Very sad story. I personally know a woman facing same issue too. She is still a nurse in US. She decided to invest in Nigeria. She was sending money home to her own blood, her nephew to help her buy the land, construct and build a befitting edifice. For those of us abroad we understand better what it means to work, pay taxes, and all the bills and then have a little left to save. To save money here is not so easy. Yet she saved for years and sent this money home. Her nephew with the naija mentality that everyone abroad is swimming in money swindeled this lady. I mean her hard earned money of many years all gone! The guy used the money and built a place for himself with her money. After spending many years abroad she decided to inspect her building because based on her calculation the building ought to be finished. Lo and behold this guy not only barred her from entering, he fixed all documents of the house in his own name. I mean from the land, to all reciepts of building materials used were in his name. Frustrated she dragged him to court. This case has been in court for many years. Each time there is a court case this poor lady leaves America, pays her flight ticket plus other expenses. Sometimes she needs to appear several times a year. Just imagine the waste of money. There is still no headway till now. Our judiciary system of court adjournments makes things even worse. But the frightening part is her nephew stood on the podium looked her in the eye and said she never sent him any money |
Oye50:Yes now you're talking! Am not fighting you my brother no. This advice you gave here is what I want more people to come here and say. Germany is not a land of milk and honey. According to international student office, you are allowed to spread your courses more than the normal stipulated time but not more than 3 extra semesters. If you go to the Rathaus in my city for visa extension they will ask questions. My ISO told me this.Am sure its obtainable in some cities too. Some cities you go for visa renewal they bring out calculator and divide 670 by how much you have left in your account. Some students here their visas have expired without money to renew. They are running from pillar to post. They dont come to Nairaland to say it. Even as much as we paint nice pictures let's also tell them the other side so they know what's really going on here and make decisions. Talking about Munich, if your brother is so blessed to get an affordable place doesn't mean others are. Generally speaking most people in Munich find it very hard to get accommodation and when they do it is very expensive. I know 2 guys paying 600€ per month for a room yet they share toilet and kitchen with about 8 or more other tenants. In my city a room in a flatshare goes for 250€ or more. Even some up to 320€ but I pay less than 200€ for a self contained which is very rare to find. Will I now come here to say rent is less than 200€ in my city when I know its a very rare occurrence? |
Oye50:You claimed you worked to have big amount of savings in your account meanwhile you work weekends and spare time. How much do you earn from mini jobs and still have unbelievable huge amount of money in your account with the cost of living and bills to pay? How much have you saved for less than six months that you have been in Germany to be able to have huge savings? Or are you referring to the money in the blocked account which was already in your bank before you came? Quote me anywhere you cant work mini jobs and save to have huge amount of money. I am not the kind of person to paint rosy pictures. I say things the way they really are. I don't come to German thread to deceive people about Germany. What pains me is; we in Germany that post this things don't realise that there are people back home in Nigeria who read this thread and make life changing decisions. I know people who resigned decent jobs back home because people paint this wonderful picture of Germany to them. They get here and its a totally different thing from what they read here. I see people bitting their fingers, regretting their decisions. I talk based on numerous people I have come across here in different cities and states in this country. I will always say it without fear or favour nobody should resign their job to come to Germany thinking there is money to pick here. If you truly want to study fine. |
Jumoke is georgeous. Wow |
uboma:If you are fascinated by a woman just because she drives a taxi then you must be living in the stone ages. Some years ago in Port Harcourt Ameachi's wife flagged ESI taxi scheme for women. They were women all over Port Harcourt driving Taxis. Maybe you just need to travel more to see that its not a big deal anymore. |
