Yes, it is true that the food that is thrown away gives farmers some income, but if food is not thrown away, the land and fertiliser and human effort used to grow that food will be used for something more useful than food thrown away. For example, the land used to cultivate the wasted food could have been used to build hospitals, motherless babies' homes, et cetera. That is the true cost of throwing the food away. The other way to look at is that the wasted food could have been exported, which boosts national income. So throwing food away actually harms the economy.

Having said that, you don't have to be guilty about it. You have every right to waste the fruit of your labor.
