Osun Election: INEC confirms arrest, release of its officials over suspicious movement of electoral materials The Independent National Electoral Commission [INEC] on Friday confirmed that two of its officials in Osun State were arrested over suspicion that they were trying to divert electoral materials. The commission, however, said the officials, one of which is the Electoral Officer for Obokun Local Government Area, were released by security agencies after INEC explained the reason for their actions. Some vigilante youth in Osun State had reportedly intercepted and arrested a truck full of ballot papers meant for Saturday’s governorship election in the state. The truck was allegedly intercepted in Obokun Town, Obokun Local Government Area, in the wee hours of Friday along with the driver and three men who claimed to be INEC officials. In a statement by Kayode Idowu, the media aide to the INEC Chairman, the Commission said its investigation into the matter showed that although two officials were arrested, both men did not deliberately act the way they did. “The bid to retrieve the non-sensitive materials triggered suspicion of something untoward among the communities, some of which resisted the retrieval,” Mr. Idowu said. “A number of them alerted security agents, who promptly arrested the EO and the officer who had distributed the non-sensitive materials. “The EO and his officer have since been released and they have gone on with their duties, following the Commission’s investigation and satisfactory explanation to the security agencies about the true nature of the incident.” The INEC chairman’s spokesperson said, “This statement is to clear the air over the widely circulating report, especially on online sites, which suggested that the integrity of the process leading up to the Osun State Governorship Election on August 9, 2014, has been compromised,” it said. “Investigation shows that no sensitive materials were diverted, neither was any official of INEC caught in cohort with political partisans.” The Commission explained that the EO of Obokun Local Government had, at some point on Wednesday, discussed and agreed with all stakeholders, including political parties in his LGA, that sensitive and non-sensitive materials would be distributed together once the sensitive materials were received at the INEC LGA office. It further said early on Thursday morning, all EOs in Osun State were asked to report to Osogbo to collect sensitive materials for their respective LGAs, hence why the Obokun EO and one of his officers left for the state capital to collect the materials. It stated that while they were in Osogbo, the EO realised that mattresses needed for operating the Registration Area Centres, RACs, which ought to have been delivered at the RACs, had not been distributed. Consequently, it explained further, he (EO) sent back his officer to go distribute the mattresses to all the RACs. The Commission said the officer assigned the task misinterpreted the instruction and, rather than distribute only the mattresses, began to distribute non-sensitive materials as well – contrary to the earlier agreement between the EO and political parties. “The EO returned to the LGA office around 7pm on Thursday with sensitive materials for his jurisdiction and, on learning that the officer had overreached his instruction, became concerned about the breach of the agreement he had with the political parties and other stakeholders. He immediately ordered the retrieval of the non- sensitive materials from all RACs. “The bid to retrieve the non-sensitive materials triggered suspicion of something untoward among the communities, some of which resisted the retrieval. A number of them alerted security agents, who promptly arrested the EO and the officer who had distributed the non-sensitive materials. “The EO and his officer have since been released and they have gone on with their duties, following the Commission’s investigation and satisfactory explanation to the security agencies about the true nature of the incident.” INEC said, for the avoidance of doubt, sensitive materials were not involved in the incident and that sensitive materials from the State INEC Headquarters arrived at the LGA long after the non-sensitive materials had been distributed. The Commission also said there was absolutely no truth to the claim that the EO or any other staff of INEC was found in a vehicle other than the Commission’s vehicle distributing materials. “That may explain why the only vehicle shown in the various social media reports on the incident was the Commission’s vehicle with registration No.: FG 816 VO1.” INEC reassured the public that it remained committed to ensuring high integrity of the electoral process and delivery of free, fair and credible governorship election in Osun State. |
Well all these derailing are expected, and the politicking are also expected from some party loyalists. I still plead with those who are here to cause trouble to please steer away from this thread. At least you can create another thread to abuse one another or indulge in what you are used to there. This thread is meant to educate Nigerians on happenings here in osun as they unfold. Thanks all. |
