In as much as I want PDP to lose the presidency, it will be terrible for our democracy if the party died. Our democracy would be better and stronger if we had at least 2 strong national parties; that way, we end up with a strong opposition keeping a ruling party on their toes. It has taken us 16 years to have a national opposition (i.e. APC) which can challenge a ruling party and if PDP dies, APC would become boring, and so will the elections in Nigeria.

Politics › Obasanjo’s Tearing Of PDP Card Provocative, Insulting -fani-kayode by Sanchez01(op): 10:59pm On Feb 16, 2015
The Peoples Democratic Party Presidential Campaign Organisation reacted to the departure of former President Olusegun Obasanjo from the party, saying while he is free to leave, he does not have to spit in their faces by publicly tearing the party card.

In a statement by Director of Media and Publicity, Chief Femi Fani-Kayode, the PDPPCO said, “Watching our party membership card being torn up whilst President Obasanjo was standing there and smiling was painful and tragic.

“This is a party which he helped to build and on whose platform he was elected President for eight good years.

“The truth is that President Obasanjo is far better and far bigger than that. Such behavior is provocative and unacceptable.

“He is free to leave the party but does he have to spit in our faces by tearing up our party card in public and before the television cameras?”

The organisation noted that the ex-president’s action indicated that he had left the party for ever.

The statement added, “This knee-jerk reaction is most unlike President Obasanjo and it is very insulting. It is clear that he has burnt all the bridges and that he has left us forever.

“On a personal note, I feel saddened by this but the truth is that many in our party members have heaved a huge sigh of relief. Many of us love President Obasanjo and we shall continue to do so regardless of whether he is in our party or not but tearing up that party card was too much to bear.

“It spoke volumes and it was indicative of the deep hatred and contempt that he has for us and our cause.

“It reminded me of the biblical passage in which King Saul rejected David and then planned to stop him from ascending to the throne by attempting to kill and destroy him.

“Thankfully, the Lord was with David and not only did he deliver him from Saul, but he also crowned him King.”

Politics › You Are Not God, Jonathan Campaigners Tell Obasanjo by Sanchez01(op): 7:26am On Feb 16, 2015
The Peoples Democratic Party Presidential Campaign Organisation has told former President Olusegun Obasanjo to stop playing God over his numerous criticisms of President Goodluck Jonathan.

The organsiation was reacting to the claim by Obasanjo that President Jonathan was planning to perpetuate himself in office.

Apart from this, the former President also accused Jonathan of planning to cause chaos if he lost the March 28 presidential election.

But the Director of Media and Publicity of the organsiation, Chief Femi Fani-Kayode, debunked the allegations, saying the former President under whom he served as Minister of Aviation and Special Assistant on Public Communication, was trying to play God.

Fani-Kayode, who spoke at a press briefing in Abuja on Sunday, accused his former boss of trying in vain to control President Jonathan.

He said the problem between the two members of the ruling party had nothing to do with Nigeria, and called on the former President to leave Nigeria out of the issues between him and the President.

He said, “The bottom line is this: President Obasanjo’s grouse with President Jonathan is personal and it has nothing to do with Nigeria.

“He should leave Nigeria out of it and let us all be. If he has a personal score to settle with Jonathan he should not do so at the expense of the peace and stability of Nigeria.

“If he wants to stop Jonathan then let him attempt to do so through the democratic process and through the ballot box and not through foul and unconstitutional means.

“We said it before and we will say it again: gone are the days that any President can be tele-guided and controlled because we have all come of age.

“We continue to hold President Obasanjo in high esteem but his recent actions and utterances are beyond the pale. He has been unfair to Jonathan, to Nigeria and even to himself.

“Most importantly the days of intimidating others with his harsh words and overbearing influence are long over. Obasanjo is not God.

“Only God is God and He alone determines the fortunes of men and the destiny of nations.”

Fani-Kayode said that after Jonathan came to power, Obasanjo did not only try to control and tele-guide the President, but he also asked him to do a number of things that he said were simply wrong and unacceptable.

Asked to tell Nigerians those issues, he refused. He merely said that the President would speak on the matter anytime he likes.

https://www.nigerianmonitor.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/06/fayose-wins.jpg

Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, has challenged ex-Governor Kayode Fayemi to prove how soldiers rigged the June 21 governorship election in his(Fayose’s) favour.

Speaking with journalists in Ado Ekiti on Sunday, Fayose declared that he was ready to defend himself before a court of competent jurisdiction.

In what seems like a reaction to the interview granted by Fayemi on an Akure, Ondo State-based ADABA 88.9 FM last Thursday, Fayose said Fayemi was only playing to the gallery.

Also, the Peoples Democratic Party in the South-West zone has urged Fayemi to accept that he lost the election because “Ekiti people simply rejected him.”

