I used to love Keira (I guess I still do) from those "Bend It Like Beckham" and "Love Actually" days. Then she went to the US and the "Anorexic Fashion" kicked in. Hollywoods tends to do that to poeple. This Size Zero craze, it's just bloody ridiculous. Did anyone see Mischa Barton on the cover of Heat Magazine? My Gawd she looks a few feet away from the grave. The quest for extreme skininess is killing some folk and is so mind boggling crazy that it should be actively discouraged.

This is the kind of thing that also gets to me. You are trying to paint a picture of a re-curring occurence. I could go back and bring you the number of such cases that have happened in the UK in the last 20 years but I dont have the time to prove such things. I will never belittle the pain that anyone goes through - I have seen people go through pain(believe me when I say that) and I cant imagine what it feels like. What I dont understand is the need to make it more than it actually is. Adequate presentation does not have to equate inflated and bogus claims.

The only person who's claims are bogus is you. I agree that you do not have the time to prove "such things" [as you put it], because it will take you far longer than the twenty years you stated for you to get evidence that honour killings is not a recurring occurence. In the UK, about 12 women are the victims of honour killings per year. The United Nations Population Fund estimated that the number of deaths which result from Honour killings every year could be as much as five thousand (unfortunately, like Debosky indicated, these kind of killings are not usually publicised by the families of the victims and murderers). If these annual figures are not recurring, I do not know what is.

Try to make the minutest effort to at least educate yourself on subjects before taking a ridiculous stance that clearly shows your lack of knowledge on the subject matter. Here we go again. What has your being British got to do with anything? What exactly do you claim you have seen? How many Afghan women do you know personally? How many have you had in-depth conversations with? What literature on the history and lifestyle of the the Afghan people have you read? I suggest you go back and do your homework. Who is talking about depriving anyone of the right to practise their religion? You need to find out about the way the Afghans lived BEFORE the Taliban took over. The religion they practised before the Taliban rule and the one they practise today are the same religion. Find out how the women dressed back then as well as when all the women started to totally obscure their faces with their burqas and what led to them doing so. Also find out whether all or most Afghan women voluntarily started wearing the burqa or if it was made mandatory. Make an attempt to actually know about things before you come back to tell me some baseless opinion of yours.

Fear of Islamic reprisals (and the effects on public safety) have made the UK Government deny Geert Wilders entry into the United Kingdom because he exercised his rights to freedom of speech. I wonder when the government will realise that this problem will only get worse. There seems a concerted effort to bend over backward to accommodate the dogma of muslims to the detriment of centuries of British beliefs held by UK nationals. People are almost strong armed into swallowing any criticisms that they may have for that religion no matter how concrete such criticisms may be. Any religion that cannot stand up to questions, scrutiny and criticisms should not be allowed to intimidate or threaten the lifestyle of the majority of the populace. The oddity is that criticisms of the Jewish/Hindi/Christian or other faiths seldom bring about such extreme reactions.

Unfortunately, the UK government does not understand that this is a slippery slope they have started on and one by one, the beliefs and values of this society would be eroded in an attempt to bend over backwards to accommodate an arbitrary way of life or religion.

Oh and before I forget Justgood, that argument you put forward (or was it an inference) about the fact that people do not know anyone whose life is in danger is so fatally flawed that I am aghast that you could even type it up, much less hit the send or reply button. I do not personally know one single person who is HIV positive or has died from AIDS (well unless of course they or their family never shared the information), yet I know that millions of people have the AIDS virus and have died from complications arising therefrom. I do not know anyone who died in the 9/11 or 7/7 terrorist attacks, yet I know that thousands of people did die. I could go on and on ^{and on and on and on and on}.

It is this type of your argument that tends to irritate lots of people including myself. Your analogy falls flat on its face, but let me treat it all the same. Do you know how many Nigerians for example want to and try to leave Nigeria? The same for Zimbabweans, Pakistanis etc? MILLIONS. I am sure you know that an escape route is not open to everyone. For goodness sake just a couple of months ago there was even a British resident medical doctor who was forcefully detained and married in Pakistan (or was it Bangladesh). . . she was threatened and held captive by her family, it was the intervention of the British authorities that helped secure her release. In the UK here, honour killings are carried out time after time. Girls even over here who have decided to leave their culture and try to embrace a western or different lifestyle (or boyfriend or husband), are sometimes hunted down and killed (sometimes the boyfriend is as well), so please do not belittle the trauma and danger that these people face just because it strikes a chord at your ego.