LordSlytherin:My brother any how the inflation in Nigeria dey, 4 finger of banana no go cost 1.99 euro. lets say we use 300 per euro, omo na 600 naira for just 4 fingers of banana be that o. For goodness sake I bought 1 card of paracetamol for 4.35 euro meanwhile the same paracetamol, same no of tablets, same work; its not more than 50 naira. Just yesterday I went to a shop in my city to by an item. This very same item costs 26$ in US if I order it. Meanwhile standing here in this shop in Germany I was asked to pay 57 euros but here in Germany its bills, bills ,bills! The money runs away with speed ![]() Some people say don't use converter to reduce your BP but i just cant stop comparing ![]() |
There are many women here in my city in Germany driving intra city trams, trains and long buses. Its a normal everyday thing. If you even need to car pool to another state there are countless female drivers advertising for passengers and to drive you for a fee. If you look inside the beautiful taxis here you see female drivers driving them. The DHL trucks here you see women smartly dressed in their uniforms making deliveries. I dont get the fuss about a female taxi driver in Nigeria. I really dont ![]() |
Oye50:Oye you are right with what you are saying but let me disagree a bit. Weekend and spare time jobs cannot give you a fat bank account balance. Especially not with the very high cost of things in this country and the pay from mini jobs. I spread my courses too but there is a disadvantage to spreading it too wide though. IMHO seven extra semesters is long. My ISO told me that if you spend more than 3 extra semesters and you go for visa renewal the Auslander may ask questions. It may depend on your Auslander behorde's rules though. Going to a good economic state is good but you have to balance it with a city that also offers cheaper living. I know cities like Munich offer more economic opportunities + I have seen Germans themselves relocating there to search for jobs but the problem is the cost of living in Munich is high. Rent alone will finish your 670 without anything to sustain on. A normal room with shared toilet and bathroom will go for 500,600 or even 700 per month. That city's rent is outrageous. With a student mini job it will be tough. This country is so expensive. I bought 4 fingers of banana for 1.99€ The same banana wey no go pass 100naira for Naija. ![]() I would advice anyone coming to apply for accomodation with studentenwerk. Many of them are cheaper than paying normal rent in your cities. Trick is once your accommodation is cheap, everything falls into place. |
I experienced worse brutality growing up as a kid. I lived with different relatives. I have no words to express the terror i went through but I really thank God for seeing me through it all. I don't blame anyone treating people's kids like this. Its the 2 people who came together, had a kid and couldn't leave up to their responsibility. Why would anyone bring a child into this world without any plans in place for such children? This is what you get when you live your children at the mercy of strangers. They do whatever they like, they treat the child the way the want. I feel sorry for the boy. And I hope he comes out tough and successful. But his folks are to blame IMHO |

You want to come to Germany to hustle with tourist visa? You are cannot work with that visa. Nobody will employ without a valid permit. Here people follows rules not like Nigeria. Plus they will be fined if they employ you. Don't try it. Stay back andncome here legal |
bigtt76:My dear sister, I had the exact same thoughts. Olajumoke should be in this kinda events too. |
Plumcherry:No the nice scent on the pads they sell here abroad cannot be harmful. No my Dear. Its the same products we had in Niaja but they make it more nicer. The cotton wool I buy here to is so soft and silky. I don't even feel like I am wearing anything. If you are in Naija you can try big supermarkets like Spar etc. Maybe you can Buy one at a time till you get the right one for you. |
For me, I use soft cotton wool first then lay my panty with a pad that has wings to secure it in place. So its pad on panty then cotton wool on pad. The pad I buy here is perfumed so no funny odours. Then the cotton wool is long and smooth. No fear of leakages. |
coachwilcox:Gut, danke. Und ihnen? |
Aww I still have fond memories of Yankari. Visited when I was in primary school. Like 18 years ago. I remember the spring filled with many whites and thier kids. Then the north was very safe. No boko haram, no kidnapping. The food was intercontinental. Every race could eat from the restaurant. I will never forget the baboons . They stole our chin chin from our car and were eating it right in front of us.I would love to experience Yankari again. |
