Are they that daft, that a man should hold them hostage? Maybe, they want to confirm the saying, "that those from South West, are cowards".

If Uzor Kalu had attended to this matter long before now, it wouldnt have degenerated to this. That part of the nation was allowed to degenerate to a pitiable state. In fact, it got to an extent, I thought it was no longer part of Nigeria. Aba - Ikot Ekpene road, is a living example of government neglect (even from federal level). Today, all the tiers of government and security agencies are looking for immediate solution over what degenerated over a long period of time. Go to Aba, and see whether water will not come out from your eyes, from years of neglect.

When will Lagos airport runway be ready?
Thursday, 14 October 2010

THE insincerity of the Federal Government towards the country’s aviation sector has come to the fore again with continual politicisation of facility repairs across the airports, especially the Runway 18Left of the Murtala Muhammed Domestic airport.

It is on record that the domestic runway being used by mostly the local airline operators was first closed down for repairs in 2007, during the tenure of Professor Babalola Borishade as the aviation minister.

Prior to the closure of the runway, pilots had complained about the state of the runway in view of the danger it posed to safety due to its dilapidated state. The runway which was constructed about 30 years ago had suffered degradation having been used for sizes of aircraft which the runway was not originally constructed to handle.

This constant use of the local runway without maintenance brought about pot holes which posed risk to aircraft taking off and landing. It was at the height of complaints over these that the runway was closed down for repairs.

The repair of the runway which was awarded to Julius Berger has continued to be a source of embarrassment to the country in view of its politicisation by the government.

Initially, the runway was closed down for over one year due to unnecessary bottlenecks and bureaucracy over the approval of funds for the repairs and scheming by different interests over the contract.

When the repairs eventually commenced, it suffered another set back as the repair was abruptly suspended for several months on the excuse that a major component of airfield lighting was not included in the initial approval.

It sounds ridiculous for a project like runway repairs to be negotiated with the exemption of airfield lighting without which flight operations can never be successful.

The delay in the repair of the runway was also attributed to a slight change in the earlier proposal submitted for the repair by the due process unit of the presidency to grant a fresh approval to the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN).

After several muscle flexing by parties involved, the runway was reopened to daily operations with a promise to fix the airfield lightings promptly.

The irony of it is that as the politicking continues, the airline operators are losing fortunes as their aircraft are made to use the Runway 18Right used mostly by foreign carriers in the evenings when the local runway would have been closed down.

The domestic operators lose money through this use of the international runway which is longer than the local runway in view of the fuel an aircraft burns before it taxis through the international runway to the local runway.

Besides money the operators lose, passengers are unnecessarily delayed as a result of the longer time it takes the aircraft to taxi from the international runway to the local airport.

Up till now, the local runway cannot be used for evening flights since its closure over two years ago even though approval has been given for fixing the airfield lighting.

If it is true that FAAN has been directed to source money from its internally generated revenue to fix the airfield lightings, then what is delaying the completion of the project?

At this juncture, government should begin to look into the causes of delay in finishing this job. In case government does not know, the overuse of the international runway by both local and international aircrafts may soon turn it to death trap.

It is, however, sad that the runway could be left uncompleted for close to three years despite the crucial role it plays. Therefore, government should urgently invite all those concerned, including FAAN, to find out why the project has been delayed and expedite action on the repair to prevent dangers that will arise from congested use.

FG approves N51.6bn to pay NITEL/M-TEL workers’ salary arrears
NewsOct 18, 2010
By Victor Ahiuma-Young

ABUJA — THE Federal Government has approved N51.6 billion for the settlement of 30 months salary arrears and exit package due to permanent and casual staff of the embattled Nigeria TeleCommunication Limited, NITEL and its GSM arm, M-tel, raising hope of an early resolution of the wage crisis facing the national outfits.

Minister of Labour and Productivity, Chief Emeka Wogu, who disclosed this, said with this development, a resolution to the 30 months labour crisis in the two government-owned telecommunication companies, had been reached.

Chief Wogu who is the chairman of the Presidential Task Force on NITEL/M-Tel Labour Restructuring, announced government’s approval of the recommendations of the task force in a meeting with executives of the labour unions in the two companies in his office in Abuja.

