Best Rapper Alive Competition Feels Slim Shady Posted Mon Oct 13, 2008 1:26am PDT by Billy Johnson, Jr. in Hip-Hop Media Training If you feel like there's a pun in the headline of this blog post, good. Last week Vibe magazine announced that Eminem had won its Best Rapper Alive competition, a NCAA-style tournament that pitted the "top" 64 MCs against each other. (See the list of the 64 nominees.) The online contest polled users over a 5-week period. During the first week, the 64 competing rappers were paired off and users were asked to select the best 32 artists. The second week, that group of 32 lyricists was also grouped in twos and the voters picked their favorite 16. Over the subsequent weeks, the list dwindled down to the last b-boys standing, Jay-Z and Eminem. Eminem won by a landslide of 69 percent, compared to Jay-Z's 31 percent. " The results have sparked heated discussions. Before getting into my opinion of the crowned champ, I am way curious as to how a Best Rapper Alive contest can include the likes of Soulja Boy Tell ‘Em, Shawty Lo and Flo Rida, but not list lyrical geniuses Rakim, MC Lyte, Chuck D, KRS-One or Slick Rick. I'm 38, so yes, I'm repping a different era. But if I am to take the title Best Rapper Alive literally, I say, these guys are alive and frankly can still put to shame the majority of the 64 artists who have made it on the ballot. Maybe instead they could call this list, Best Rapper To Recently Release An Album. I'm sure some of my questions will be answered in the November 2008 issue of Vibe, on newsstands October 21. In this issue, the Best Rapper Alive staff will explain the contest in detail. I must add that I respect the publication, still having in my possession its 1994 premiere issue with Treach of Naughty By Nature on the cover and having written freelance articles for the magazine from 2000 to 2006. I just don't get the criteria. I understand that the results were driven by the voters, but the brackets used for voting are suspicious. Take for example the following pairings that caused upsets during the first round of voting: Lil' Kim vs. Lauryn Hill Lupe Fiasco vs. Q-Tip Mos Def vs. Talib Qweli Ghostface Killah vs. Raekwon Method Man vs. Redman Common vs. Black Thought Pairings like these assured that six of the aforementioned rappers were not going to make it to round two. Each of those artists should have made it to the second round. And in other instances, favored artists were matched with MCs who had no chance of winning the first round: Andre 3000 vs. Dizzee Rascal Eminem vs. Soulja Boy Lil' Wayne vs. Trina T.I. vs. Shawty Lo Ludacris vs. Young Dro Are you kidding? I think Dizzee Rascal is dope, but could he possibly get more popular votes than ANDRE 3000? Have the majority of the voters even heard of Dizzee? Soulja Boy, Trina, Shawty Lo, and Young Dro against those guys? Is this poll even real? Out of 32 pairings, the first round only had a handful of legitimate groupings: Cam'ron vs. Juelz Santana Fabolous vs. Cassidy Lil' Boosie vs. Webbie Lloyd Banks vs. Young Buck Chamillionaire vs. Paul Wall I realize the difficulty and pressure that lies in compiling lists. As a journalist, it's something that you don't take lightly because you know you're going to get called out if your list is wack. I'm feeling bamboozled by this one. I consider Eminem to be one of the greatest MCs to have ever rhymed. He has an undeniable gift of storytelling. He can freestyle. He's passionate, and is one of the few who is blessed with the ability to simultaneously go straight mega pop and still reach the heads. He's top 10 without question. I'm in one of those moods and can go and on about this as if it was something important. So I'll stop and let some of my favorites conclude my argument. The N40 billion Nigerian Communications Satellite (NigComSat) designed, developed, manufactured and launched by the Chinese is the second Chinese-made satellite to fail in orbit in two years. NigComSat, which was launched with fanfare just 18 months ago in China, has become the second out of four satellites launched so far by the Chinese to have failed and both failures have involved the electrical systems on the satellite. THISDAY has gathered that China’s first DFH-4 satellite also failed in orbit in late 2006. NigComSat is the second DFH-4 satellite built by the Chinese. China's first DFH-4 satellite called SinoSat 2 designed to provide Chinese communication services to the Pacific also failed in orbit and was described as the worst in-space breakdown suffered by the Chinese. Chinese officials had in November 2006 confirmed that SinoSat 2, a new communication satellite which it launched October same year, had failed and would have to be replaced. Sinosat-2 was launched October 29, but one of the spacecraft’s solar panels apparently failed to deploy properly, depriving the spacecraft of the power needed to operate. The officials had also disclosed then that a replacement for SinoSat-2 would take at least three years to build and launch. The DFH-4 bus is a high-power system developed to form a foundation for new Chinese civil and military communication satellites as well as foreign sales. THISDAY gathered that the NigcomSat1, a communication satellite which is now missing in orbit, might have been built to fail from the very beginning. This is because its manufactured mechanical components from