Thanks!

Just got the 3 contract sim. The network is terrible around here, despite checking the signals before the deal.

Was hoping to transfer my old (Lebara) number to them, but with this network ish, I might cancel the deal within the 14 days cancellation window.

What do you advise?
Ah. Not really sure. 3 network is perfect in my area, so I didn’t have to worry.

What's been the exchange rate of recent?

This has always been my concern. I eventually used my USD card to withdraw Pounds today, and it was bad.

For context, I withdrew 250 quid, and 357.82 USD was debited from my account. The difference is too much.

The exchange rate was pegged at £1:$1.4088. Access fee was charged at £3.99. Then they added a "Mark Up" fee of 12.8%.

Is this a normal experience with exchanging USD to GBP via a Nigerian issuer?
Omo, na wayo be this. UBA doesn’t charge me any fees, and the FX rates I get is always very close to what’s on Google.

PS: I have only used bank ATMs, as those street ATMs carry additional fees and sometime terrible exchange rate. However, it’s always best to just use your card more for purchase and less for cash withdrawals, especially for this kinda wayo bank.

How's work and family, everyone? smiley

Please what network is advised for a sim contract to boost credit rating?

An idea of the cost will also be helpful. EE sim-only contract rates are somewhat high.

I currently use Lebara, but I read somewhere that Lebara and a few other networks aren't apt for credit score building.

Thanks
I use three. It’s the cheapest of the main networks.

Yes, you can. I currently have 2 mortgages. My source of income and affordability tests were based on my contract jobs.

I used very good mortgage brokers/advisors that sourced the lowest possible interest rates for me though.

Anything is possible if you have a very good mortgage broker that knows his stuff.
Please name them? If you don’t mind.

Advise needed please. Asking for my brother who is about to travel. Should he convert ALL the money in his account to pounds and travel along with the money , or open a dorm account and leave them there. How can one go about that money part please? Lastly, can I pay the remaining part of his school fees using form A when he has gone?
If you’re able to get pounds in Nigeria, bring cash with you. If what you have is dollars, open a dom account, put your dollars there, and then use your card to make purchases in the UK. In my experience with UBA, they debit money in real exchange rate (the one you get on google and oanda). Also, no fees on ATM withdrawal if you withdraw at bank ATMs.

Elders, please how does bus transportation work up north. I stay in Peterlee. Do I need to buy tickets ahead before boarding or I can just pay in the bus like normal danfo in Naija lol? .

Secondly, Is there a ticket that works for all service providers like arriva, stagecoach etc?
For trains, you always have to buy tickets upfront (either on the app or at the station). For local buses, you can buy tickets upfront on the app, or you can buy directly from the driver when you board.

Yes, there are usually tickets that serve all buses and trains. It’s usually around £7+ for a day ticket, depending on your city or town. Just search online and you’d see all the options available to you.

Hello all,
I am trying to pay the balance of my fees. A banker suggested I send the pounds back to Nigeria and pay with the bank rate. I am still trying to understand that logic and how it will help me save money. Any thoughts please?
The logic is that you send pounds to Nigeria at black market rate, then have someone pay your fees for you using form A. Your money will go farther this way. However, you’ll only get peace of mind with this method if you have parents in Nigeria, and they are aware of the form A processes. If you send money to a friend or someone random, e fit enter voicemail ooo. cheesy cheesy cheesy

Yes we can put up YouTube videos but we should avoid putting up false information (especially about Uk). The other day this same lady video was posted here and she was saying dependants needs to come to the uk 6 months before applying for PSW which is not true and she was saying it in confidence.
This claim I actually found out recently to be true, from a friend’s experience. While there’s no clear home office rule stating this, there’s a technicality in immigration visas that makes it an issue.

In simple terms…If you apply for a dependent visa less than 6 months to the expiration of the main visa, you may not be issued a dependent visa… you may be issued a normal visiting visa. [I’m using “may” here because nothing is absolute, but generally BRPs are never issued for less than 6-months stay in the UK].

