McTobe: Your thread, a waste of time? Hmmm well just know that on the road to your success in life many will discourage and even smite you but your ability to remain focused is what matters most. For anyone that says that your thread is not worth it there are many more that are more grateful even if they may not come here and write it down. Example I referred one of my guy and my cousin that is a civil Engineer to the thread, that my friend developed a rough sketch of his bill of quantity from this thread just like I did. Everything I know today about building started here and from here I started widening my scope. Keep your efforts up your impact is unquantifiable. Remain Blessed some day in the future I will encourage you with one job or the other because I am sure that there are many more houses for me to build. GOD Bless and Strengthen you. THANKS SIR......... I so appreciate your words this morning...... God bless you more, amen to everything too..... |

McTobe: @saydfact I have to come back to this thread to thank you for creating this thread. My journey to building my own small place started here. I was here the day this thread was created as a result of the suggestion that you should create a thread for low income earners as against the first you created which was for bigger guys, and I read every post and contribution as if I was studying a spiritual book. I kept coming back and again. Even when I started my house I have to keep coming back. I will be parking to my house next week and it all started with the inspiration from here and my wife’s continuous push and encouragements. Thank you @saydfact and all the contributors to this thread, if I am called upon any time I will also drop some of my experiences in building this little place. Cheers WAOH.......... easily the greatest compliment I've gotten here - offcourse, I get a lot of compliments here, on WhatsApp and mail... BUT NONE has been as inspiring as yours... THANK-YOU for proofing many who claim my tread is a waste of time wrong..... God bless you, wife and family. Let's also appreciate Seun, Lalasticlala, Lawyer and other modes for the opportunity... GOD BLESS YOU MORE |

clefstone: KIDfurniture:
Don't be limited - You both surprise reasoning...
Where I work, a QS begs me to do these calculations for her, the carpenters on site preparing cost estimate beg to learn how, the contractor who is trying to win a contract needs to know how his carpenter arrived on his cost, so he knows what to submit to the client.
@ KIDfurniture: you said u have a good roofer, I want to believe if he gives you a quote of N100 naira (eg) for a job, you just submit it straight to ur clients without having knowledge if its high or low cost...
Sometimes its always good to keep quiet, if you have nothing sensible to type.... don't take it as an offense, its an advice.
and you won't be advertising roof if I didn't do a roof tread - wld you? |

AyeMaDaFunMi: is it less expensive to go with a tiled roof or use concrete slab?
I like the look of flat roofs, but I think it’s less expensive to use a tiled roof.
Is it possible to use a tiled roof on a slighted sloped void? I think this will give the look of a flat roof but will use tiled. Easier to maintain and longer lasting. Concrete roofs are more expensive and have a higher maintenance need/cost... if the slope isn't high enough, tiled roof isnt advisable - stick with long span. thanks |

Rubbiish: I disagree! It is necessary considering the standard of our blocks. Both lintel & beam are made of same elements, concrete & reinforcement, their usage is what differentiates the two, it is same material. the dictionary definition of both.. Lintel = a horizontal support of timber, stone, concrete, or steel across the top of a door or window. Beam = A beam is a structural element that primarily resists loads applied laterally to the beam's axis. Its mode of deflection is primarily by bending. you dont have to agree sir, a car is a car and a bus is a bus.. Thanks boss |

AyeMaDaFunMi: Reading through your post has been very educational @saydfact. Thank you.
I have 2 questions I hope you will entertain.
1. Is there any cost savings in laying plumbing pipes prior to pouring concrete? Would require precise measurements to ensure pipes for toilets, showers, etc. are in the correct locations.
2. I've been thinking about another approach for columns. It will be difficult to describe so hopefully you'll catch what I'm describing.
Instead of forming the column by placing blocks on 2 sides and then securing planks on the remaining 2 sides, would there be cost savings in placing the blocks in a pattern so that the re-bar goes through the blocks and then pour concrete into the opening? Thanks for the compliments... well appreciated. no1. The piping system depends on how much client is willing to spend, and design. whether the conduit system (pipes b4 concrete etc) or surface system, the cost difference on small buildings isn't much - it is however more expensive to lay conduit than surface on very big buildings. to answer your question; its not cheaper to lay conduit pipes (surface is cheaper to run and maintain too) no2. The problem of having the rebar go through the blocks is that the columns would like be too small to support the building, What carries the structure are NOT the rebars only but a combination of rebars and concrete cover...... so, please stick with the conventional method Goodluck |

Rubbiish: But chain lintel is better if he is not doing parapet? chain lintel is NOT necessary - its almost a waste of fund except you can afford it, LINTEL is NOT same as BEAM. |

joycluv: Plz what is the rationale behind selling tiles per square meter instead of per piece? Again, how do you measure and then cut out one square meter of tile? The standard unit of measurement in Architecture, building, and engineering is in meters (metric) - used to be feet and inches. The measurement/cutting of 1m2 of tiles depends on the tile size you're using. |
