My two-year-old daughter is having a painful swollen gum which causes her pain when brushing her teeth, experienced mamas, please could be done to it.
Please take her to a good dental clinic around you as soon as you can.

Meanwhile, please rinse her mouth with warm water and salt (about half a level teaspoon in about 150mls of warm water).

So she doesn't swallow too much salt, place her mouth over a plastic bowl so as your are flushing the water runs out of her mouth into the bowl.

You can buy many 10mls syringes.

Remove the needle and use the syringe to flush her mouth copiously about 6 times a day for a week.

Pls also give her 2.5mls of vitamin c thrice daily for a week.

Can dentist make a yellowish teeth to white?
Firstly, normal healthy adult teeth can vary in colour from white to off white to cream or yellow.

Baby/children teeth are whiter.

It is nature, that is how it should be and the emphasis should be on clean, healthy teeth and not colour like most of us tend to believe.

Now, the teeth can also be stained yellow or dark brown or similar colour especially due to poor oral hygiene and diet (tomato paste, coke, Fanta, coffee, HERBS!)

In such instances, Dentists or Dental hygienists can clean your teeth to make them whiter and brighter with an ultrasonic scaler; this procedure is painless (though there may be sensitivity in some people) and not too time consuming. Price ranges from 6,000 to 20,000 or more depending on the centre.

You can also have bleaching done though I don't really advice this unless it is very necessary.

The effect of bleaching isn't permanent for life as the teeth will still get discoloured but one can always repeat the bleaching process (though not very often).

Thanks again.

You are saying government hospitals stop at porcelain fused to metal?

Does gold cost more or less than emax/zirconia?

How strong is porcelain? Is it noticeable visually?

Thanks
Gold is not that strong and it is mostly for Anterior teeth or aesthetics.

Gold crowns will cost between 80,000-120,000 or more depending on the centre.

Setting up labs that can fabricate Emax and zirconia crowns are expensive and this is Nigeria.

Ordinary soap and cotton wool is a big issue in many government hospitals.

Porcelain (though aesthetically pleasing and can appear very similar to natural teeth) is fragile and on its own isn't very good for Molars because of chewing force, that's why the zirconia and Emax as well as other forms of materials are being researched into, used and developed.

It won't work, I can assure you. grin

Add some more to the money and visit a good dental clinic.

Most of those brand names toothpastes are just ripping people off.

They don't even contain fluoride and don't protect the teeth from decay.

Hello ma.

Big thanks for all the dental advice you have been giving on nairaland

Please how much would it cost (range) to do a root canal for my right lower 2nd molar? Also the above 80k is for what type of crown?

Thanks,
Thank you very much (really).

A lower molar root canal can be anything from 35,000 total package (Government Hospital) to as much as 150,000 (private clinics).

Rcts are technique sensitive and time consuming hence the cost.

So please make sure you are choosing a good centre and politely share your concerns with your Dentist.

The 80,000 crown is a porcelain fused to metal crown.

There are more aesthetically pleasing crowns now like the Emax and Zirconia crowns that are also durable but they will cost at least 120,000-300,000 and mostly in Private centres, I don't know of any Government Hospital that does them for now, not sure about Luth though.

Regards

Smartdoctor:
the method used in tooth polish is enough to make you lose a lot of mineral elements from your tooth especially calcium. And if care is not taking you have to be careful of using it to cut strong food substance after the procedure
You guys just type anything and feel you know it all.

Professional scaling and polishing done in a dental clinic is with an ultrasonic scaler which uses the energy from sound to dislodge calcified or hard 'dirts and stains' from the surface of the teeth.

It can't/ does not cause demineralization, I.e you don't lose calcium or any mineral from the teeth and it doesn't affect your diet and you can chew well after.

It helps to keep the teeth and gums clean and healthy and helps with mouth odour too.

Also contrary to many posts here, it is quite affordable and can be from 5,200 to 10,000 and above depending on the environment. Nigerians always seem to have money for enjoyment and everything except their health undecided

It is also very beneficial and almost everyone should be encouraged to clean their teeth regularly (the ideal thing is every 6 months)

Hard bristled toothbrushes and charcoal or charcoal based toothpastes are also too abrasive and can wear teeth down with long term or repeated use.

