arcbay: This is a very pure local dog, although he has the traits of boerboel which could be seen from the shape of his ears and the colour pattern...This dog must have been the product of a local dog(dam) with a cross bred local dog(sire).

I agree with you guys. It's more likely to be a Boerboel cross-breed since hounds are very rare in Nigeria and Boerboels are more common.

Please sell her through Nairaland if you're selling her. The community's participation will help to ensure that she goes to the right new owner.

@oluomoadebayo: My feeling is that a chain is better than a crate because it gives the dog more freedom to move around. If a dog is ok with being locked in his crate or kennel, it should be easy to train it to be ok with being chained in a comfortable place. What am I missing?

@sportin: Another idea in addition to the suggestion to get her a tennis ball or challenging raw bones:
Whenever you want to feed your dog, chain her. Then when the food is finished, release her. When you want to play with her, chain her but don't secure the chain so she can drag it around. When playtime is over, remove the chain. Soon she'll look forward to being chained.

His ears are really long and floppy. They are similar to the ears found on hounds such as the ones on this page:

He also has the sad, mopey looking face that many hounds e.g. the bloodhound have.

adebayoggt: The dog i beleive is not getting the care he deserve.

You can help:
- Get the dog fully dewormed (the dewormer I last used on my dog had to be taken twice a day for 3 days)
- Bathe the dog (optional) and rub a quality anti-parasitic powder all over his body (fibronyl spray is better if you can afford it)
- Supplement the current food they are giving him with 1 (or 2) cooked Shawa fish every day. That's just 100 naira.
- For his dental health, give him bones regularly or buy one raw chicken leg for him to chew on from time to time.

If the family is unable to take care of him and you can't afford to spend your own money on him, pls convince them to sell him on Nairaland.

Before you become a dog breeder, you need to be a successful dog owner. Owning your own personal dog is level 1, while breeding is level 10. You need to have a deep scientific and practical understanding of dogs, from your experience and from good dog books and youtube videos. You also need to understand the market. Why are people buying dogs? What breeds are they buying and why? What can you do better than others?

The mother certainly looks like a real short-haired GSD. She is more stocky & thicker than one would expect, though.

It is unfortunate that no picture of the father is available because without that you can't be sure of the puppies' purity.

The seller is dishonest so even if he sends you a genuine-looking picture of the father, you can't be sure that it's real.

He may or may not be pure. We can't be sure until we see pictures of his parents. Most GSD mixes look alike as young puppies.

Shy dogs are not ideal for security. If you don't socialise a shy dog, the dog will not become aggressive but it will be scared of everything. It may bark a little but only out of irrational fear. Socialisation is very helpful to a shy or fearful dog. But you should socialise dogs outside their territories if you want them to remain security conscious. Take your dog to places far away from your home for socialisation, so that the dog will lose its fear of people and other things but remain aggressive to strangers who venture into your home - the dog's territory.

I'm surprised that you are talking about killing the dog. That shows a lack of affection. Maybe that's why he has no interest in protecting you?

Please post a picture of the dog here so we can give you an idea of the breed.

Also, please tell us the age of the dog. Most dogs become territorial at maturity. Most young puppies will play with any person that they meet.

Can you post pictures of the parents urgently please? Present the evidence to us so we can come to our own conclusions. I like the puppy.

The dog killed 3 chickens. If the life of a dog is important then the lives of those chickens were also important. Just let your neighbours know that if they had reported the killing of the chickens to you instead of killing the dog, you would have paid them the full value of the chickens.

You should measure the shoulder height. A German Shepherd male should be 24 to 26 inches tall at the shoulders. I agree with your assesment.
