No, I think you need to create your own job: www.nairaland.com/nigeria/topic-40212.0.html There are times when I need the services of a statistician, but I don't think I can afford one on a part-time basis. |
Charitable activities can bring tremendous PR benefits, of course. I'm not disputing that. (People really are gullible.) But I'm saying that companies that practice charity do not contribute substantially more to society than those that don't. Charitable activities need constant monitoring to achieve their intended objectives, but a company that's just trying to obtain PR benefits doesn't have an incentive to spend its resources on monitoring. As long as they get some media coverage, they really don't care whether their their "CSR" is helpful on the long term. As a result of that, most of the benefit of "CSR" flows into the pockets of professional NGO people. That's my 2nd point. My 1st point is that companies are not obligated to "give back". They already give a lot in the course of business. |
@akinlabi, Tmoni, canarchy, ibkn, naijaguru: thanks, guys, for your support. My the results of my experiments on the SQL requirements of tagging have been encouraging. I can generate tags related to a topic, topics related to a tag, and tags related to another tag, very easily. One idea - allowing people to post without registration - seems to be the right way forward for various reasons, but I'm finding it hard to decide on whether to make anonymity compulsory or merely to require it. Anyway, I'll be borrowing ideas from Joel Spolsky's Building Communities With Software article (his results). |
What if one is not using firefox? |
Microsoft Silverlight (code-named Windows Presentation Foundation/Everywhere or WPF/E) is a cross-platform XAML-based WPF technology that provides features such as video, vector graphics, and animations to multiple operating systems including Windows Vista, Windows XP, and Mac OS X. Specifically, the Silverlight runtime is provided as an plug-in for Mozilla Firefox, Internet Explorer 6, Internet Explorer 7, and Apple Safari. These plug-ins will allow browsers to use Silverlight graphics capabilities. The browser plug-ins will be similar to Adobe Flash, a highly popular graphic plug-in available for most browsers. Internet Explorer will have native support for WPF in Windows Vista, and will support Silverlight in older versions. One advantage which Microsoft claims over Flash is that content created with Silverlight is more searchable and indexable. Silverlight also supports cross-platform playback of Windows Media content without requiring the Windows Media Player ActiveX Control or plugins for other internet browsers. Silverlight will work in concert with XAML and will be scriptable with JavaScript. Version 2.0 will also contain a version of the Common Language Runtime so it can execute VB.NET and C# code in a sandbox with no local file access. Commonly mentioned as alternatives to Silverlight are Adobe Flex, Nexaweb, OpenLaszlo, and Ajax. The first CTP of Silverlight was released in December 2006. Microsoft aims to have a final release by mid-2007. Companies in Nigeria are making impact without CSR. CSR is only popular in the US because of tax breaks and the public relations benefit (people are so gullible). The true impact of a business in society is in customer service. - I am browsing the web today at an affordable because of my ISP. Is that not impact? - I can buy get a mobile phone line for a ridiculous price today because of Globacom. Is that not impact? - You can ask questions and get free answers on Nairaland, a commercial website. Is that not impact? - You can search for information on google and find it, yet they are making billions. Is that not impact? Companies are best at what they do: providing valuable services and making money for their employees and investors. It is now up to the investors and employees to use that money to pursue charity on their own. |
Nigeria is not yet ripe for that kind of thing. You will begin to have ghost citizens,If you can first agree with me that it's a good idea, then we can talk about the implementation details. Concerning inflation, do you guys believe that foreign investment of $40 billion or so will lead to inflation? If so, then I want you to consider that what matters is not inflation or no inflation, but better lives of people. The world being a global village, the overall result of a dollar giveaway to millions of Nigerians would benefit us at the expense of everybody else in the world who spends dollars. Localized inflation won't be the result. |
Even in a nation famed for its free market economy,52% of Americans receive income from the GovtMeaning what? That fact supports my point of view that giving this money to the people is feasible. My proposal asks the government to give away money to its citizens equally: rich or poor, employed or unemployed. money is just paperTrust me, I understand money. Money is not wealth, but it can be used to transfer wealth. What I am suggesting is a transfer of wealth from the people who think they own us and to everybody else. You and I. An excess of dollars will not result in inflation. It will result in a short importation boom, and nothing more. |
even if okotie has all the ideas and he goes around nigeria and tells everyone to vote for him, with obj and atiku alive, do u think he'ld win?Why should we be talking about a candidate without ideas when other people like Pat Utomi are also contesting? |
People like Utomi and Donald Duke had ideas. Even if those ideas were often wrong, at least they had them! If you want Nigerians to waste their votes on you, you should give them a reason to do so. A good reason! If a presidential candidate does not have political godfathers, then he should have ideas. That's the least we expect. |
yes i know okotie can't win because of the present state of the nation, but in a freer country, he would.Okotie won't win because he is all smoke and no fire. He can speak eloquently, but he has no genuine ideas. |
there is way too much at stake (and serious players involved) to watch their money go down the drain,You mean like Enron? (hehehe, just being mischievous, but this is a good point) |
See? You are already getting offers. Obviously web design is in demand. What you really need is a portfolio. |

As we all know, there are only two ways to make a profit if you are merely breaking even: 1) Increase your revenue. 2) Reduce your costs. With the limited information you've given us, it's hard to select one, but I'll have to choose option (1). To increase your revenue, you may need more customers. To get new customers, you need to go out and promote your business to potential customers. This may not work if you have to hire new employees to cope with them. Another approach is to raise your prices, but this will fail unless your services are far superior to others in the area. A third and possibly smarter approach is to provide additional services to your existing customers and charge them for those additional services. I don't have any specific example, but it could be anything that your wealthier clients will appreciate. For example, you might offer to make hair for your clients at home but charge them 100% more! |
I don't think Atiku can win. Even Northerners would rather vote for Yar Adua. Atiku is simply not credible. If Yar'adua had given us one chance to see what he really has to offer, he would have been my preferred candidate. |
i think for every successful man there is a strong woman in the background,Why must a woman be in the background if she has something to offer the world? ![]() |
If the guy's way of thinking will make him feel inferior to his lady if she's successful , then they should breakup. |
"Go to LNG HR dept and explain" is the perfect advice for you. This shouldn't be a major problem at all. |
Corporate social responsibility should not be about charity. It should be about not being corrupt; not cheating people. Any thief can go into 'charity' as a way of laundering his ill-gotten wealth, but that's not the answer in my opinion. If you choose to go about your business in a very honest manner, then you're socially responsible in my book. Your activities will inevitably benefit others. Companies in Nigeria are not socially responsible: they cheat, disappoint customers, and manipulate the government. |