The worst thing that can happen to anyone is to be sick and as you're fighting the illness and hoping you get better, then at the same time you are also thinking of where to source for funds to settle your medical bills. It is this worst kind of challenge any body who falls sick can experience. Sometimes you can't even go to the hospital on time when the sickness starts to show up. Because you don't have the money to foot your bills. The government should wake up and do as other western countries are doing. Nigeria needs urgent health insurance policy. Its not reasonable to pay Cash for treatments. With insurance you have little worries about your medical bills. That's how its done over here. Here I pay my monthly premium to my insurance company. That's my only duty. When I am sick, without fear, I go to the hospital, Insurance pays the bills, I only pay 10€ per day for the number of days I remain in the hospital. Now that's nothing compared to the thousands of euros I would have had to pay the hospital if I didn't have insurance. If Lola had insurance she wouldn't have been sick and looking for money for transplant. Her insurance would have easily covered all or most part of the bills. This is beyond painful to me that in 2016 Nigerians still need to seek for money whenever they fall ill. This is beyond painful. I weep for Nigeria. I weep for every Lola in Nigeria going through this When will my country get better? When? |
nasha1:There has never been a terrorist attack in Germany. Nobody sleeps under the bridge here. Asylum seekers live in good homes provided free by the government. I have one of such homes very close to my house. Beautiful duplex for about 4 or 5 of them. I can close work by 2,3am midnight and walk the streets of Germany at that time without a single fear in the world. No pickpockets, no robbers, no ritualists. Trains and other means of transportation working effectively even at odd hours. |
EfemenaXY:Oh God!! Shot dead?! Nigeria is my country. Its tough making money abroad. But I can never regret relocating abroad. Whenever I complain my Man will quickly remind me that I should never forget my luck in this this country. . eople. I agree with Bebe, our attitude is our major issue. |
Williamso:What do people post on NL?! The Auslander will find out and invite you to their office for questioning. I personally know a naija guy who was questioned and warned. Its against your visa rules. Because for you to earn 2,000€ monthly you're are definitely working full time. Full time jobs are only allowed during few months during the holidays. For the 450€ mini jobs you have to bear in mind that your rent, insurance and other bills may add up to be more than that 450€ so what do you now do? Even if you have cheap rent the cost of living here is very expensive. This I want to come and huslte spirit get it off your mind. Don't have a criminal record. Manage the little you can make, get good grades. Master your course very well. Sharpen your skills. Try and hustle get good research or internship placement. All to garner experience on your field. So when you get to the job market after graduation, you have something reasonable to present to the HR. Then you can get the money rolling in but definitely not now as a student. |
Op I feel your pain. I am so sorry you're going through this. Such is life. You will get through this pain and betrayal with time. |
Throughout my long stay in Germany never for once have I seen the poster of any government official ranging from smallest up to the Chancellor Merkel either on the road, offices or anywhere. I Yet they do their jobs and the reasons for being elected effectively. |
Bottom line is, I am not trying to scare anyone but those are the challenges of an average student plus real experiences of some nairaland guys I personally met here. No one will be abroad and want to paint this kind of picture. No one wants to be laughed at. Some come here and say something totally different from what they pass through. I know some Nairaland guys already making applications to change schools. Reasons being the course is too hard (tougher than they imagined) some because the city doesn't give them what they planned on (few jobs to hustle) and that's what most come for. Some have failed out of school. They won't come here to say all this. Still want come? This are some of the challenges but you got to be very brave and strong in mind and body to brave the odds. |
will most likely eat most of what you can make. Target from 200€ for monthly rent and be ready to share kitchen, toilet and bathroom with others. I have seen students in some major cities pay 500€ monthly just for a room in a flatshare. You want self contained? Rare and far more expensive. Then you got to pay your insurance. Don't take crappy insurance because its cheap. When you fall sick then you know what you did to yourself. Some are around 30, but also expect within 30 - 160€. Most pay around 80€. Get your calculator and start converting. Cheap city rent all bills inclusive 250€, insurance 80€, feeding(cook by yourself and pack lunches), toiletries, recharge library card, recharge internet for phone, internet for house, let's say 120€. Your city will determine your expenses but my calculation hits 400€ monthly in a moderate city maybe in the north. So you see that 450€ you were happy about, its returning to pay bills. If your school doesn't offer semester ticket or only limited ticket sorry. Transportation in Germany is unbelievably expensive! Imagine paying 2.60€ bus, 5€ train about 500 naira for very short distance. Same