So, while the visit visa serves your purpose to be with your spouse for the rest of his/her studies, it’s not a standard dependent visa, and will certainly give problems when you want to use it for PSV application. Make everybody shine their eyes.

This is a very sad case, but it's a reminder of the thin line registrants in healthcare professions thread. One day you are on the register and living a good life, and the next day, you can be struck off the register when a complaint is upheld against you. I feel this nurse should have been suspended for a few months or allowed to continue practice with restrictions. The sanction of outright expulsion from the register because she panicked when she saw a patient not breathing is too severe in my opinion.

These are the kind of sanctions that make me suspect racial bias.
You do realise that the baby would have died if the parents didn't take over in resuscitating the child and dialing 999, yea? And she doesn't deserve an expulsion for that? For almost murdering a child because she can't keep her emotions and over-religiousity in check? And we wonder why the system in Nigeria isn't working....

We seriously need to realise that certain level of carelessness should carry grave consequences. Mistakes, one-off... etc. It is still what it is. She messed up BIG TIME! - maybe it's time for her to go and rest at home. If you have lost a family member as a result of the careless handling that many of the healthworkers in Nigeria do, you wouldn't talk like this.

I have a question. If an employer decides to sponsor you to the UK by giving u a COS and Tier 2 Visa.

What now happens when u decide to maybe study a course in the University in UK after some months.

Will you have to switch back to Students Visa where u only work 20hrs per week while u study or u just continue on the Tier 2 Visa where u can work unlimited?

Thank you.
No. You can also study on your tier 2 visa if your employer permits you to do so.

I will agree with this only if he does not see giving his own mum money monthly as an obligation as well, if he has siblings too.

Decision on giving money to parents should be based on fairness, affordability and situations of the parents.
False equivalence. It’s his OWN mum. No one is stopping her from giving her mum money too. But that obligation shouldn’t be on her husband. Abeg.

This is a personal issue that is bothering me. I have decided to post it here with the hope that I would get matured advise here. Besides, people on this platform would be able to advise better since most live in the UK.

I came to the UK last year on student's visa for a 2 year programme. it was challenging upon arrival because the country was on lock down and getting a job was not a walk in the park. When I got one, I had to work many hours during holiday period to pay the debt I owed and also to bring in my family (2 kids + wife). I had to pay for quarantine accommodation because I wanted them to come in December. I got a 2 bed, furnished it, bought other items to make life at least a bit better for my wife. However, she is not appreciative and I am beginning to regret bringing her.

When she arrived, we were all over each other, probably because we've missed each other and all of that. I just noticed that her attitude started changing. I had an idea of what could have brought a change of mood but I didn't want to guess. May be a week after her arrival, I told her about my plan to bring in my mum in April - May so she can help with the kids so that both of us can work as much as we want, knowing fully well that she too will do her masters come next year. She told me it was okay and she had nothing against it. So today, I told her that I would be sending money to my mum by month end so she can starts apply for her passport. She kept quiet for some seconds and said okay. Then, she began to tell me how I always make decisions without carrying her along and how I always kick when she has something better. Then I asked her to gave an instance. She said back at home, she had a certain amount she was giving to her mum every month which she suspended when I was planning to come. She went ahead to tell me that I never gave her mother anything except on few instances since we got married. And then she said, 'what is your plan for my mummy?'

I told her that during the time I was unable to give to her mum, I didn't have and I wasn't even giving to my mum too. However, in December when she with the kids, my mum and her sister were on their way to the airport, I sent 20k to her and sent a message that she should give the sister to help me give her mum as Christmas money. I made it clear that she raised the issue because of my plan for my mum and she denied it. Meanwhile, her mum has a daughter in the UK with her husband. They have tried to bring her in on 2 occasions last year but she was denied. So I told her that we can't bring her mum in now because Home office might think we are desperate and place her on a 10 year ban. She would not have any of my explanations. She just withdrew into her shell.