@ dagr8, I think you can see the matured way people have commented so far on this thread. It's in your best interest that you don't derail it. We all here are working for the best interest of our state. If there are claims from the other party, don't rush to defend the party you are affiliated to without any concrete proof. |
Well the news are a bit scary even from reports here. Though I think some people should stop Making comparisons between osun and ekiti. That's really UN called for, Each state Is peculiar and its people differ. |
maasoap: So true, very real. It was tagged "egbe omo ilu" in the state capital. Gullible and ignorant voters were asked to bring the photocopies of their voters cards. Only God knows what they are going to do with it. We discouraged many people but you know the level of poverty in the country. That's the reality, and the fact is what you have stated above, many will be deceived by this, and the wishes of the people might be subdued at the end. |
Kaleni: Report getting to me now that they have arrested a Toyota hilux bus with 500,000 ballot papers in Ilesha town. The plate number of the motor conveying the ballot papers is : FG816Y01Hmm na Wa, let's wait for confirmations sha |
As I said earlier, the election here will really be induced. Everybody is trying to out do one another. And surely in politics, some last minute acts matter a lot as taking chances will really have an adverse effect. But the saddest thing is that some people will fall prey to this, and won't vote their conscience. |
anonimi: and can we add also Adedibu in IbadanOga from your post. You've shown that you are not from Ede. But for the avoidance of doubt, what I want you to understand from my post is that, Adeleke is a very influential politician in Ede. |
Some one asked yesterday when there will be a restriction of movement? The information I got today from the media is that: Restriction of movement starts from 6pm today till 6pm tomorrow. |
Well everywhere is calm here in Ede as people are going about their normal business awaiting the evening when there will be a restriction of inter state movements by 6pm. There are rumors everywhere as usual, and many osun indigenes who are abroad are also coming home in multitudes. But I fear tomorrow's election will be highly induced with cash and other things. in fact some people have started distributing money since yesterday. And are planning to do more tomorrow. |
The Intriguing Politics of Ede: On Saturday, Ede is going to be one of the towns which we are to expect a very tricky and intriguing results. This is largely due to the fact that the PDP candidate's deputy is from this town and also very influential. more so, Senator Isiaka Adeleke who's an APC stalwart and really has massive supporters is also from here. Actually, Ede used to be a pre dominant PDP town largely due to the influence of the Asiwaju Adeleke who's respected in the town and held in high esteem due to his political prowess and influence he has. He was the first executive governor of osun state and he really did much for the people, such that he has endeared the people to him. The love for Adeleke can be likened to that of saraki in Ilorin politics. His departure to APC after a painful exit from the PDP will really enable many people from the town vote for his party. Adejare Bello on the other hand who incidentally is the Oluomo of Ede and PDP's deputy guber candidate can also not be under estimated. Though a political son of Adeleke and also a beneficiary of his philanthropy. He's coming at the heels of some Ede indigenes who will vote out of sympathy for the fact that one of their sons will soon emerge as the deputy Governor of the state. From a personal perspective, APC will conveniently win in Ede no matter how small it is. In percentage I give APC 70, to PDP's 30 percent. |
Just now: The PDP CAMPAIGN TRAIN has just been finalized here in Ede as the PDP DEPUTY GOVERNOR CANDIDATE ADEJARE BELLO just campaigned with his supporters. |
AdeniyiA: will interstates buses be allowed to ply the major roads tomorrow, Friday? For tomorrow I think there will be free movement. Restrictions will usually start on Saturday 12:00am. But despite that, expect heavy security presence/ check up on the roads tomorrow. |
MORNDEW YOU ARE WELCOMED HERE TOO TO MAKE YOUR CONTRIBUTIONS. |