What happens in most cases is that a news reporter gets information about a strange that that someone has done and then they report it as what everyone does. Most people thought every woman in Afghanistan did not want to wear that veil that they cover their faces with. however, most of them in Western countries still insist on wearing those veils. my point is that most of these things are about making mountains out of mole hills.

What are you on about? Who says MOST of them do? MOST if given a clear duress free choice do not want to. They might not mind covering their heads, but many have been opressed and threatened into submission. You need to follow Khaled Husseini and his works (not just his books, but his UN work too). He is an Afghan and often speaks of the injustice, opression etc that Afghan women go through, so abeg leave story.

@ debosky, it still boils down to one thing. If women feel so liberated, why do they feel the need to decieve men with virginity? I am not referring to anyone whose life might be at stake as a result (I'm sure thats an extreme possibility you included to buttress your argument).

If a woman's life is not at risk for not being a virgin and she decides, that she should have such an operation in order to please a man, she is inadvertently saying that she is bowing to the man's wishes (although deceptively). Whichever way you look at it, a woman who claims to be extremely independent should never be doing this. This is nothing but an admission of being subject to the desires of a man.

Unfortunately your argument is flawed. Let us ignore the life threat issue (which alongside psychological concerns has actually been recorded as the predominant reason for carrying out this hymen operation), a woman doing an operation to "please" a man does not amount to an admission that she is subject to the desires of a man. Not at all; it is an admission however that she is aware that in as much as the world has moved on in leaps and bounds, we are still far from sexual uhuru and men still dominate things. Thus, such women from those cultures have found what they consider is the perfect solution in these present times i.e. carry on exactly as they wish and let the fool who cannot handle this fact (who wants a virgin) think otherwise. In other words, they are eating their cake and having it too. If they were "subject[ing]" themselves to the "desires" of men, they will not have had any pre-marital sex whatsoever. It is done in much the same manner like lots of female teenagers back in Naija have sex but actively promote an image or a front of innocence and virginity to their parents, because they know that being that way pleases their parents and their lives would be much pleasant if those parents were kept in their little cuckoo world. The fact that those girls hide their active sexual lives from their parents or overtly deceive them does not stop them being much more liberated than their counterparts a century ago. Would you say that those men who have affairs and children out of wedlock and hide this from their wives are "subjecting" themselves to the desires of their wives because they have lied and gone to great painful lengths to be deceptive about these affairs and children? Surely, the very proposition is ludicrous. It is basically the same principle when women talk to their boyfriends or husbands about their past sexual partners i.e. So many men cannot handle large numbers, so the women cut the figure down. If the guys continue to have ridiculous expectations and/or can't handle the truth, they will continue to be fed lies until women achieve equality in all aspects of life.

Thus, at the end of the day, these women are operating in mainly uncharted waters and have found a way to circumvent the nuisance of some men's ridiculous requests or the expectations of virginity as a badge to be worn. These women (from those nationalities that are affected) can have it all, they can sleep with whosoever they like, yet marry someone respectable that they want to (who though he is more than likely to have shagged about himself, does not want his wife to have done so) So the man wants a hymen? For goodness sake give him one. LOL grin

The South African Centre of International PEN (SA PEN) is pleased to announce the finalists for the 2009 PEN/Studzinski Literary Award.

The award for original short stories in English by African authors attracted an unprecedented 827 entries, 625 of which met with the rules of entry. Just under 200 stories were longlisted, and 34 stories were chosen as finalists by the PEN Editorial Board comprising Shaun Johnson (Chair), Anthony Fleischer, Justin Fox, Harry Garuba, Alistair King and Mary Watson. Nobel Laureate JM Coetzee is currently judging the shortlisted stories and will choose the winners of the first (£5 000), second (£3 000) and third (£2 000) prizes. The winners will be announced in May 2009. (Details regarding the announcement will be posted on www.sapen.co.za in due course.) The finalists'?? stories will be included in an anthology of new writing from Africa to be published later this year.

I like Chimamanda Adichie's writing. About Biafra and Nigeria when she was yet unborn. However I think you guys here are not helping anybody, especially yourselves. Wetin Naija gals dey think sef? Although I've downloaded his BLACK BOOK and think he has it in him to be the best in his writing (Fascinating book for kids, but only one Nigerian character doesn't help this country!
