Thank you, Damsal. It's almost as if what makes the difference in showbiz is what shouldn't really matter. That's why I regard the entertainment business as a strange business.

BusinessRe: Is Google Going Too Far? by Seun(mod): 10:05am On Jul 08, 2006
Zahymaka is right they are too big to be taken over.
Zahymaka statement had absolutely nothing to do the take-over issue. You are arguing off point. wink

What he said was, "The last time I checked, Google's market capitalization was $118.32 billion (source: Wikipedia) up from 2005's $80 (source: InsideGoogle), so it's big enough to take on others." This was in response to the statement, "the other companies that are richer than google might come up with an idea to pull it down".

-----
By the way, I stumbled accross an article by a Paypal employee about the viability Google Checkout.

According to the article,
1. Google is bad at fighting fraud.
2. Google is now distracted. For real.
3. Google is bad at customer service.
4. Google finally picked the wrong battle.
5. This failure will cause their best engineers to leave.
http://xpaypal..com/2006/06/5-reasons-why-google-checkout-is.html

I don't believe that Google can't defeat the Paypal/Ebay empire. Actually, they can, but not this way. To enter the Ebay market, they need to develop a new auction site and integrate it with their search engine. When that has been done, the next step will be to setup a "stored value online payment system" exactly like Paypal.
BusinessRe: Starting A Community Newspaper by Seun(mod): 6:22pm On Jul 07, 2006
Community newspapers are better than national dailes because their adverts are better targetted. You can advertise to just the people in your town with a community newspaper, instead of wasting money on national ads.

I wish someone else would attempt to make a helpful contribution. jedkaz, how far with your project?

The last time I checked, Google's market capitalization was $118.32 billion
Market capitalization means nothing. What matters is cash flow. You cannot spend your market capitalization, can you? Capitalization is not even paper money; it's just an extrapolated figure based on current share price.

BusinessRe: Is Google Going Too Far? by Seun(mod): 3:51pm On Jul 07, 2006
Gmail as a good project because it gives google another avenue to display ads and make money.

I notice that once a company has discovered a way to make a lot of money, most of the other projects they engage in will tend to be unprofitable. Example? Microsoft: without Windows XP and MS Office they are nothing.

The advantage of only spending time on profitable projects is that the time, energy, and resources you don't waste in building 'cool' projects could be spent on more useful products that people are willing to pay for.
BusinessWhy Is The Entertainment Industry So Different? by Seun(mod): 3:43pm On Jul 07, 2006
Why is the entertainment business is not a conventional one?

- Genevieve Nnaji, barely a millionaire in naira, can pull a bigger crowd than the world's richest man.

- People who design and manufacture sophisticated digital cameras, mobile phones and computers don't insist on writing their names on the products, but a movie must include the names of the hundreds of people who assisted.

- When you buy a software CD-ROM, you don't care about the lead programmer, but when you buy a Music CD, your primary concern is the name of the lead singer.

- Most employees work for salary just to make a living, but entertainers are expected to be stinkingly rich.

- The entertainment industry deliberately creates celebrities, and then has to pay a fortune to maintain them.

- The industry uses trial and error insead of scientific or statistical methods to analyse the market.

Why can't the entertainment be like any other business?

- Why can't entertainers be paid on a salary basis so they can enjoy stability and be replaced easily?

- Why can't the music and movie industries use generic brands like "Solid Music (TM)" instead of celebrity-based brands like "2face Idibia" to sell music and movies?

- Why can't the entertainment companies completely own the work they pay people to produce? (no "credits"wink

Well if I am going into this industry, I will treat it like any other business.

ComputersRe: Virus Problems On Windows Systems In Network by Seun(mod): 3:06pm On Jul 07, 2006
Even if the shared folder on a Linux server has the virus, it won't affect the Linux system. You just need to scan the shared folder with the first Windows system you clean, so other Windows systems won't be affected.

Once you finish with this process, make sure you update the antivirus regularly and the Windows updates too.

Car TalkRe: Abuja Car Race by Seun(mod): 2:49pm On Jul 07, 2006
The novelty factor is in your favor; this will be the first car race in Nigeria. What a nice idea!

The most important thing is to have spectators that are valuable to your sponsors. If car manufacturers feel that by winning your race they will be able to convince people to buy their cars, they'll sponsor the race.

What about the issue of safety? You'll need to spend some money on accident insurance. Ouch.

RomanceRe: Graduate Weds Non Graduate: Is It Possible? by Seun(mod): 2:42pm On Jul 07, 2006
That makes sense. When a man feels inferior, he will mess up the marriage at the end. But I think, if I am very rich, there will be no reason for me to feel inferior to a lady just because she has a piece of paper that I don't have.
ComputersRe: Virus Problems On Windows Systems In Network by Seun(mod): 2:25pm On Jul 07, 2006
What you are facing is a worm that uses the network to spread. Your Mcafee antivirus is obviously not updated, and you probably don't install the latest Windows Updates on your Windows XP systems. Hmmm.

Here are some steps I'll suggest:
- Download AVG antivirus using a Linux system.
- Make sure you also download the file containing the latest updates.
- Format a FLASH drive or diskette with your Linux system
- Copy the AVG antivirus installer and updates into the drive.
- Disconnect all infected Windows systems on your network.

For each infected Windows PC:
- Boot it up in Safe Mode
(without networking).
- Uninstall McAfee or any other antivirus.
- Install AVG antivirus software and the latest updates.
- Scan your hard drive(s) using the AVG.
- Scan the shared folder (if it has not yet been scanned).
- Reboot the system if prompted, and then
- Connect it to the network once more.

Using the above procedure, you'll be able to deal with the problem without reformatting any system. I have used it this system to clean a laptop with such a virus, so please make sure you use it. wink
BusinessRe: Is Google Going Too Far? by Seun(mod): 2:11pm On Jul 07, 2006
There are only three things that Google needs to achieve, really:
1) Sign up more publishers to display google ads.
2) Get more business people to advertise with Google.
3) Create a competitor to Ebay by using the search engine to drive traffic.

The others things they are doing? that's just geeks gone wild. Hackers love to waste money on 'cool' but useless projects. Instead of being customer-focussed, they are focussed on their own egos.