In a statement in Ado Ekiti by the Publicity Secretary, Mr. Dare Omotosho, the party said “the new angle to the All Progressives Congress propaganda is more like taking an illusion too far and testing the will of Ekiti people and Nigerians.”

Fayose said, “The soldiers should come to give evidence and explain where and how they were instructed to rig the election, whether they were instructed to thumb print ballot papers, or they were instructed to snatch ballot boxes, how many of such ballot papers they thumb printed and the number of boxes they snatched.”

“Fayemi is only playing to the gallery. For those who heard my voice, it was me accusing General Aliyu Momoh of colluding with the All Progressive Congress to rig the election.

“The problem Fayemi is having is the defeat he suffered in the 16 local governments area of the state. He is yet to recover from the shock, and he is fretting over the prospect of going down in political history of Nigeria as the first sitting governor to suffer such monumental defeat.

“The defeat suffered by Fayemi in that election, will in no distant future become a case study by political scholars in Universities across the country.

Fayemi had in the interview said some soldiers were ready to testify in support of the leaked audio file on how chieftains of the Peoples Democratic Party connived with the military to rig the June 21, 2014 Ekiti governorship election.

The audio file released by Sahara Reporters, an online medium, detailed how Fayose, then candidate of the Peoples Democractic Party; a former Minister of State for Defence, Mr. Musiliu Obanikoro; Sen. Iyiola Omisore; Minister of Police Affairs, Mr. Jelili Adesiyan and the military allegedly rigged the poll.

But Fayose said, “All that Fayemi is trying to do is to rubbish election adjudged best by local and international observers.

“I used to have respect for him before now but events after the election has exposed his true colour that he is not a democrat, but a pretender. ‎ If APC doesn’t win, the election is rigged, but once the victory goes their way, it is the most credible election in the world. And these are people claiming to have schooled under Barak Obama.”

Politics › We’ll Prosecute Voters With Fake PVC – INEC by Sanchez01(op): 5:56pm On Feb 15, 2015
Amb. Rufus Akeju, the INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner in Oyo State, says any voter caught with fake Permanent Voter Card during the general elections will be prosecuted.

Akeju, who spoke to the News Agency of Nigeria in Ibadan on Sunday, vowed that INEC would not allow any form of rigging during the elections.

“Any voter who is thinking of voting with a fake PVC during the general elections should shelve the idea now because doing so would land them in jail,” he said.

NAN reports that the presidential and National Assembly elections would hold on March 28 while those of governorship and state Houses of Assembly had been slated for April 11.

The INEC boss also said mechanisms had been put in place by the commission to check rigging and ensure credible elections.

“For example, it impossible for anybody to steal ballot papers in the name of rigging because there cannot be more than 750 ballot papers in any polling unit,” he said.

Akeju also said that a total of 1,563,800 PVCs had been distributed by INEC in the state.

Politics › Bury Tenure Extension Idea, Lawmakers Warn Jonathan by Sanchez01(op): 5:26pm On Feb 15, 2015
Members of the National Assembly have vowed to resist any ploy by President Goodluck Jonathan to extend his tenure by six months on the pretext of insecurity.

There has been speculation since the February elections were shifted that the President is on the verge of sending a tenure extension proposal to the National Assembly, using the insecurity in the North-East as an excuse.

However, senators and members of the House of Representatives, in separate interviews with SUNDAY PUNCH on Friday, said the President should bury the rumoured plan.

On Tuesday, the spokesman of the All Progressives Congress in the Senate, Senator Femi Ojudu, had alleged at a forum that Jonathan had tried to get some members of the National Assembly to elongate his tenure, but that he had so far met a brick wall.

He reportedly spoke in Ibadan, Oyo State at a social discourse organised by the Afenifere Renewal Group, held in honour of a former Ekiti State governor, Kayode Fayemi.

He had said, “President Jonathan has been begging us to allow him do two more years but the Yoruba must cry out and also be strategic in their call for change.

“We are resuming in the next one week and the President might likely bring the proposal for the election to be postponed for the next six months or one year.”

But in separate interviews with SUNDAY PUNCH, lawmakers across political parties called on President Jonathan to jettison the idea, if indeed there was such.

APC caucus leader and minority leader of the House, Mr. Femi Gbajabiamila, dismissed the thought of tenure extension as “baseless and impossible.”

He told one of our correspondents that the idea of tenure extension was strange to him since there were no grounds for it.

“It will not pass; there will be no support for it. There is no point wasting time and energy on that issue,” he said.

The Deputy House Majority Leader, Mr. Leo Ogor, also argued that, tenure extension would not get popular support, and that Jonathan did not have such a plan.

