, but that would reset my 28 days validity down to zero. I figure giving a sound explanation should be easier. School has resumed already, I've just been attending classes online.
Tbh, I think this is a great and valid reason. I think the visa officer would understand the time constraint that has made you to decide not to transfer the money into your personal account. No need to pad up with any lies. Just say it as it is. However, like others have pointed out, you should also get ready to explain your relationship with your uncle. Again, just the plain truth, no padding. You’ve not done anything against rules, so you should be okay overall.

You cannot lose all your money in a SEC regulated fund, you can tell me of any you know in Nigeria

I have given you the types of funds

Money market fund

Fixed income fund

Eurobond fund

Equity funds

Balanced funds

Real Estate Investment Trust funds.

The various funds have their features. The funds have fund managers, Trustees, Registrars and the overall regulator SEC.

The fund manager manages the fund and invests in the recommended Investments for the fund, finances of the fund are with the Trustees. The trustees ensures that the fund and fund manager operates within the regulated investments, ensure compliance, corporate governance, fairness and ethics.

The trustees also send monthly and quarterly reports to the regulator, that is SEC. The Registrars keep records of the Investors of the fund.

The riskiest is equity fund, but also gives the highest returns. But it is not possible for investors to lose all their funds.

If you know any SEC regulated Investment, where Investors lost all their funds you can share the name of such funds
There are certain people we shouldn’t waste valuable typing time on. Forget that guy.

He/she was the same one I was telling about the basics of currency trading/investment, and was telling me if I was God who knows when a currency has peaked or is low enough. Now, he/she is making another case for “no one knows tomorrow” BS for SEC regulated investments. I’m not surprised.

So socialism of some sort is basically a consensus these days worldwide. Where Nigeria has gotten it wrong is investing so much in subsidising consumption (petrol and electricity) as opposed to developmental areas such as education and health care.
Education and healthcare is actually subsidised in Nigeria. In theory, public schools in Nigeria are free up to secondary school level. In practice, I’m aware schools still charge pupils some few hundred naira (Equivalent of less than $3) for some petty things. At university level, students pay around $100 tuition per session. That’s less than the administrative charges that students pay in “tuition-free” Europe. Health care in public hospitals is also death cheap, and most times, you only have to worry about drugs. In the US, getting a common ambulance from a public hospital will set you back $6,000.

Most Nigerians don’t realize it, cos we are used to the prices we pay for these things, but we are actually getting a lot of public services/infrastructure at rock bottom prices, even when compared to other African countries. Their quality though, is a whole different discussion altogether.
