I cannot blame Tinubu, he does know Nigerian politics and knows that a lot of people from certain regions would prefer to vote for Jonathan than him just based on ethnic lines. What does 'Yoruba' even mean?

Yoruba people tend to use Yoruba anytime they are talking to connect words there is not a large surplus of words to use to connect clauses and phrases. So Yoruba keep saying Yoruba (when/then) continuously and igbo people find it funny. They use it as a derogatory term, but I find it funny because its true. I used to remember when I write essays I use it a lot. Also its Yoruba is more commonly used by people who are not really good at speaking yoruba anyways.

If not for ethnic bigotry, ploiticians wouldn't be able to practice corruption on the industrial scale that applies in 9ja. The masses too have fallen head first for the trick, so each ethnic group wants their man at the centre at FG level. It trickles down to LG level with each village wanting their man as chairman.

i dont get you chain of events, but I would point out that ethnic bigotry is just a tool in the hands of politicians towards the ultimate goal. That does not mean that they cannot exploit other ways to get to their goal of stealing from the nigerian treasury. The issue is tackling the concept of "free money in abuja" and corruption since tackling the tools might be ineffective since politicians will find one way or the other to get what they want.

Politics is all about dirty talk. I can remember here quite vividly that people were clamoring for the death of Yar'adua shamelessly ignoring the fact that this man has a family too and they have feelings too. A) you can be a mediocre GPA engineering student and still get a high-paying job (I know plenty of kids who did this.)
B) For most other degrees, this is not the case. 3.0 in sociology => not much better job than flipping burgers
C) If you are a high gpa engineering student, you can get the sweet finance/consulting gigs too.

Funny I know a naija guy with a 3.0 who got a job in an BB IB with a degree in sociology. Definitely not flipping anything. I kind of hear you on the do something professional, but still its still the way Nigerians think (All of them actually no matter where they are from)

Fine, but these are jobs available to every major, not just math/physics students. Anyway, if you are a pure math/physics kid at a top school with a good gpa and some CS courses, you can also work at an elite company like Google, FBook or Microsoft. Thing about engineering is that you can have a mediocre gpa (e.g., 3.0ish) and still get a nice job. I dunno any mediocre GPA mathematicians or physicists who get McK, Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley, etc.

Well thats because engineering might be also hard. Some engineering jobs are not limited to engineers and physicist and chemistry can also work as engineers after a year of training.

No mediocre student regardless of major gets McK, Goldman or MS (though the students who get jobs at MS or Goldman are not necessarily intelligent, maybe a bit above average in the intelligent group but yes on McK).

Also bros u dey play wuruwuru, engineering companies are less focussed on GPA and more on work experience and coops and getting a mediocre GPA in engineering is not even easy. Engineering is supposed to be hard (So I have heard though from the little I know of it, it seems like easy peasy to me).

Finance, consulting, Human resources, publishing company, sales rep, marketing tons of stuff. If the student is connected and na oyibo they can even land private equity sef. No you dont need to. You could still study pure mathematics and get a job on wallstreet. Infact if you study pure mathematics or physics at a top 15 school and have a GPA of over 3.5 every BB and consultancy firm will be fighting for you. Most people who study mathematics have an easier time getting into finance than business or finance majors. Mathematicians are highly sought after especially in sales and trading.

Most people I know who major in math end up in finance. I even know a kid who did biology and ended up in one of the best boutique firms in finance (in a more desirable position than IBD). The guy had published two papers by hthe time in his junior year.

In naija it is very different. Yes better study engineering or medicine if u wanna survive sha.

Studying pure math is dangerous, unless you are very good at math. The jobs prospects for a mediocre mathematician aren't really that great. Same for physics and neuroscience. . . probably become a high school teacher or something. Which pays terribly.

But then again I have more anecdotes about mediocre mathematicians getting really good jobs especially in actuary and pulling in lots of dough.

This is a separate issue. If a parent is silly enough to force their not-particularly-bright kid into something academically challenging, probably will not work out to well. So I'm assuming that the parent has identified the strengths/weaknesses of their kid. Your point is probably that most Nigerian parents don't do a good job with this strength/weakness part. You might be right about that; I wouldn't know.

But assuming that the parent has taken this factor into account, they are often the best person to advise their child on a career.

The issue here is that most Nigerian parents will force their kids into medicine even if the kid is as dumb as a brick because they believe medicien would provide a better future for him or her. They cannot see how studying international relations could ever be useful or political science believing such a person would remain jobless. I see this like everyday lol.

Disagree strongly with the above. Knowing what you like or don't like isn't enough. What is more important is how much things pay. If you like something that pays a bad salary. . . well, you'd better pick something that you like a little bit less but that pays more.