https://m.premiumtimesng.com/news/166197-osun-election-inec-is-fully-prepared-jega.html In every polling unit, there will be a cubicle where voters can vote secretly. The constitution says the secrecy of the ballot paper must be protected,” he said. The National Chairman, Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, on Wednesday said all was set for the Osun gubernatorial election slated for Saturday. Mr. Jega announced this at a stakeholders’ forum organised by the commission in Osogbo. “We have prepared adequately and meticulously to ensure that the election is free, fair and credible. “We have paid a lot of attention to the training of our staff and ad hoc staff to use and we will protect members of the National Youth Service Corps we normally use. “We have put measures in place to protect lives and property and to ensure that voters exercise their franchise in a peaceful environment,’’ he said. The INEC chairman said the commission would ensure that ballot papers for the election had been serially printed to ensure they were not in another state. According to him, INEC has also customised result sheets at every polling unit so that no politician can use them to produce unauthorised results. Other initiatives of the commission included the colour coding of ballot papers from one council to another so that it would not be transferable in the council areas. He noted that sensitive materials, including ballot papers were ready for distribution to local governments’ councils with colour coding. “In every polling unit, there will be a cubicle where voters can vote secretly. The constitution says the secrecy of the ballot paper must be protected,” he said. Jega re-assured stakeholders of the commission’s commitment to free, fair and credible election not only in Osun but in the 2015 general elections. He said people, including traditional rulers, should promote peaceful conduct and refrain from violence as security agents were fully prepared to deal with miscreants. According to him, accreditation will begin from 8 a.m. to noon, while voting will commence at 12:30 a.m. “Accredited voters are to join the queue and the voting exercise will not end until the last voter on queue is attended to, voting will then take place simultaneously to prevent multiple voting.’’ Mr. Jega, who advised the electorate not to do anything that would make them fall victim of electoral offences, vowed that the commission would be just, neutral, not partisan, and impartial. “Our hope is to make sure that Osun election is the best poll so far conducted and everyone should come out to perform their civic duty peacefully,’’ he added. Suleiman Abba, the Acting Inspector-General of Police, said that security agencies were concerned with the security of voters, INEC staff and election materials. Abba said the police would protect the integrity of the election and ensure that the election met the requirement of democratic principles and international best practices. He, however, warned sponsors of thugs to beware because law enforcement officers were not only on land but in the air that day. Mr. Abba, however, assured law abiding citizens of police protection, saying every voter should feel free and secured to cast their votes on Saturday. (NAN) |
Neyoor come and rep your location. Other Omoluabis are welcomed on this thread. Let's join hands to decide who leads us for the next four years. |
There have been accusations and counter accusations among the two leading political parties as they are putting finishing touches to their campaigns today. The campaign has been massive all the way, With the major candidates I.e The incumbent governor Rauf Aregbesola of the APC, Dr Iyiola Omisore of the PDP, and Fatai Akinbade of the labor party telling the citizens why he should be voted for and not the other way round. |
Women voters are to determine the outcome of the Osun State governorship election slated for August 9. This is because the number of registered female voters in the state is higher than that of the male, according to a document obtained by our correspondent from the Independent National Electoral Commission in Abuja on Monday. The document shows that there are 1,407,222 valid registered voters in the state out of which female constitute 53 per cent. This indicates that there are 754,828 female voters in the state while the number of male registered voters is 661,394, which represents 47 per cent of the total number of voters. While the commission put the number of wards in the state at 332, it also states that there are 3,010 polling units, adding that there are 3,379 voting points for the election. It was also stated in the document that Osogbo Local Government Area had the highest number of voters out of the 30 local government areas in the state. While Osogbo Local Government Area leads with 110,000 voters, Ife East is second with 81,430 and follow by Olorunda with 71,580 voters. Iwo Local Government Area is fourth with 66,657 voters while Ifelodun Local Government Area, comes fifth with 57,591 voters. The three local government areas with the least number of voters are Ifedayo, which has 13,066 voters; Boluwaduro, 16,844 voters; and Orolu with 24,914 voters. Twenty political parties are fielding candidates for the election. Some of the parties are Accord Party, Alliance for Democracy, All Progressive Grand Alliance, All Progressives Congress, Peoples Democratic Party, Labour Party, Unity Party of Nigeria and Social Democratic Party. Out of these 20 political parties, it is generally believed that the fight would be between the candidates of the APC, who is also the incumbent governor of the state, Mr. Raul Aregbesola, and the candidate of the PDP, Senator Iyiola Omisore. In order to have a hitch-free election, the document indicated that the electoral body had positioned eight management members of staff for the election. Also on ground