Another set of people will be added again to already exploded unemployment market. Meanwhile, no matter what anybody will say here, it is better than what OBJ did to Nigerian Airways workers. Even those in the grave will never forgive OBJ for what he did to them, who until date, are yet to get their full benefits. Yet, some idiots will still praise OBJ. Anyway, they might be those who benefitted from him.

FG approves sack of NITEL/M-TEL workers

Written by Soji-Eze Fagbemi, Abuja
Monday, 18 October 2010

All the staff of the state-owned telecommunications companies, NITEL and M-Tel will be sacked, as the Federal Government has approved the recommendations of the Presidential Task Force on NITEL/M-Tel Labour Restructuring earlier constituted to resolve the 30-month-old crisis.

Already, N51. 6 billion has been proposed to settle the severance package and settle all the entitlements of the workers, whose disengagement from now is a matter of days.

Also, the Federal Government accepted the recommendation that after the sack of all the members of staff of the two companies, critical staff that would facilitate a smooth handover to the new core investor would be immediately re-engaged.

But it was made clear that the wage bill of those to be re-engaged should not exceed 10 per cent of the current wage bill.

Under the proposals approved by the Federal Government, the N51.6 billion is to be applied in settling the exit package due to permanent and casual staff of the companies.

The Minister of Labour and Productivity, Chief Emeka Wogu, who is the chairman of the task force, received the union officials behind closed door last week in his office, where he intimated them of the development and the approval of the recommendations of the task force.

He commended them for their patience and expressed government’s acceptance of the recommendations of the task force on the issues.

Ribadu criticises Jonathan over retirement from Police
By Agency Reporter
Tuesday, 12 Oct 2010

Former Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission and presidential aspirant of the Action Congress of Nigeria, Nuhu Ribadu has accused the federal government, under the leadership of President Goodluck Jonathan of unjustly retiring him from the Nigerian Police Force, Empowered Newswire reports.

In an interview with Nigeriavillagesquare, a US-based Nigeria website, the full transcript of which was released over the weekend, the former EFCC boss reacted to claims that he was a mere front for the Jonathan presidency in his political campaigns.

Confirming the existence of such speculation, Ribadu said “you know one thing that is surprising me is about this President Jonathan rumours. This is a government that has retired me for no reason, I have not done anything, I have given 25 years of my life into public service and they retired me.”

Ribadu added that “what Jonathan did was just to change it from dismissal to retirement. And I am yet to be told what I have done for me to be retired from public service.”

Criticising the Peoples Democratic Party, which he said had nothing to do with his presidential aspiration, Ribadu submitted that the party itself had “been extremely unfair to Nigerians and unfair to me.”

Said he “I did, to the best of my ability, what I thought was the right thing and they went after me, they punished me, they humiliated me, they took me out of public service, they retired me, and I have not got one penny up to this moment. And people are talking about me being used? I think that is very unfair to me.”

A 37-year old man has made a confessional statement to the police on how he conspired with three others at large to collect the sum of N1 million from a bank cashier.

The suspect Matthew Akinbo Agbonria, according to the police, has no fixed address while the victim is identified as Lucky Ejere Benedict, 25, a native of Owan East Local Government of Edo State.

Benedict narrated his experience thus: “I am a cashier with a bank on College Road, Estate bus stop, Ogba, Lagos. Normally when I close from work, my supervisor drops me at Fagba Junction.

“On the day of the incident he dropped me as usual and because of the traffic jam, I decided to trek to Ishaga. On my way, I ran into a man who looked as if he missed his way. He asked me his way out and I decided to ask from a passer-by. He told me he didn’t know. The man that missed his way spoke like a foreigner.

“Suddenly the foreigner said he brought goods and that the goods were in hotel in Ishaga. He told me he brought one of the goods in black paper and a chemical with him and he put the chemical into the nylon bag and he poured water on it, shook it immediately and later told me to dip my hand and bring something out.

“I never agreed because I was afraid, the other person with him said he was going to do it and he gave his name as Sunday, real name (Ernest). He dipped his hand into the nylon bag. He brought out N100 note and gave it to the foreigner (Matthew Akinbo Agbonria) and he bit it, gave Sunday to bite as well and passed it to me to bite and after that they said we had sworn to an oath.

“They said to confirm it we should all put saliva on our hands and they made incantation and it came out on the other side. Fear gripped me and they said it was a secret that whoever revealed it will fall down, vomit blood and die.