Many home bleaching kits as sold online or in beauty parlours and pharmacies are also actually dangerous and their whitening effect is never permanent, especially due to the nature of our diet in Nigeria (we take a lot of coloured foods). Hence with time, the teeth will get darker.

White teeth shouldn't be the goal, clean and healthy teeth is the goal.

Most overly White teeth you see online e.g Davido is not whitening.
White coloured Veneers were made and cemented onto the teeth surface to give that bright white colour, no teeth bleaching agent will give you such.

I am sure if more people knew about scaling and polishing, they would embrace it and we will have healthier, cleaner and bad-odour-free mouths

I did root canal procedure on the 2 teeth in 2017, went for check up and was re advised to crown it to avoid breaking.
The cost is pricey hence where I searched for the cost online and found this thread.

Any advise please

You should crown them, else they may break and you may end up needing extractions.

Crowns cost around 80,000 in Lasuth, Luth.

Luth is less stressful.

Private hospitals cost more but are faster, you can walk in and practically start your procedure that day.

Pls when you saw a Dentist, what was the conclusion or what do you mean by no serious solution undecided ?

Please go to a good dental clinic around you, let the teeth be examined, those that can be filled should be filled while those that can't be saved can be extracted or you can have a root canal done.

Any procedure you opt for will be pain-free if done well.

You need to take care of your teeth; regular dental checks, prompt treatment of dental issues, brushing adequately and appropriately with a fluoridated toothpaste and reducing sugary foods and drinks.

Best wishes.
HealthRe: Artificial Teeth by Sewasaunt(f): 9:21am On Nov 11, 2022
What you need is a DENTURE and it is less than 10,000 in Government hospitals in Lagos, e.g Lasuth is 6,500 as at today November 11,2022.

Your mouth will be measured, the colour of your teeth will be selected, and you will go back for it after some days.

DENTURES are removable, you can eat with it and it is easy to clean and use but it is breakable and not convenient for some people because it covers part of the gums. I have attached a picture in case you have not seen one before.

There are some other options, these are way more expensive but you can save towards it and consider it with time.

1. A BRIDGE which won't cover the gums, just the teeth beside the missing one

2. AN IMPLANT, which is inserted into the bone of the missing tooth

HealthRe: Artificial Teeth by Sewasaunt(f): 8:34pm On Nov 10, 2022
Simply visit a Dental clinic, a mould/impression of your mouth will be taken and a denture(artificial tooth) will be made for you.

It's less than 10,000 in any Government hospital, a bit more expensive in Private clinics

My question is_hope I am safe and doing well.
You are doing well Ma'am but it doesn't hurt to add pregnancy supplements e.g pregnacare pregmum etc unless you are reacting to them.

There are many schools of thought and researches on this.

Growing a baby is tasking on the mothers body and many nutrients are needed to help grow and nurture the foetus e.g folic acid, fatty acids, calcium etc and diet alone may not provide those nutrients especially if you are struggling with nausea and vomiting.

Mamas, I've been having severe pains for days now.

On the other hand, hubby is upset saying I've been lying down too much. This pregnancy has been tough on me from the get-go when I was bleeding profusely and advised to observe strict bed rest. It's been from one complication to another. I just wish I could make him understand.
Concerning the pain, you can't use anything more than paracetamol, please just try to work with your doctor.

I have had pain while being pregnant and it was one of the worst moments of my life, (I visited 4 different hospitals, was admitted on different occasions and felt so useless and alone despite having my husband, mum and sisters with me) and I really can't imagine you going through it and still looking for how to make your husband understand.

Please ma, advocate for yourself, your health comes first, don't let anyone add his wahala to your condition.

I felt very bad reading your post, I pray God touches your husband, you are in a very fragile moment now and you need him more than ever.

Please try to rest as much as you can, if you have other kids, try to make convenient plans for them.

I always tell people that each human being is inherently selfish and will mostly do what pleases them, if roles were reversed and your husband was the one in pain, do you think he will be saying the same thing?

Go to the hospitals, many women are on their own or being cared for by siblings and friends while men will be surrounded by their wives, sisters or mum.

