Crime › Re: Nigerian Hanged In Singapore by Seun(mod): 11:05am On Jan 29, 2007
Trust me, nobody wants to lose 3 million naira or a year of one's life. That's a lot of time and money.

What's important is not the gravity of punishment per se but the likelihood of prosecution.

If the crime is punishable by life imprisonment, but you can buy your way out of prosecution, you won't be deterred.

Nigeria has it backwards. Are laws are unreasonably harsh, but we cannot catch any offender.

Family › Re: Should Wives Submit To Their Husbands? by Seun(mod): 10:55am On Jan 29, 2007
Asking anyone to "submit" is an insult on their humanity. That's the way I see it.

My people like to joke that when I get married my wife will just be doing "whatever she likes". My response, "what else should she be doing?" Should she be doing "whatever she doesn't like" instead? huh
Politics › Re: What Can You Offer Nigeria? (to make it a great nation?) by Seun(mod): 10:53am On Jan 29, 2007
everyone is a mini government, but by extension people freely give up their mini government status to form a bigger government that will oversee the needs of the people who make up that governmen
Those who regard themselves as responsible adults should hold on to their mini-government status. They shouldn't give up their freedom for empty political promises. They should exercise those freedoms as part of the private sector.

Politics › Re: Is Nigeria A Failed State? by Seun(mod): 10:38am On Jan 29, 2007
The problem of our country is not with the people, but with the government of this country.
Isn't the government made up of people? Yes, the problem of our country is partly with the government. And privatization is the best solution to that. It puts the destiny of the country in the hands of you and I.

Every country that is great today achieved greatness with 80% government support and 20% private support.
Wrong. Politicians are very good at taking credit for the achievements of the private sector i.e. you and I.

how come we are now the 2nd poorest nation in the world?
Unlike some other African countries, we don't have civil war, we don't have famine, we don't have drought. We even have democracy - so even if our government officials are corrupt, we can abuse them without the fear of being killed. How can you honestly say we are the poorest nation in the world? That's completely ridiculous! So we're poorer than countries whose citizens are refugees of war? Countries where adults are dying of hunger? Spare me!

they have to burn diesel which leads to high Tariff
Nigerian businesses can use wind power or solar power, but they choose to use diesel and petrol-powered generators. Do you know why? Because diesel is cheaper, man! Ever wonder why Nigerians don't bother to conserve electricity by specifically buying energy-efficient light bulbs and gadgets. Because electricity is cheap, that's why!

The high tax they pay to the Fg which also lead to high tariff
I'm in support of minimal taxation, which is something only extensive privatization can lead to.

How many people will be willing to invest in a country where there is no security, no light, no good roads
- I would be willing to start a private security firm in a country with no security. It will make a lot of money!
- I would be willing to start an electricity generation plant in a country with no light. It will make a lot of money!
- I would be willing to run a private road construction business in a country with no good roads. Lots of profit!

See? With privatization, I'd be able to do all these things without the government standing in my way. Investment is what creates the so-called infrastructure in the first place, and the private sector can tackle that efficiently. I mean, look at the telecoms sector. Is that not also a form of infrastructure? And it's doing well under private control.

We are asking the government to provide jobs for the people.
They can either do it themselves or invite the private sectors
Look, my dear friend, unemployment is a myth in the absence of minimum wage laws and such. Jobs are available to those who are willing to make themselves useful to others. Self-employment guarantees a job in Nigeria.
TV/Movies › Re: The Best Movie Ever In Nigeria (amazing Grace?) by Seun(mod): 10:19am On Jan 29, 2007
A movies are not the ideal way to document history. That's what textbooks are for.

The purpose of a movie is to take people through an emotional ride that makes them feel really good by the end.
Autos › Re: Motorcycle Operators Banned Indefinitely In Calabar by Seun(mod): 10:09am On Jan 29, 2007
How will the government be able to single out the arsonist?
The normal way the police singles out criminals of course.

We shouldn't have to teach them their job, because this is what we need the government for, but:
- Government officials should inspect the physical evidence left at the crime scene.
- Government officials should invite their leaders and witnesses around the area for questioning.

One of the marks of jungle justice is the punishment of the innocent alongside the guilty. Shame on the state government for stooping so low. This action is like banning Islam for the crises in the north. How silly!

Autos › Convenient And Affordable Transport Solution Wanted by Seun(mod): 9:45am On Jan 29, 2007
Hello,

I have a little dilemma involving this issue of transportation. I need something to take me around, but I don't think I can afford to buy and maintain a car, neither do I feel comfortable with the public transport system.

This affects my business a lot (I can hardly move around) so I wonder if there's a solution between the two extremes. Something less expensive than buying my car and more convenient and flexible than taxis/buses.

Thanks.

Digging up the dirty aspects of history cannot foster any positive feelings. It can only make us angry. If I was making a historical movie, I would totally exclude the chains and minimize the slavery aspect.

Politics › Re: Is Nigeria A Failed State? by Seun(mod): 8:32am On Jan 29, 2007
Thanks to the "disaster" of privatization, every bus conductor and market women in Nigeria now has a mobile phone. This is in stark contrast with the "glorious" NITEL era when only the rich had phones. (I'm being sarcastic here).

The private sector is a better steward of resources than the public sector. In the public sector, if you don't perform, you can just keep asking for more money. In the private sector, if you don't perform, someone else takes your place.

Mass produced cars have a much greater effect on our lives. They are able to reach the common man. Why develop a car that only a few people will ever drive? Why make a "good" (i.e. expensive) film that no one is watching?
