Hello Francis,

Welcome to Nairaland. it would be nice if you can supply the following info:
[li]The make of the laptop, including manufacturer's name and product number[/li][li]Tell us about the events leading to the time the laptop stopped working[/li][li]Give us the full text of the error messages you get when you try to install Windows on it.[/li]
Based on what you've said so far, I have to assume that you need a new hard disk. If this is not the case, we might be able to help you using the information I requested above.

TV/MoviesNigerian TV Guide - Shows, Channels, Times for Television Stations by Seun(mod): 4:15pm On May 10, 2005
Hi there,

Let's create a Nigerian TV Guide! All you need to do is list your favourite TV programmes('shows'), the station/stations and time/times on which they are shown during the week.

By doing this we'll be able to create a useful list of the most watched TV programmes shown in Nigeria. That is, a TV guide!

Seun.

MY LIST:
Dharma and Greg - STV - Friday, 8:30pm
Louis and Clark (Superman) - STV - Sunday, 10:30pm+
Fuji House of Commotion - STV - Sunday, 7:30pm
Buffy the Vampire - STV - Saturday, 9pm
What about yours?
Nairaland GeneralSystematic Posting of new Topics Based on Events by Seun(mod): 3:56pm On May 10, 2005
Hello,

One of the ways to make sure a website has consistent traffic (direct traffic from existing users) is to post in a consistent, systematic way. A very good example is a news website that's updated once a day, so that every morning when you go there there's something new for you (that's one reason why news websites are so popular)

I do not think that, for a forum, it's reasonable to arbitrarily set a rule for number of new topics a day. It is not nice to have a forum cluttered with dry (boring) threads that were started just to maintain a minimum number of new topics for the day. A better approach is to monitor popular events that take place periodically and make sure that there is a thread for each occurence of that event.

Once we are able to guarantee a certsin number of new topics per week due to events we have chosen to cover, we can sit back and rely on our fast-growing population of users to spice up the forum by introducing a random, unscheduled, variety of new topics of their own.

I have created this thread so you can suggest periodic events (events that take X times a year, X times a month, etc) that are popular enough to be fully covered on the forum.

As a sequel to our thread for men titled "would you date an older girl?", here is a question for the ladies.

Would you marry a man who is younger than you? Why or why not?

For the people who may not have understood hope's joke:
Okada men and area boys are some of the most violent groups of people in the country. When you hurt an okada man, the others would mobilize themselves to attack you. Same with the area boys. So when you see an area boy and okada man fighting, you know there is going to be a full scale war - "the film has just begun! grin"

TV/MoviesNigeria has a Satellite in Orbit! (NigeriaSat-1) by Seun(mod): 9:00pm On May 09, 2005
Did you know that there's a Nigerian Satellite known as NigeriaSat-1 in orbit? It was launched from Russia on the 27th of September, 2003.

The Satellite’s ground control station is and is controlled by 15 Nigerian Engineers in Abuja (trained in Surrey, Inited Kingdom). The operation is supervised by NASDRA, the National Space Research and Development Agency.

The satellite is part of the world-wide Disaster Monitoring Constellation System. Images of the country obtained from the satellite are beamed back to the control station for use by the Government.

It can be used for the following purposes:
[li]To give advance warnings of natural disasters like floods, earthquakes, volcanic eruptions and storms.[/li]
[li]To avoid or manage occurence of man-made disasters like oil pollution, desertification, erosion, forest fire, and deforestation,[/li]
[li]In agriculture, for mapping, land use planning, management of sustainable grazing, forest logging, planning afforestation programmes, crop inventory and yield forecast.[/li]
[li]Water resources development and management, including assessment of the quantity and quality of surface and underground water, rainfall prediction, as well as integrated water resources management on drought and other disaster forecast.[/li]
[li]Solid mineral exploration and exploitation, including general geological mapping and map update or revision, as well as differentiating host mineral areas in oil, gas and solid mineral exploration.[/li]
[li]Ecosystem: Evaluation and monitoring of vegetation and land use as well as the aquatic system.[/li]
[li]Local and regional planning for tourism and its potentials.[/li]
[li]Demographic uses such as mapping and planning of population surveys, census enumeration areas, as well as mapping, planning and monitoring of rural and urban growth.[/li]
[li]Mapping of state and international boundaries, planing and mapping of terrain traffic for defence and security purposes, as well as identification and neutralisation international criminals.[/li]
[li]It would be used in public health delivery to establish the relationship between malaria vectors and the environment that breeds malaria, while its remote sensing technology can be used to give early warning signals on future outbreaks of meningitis.[/li]
[li]To provide the technology needed to bring education to all parts of the country via distant learning.[/li]
According to the Office of Public Communications,
"Government hopes in future to employ people in space industry as an important economic engine of development.
It is also expected that the Nigerian space industry would serve neighboring African countries with data needs and thereby generate foreign exchange for the country."

If the person at the other end understands what those smileys mean, then you have communicated. Smileys don't have to be converted into graphics for people to understand their meaning! Smileys were originally used for pure text messaging on computer networks. The smiley graphics were added later.

PetsWhat Do You Feed Your Pet? by Seun(mod): 4:23am On May 09, 2005
Hi there,

Our two dogs, Bily and Shermin, are very picky eaters. They do not take rice with stew in it; they will not eat jollof rice. We have to buy fish in the market, boil it and mix it with boiled rice for them! Our previous dogs used to eat mostly rice and stew mixed with leftover bone or pieces of meat left over from other cooking activities, but these ones are just too picky!

Our cats used to be fed on bread and tea, and a variety of foods (they are so small; they eat so little compared to dogs)

What about your pets?
PoliticsNigerian Police Installing Automated Fingerprinting Machines. Criminals Beware! by Seun(mod): 4:18am On May 09, 2005
On the fourth of May 2005, the Federal Executive Council of Nigeria approved the purchase and installation of automated fingerprinting machines to the tune of 257 million. According to Mr. Broderick Bozimo, Minister of Police Affairs, the installation wil be carried out by a Nigerian firm in collaboration with a Korean firm (source)

I think this is a nice one from the Government, though perhaps overdue. I believe that a number of innocent people are being condemned to death by hanging in this country based on circumstantial evidence; may such misfortune not befall any one of us. A police force that can work with fingerprint evidence will be a much better police force.

We already know about 2face Idibia (the artiste behing 'You Are My African Queen'). We know that the boy is good!

What about the others? Who else would you classify among the 'best Nigerian Musicians'?

[Some of our local musicians like to rap. Now, pidgin rapping can be very entertaining, like "Monica". However, when Nigerian artistes try to deliver 'americanized' raps, I say to myself "yuck!" I mean, sometimes you can still hear the yoruba accent under the americanized performance!]

Anyway, let me show you my best Nigerian musicians list: Lagbaja, Styl-plus (the 'Olufunmi' boys), Kush Music, and ... well, that's it!

Is Nairaland Seun Osewa? Is Nairaland the House of Reps? Is Nairaland a not-for-profit group of people dedicated to the dissemination of knowledge among Nigerians, or is it a for-profit entity?
