@Jarus: I really appreciate your support. Please consider participating in the next debate, since it's now possible!!

Please check out this thread and give me your thoughts https://www.nairaland.com/1177398/official-politics-weekly-debate-1
PoliticsOfficial Politics Weekly Debate #1 - Debaters Wanted by Seun(mod):
Ladies and Gentlemen,

The topic we've chosen for the inaugural debate under the new weekly format is "How Should Our Government Treat Gay People?"

This topic is very divisive. Liberals, libertarians, and people exposed to western culture believe that they should be left alone by the government and that perhaps they should even be granted certain 'fundamental' rights like the right to be legally married to their gay partners and legal protection from discrimination. Others believe they should be rounded up, disgraced, imprisoned, and perhaps even shot dead if they don't desist from their sinful activities. We believe it will take a formal debate to expose people the the best arguments on both sides of this controversial topic.

The debate will take place between Wednesday and Next Sunday on this forum.

If you'd like to participate, just reply this thread, stating:
1) Your position on the issue of how our government should treat gay people.
2) A couple of paragraphs of strong, original, and impressive arguments in defence of your position.

If you are not a good debater, you should simply "like" the replies submitted on this page by people whose opinions you agree with and who are capable of advocating for your position competently in the debate, based on everything you know about them.

We will select 4 to 8 debaters who seem to know what they are talking about, and then go to the main debate on Wednesday - Saturday.

Thanks and Goodluck!

@0lumide: Your comments are entirely offtopic so in order to keep the thread on topic, we will have to ignore them. Sorry about that!

@Pharoh: Thanks for sharing your opinion. Most of your on-topic concerns have been addressed in my earlier posts. Thanks a million.

DemDem: There is nothing wrong with the current system, even if u want to modify it then it should be for good and not "dabaru" everything. Let's stick to what we have which currently work.
I sense that you are afraid that our efforts to improve the current system will fail. We'll take that as a challenge. You won't be disappointed!

@Ngakwe: Yes, Afam4eva is not perfect. But Jarus was not perfect either. Nobody is perfect, but if we are determined, we will succeed.
PoliticsRe: NL Monthly Political Debate by Seun(mod): 9:49am On Jan 28, 2013
manny4life: As for the arguments, they are very and super lengthy that most times, it just makes it too difficult to read, I'd say limit the wordings to a limit. There are people who can argue precisely but keep it short and interesting.
Good idea. We may implement that if we notice the problem of lengthy posts in the new format. There will be no winners/losers.

Ngwakwe: A debate without a winner is dead. Let just call it Round Table Discussion or Monthly Intellectual Reasoning.
Presidential debates don't have official winners. The goal of each contestant will be to persuade the public to take his/her position.

[quite author=Jarus]Good modifications, but frankly, weekly event is a DOA. I'm talking from experience. Initial gragra will soon fade out, it is unsustainable.[/quote]The event has to be a weekly event in order to significantly impact the forum. We are streamlining the process to make it work on a weekly basis.

Negro_Ntns: hey man, ..it is really shocking to witness the way and manner with which nairaland administrators resolve disputes within their own fold. if this was a city or a state these guys will be the governor. we are expecting to see fashola in them but they are displaying rochas. shame!
It's normal for human beings to disagree from time to time. But as long as the disagreements are maturely handled, things will be ok. Don't worry!

ilugunboy: We either find a way to accommodate Jarus to continue with his baby or we start with a brand new and fresh initiative.
I hereby declare that the new weekly debate format is a brand new and fresh initiative. Up Nairaland! cheesy
PoliticsRe: NL Monthly Political Debate by Seun(mod): 9:34am On Jan 28, 2013
coogar: jarus' name is a brand!
people are excited when they see him coordinating stuff like this. in the sports section, he's doing something similar with the player rating in the cup of nations - he posts his opinion and people either argue for/against his prognosis!
I agree with you that his contest organizing and management abilities are second to none, but that doesn't mean he has a monopoly on performance!

i agree it's become difficult as he's no longer a mod but he can always be in contact with afam/oam4j through the private message and ask them to remove/add posts! how is this difficult. that afam is now the mod does not mean he can do this better - he can also be better than jarus at other stuff jarus is completely clueless about!
That was the initial plan, but I don't expect Jarus to be able to work effectively with both Afam4eva and OAM4J, so my hands are rather tied.

ujchief: These are my inputs:
1) It will be tedious, if not impossible to organize a weekly debate. The process of debate entails selecting a topic, appointing judges, selecting contestants and then the actual debate. All of us have life outside Nl and keeping up with such weekly activities might be tasking, both on the side of moderators, judges, contestants and voters.
Our plan is to streamline the process drastically. Topic selection will be done by our team, based on our knowledge of the kind of topics that attract attention on a forum. Since we won't be selecting a winner, there will be no need to appoint judges. Contestants will be selected on the basis of how much they seem to know about the topic, so there will be no vote to select contestants. Since the contest will be held frequently, people won't mind because if you're not selected on a particular week, you may be selected the next week. Many more people will be able to participate.