The lawmaker from Delta State added, “Mr. President is running a campaign for his election. What does he need tenure extension for? Is he afraid of elections like the APC, who know they will lose?”

Another lawmaker from Plateau State, Mr. Bitrus Kaze, said members would oppose a tenure extension proposal because the mood of the nation was not prepared for it.

Kaze said, “The mood in the House of Representatives and even the nation right now will not support tenure extension; it will not fly.”

Similarly, a member of the All Progressives Grand Alliance from Imo State, Mr. Eddie Mbadiwe, said any plan to extend the elections by six months would be dead on arrival.

“Nobody will table such a proposal and even if it comes, it will not pass. There is no way anybody will contemplate tenure extension,” he added.

On his part, the Chairman, Senate Committee on National Planning, Senator Barnabas Gemade (APC, Benue North East ), said, “As a democrat who has been the National Chairman of two major political parties in this country in the past, I can never support such an undemocratic arrangement few weeks to a general election that we have been preparing for as a nation for about four years.”

Also, the Chairman, Senate Committee on Ethics and Privileges, Senator Ayo Akinyelure, (PDP Ondo Central) described the alleged tenure elongation plot as “a fallacy, cheap blackmail and an unwarranted allegation to heat up the polity”

Akinyelure said, “Nobody would bring such bill to the National Assembly except if the person is an enemy of democracy.”

A senator from the South West geo-political zone told one of our correspondents in confidence that the plot was real because there were moves by some members of the red chamber to sell the idea to their colleagues before the current break.

He said, “I can confirm to you that the idea of tenure elongation was sold to some of us before we went on break.”

Other senators who corroborated this view, also on conditions of anonymity, noted the idea might come up when the chambers resume on Tuesday.

One of them said, “The real reasons why the election was shifted by six weeks was probably to perfect the tenure elongation saga by using the National Assembly members who would resume next week Tuesday, to execute the plot.”

The senators, however, vowed to resist any attempt to extend the tenure of the current administration beyond the May 29 handover date.

When contacted, the Chairman, Senate Committee on Information, Media and Public Affairs, Senator Eyinnaya Abaribe, said it was not true that the President planned to use the Senate to extend his tenure.

Efforts made to get the reaction of the Peoples Democratic Party were not successful. Calls made to its National Publicity Secretary, Mr. Olisa Metuh, indicated that his telephone line was switched off.

Also, the call made to the party’s Director of Media and Publicity, Mr. Olisa Metuh did not connect.

Goodluck Jonathan... What a man! An audio recording that was forensically analysed in which Obanikoro mentioned that he was sent by the President. Jonathan and corruption are way too synonymous
Politics › Ekiti Audio Leaked Tape Not Real - Goodluck Jonathan by Sanchez01(op):
President Goodluck Jonathan's interview with Wall Street Journal in which he mentioned that the United States should step into the situation of insurgency plaguing the North. While speaking, Goodluck Jonathan stated that he found no reason to probe anyone whether Nigeria's Democracy had been contravened. The opposition claimed the military had been tilted to rig the election but the President feels nothing of such happened as he believes the stories are cooked up... This can be found just at the tail end of the article on Wall Street Journal

... Meanwhile, Mr. Jonathan’s other problems are mounting. The tumbling price of oil has been a shock for this nation, whose government gets 80% of its revenue from crude exports, and saved very little of that money under his watch. On Wednesday, the country’s currency, the naira, hit a record low. Some civil servants have gone unpaid.

Against that backdrop, the president said he was counting on votes from rural Nigeria, where access to fertilizer has become easier under his watch.

“Yes people in the city vote, they make so much noise, but the bulk of the voters come from the countryside,” he said. “For you to know whether I win this election or not, go interview the farmers.”

Mr. Jonathan dismissed other frequently mentioned public concerns. Reports of corruption in the military were exaggerated, as were human-rights abuses, he said. There were few immediate actions needed to clean up the petroleum sector.

The opposition has accused his military of tilting the election his way. Last week, an opposition-leaning website published an audio recording of several military leaders allegedly conspiring to rig a governor’s election that took place in November 2014. A U.S.-based voice-verification firm, Guardian Consulting LLC, confirmed the authenticity of the tape to a 95% accuracy rate.

Mr. Jonathan said he saw no reason to probe whether Nigeria’s democracy had been contravened. “It’s all fabrications,” he said of the audio. “Why should I investigate things that are not real?”

“It’s very sad,” said Kayode Fayemi, the incumbent who lost that election. “The military has lost any democratic control.”

Concerning the 1.5 million people uprooted by BokoHaram, Mr. Jonathan said the government had provided them with enough funding.

“Whenever you have so many people who are displaced there must be stories,” he said. “Even in our small families, some children get hungry sometimes, but that doesn’t mean you’ve not been feeding them.”
