You gave example of Kano. Kano is not Benin. They select their Emir from a list of candidates from the ruling houses. Benin doesn't operate that system. Like I told you b4, the next oba of Benin is the first son of the current oba. The oba of Benin is by birth. No governor can change that. It is not based on the whims and caprices of a sitting governor. The oba of Benin is the only first class king that is crowned this way (by birth), I stand to be corrected though.

Point of correction, it is not only Ọba of Benin, even Elegushi rule by every first born

Problem with Yorubas is because many of their their Obas are always being embarrassed and disgraced and dethroned for the past hundreds of years till date they think Oba of Benin can be treated like that lol.

Stop deceiving yourself. Oba of Benin was once dethrone and banished to calabar. Yes google it, you will see it there.

It is only Oonirisa that have never been dethrone before and I say it, nobody can.

You are indeed funny.. you saw a sentence in one document that said Benin kings paid homage to Ife kings and you are jubilating. keep it up.
I won’t argue Benin’s Greatness and Might with you because you already know that.

I’m only wondering why u are praising small Ife instead of Oyo.. in your small mind was Ife imperial to Oyo too?

Ifè gave birth to Oyo and all the Yoruba First class town including Ilé Ibinu

I know that is an achievement these days in Yoruba land, to end up with an Igbo woman. Why can't other tribes brag of wedding a Yoruba woman too?, of course no one wants to have a Tinubu lookalike for an offspring, how now?? grin

You guys always think you are special or something with your arrogant and pride like attitude. Seriously if left for me. I will choose Yoruba or Delta ladies, cuz they are best housewife. Beauty is not everything but character.

Lol, wake up from your self-induced sleep. The Yorubas are not your mate in all metrics of intelligence.

How many Igbos can hold a front line music event across the world with sold out concerts? We have Davido, Wizkid, both of who sold out the O2 arena.

Even Nairamarey a new artist is holding concert around the world and getting paid globally. What about our new Kiss Daniel, Joeboy, Fireboy, etc.

When the Yoruba artist were busy sponsoring each other to reach limelight, your Igbo artist were busy being selfish and projecting themselves alone. How many Igbos has Phyno help ? Do you see how many people Olamide helped blow? What about the new Nairamarley, he already signed two artist who will Inturn blow and sign other people.

You should start competing with Hausa/Fulanis in the music and movies scenes because the Yorubas are far above you to even compare!

Thank you, you are just on point. Fact and truth.

When you travel all most all the countries in Africa. Igbo culture, Igbo greetings like Igwe(king), Igbo movies industry ( Nollywood) and Igbo gospel music is all that you will see and hear on their TVs and radios station. Flavor song Ada Ada is a national anthem to Ghanaians , Kenyan etc weddings.

Bros you might be a bit slight right, cuz I have travelled to most African countries. When it comes to music, it is Wizkid (Yoruba), Davido (Yoruba), Olamide (Yoruba), Kiss Daniel (Yoruba) , Flavour (Ibo) , Phino (Ibo) are most play songs.

This is what happens when history is not taught in schools. He wanted to rule? Did he not have the right to contest as a Nigerian? Was it not Awolowo and his cohorts that bungled his ambition and sowed the seeds for tribalism. Besides when he was contesting in the West, Philip Effiong was in the east and almost won. It's because of your myopic thinking that you guys were not able to decipher Azikwe's level of thinking. Because while being a nationalist, the rat poison drinker was spreading tribalism with Ahmadu Bello. That's why Africa always remembers Azikiwe and only Yorubas remember Awolowo.

Africa remember Azikiwe , but most of you guys parents benefit from LEGACIES OF Awolowo, like free education, good amenities, development of western regions, best education infrastructure, etc.

If Awolowo was made president, Nigeria would have been like Europe.

All this you say still doesn’t make Ife an imperial power or Ooni an imperial majesty..
Any king can style themselves Imperial majesty..

As for comparing Benin to Ife I won’t argue that with you because you already know Ife was never an empire or a force to reckon with.

Please read this, even your His Royal knows the truth, even address OONI OF IFE AS IMPERIAL MAJESTY (https://tribuneonlineng.com/when-oba-of-benin-visited-ooni-of-ife/)

You are making Ife look like an empire or one mighty kingdom which it never was.

The title of “imperial majesty” is meant for emperors and conquerors neither of which Ooni of Ife is..

In comparison the Oba of Benin is an imperial majesty..
You are talking about official title, imperial majesty is not an official title given by Nigerian government

I don’t know the meaning of “Oghene” in Benin language but since u know Benin language you tell me the meaning abi..