the start had issues. A few months after its launch, the International Communications Union was said to have written to Nigerian authorities alerting them of the fact that NigComSat was not sitting in its expected position in orbit. Since positioning is critical, that singular fact showed that it was a matter of time before things go awry. If NigComSat could not stay in its exact position and it could not be maneuvered to stay in its proper place, it meant there was no control and it was only a matter of time before it will go burst. Following THISDAY’s report that the satellite was missing in orbit, the Federal Government had said it “parked due to loss of energy” as it was not being recharged. The management of NigComSat had also admitted that the satellite was experiencing technical problems due to a fault with the Solar Panel causing outage. The Minister of State for Science and Technology, Dr. Alhassan Zaku, had informed Nigerians that the satellite developed a technical fault that resulted in the inability of the operational batteries to be charged by the solar panels. The Voice of America (VOA) reported at the weekend that the satellite had fallen out of space. http://www.thisdayonline.com/nview.php?id=128479 |

Nigerian satellite fails in space NigComSat's website The satellite has developed power trouble A multi-million dollar Nigerian satellite launched in May 2007 has been shut down to prevent it spinning out of control and damaging others in orbit. Chinese-built NigComSat-1 cost the African oil producer $340m (£228m). The Nigerian government said insurance would pay for a replacement and Nigerians should still be proud of the country's satellite programme. But telecoms experts told the BBC it was a "white elephant in space" and the whole operation was a "debacle". NigComSat-1 was launched 18 months ago to much fanfare from the government, but it has been mired in controversy ever since. On Tuesday, controllers shut the satellite down because it was having problems with its power supply, the government announced. The satellite was meant to provide communications for government agencies and broadband internet. 'Worthy investment' "This has been a real debacle from day one," a telecoms engineer told the BBC. Nigeria has exported its electricity generation problems to space Joke doing the rounds in Nigeria The engineer, who works as a consultant for a multinational communications company, did not want to be named. The satellite was limited because the type of frequency it used was disturbed by clouds in the atmosphere, and did not work properly in Nigeria's rainy season or during the Harmattan, when clouds of dust blow down from the Sahara, he said. The satellite also operated on frequencies already allocated to other companies and interfered with other providers' equipment. But Information Minister John Odey denied the satellite was not worth investing in. "No technology can be a waste of money," he said. "It is a worthy investment, and Nigerians should see it as desirable. It has served a purpose and will continue to do so." Power trouble Local media initially reported that the satellite had "gone missing". But on Wednesday Minister of State for Science and Technology Alhassan Zaku told journalists it had lost power and had to be "parked, like you would park a car". "If it wasn't parked and it lost all its power there would be no energy to even move it and it would be like a loose cannon and would keep rolling about and hit other satellites in the orbit," he told reporters. According to analysts, Nigeria has made nearly $2 trillion in oil revenues over the last 30 years, but its population are mostly poor. Africa's most populous nation lacks basic infrastructure like power and water, and many Nigerians thought the satellite showed the government did not have its priorities right. The news that the satellite could not get enough power to run has led to jokes that, as one e-mail doing the rounds put it: Nigeria has "exported its electricity generation problems to space". http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/africa/7726951.stm |
hmmmmmm, this thread is most interesting.but i did like to sound my opinion. firstly, am not a fan of Nas.i don't think i listen to him and wanna press the replay button. So since have no info on him,i cant compare. Secondly, between Dmx and Eminem,i prefer Dmx.Eminem is good, darn good but i find it difficult to place him above Dmx.i have all Eminem albums and i can comfortably say he doesnt have as much classics as Dmx. as for Em winning best rapper alive,i guess the parameters used in deciding that factor is flawed, abegi na beans finally,am not a guru when it comes to rap but i know good lines when i see one.this response shoulda been after u guys argument about Dmx and EM but i just got the chance to post. |

i believe u guys are browsing faster now.SAT3 had a major fibre problem and most providers switched to their back-up,thats y browsing speed slowed in the first place.then SAT3 was shut down to repair the damage, thats why there was like a total beakdown in internet communications. by now, i believe if u guys have not reached optimum browsing speed,u will get there asap. destruction of cable pathway underwater is by no means the fault of Nitel or should i say Transcorp.blame the ships on highseas dropping their anchors indiscriminately. |