2) I still don't understand the correlation between Nairalanders selecting (or electing) the winners and the points you listed as the advantages of the new method.
your polling system isn't working, and manual collation of votes is tasking, both in the part of mods and we the floor members that might try to ensure a due process.

3) Lastly, I've witnessed several events requiring voting here in Nl, most of them turn out ugly. there's always room for someone to believe there's foul play somewhere; and don't over-estimate those visiting the politics section of Nl, not all knows what a good point entails. So they are misled to either join the crowd, or vote out of sentiment; be it religious, tribal or ethnic.
There will be no polling and no official winners. The topics being debated will be the focus of the debate, and not who won or who lost the debate.

Thanks. I will make more inputs and suggestion later.
Thanks!

PoliticsRe: NL Monthly Political Debate by Seun(mod): 5:04pm On Jan 27, 2013
I'm pleased to inform you all that Afam4eva has agreed to manage the debates.

We're working on some fresh ideas, such as:
- holding the debates weekly instead of monthly so that they'll have more impact and more people will be able to participate.
- eliminating the entire process for selecting winners and allowing Nairaland members to make up their own minds about who won or lost each debate or whose position is right. (No more official winners). One advantage of this is that it will make the debates easy to run so we can run them more frequently. it will also eliminate the possibility of picking the wrong winner due to one form of bias or the other. It will push more people to read the actual arguments carefully to make up their own minds about who 'won' instead of just relying on the official result. It will encourage contestants to make their debates more down-to-earth so that they can be understood by average Nairaland members too.

What do you think about these ideas?
PoliticsRe: NL Monthly Political Debate by Seun(mod): 2:33pm On Jan 27, 2013
After doing some research, I've come to the conclusion that it would be best to officially put afam4eva in charge of this debate.

Like everyone else, I would have liked to have Jarus continue because he has done a great job. However, since he is no longer a moderator, he would need to collaborate with the current moderators to get things done. However, considering the fact that he resigned from his position when one of them was appointed, I think it's unrealistic to expect them to collaborate with him very well.

Fortunately, I have observed Afam4eva's efforts to take over from Jarus, and I believe he has what it takes to do even better than Jarus. I have offered to appoint him as the moderator in charge of official debate contests in the politics section. I hope he accepts my offer so we can start working to make the debates even better than they were.

Misunderstandings are a normal part of life. Even married couples have them. The key to success & progress is to resolve them quickly.

Feed me more: Ok noted.
But can you please tell us why you think the thread need not be sticky?
Any particular reason for this? undecided
I felt the thread was popular enough to survive on merit rather than us having to impose it on you by making it sticky. I am surprised that it was abandoned the moment I unstickied it, because considering the popularity of the debate, one would expect that people would be updating the thread constantly thus keeping it on page 1 of the politics section. I will investigate this further.

Gboliwe: What manner of man is this nl administrator?
You unstickied a very sensitive thread (sensitive in the sense that Jarus and Afam4ever are in it and any slight misunderstanding would explode) without informing the owner of the thread and the moderators of the section on why.
You see the bad blood it is brewing already.
This idea you have on making the debate better should have been introduced in the thread and other users criticise it. Why are you trying to impose your ideas and run it by yourself?
Running the debate myself is the last thing I want to do, but I'm prepared to run it for a week or two in order to make things right and make everyone happy.

I think your characterisation of Jarus and Afam4eva as sensitive kids who will throw tantrums if anyone dares to touch their toys is insulting and completely false. All the current and past moderators of the Politics section are capable of resolving misunderstandings with unbelievable maturity. It's unlikely that a little thing like unstickying a thread, which could have been done by mistake, would cause serious problems between us. They are all mature and level-headed and they are not in the habit of blowing minor issues out of proportion. Don't worry about that.

PoliticsRe: Let's Have Your Complaints, Suggestions & Enquiries Here by Seun(mod): 9:10am On Jan 27, 2013
Deep Sight: Boss, with respect, you are just chasing shadows. The debate was to hold yesterday and did not happen. No notice of postponement, nothing.
What happened? ? ? ? ?
What you should have said is that you don't understand understand what I said. Not to worry, I will break it down for you.

I decided to unsticky the thread because it does not need to be sticky. There are threads on this forum that are 500 pages long and they are not sticky threads. However, the organizers did not understand my reason and so they decided to abandon the competition. They did not ask me and I did not tell them. I hereby accept responsibility for this misunderstanding

In order to make things right, I will take over the management of the competition on the short term, since it has been abandoned by the original organisers. This is because I can't force them to do what they don't want to do. I have some ideas about how to make it better, so this will be a win-win situation for everyone. Stay tuned!
PoliticsRe: Let's Have Your Complaints, Suggestions & Enquiries Here by Seun(mod): 11:59pm On Jan 26, 2013
I unstickied the thread because I felt the popularity of the thread would be enough to sustain it. I thought it would not need to be a sticky thread since thousands of Nairalanders are already following it. A popular thread should not need to be sticky to survive.