If you don't know, maybe you should go and investigate. Do you know that any Crown Prince of Benin Kingdom need to come to Ìfẹ́ for Spiritual seclusion, before he can be crown King. Have you asked yourself why.

In history of hierarchy, the lower goes to higher for permission before being crown not other way around.

1. You said I was making Ife look like an empire or a mighty kingdom. grin

Well, let me shock you. My name is NOT Margaret Plass. My name is NOT Erediauwa I. Neither is my name William Fagg. Nor am I a curator, authority or history expert at the British Museum.

Take it up with these authotities and experts, who noted clearly that the kings of Benin paid homage to Ile Ife, and that they regard the Oonis of Ife as gods.

I was clearly citing the experts and authorities only grin

BTW, I would love to see you cite experts rather than vomit your personal imaginations. Thanks.

2. Yes, like I have noted above:

"An emperor/Empress is a king/queen of a higher and elevated status.

All emperors/empreses are kings/queens, but NOT all kings/queens are emperor/empresses.

The Ooni of Ife is styled as His Imperial Majesty. The Oba of Benin is NOT."

3. I am still waiting for your evidence from any serious text (of course not from Nairaland or a random Facebook post) of where the Oba of Benin was ever styled as "His Imperial Majesty". Never! He dared not.

4. Furthermore, "official" means "one who holds or is invested with an office" [Merriam-Webster Dictionary].

No where does this definition say it must be a country's government. A royal styling becomes "official" as soon as the palace sanctions it. May be it's hightime you sued all your English teachers and request refunds.

And as far as I know the Benin palace never uses "His Imperial Majesty" for the Oba of Benin. They dared not.

The Ife palace on the other hand uses "His Imperial Majesty" exclusively. Benin dared not.

5. All along I had thought I was having an exchange with an Edo child who knows even the most basic stuffs of his language and history. It's a shame you don't know why Omo N'Oba N'Edo Erediauwa I admitted that the kings of Ife were known in Benin kingdom as "Oghene".

I have read most of your comments, thanks for the enlightenment. Please also add to those children of indomie generation that does not know history.

Oba Ewuare, during his visit to the ooni of ife, in his speech which was quoted in the tribune thus:
“I want to say it gives me great pleasure to visit His Imperial Majesty today in countinuation of my nationwide thank you call to traditional rulers, and other eminent personalities that graced my coronation on October 20, 2016, which by the divine grace of God is also my birthday. This visit has long been planned but due traditional and other palace engagements in Benin, it is coming at this time. My post-coronation thank-you tour commenced with a visit last year to President Buhari and the Sultan of Sokoto. I thank God for making this visit possible.

The only kingdom, already versed in trade of courier services and money transfers from abroad and vice versa.

The only kingdom in Nigeria whose King moves around with 700 entourage.

Because the Ooni was submissive to the colonial master. The Oba Ewuare was never submissive to their indirect ruling system. The Ooni was Vulnerable and an ass licker. The Oba knew that going to exile in Calabar after being betrayed was better than being submissive.

Who told you, the history says that. The colonial respect OONI OF IFE. To the extent that the first time OONIRISA left his Palace when there are dispute about tradition and they try to solve it but they could not. The other oba told the British that it is only OONIRISA present that can solve the dispute. The British then has little knowledge of power of OONIRISA. They beg OONIRISA to help solve the issue, if I could recollect, OONIRISA told them if he is to come out of ife, every river he will cross, the British have to kill cow, the colonial buy 1000 cows and provide transportation to convey OONIRISA.

Moreso, when OONIRISA left Palace, all the Kings in South Western left their Palace including Oba of Benin. Because it has never happened before for OONIRISA to leave ife.

Go and ask or check Nigeria history and gazette.

Anybody from the ruling families can be Alafin, but only the Edaiken can succeed the Oba. Edaiken is the first son of the oba who must have been initiated into the Edo mystical system from birth as the head. Again, Edaiken can only succeed his dad on his passage. Oba of Benin is still more difficult to dethrone than Alafin

But in history Benin Monarch was once dethrone by British colonialism and the same British colonial pay a lot of money by killing cows when inviting OONIRISA OF IFE to come out of his domain to settle a dispute in Lagos. According to history, he kill cows in every river that Ooni cross and also provide aircraft to passage Oonirisa through the journey. Read your history very well.

Speaking in an Instagram post, Ednut shared a photo of Governor Godwin Obaseki kneeling before Oba of Benin...