“That was how I was confused because it took place between 7pm-8pm and they told me they needed to buy chemical to wash the remaining money like N80,000 and we tasked ourselves to bring N25,000 each and the second day, I withdrew the money from my account and gave to them at the same place I met them. And they keept asking for money to the extent that I lied to my female supervisor in the bank to borrow me some money to enable me travel to see my mother that was sick. These people would say bring more money to buy chemical to wash the money and they succeeded in collecting N95,000 from me.

“Three days after, Sunday, one of them, called me on phone to say that they were coming to the bank to collect money and that if I disobeyed them they would shoot me. And in a few minutes I saw Sunday enter the bank and he came straight to me at the counter and he demanded for N1 million. He got it and left immediately.

“In the evening, I was unable to balance the account and my supervisor said may be the figure was hanging and that the next day I will make a proper account. When I resumed the next day I was restless and my supervisor suggested that we should run the camera to enable us see the person that collected the cash and they saw one of the suspects (Sunday).

“The bank arrested the two tellers, me and my colleague and took us to Area ‘G’ Ogba and Iwas charged to the magistrate’s court in Ikeja. The case was adjourned.

“It was through the information that I gave that led to the arrest of Agbonria. The police at Area ‘G’ have charged him to an Ikeja magistrate’s court and he was ordered to be remanded in Kirikiri, while the case comes up today.

Agbonria said: “We have been doing it for two years now alongside my three other accomplices. And we have made much money. I have plots of land in Lagos. I have a wife and children.”

The police at Area ‘G’ said they are on the trail of the other fleeing suspects.

*Woman Dies in Nigerian Ex-Governor U.S. Home
By Masterweb News Desk

A Nigerian woman, Chinwe Masi, 47, on August 19 died in the United States home of Ex-Abia governor, Orji Uzor Kalu. Chinwe died from suspected internal organ failure that may have been triggered by ingestion of alcohol. She suffered from high blood pressure according to friends.

Chinwe, formerly married to one Okechukwu Ogbonna, reportedly arrived the ex-governor’s home at 14900 River Road, Potomac, Maryland at 8.30 pm on the fateful day, Thursday, August 19. According to sources, she had gone to deliver cologne purchased by the ex-governor at her shop during a previous U.S. visit in June this year. There were four other Nigerians at the ex-governor’s home at the time of Chinwe’s arrival.
Chinwe was offered a bottle of Guinness stout upon her request and 15 minutes later started shouting “my chest, my chest” vomiting blood. The ex-governor immediately picked up the phone and called paramedics and police, both arriving the scene in minutes. Paramedics were on their way carrying her into the ambulance when she gave up the ghost at 8.48 pm.

Police and detectives with the permission of the ex-governor, conducted an 8-hour search of his home. The Homicide unit of Montgomery County Police Department said they do not suspect foul play so far in Chinwe’s death and were awaiting autopsy results for final conclusion.

Court Order May Ground Hitv Over Copy Right Issue From July 15th, 2010

Come 15 July this year, the operations and activities of Hitv may be grounded as Musical Copy Right Society of Nigeria is set to enforce a court order issued today by a Federal High Court sitting in Lagos, South West Nigeria.
The applicants have brought in two experts from Grey Inn, London to examine the computers, the mast and all the equipment used in transmitting all their programmes nationwide.

This was sequel to the order of a Federal High Court in a suit filed by the Musical Copy Right Society of Nigeria claiming N1.2 billion over an alleged infringement of musical works of some artistes in which the society has exclusive copy right.

Initially when the order was issued, the management of Hitv disallowed the court officials from carrying out the execution of the order.
Consequently, the court summoned the managing director and chief executive officer of Hitv, Mr. Toyin Subair to appear before the court to show cause why he should not be charged for contempt of court.

When they appeared, their lawyer, Dr. Joseph Nwobike, SAN, pleaded on their behalf. Thereafter, the presiding judge, Justice Okechukwu Okeke reaffirmed his earlier order that the premises of Hitv be inspected by court officials to ascertain and bring before the court any material used by the organisation, any instrument used in pirating or infringing of the artistes like Sunny Ade, Adewale Ayuba which Musical Copy Society complained about.

In a bid to enforce this court order, the applicant has brought two renowned experts from London to examine the equipment which may disrupt the paid televion outfit.