I left where we were to the room and thought about all my struggle in bringing her and felt terrible. I was wondering if this is not the same woman I told that I worked 21 nights and was still going to lectures from work in order to raise money for their travel. I worked in a food processing company (you can imagine the cold), laundry etc to bring them in. I know the matter has not died and she would still raise it and it may lead to a big fight. We have had the discussion before at home and it led to a terrible fight. Now this. Let me quickly chip it in that when she came and we talked about money for family projects, she initially said each of us should keep our money and contribute a certain percent. The reason she made the suggestion was that she might want to give her mother money and for personal stuff which I may not agree to her dipping hands into family purse. I told her that contributing a quota might not work because of all the things we desire to achieve this year. I told her that what can work is to take a certain amount from her weekly earning for her mum and personal stuff and putting the remaining into the family account and I will also do likewise. She agreed to the suggestion.

Please, how do I handle this matter? I don't want fight because I have a lot to do and I tell you her words can make the meekest man on earth to misbehave. In my life, I have never thought of divorce or separation, but it came to my mind today after the discussion. In fact, I am beginning to look for a job that would take me far away from home as it appears as if we appreciate each other when we are apart.

Now, I can't concentrate on my ICAs. I just hate it when people are trying to manipulate me. It's so painful if you are dealing with someone who doesn't appreciate your efforts. Yesterday, I gave her 85GBP for her DBS. Before she left home, she complained around October that she wanted to change her wardrobe, I sent money. Getting here, she told me she can't be wearing those clothes, I gave her 100GBP. I gave my card details to add on her phone account for data all in a bid to make her happy and for us to have a peaceful home which we didn't have in Naija because of lack of resources.

See, the kind of advise I need is what to do not to give too much attention to her. Suggesting that I should have a heart-to-heart talk with her won't work because it has never worked. It always leads to heated argument and insults. I won't mind if someone can recommend a good marriage counselor.

Please, I didn't post this for likes and shares. Na solution I dey find abeg
1. Communication: talk to her and let her be aware of how you feel, just as you stated it here. Don’t argue any counter/defence she has (that’s how it turns to fight). Just state your case so that she’s fully aware of how she’s making you feel and don’t argue further.

2. Carry your wife along in your decisions: She already told you what you’re doing that she doesn’t like. So try to correct that. Make decisions together with your wife as your partner, instead of informing her of things after you have decided and closed the case on your own.

Wishing you the best.

So having a number that's supposed to be used for sensitive transactions such as the bolded easily accessible is ill-thought-through at best, and seriously incompetent at worst.
.
Keyword "identity verification". Your passport is an identity document, so again, it's not out of place to have your identity number on it. I have worked in a department where I have to review passports from different parts of the world, and many countries' passports actually feature a national identity number. Also, your passport is not just any basic material, it's an important document that you should keep private and only provide to relevant authorities. If you leave your passport carelessly about, oh well....

Moreover, Nigerians use their passports less frequently (and for far more confidential exchanges) than they use their NIN slip, which has that number clearly on it. So, your outrage dey somehow. But, love and light sha

They're still issuing the old passport at the HC, at least as at November.
So they're not requiring the NIN.
Perhaps when they switch to issuing the new redesigned one, they might (the new one has a space for the so-called NI number, ridiculous in my opinion, why put a so-called personal number on an identity document, some blockheads in Abuja not thinking as usual), but for now it's not being requested.
Maybe because it’s called “National IDENTITY Number”. It’s not out of place to have it on identity documents. I think you may be confusing its use with UK’s NIN, which is a National Insurance Number, established for welfare and tax administration purposes, and not to confirm people’s identity (even though it still functions for that). The equivalent of UK’s NIN would be Nigeria’s TIN or even BVN, which would have no place on identity documents because that’s not the purpose of those numbers (even though they function for that).

Should I be worried?
Unless it is your surname that was omitted, there are no consequences to this. As long as the your surname is on all documents and one other name is consistent and correctly spelt throughout, you have no problems.