Parents know how much things pay from hearing from their friends and acquaintances. How do you expect a recent Nigerian immigrant to say the US or Europe to have a more solid grasp of what pays and how the system works relative to their kids. Most Nigerian parents in the US for example might not know or understand that a Sociology major at say Duke might have better opportunities than an engineering major at say a very good engineering school like UT Austin.

It depends. The big-name companies offer pretty decent starting compensation, 65k+ or so iirc. I agree, the increase in salary over time doesn't compare to something like investment banking or finance related careers.

It really depends on how much money you want. The prestige of engineering is pretty high though.

To whom lol? A lot of engineers are now working as contractors and cannot find jobs. Most developed economies are outsourcing their engineering fwork to other countries and most engineers have to be versatile. Engineering is definitely not seen as prestigious- maybe to Nigerians yes but the field is dying a slow and painful death.

Nothing really. Engineering has the highest salary. However you have to take future compensation into question. Even Doctors in the US except they do something like cardiovascular surgery dont make that much and when they hit the high income bracket they get taxed like mad.

Yeah well IBD jobs pay a lot out of college, but then like you have to keep on moving around. Infact this whole rant I am making is because I just talked to a friend yesterday who spent 6 months looking for a trading job and found one  and when he found it, his nigerian parents managed to convince him that medicine is a more stable job because he would have to first do the analyst stint and might not even move up to associate- since very few people are selected to move towards being an associate.

To be an engineer in America, you must really love what you do. The pay sucks. My advisor constantly told me not to go in for the salary, that if we dont enjoy the major, we should switch asap. I quickly switched to gymnastic. Glory be to God in the highest.

Engineering doesnt pay much o, nothing at all.

In Nigeria it pays a lot if you can crack an oil company. The pay in naija is just atrocious if you can get a top-level job in an oil compnay . In the US the salary is great but you hit a ceiling except you move into management. If you are studying engineering definitely put an MBA or MEM (Masters in Engineering Management) in your list of things to do in the future. That is my iyawo, thinking of how to pay the bills with her husband.

Thats the Nigerian thinking- parents thinking they know more than their kids. If someone studies what they are not good at they are likely to be jobless more than someone who studies what they are passionate about and excel in that field.

Kids at 16-17 dont wander aimlessly, most have a good idea of what they want to do and what they like to study. Yes, they might not be thinking of career prospects now, but they know what they like and what they dont like. What I have a problem with is parents making their kids study medicine, engineering or law when those kids dont like it or do not enjoy it. So they spend the rest of their life hating stuff they study.

Medicine/law/Engineering is not for everyone and most of these people could have been better off studying pure mathematics or physics/neuroscience or even gasp history or political science

fstranger has not sat for the USMLE yet, dont you guys jave march day or whatever that is called. One of my good friends (about 5+ years older than me) who goes to Wash U med though did not do too well in the USMLE so it must be a pretty difficult exam.

How do I know that she is not a scientist? Are you kidding me? No Nigerian university train scientists, having an MBBS doesnt make you a scientist overnight. You can get your PHD in soft disciplines like Sociology, political science and the rest, but Ph.D. is hardcore science? no Nigerian university is equipped to do that. I stand corrected.

Its not that hard for a smart nigerian with an MBBS to learn everything you need to do research. She did residency so she might have learned some stuff in between or worked in a lab. Trust me first class Nigerians could within a year reach the same academic levels as an MIT undergrad. As I have said previously, its more about the IQ curve and where you place on that curve as opposed to your education.

My college professor spent 7 years in a  Genetics program before he became a geneticist. I am very sure that she does not operate the lab alone. I am almost 100% sure that she operates the lab with a basic scientist, without which she would be clueless on a lotta stuff.

I differ, yes your CP might have spent 7 years completing a PhD but that does not mean after year 2 to three he was not knowledgeable about tons of stuff. Its just that he took time to complete his work. I think a well trained doctor could learn all she needs to know about genetics research in a year max.

And also, her area off focus is not just the AA populace alone, she also goes to Nigeria and collaborates with people over there, giving her edge over other people in the US. She has contacts in Nigeria and a lotta guineapigs who obviously are poor Nigerians that are mostly ignorant of their rights, hence, easily manipulatable. I have nothing against her,  she is doing what most White people would not touch.  After all, there are more people suffering from sickle cell than cystic fibrosis, but we know more about cystic fibrosis than SS for reasons well known to us all.

Also how do you know she is not a scientist and just a clinician? Anyways most Doctors are not the bestest researchers except they do that MD/PhD thingy or go through an MSTP program. If she is a cancer geneticist she probably works a lot on BRCA1 and BRCA2 gene mutations in which african american women are more susceptible to.