for the election are 30 electoral officers, 30 assistant electoral officers (administrative), 30 assistant electoral officers (operations) and another 30 assistant electoral officers (RAC). There are 19 local and 10 foreign observers accredited to monitor the election. Among the local observing groups are Nigeria Civil Society Situation Room, led by Clement Nwakwo; Women Arise for Change Initiate which has Dr. Joe Okei- Odumakin as leader; and Justice Development Peace Commission led by Rev. Fr. Everest Bassey. Also listed as monitors are Rights Monitoring Group (Olufemi Aduwo); Reclaim Naija(Ngozi Iwere); and Election Monitor(Abiodun Ajijola). Some of the foreign monitors are European Union Delegation, High Commission of Canada, British High Commission, Embassy of France, Embassy of Federal Republic of Germany, and the United States Mission to Nigeria. “INEC has dedicated hotlines at its Situation Room in Abuja through which complaints can be lodged or incidents reported from any Polling Unit throughout Osun State for swift intervention as may be appropriate,” the document added. The telephone lines are 07098115257, 08101774434, 07098117563, 07032492303, 07098110916, 0709811638. The commission, however, added that complaints to these lines should be through SMS Source: THEPUNCH |
Do you know that female voters will most likely decide the outcome of the elections on Saturday? If you doubt it, just check this report out. |
N.B: IF YOU ARE IN OSUN. KINDLY SIGNIFY, AND LET I'D KNOW WHERE YOU WILL BE REPORTING FROM, AND POSSIBLY DROP SOME HINTS AS REGARDS WHAT'S HAPPENING AND WHAT WE SHOULD LIKELY EXPECT FROM WHERE YOU ARE. I AM CURRENTLY IN EDE, EDE NORTH L.G.A PRECISELY AND I WILL BE REPORTING FROM THERE. |
This election will surely be intriguing. As it's known there are always two sides to a coin, and a well known Igbo musician sang: Oso ndi, Owe ndi. I.e It pleases some, and displeases others. So, many people are just waiting for Saturday to cast their votes and determine who will rule them for the next 4 years, The people are really enthusiastic and just can't wait to troop out en masse and vote for their candidate. |
Meanwhile INEC has stated that there are 30 local government areas in osun and 332 registration areas. The state also has 3,010 polling units and 3379 voting points. Barely 48 hours to the much anticipated, much expected, and much talked about Osun 2014 gubernatorial elections. This thread is created to inform Nigerians of the build up to the elections. What happens on the election day, before, during, and after the elections. This is due to the fact that the world is a global village now, and we want the whole world know how events are unfolding in the state of osun. Come on guys |
The Dagunro of Naija. Ride on jare. As usual some peeps will come here to defend what's not. even to the extent of saying the same thing played out in Ekiti. Well to those people their opinion, But going generally by the wide acceptance of this man, victory is sure for him, if truly democracy is a game of numbers. Omisore boys will deceive themselves and say all these defections will amount to nothing, but truth be told that's not the reality on ground here. It really matters a lot and will go a long way to determine the outcome on Friday. |
This is a very good and welcome development from the better by far university. Another first from UNILORIN as far as I know. |
If GEJ likes, let him come or not it's none of my business as it won't change the price of Garri in the market. But let GEJ and the PDP be reminded that his visit to OSUN in 2011 didn't help him to lose woefully in OSUN. This time around that feat will be repeated. |
This is really getting out of hand. And it seems as though bombing is now a norm in the society. The fact is that our government has failed woefully because we keep hearing the same consolation messages everyday. And after that another bomb detonates. It's high time the govt wake up to it's responsibly and do what's right. |
This is really saddening. When will all these bombings stop? I pray there is a final solution to this soonest. But some news sites like premium times and Sahara reporters reported that the bomb blast is at kano state polytechnic. I pray and Hope it's an error from them and not that there is another attack there. So help us God |
The PDP's campaign have not only been poor but appalling. His campaign team have really not done enough as they don't even campaign as the under dogs. You even wonder some times what they even depend on. Thinking that they can win without campaigning vigorously. No much radio jingles, house to house campaign, campaigns to different constituencies as is been done by the APC. |
The points raised in this article are true. Am currently in Osun state and I can connect with what has been raised so far. The woes of PDP started with the selection of omisore who's not loved by most people here because of his tainted image. To the fact that the PDP is a house divided against itself. The party big wigs were allowed to leave easily. Adeleke, Akinbade, Teslim Igbaleye et all who can pull the crowd for them are now with the APC |
