You can only use 12mm for lintels and slab...

Columns and Beams must be minimum 16mm - no alternative to that.

My oga I owe you one. I was able to use that particular design and have it modified into something bigger. It really came in handy at the time. But I must say I couldn't keep costs down try as I might.

There is nothing wrong with using 3 bars in a lintel - just make sure it's 12mm iron (minimum) you are using...

Hi... The irons are about 750mm long and in this particular pics, the spacing is about 450mm apart.

Size of iron can be 10mm or 12mm.

Just like your highlighted project, polystyrene was used to reduce weight and cost in the multi storey carpark. There was a water main burst and the whole carpark was flooded. As you know, polystyrene will float above water, thereby pushing upward the floor of the carpark crushing cars between two floors.

The second set of photos, Taiwan.

The contractor used cooking oil tins to save cost of properly casting columns for a hotel complex. He succeeded until there was a relative minor earthquake and the complex crumbled like a pack of cards.

Be encouraged to design and build structures that will stand the test of time. Cutting corners in the name of innovation often over time reveal what it was: cutting corners.

Sir... Permit me to jump on this, your reply to Teewhy2.

In your 1st example, the polystyrene wasn't the problem, the plumbing and drainage system is... You can't blame a collapsed structure due to poor concrete mix on the reinforcement bars used if it was adequate and well designed.

No2. You talked about earthquake and still fine a way to blame it on the design.. What do we blame if a conventional concrete structure Collapses? On cement and Rebar, type of wood..

Lastly, if a steel structure Collapses in Abeokuta how those that make steel as use for building bad?

FYI.. Polystyrene floors are MORE expensive than conventional concrete and iron floors... polystyrene isn't a cheaper alternative most times.

We had similar use for polystyrene at a building in Ogun State where the gallery was to be filled with same material to reduce weight as the structural engineer didn't design for that weight in mass concrete...

Excuse my grammatical blunders. I just feel like sharing this experience i had with my fiancee to be....

Yesterday being sunday, I decided to fix a movie and fun outing with my girl. I ordered a taxi from my base to her base to pick her up. She came looking fine and sweet to enjoy the sunday with...To cut the long story short to the main reason i'm posting this....

I came out of the taxi from the FRONT SEAT gave her a hug and opened the back door for her then closed the door to go back to my normal position, She gave me a bad look from nowhere, i asked her what's wrong, she told me to come to the back, the driver could hear us clearly, i playfully told her baby don't worry we have all day together u are even gonna spend the night at my crib, i sat at d front and told the taxi to go to the cinema. During the trip to the cinema i had a little conversation with the taxi guy, from nowhere again my lady told the taxi guy in a rude voice 'please oga face your driving and stop shaking me driving into potholes anyhow abeg'...later on again she told the taxi man to totally put off the low radio station that was playing in the car, the last time he had a call and received it on Bluetooth o,she shouted then very rude telling the man please just drop that call. That's when i cautioned her to take it easy na.

We arrived at the cinema, she told me i should give her transport to go back home that she doesn't feel like staying out again...I tried to pet her,she just abandoned me took a taxi and went home. She has refused picking my calls since yesterday. Im busy at work weekdays,i dont really have time to go to her house.

Ladies/Gentlemen please where did i really go wrong

Roofing would cost you about 600k on low budget
ceiling shd run into 150k minimum
Windows and Doors would cost you 600k on low budget (about 10 doors and 10 casement windows)
Tiling can't be less than 300k (Tiles, material, and labour)
Mech and Electrical should be around 500k (with quality Nigerian cable; DO NOT use inferior wires. Zero compromises)
Painting about 150k on low budget

There would offcourse be a lot of smaller tasks to deal with...

MY ADVICE: Don't waste the 2m thinking it's too small to achieve something; it can achieve a lot - Just roof the building and use the balance for internal works, as much as it can take.

NOTE: I did this with the assumption that you have done the concrete flooring, and there is plastering of about 300k too...

The answer is YES.... but before demolishing the door space to introduce the door or window, you also have to introduce a lintel

see sketch below.
pics1 - open a space (A) wider than the door or window width and place a precast lintel into it
pics2&3 - once the lintel is well secured and cemented (next day) - open the door and/or window (B/C) space.
