I am so sorry about this topic. We have dropped it from the home page. Victim blaming is something that should never be condoned. It's not bad to say, 'here are the things you can do to protect yourself', but to say that the people who have been abused are the "main cause" is evil.

People are fatally attracted to get rich quick schemes. No matter the disclaimers, they will continue to throw their money away. Its so sad.

When we first started accepting ads directly on Nairaland, we noticed that sports betting and forex trading platforms were our best advertisers. At a point, they bought more than 50% of our ad slots. But when we realised that the money for those ads ultimately came from the pockets of Nairalanders who lost their money while trying to make easy money on these platforms, we had to stop accepting them.

Unfortunately, the promotion of these gambling schemes on Nairaland didn't stop just because we stopped accepting their ads. There are literally thousands of threads in the business, investment, and sports sections that promote these gambling schemes. Lots of people who would otherwise not have gambled have stumbled upon these threads and have been lured into parting with their hard-earned money.

We have extended rule 16 which previously banned only the promotion of MLM and HYIP schemes so that it now reads:
Rule 16. Don't promote shady investments like betting, HYIP, MLM, FOREX, binary options, and cryptocurrencies on Nairaland..

We apologize for any inconveniences this might cause and urge all Nairaland members to focus on real businesses that solve real problems.

Forex is a zero sum game, which means that for someone to win, someone else must lose. Even if every "investor" is disciplined and "smart" and following the "best strategies", some people must lose money in order for others to win. Every win is at the expense of someone's loses. And that is before you consider the fees. When you consider the fees, it becomes clear that retail forex is a very dumb business to be in.

All business have their own scam, there are people who get duped when they want to buy a house or land, so are you going to say real estate business is fraud??

Real business is superior in many ways:
1) In real business, whether you succeed or fail, you're providing a useful service to society. In retail FOREX speculation, you're not.
2) If all people who go into a legitimate business are smart, it is possible for all of them to be successful. In FOREX, many people must lose.
3) In FOREX, the winners are the brokers or lucky. In business, the winners are usually those who provide the best value to society.

I feel bad about disrupting the forex communities on Nairaland, but we'll be better off when real business topics start dominating this section.

Inasmuch this saddens my heart greatly,
I did saw this coming and I tried warning y'all about ogbo, but I was resented and some called me new and ogbo a long term professional.
I might be new here but I'm not new to the forex business.
Before I partook forex a while ago. I examined the pros and cons of this trade, yes I did my research.
And I found ogbo scam pattern along the line, only if y'all had listen. The real problem was Tom, he was a drowning man and ogbo baited him believing to have thrown in a life line. Now that was were the pattern was completed.
Anyway the did has been done.
We came here to help each other and to improve ourselves but now most of the talks is on ogbo and that is very sad.
To me let's find the ogbo and get leverage on him. That's the only way out.
Ogbo believes no one here got nothing on him, but let's prove him wrong.
For the greater good of us all.
And the money he took, would be refunded.
But those that has been scammed by ogbo should all come out and create a thread on him, darn it! That is long over due. All details on him should be posted there too. Once we ban forex promotion on Nairaland, things like this will no longer happen. Speculative businesses like forex are very prone to fraud.

We are specifically against retail forex, which is "the small segment of the larger foreign exchange market where individuals speculate on the exchange rate between different currencies" because it "has been promoted by some as an easy way to make profits and has thus been the focus for a number of foreign exchange frauds", according to wikipedia.

Do you realise that you've just posted the name, picture and phone numbers of the person whose privacy you are supposedly trying to protect?

Mynd44 says he already banned the person who stole the young lady's id and already hid all her posts. He has just hidden the quotes as well.

We are thinking of completely banning the promotion of forex trading and sports betting on Nairaland.

Forex day-trading and sports betting are fundamentally fraudulent because they're promoted as a quick way of making money whereas due to mathematical facts, the only people who make money are the middlemen and marketers. The "investors" almost always lose their money.

In our experience, it's not enough to warn Nairaland members about the dangers of forex day-trading and sports betting. The promise of quick profit is just too strong for thousands of vulnerable Nairaland members to resist. The only way to protect them is complete censorship.

We believe that the complete ban of such content will make Nairaland a better platform for discussing legitimate entrepreneurship and finance.

That's a small amount of cash. You won't earn more than 5k a year from any legitimate investment, or less than 500 monthly. You will be tempted to put it in fake investments promising much more than that, but if you do, you are likely to lose all the 50k in a very short time.

Just leave the money in a savings account in the bank. You may need it when you least expect to. If you must invest, invest in FGN bonds.