You can ask him to read about pain in pregnancy and other complications online and i hope it makes a difference.

Best wishes Mama,
You've got this.

It will be well

Thanks for your input. I am not in lagos. The doctor i met in the federal hospital here runs his private practice and only comes once a week. He's the one that referred me to go do another scan outside and also requested 60k to remove two.

He said he'll remove two first and then the remaining two later. But the last doctor pressuring me said i can remove all four at once.

Is Luth charge of 25k for only one because i was thinking of traveling down to Nnamdi Azikiwe teaching hospital anambra?

I just need to know how long i might have before the pain comes again.

Here is the scan result
Please, I think you should try the teaching hospital or a trusted private practice.

Run as far as you can from the person claiming you can remove all four at once.

Just with local anaesthesia? All four impacted molars? I don't think that's a smart thing to do.

I can't predict and its impossible to predict when next you may have pain but I'll advice you to sort that tooth soon.

If you look at that xray, you will see that the impacted tooth is lying on and applying pressure on the tooth in front of it, if it keeps getting worse, that tooth too may go bad and you will now need to take out two teeth. It won't be immediate, it may be many years from now, but it's a possibility.

My mantra is always "the earlier the better".
HealthRe: I need Advice On Impacted Wisdom Tooth issue by Sewasaunt(f): 10:17am On Sep 16, 2022
Hello Sir,

I guess you already understand what an impacted tooth is and you have experienced the pain first hand (and how crazy it can be).

Now, please ignore the Dentist that keeps calling, in fact I am embarrassed on his behalf, he's obviously more concerned about money and that is very unprofessional. He may not even be a Dentist, I can assure you that no qualified Dentist especially in Lagos will charge 60,000 for 4 surgical extractions.

Also, does this dentist intend to remove all the 4 impacted teeth at once? It is not standard practice to do multiple surgical extractions in one visit. It is one at a time, else it will be too traumatic for the patient.

You should only do it if and when you are fully convinced.

Please which state are you in?

If you are in Lagos, please try Luth at Idi Araba, Mushin, Lasuth at Ikeja or the dental clinic in Ojokoro primary health Centre(this one wont take too much time).

The hospitals may take your time (waiting time and booking time) but you can be assured of good care and the surgical extraction won't exceed 25,000.

There are also some good private centres, please ask and be sure before you go ahead.

It is good to remove all four, and it is the standard practice in the US (where it is done under general anaesthesia) but here in Nigeria, I advice patients to remove the symptomatic one (the one paining you).

You can never say never in medicine so the others may never hurt you and they may hurt, no one can say.

Whatever you decide, please know that the one hurting may still hurt later and can be worse than your previous episode.

Concerning what your dad said, yes- people are different and experiences differ. I don't know where he received care or when it was nor who it was, even the most experienced Dentist has hard cases sometimes.

Extractions should be painless (a bit of discomfort, yes but minimal pain)

Don't endanger your health because of fear.

Best wishes

Sorry about your loss.

Though we need to address the issue of late presentation to hospitals and dislike for medical personnel.

Many Nigerians will blame all others except themselves and never admit that they could or can do better.

Did your friend go to the hospital early?

Nigerians will stay home until the condition is hopeless, they will try all sorts of herbs, prayer houses, stem cell drugs, even on Nairaland here, there are many with such views.

Nigerians that will claim not to have money for health care but are everywhere buying aso ebis, throwing needless parties and filling up bars and restaurants each night.

I agree that medics can do better but Nigerians need to learn to do better too.

If he died at home, y'all would have said it was spiritual.

If it was in a church, y'all would have said it was God's will or a spiritual battle he lost.

They probably took him very late to the hospital, I can imagine how weak or serious the case was that he died the very next day, but hey, let's blame medical staff.

Hello Ma'am,

Sorry this is coming late.

Please where in Lagos do you stay? Or which areas will you prefer to have the treatment done?

Lasuth and Luth are good for braces and the most affordable you may get (roughly 450,000 including x-rays) but they are really time wasting.

Some General Hospitals have Orthodontists too, there are many private Dental Clinics too but try to check reviews and ask so you don't spend money and not get the desired results.