distance that won't cost up to 100naira in Naija. Visa renewal: when you arrive, everything depends on your city. Many cities in Germany, when you go to extend your visa from initial 3 months they bring out calculator and check your bank balance. Depending on what you have in it they divide by 670. Many people got 8 months, some 1year. Take it as luck if your city can issue you 2 years. But keep an open mind. Some Auslander behorde are strict. Okay, you got 1year, and the following year to renew you got to have another 8,000€. Lol. You cannot have 8,000€ sitting in your account doing nothing. How much do you make to even save that amount within a year? When there are mandatory expenses to be made? Some students are running helter shelter cos of this. Some are running everywhere looking for someone to help with sponsorship letter. Hardly will you find someone willing to stand for you with that letter. There are legal implications for that should anything go wary. No one wants to mess with the law. Getting passport though Citizens: I have travelled from north to south of Germany and I say with all sincerity that I have not been able to count up to 10 black and white couples. Generally here couples go out together a lot. They are always seen together. Why don't I see a black girl and a white guy together or a black guy and a white woman together? That is because it was in the past that it was easier to get a white into marriage. Now its harder. Don't count on coming to marry oyinbo and get passport. You may search and search, try and try but it ain't leading no where. BTW if you succeed marrying them or having a baby with them getting the passport is not automatic. Takes some years and not so straight forward as you thought. I personally know a guy who has a baby with German citizen Na when pikin don reach 10 years them finally give am passport. Just keep an open mind. Don't let anyone lie to you. Don't allow anyone paint beautiful stories. Don't be moved by pictures they snap beside fine buildings, fine cars ( not theirs), fine clothes. Don't leave your job, your business, apply for one crappy course just so you can get in. You will regret it. My guy sends things from Germany. OK. Used things? Grade one tokunbo? Those things are for free ! People put up ads on eBay, shpock and give things they don't need for free here. Some are in really good condition. He sends it to Naija and you think, my guy don hammer. The one who comes home throwing money around as if there's no tomorrow, chances are they are into something dirty and illegal. |
People get there visa and no one hears from them anymore? People in the past paint glory pictures of Germany to you? Let me tell you the hard truth. If you're coming to Germany because you truly want to study that particular course and you have financial back up in Nigeria, Come! You are welcome to Germany If you intend to borrow your blocked account money to come to Germany to study, forget it! It will take you years to pay back that loan. You will be frustrated when your debtors will start to call you except you have no conscience and don't intend to pay back as agreed. You have seen posts of 8.50€ per hour minimum wage and 450€ per month mini job and you brought out your calculator and you totalled it to be over 100k per month! And you thought to yourself, I will hammer in Germany. Sorry. Forget that Naija mentality where you are sure of a certain amount every month. Not here. Majority of jobs for students is 'as it comes'. Meaning today your agent may call you, tomorrow and next no work for you. Basically there's hardly any permanent job that you can depend on. You need to keep looking out for new jobs. Here, say you get an agent, they send you to clean people's homes, wash plates, carry load, packaging, baby sit, and other menial jobs (forget suit and tie), you can't even be sent to work everyday. Its against your visa rule. No company will hire you for 30 days straight (except holiday jobs during just few months of holidays). Do you know what it means to leave your house sometimes 4am to go to work? Sometimes you return from work 2am? Be ready to work at odd hours. The cold here is brutal. Imagine entering into a deep freezer everyday. Sometimes its even colder than your freezer. During winter you can get -16°c. Brutal cold with wind and ice block falling on you from the sky. Passing through that so you can eat and pay bills. Everything thing you make goes to expenses. Germany is a very expensive country. When you convert basic things you normally buy cheaply in Nigeria to the price in euros you will cry. Imagine buying small plastic rubber to store something in the fridge that will cost nothing more than 100 naira for 2pcs and you buy only 1pc for 1€. Everything thing is at least double the price in Naija. Some are far more expensive. It means that the high amount you make goes back to spending. Now get this, depending on the city you live in, your house rent |
but here in Germany its bills, bills ,bills! The money runs away with speed