She will be starting daycare once I resume, please I need advice from experienced Mama's on how to package the breast milk for her till I pick her up from the daycare.
Hello Ma'am,

Firstly, let me say it won't be easy but it will be totally worth it.

What I usually do?

1. Get a good creche, ask around, do your research. You need a clean, good creche with a safe environment and pleasant staff.

2. Is your electricity supply good? Do you have a freezer?

3. Get milk storage bags and a breast pump. Mama Zaynie on Nairaland sells, the manual pump is cheap and effective, the storage bags are cheap and good too. You can also get a cooler bag if you have enough money.

4. Read about breast milk pumping and storage.

5. I pump regularly, even while feeding with one breast, I pump with the second breast.

You can also express with your hands, just make sure your hands are clean and all the cups and bottles and breast pump and it's parts are clean too.

6. The more you express milk, the emptier the breasts get and it will signal the brain to make more milk.

You can pump when you get back from work and every hour until you sleep.

I pump at times during the night when the baby wakes and in the morning before leaving home.

7. Now you have your milk right?

Pour into bottles or milk storage bags in small quantities that can be finished at once or within 2 hours and place in your freezer or fridge (depending on the age, e.g 60mls, 90mls,120mls max) so it doesn't waste if the baby can't finish that bottle

After expressing and without placing it in a fridge or freezer, breast milk can last for up to 4 hours though I prefer 3 hours max. They can give the baby that one first.

8. When you are going out in the morning, pack your diaper bag and pack the milk in the cooler bag, you can place an ice pack in it.

9. I did a through research online and wrote out salient points and taped it to my baby's bag then and also explained to the staff (they were wonderful people I should add)

* Take out a bag or bottle at least 30mins before feeding, don't place it in hot water to warm it.
Just take it out and place it in a bowl of water.

* Don't shake breast milk, the fat will always separate from the milk and you will see it as a thick film over the milk, just swirl it gently and don't shake as shaking denatures the milk.

* Discard unused milk, don't place it back in the fridge or freezer once you have brought it out of the bag or freezer and thawed it.

10. Breastmilk contains fat and can breed bacteria, so make sure you have many bottles so they don't have to reuse bottles because they may not wash them thoroughly.

I usually wash and sterilize all the bottles and milk bags thoroughly myself in the evenings after work and dry them.

Do you understand?
Have any other questions?
Please let me know

Best wishes

shalom family, please kindly share your experiences or knowledge of the effects of taking ginger tea.

second what the ways of prevent and controlling chronic nausea
1. I never drank ginger tea but my prenatal drug contained ginger (pregmum) and I used to chew ginger and leave a small piece in my mouth, it only gave little relief and I got tired of it grin but you or your wife (your profile is male) can try it, with caution though and in small amounts. Ginger isn't entirely safe in Pregnancy.

2. Nausea, nausea , nausea, it is well.
I used vitamin b6 and an anti nausea drug which made me sleepy a lot and I was working during my first trimester so I won't say it was a win win situation.

Not to sound pessimistic but one may not get complete relief- it's part of the beautiful package sadly. Hopefully it reduces after the first trimester, mine always lasts till I give birth cry

Pls see a doctor and try to keep up with appointments, they may say no appointments until 13 weeks but try to press for one.

Also, avoid triggers of nausea (I used to wear face masks everywhere and avoided strong scents at home (no perfume, no fried meat and fish.

Passing by restaurants and gutters could be quite distressing and made me nauseous, that's where the face mask comes in.

Eating may be a huge task too, try taking cold water or hot tea and eat in bits as the body allows.

I am sure other mums will come in with tips too.

The use of "dental sealants" and

It isn't a common procedure too but composite restoration per tooth ranges from 5,000-8,000 in Government hospitals and way higher in private clinics

Yes, for people with good oral hygiene/health.

No, for people with many dental issues, they need to be monitored regularly till they are given an all clear and no longer need regular dental visits.

Many of the points raised here are valid but not strange, especially in a setting like ours.

It is mainly developed countries and some money desperate private Dental clinics that give unneeded treatments, especially to those who have insurance.

Is it in Nigeria where people don't even have money for much needed extractions that you want to start think of sealing fissures and more aesthetic treatments?
