Business / Maritime Unions Kick Against Repeal Of NPA Establishing Act by shehuolayinka(m): 7:46pm On Jul 12, 2017
Workers at the Nigeria Port Authority under the auspice of two unions, Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) and Maritime Branch of the Senior Staff Association of Communication, Transportation and Corporation, (SSACTAC) Tuesday, staged a nationwide peaceful protest against a repeal the Nigerian Ports Authority Act by the National Assembly.

The bill allegedly sponsored by Honourable Ossai Nicholas Ossai at the House of Representative, seek to repeal the Nigerian Ports Authority Act, CAP126 LFN 2004 and to establish The Nigerian Ports and Harbours Authority to Provide for the ownership, management, development of the Ports and Harbours and for related matters.

The protest which started at 5:3am and ended 12:00pm was held simultaneously in all the country seven ports in Lagos Port Complex and Tin Can Island Port in Lagos; Calabar Port, Delta Port, Rivers Port at Port Harcourt, and Onne Port.

The Union threatened to shut down the sector indefinitely if the national assembly still insist in pursuing the passage of the bill.

The Union also wondered why governments demanded they work 24hrs when the road leading to Apapa is not motorable and the no-electricity situation.

The union in a statement signed by comrade Adewale Adeyanju made available to the Nigerian Tribune said if passed the bill will the country to vary security challenges.

“we are here protesting the survival of our nation’s ports and job security of our members and others by the detestable “bill pending at the national assembly for the repeal of the Nigerian Ports Authority Act, Cap 126 LFN 2004 and to establish the Nigerian Ports and harbours authority to provide ownership, management and development of ports and harbour land for related matters which, has been clandestinely been passed by the Senate and gone through the second reading in House of Representative without the knowledge of most stakeholders in the Maritime sector especially organised Labour” he said.

“the sponsor of the Bill, which has been made known to us to be House Ossai Nicholas Ossai at House of Representatives, seem not to understand the consequence of this bill to the security of the nation as it cedes harbour, jetty and terminal operations into private hands. This is especially seriously in the view of dangerous influx of illegal arms and ammunition into the country, which we are all seeing the consequences as evidenced in the insurgency, kidnapping, militancy and other violent crimes across the country”.

“You will recall in 1990 when a private jetty and warehouse were used to import and stockpiled weapons which were deployed in attempt to unseat the then federal government and most recently, the discovery of over 440 carton of danger weapons in containers in two operations in our ports”.

“The bill also, will throw more than half of our members and other workers into the already saturated labour market, which is contrary to the promise of the current give to protect and create jobs. Having examined the act setting up NPA and our experiences since then, we have not been able to understand the reason or reasons for this bill except to through the back door, appropriate national assets to few unpatriotic individuals for their personal aggrandizement thereby denying government of the huge revenue in foreign exchange accruable to it through the Maritime sector”.

“the section 3 of the bill establishing Nigerian Ports and Harbours Authority already vest on the Authority sole ownership of all ports and harbours in Nigeria on behalf of the Federal government. The provision of section 10 of the bill which seem to grant general power to the new authority to develop own and control ports in partnership with others is in total conflict with the establishing section of the bill.

“there is no deficiency in existing system and the existing authority and we were not even called or informed about it, but are surprised that the bill has gone through the public hearing without one of the majors stakeholders; members of the two house unions being given opportunity to air our views”

The union further said the bill seek to to legitimise sacking of the existing staffs.

“A cursory examination of item 6 in the second schedule of the said bill seeks to wickedly legitimise sacking of workers as it unambiguously state that not every staff of NPA will be absolved by the new Nigerian Ports and Harbours Authority. No proviso is also made concerning the fate of the employees whose services will not be transferred, including how and who pays their terminal benefit. More worrisome is the fact that the bill in section 15 (4) will give the new authority power to employ on non-pensionable terms and conditions. This effectively institutionalize the evil of casualization of the workers and negates the provision of the Federation government pension Reform Act, 2004 as amended”.

“we unequivocally reject this bill. We are determined to ensure that Nigeria and Nigerians are not short changed by this obnoxious bill. We appeal to members of the national assembly to listen to the voice of reason and obey the wish of the people. If we discover that plans to make this bill a law continues in the National Assembly, we will not hesitate to shut down the sector indefinitely, until the voice of the people prevails”.

Travel / Video: NURTW Back To Oshodi, Members Now Operate Without Uniforms by shehuolayinka(m): 12:30pm On Jul 07, 2017
The ban placed on the National Union of Road Transport Workers, by the Lagos State Government, may have been lifted as it members are back operating in Oshodi.

A visit by Bell Times to Oshodi on Tuesday, 4 July 2017 observed that NURTW members have gone back to the streets and roads of Oshodi.

It was observed that union members now operate on mufti unlike before the crisis when members operate with the white and green uniforms worn by NURTW members.

The Cele-Ilasa motor park was observed to have NURTW members operating under the full glares of security operatives drafted to oshodi to keep law and order.

The interstate park was also observed to have NURTW activities going on.

A motorist who crave anonymity, spoken to by Bell Times said NURTW operation began immediately after the said reported reconciliatory meeting.

“they are back on the street, major roads and collecting money. We don’t even know if government have lifted the ban or not, but NURTW are operating in Oshodi without anybody disturbing them” he said.

The Lagos State placed a ban on the activities of NURTW in Oshodi after Rasaq Bello, popularly known as Hamburger, a prominent member of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW ) was shot dead in Shogunle Lagos during the local council primaries of the All Progressives Congress ( APC).

Hamburger was the Lagos State Treasurer of Tricycle Operators, a branch of NURTW.

Bello was allegedly shot on Monday by members of a rival gang allegedly led by one Samson Agbetoye, popularly known as Golden.

Effort to get the Lagos State Government reaction proved abortive, as message sent to the state government email address, (Info@lagosstate.gov.ng) on Tuesday, was not replied to.

Crime / Avoid Falling Victim To Jungle Justice - Some Useful Tips For Ikorodu Residents by shehuolayinka(m): 10:55am On Jul 05, 2017
Copied

In light of the declaration of war against badoo cult group, with the innocent falling victim of jungle justice, extreme caution is necessary in order to prevent yourself or you're loved ones from innocently falling victim of jungle justice.

1. Schedule your movement to/from Ikorodu to as close to daylight as possible. Don't leave home too early in the morning and don't arrive too late at night.

2. Always carry your identity card with you.

3. Always dress properly like a responsible person, not like a ruffian or a criminal. Have a proper gentleman haircut; avoid keeping dreadlocks.

4. Have definite and definable direction to your destination. Always inform your loved ones about your whereabouts.

5. When visiting someone, call the person beforehand. Get the proper direction to his address. If his address is not clear, have him wait for you at a definable bus stop our public landmark to take you home.

6. Do not pay someone a surprise, unannounced visit, especially at night. It could spell trouble if the person is not at home!

7. If accosted by security or vigilante group, stay calm. Identify yourself properly. State where you are going to chastely. Submit your self calmly and carefully to security search. Let them know that you don't mind them following you to your destination of they doubt you. Don't act arrogantly or rudely.

8. If driving, avoid offering strangers a lift. You can vouch for yourself, but can you vouch for the stranger that you carry?

9. Always avoid carrying incriminating objects unnecessarily, eg knife, oil, grinding stone, hammer, crowbar, cutlass, etc. These apparently ordinary objects in certain freak combinations could connote sinister meanings.

10. Warn your loved ones NEVER to visit you without prior notice. They must come during the day and never at night. If they will stay late during the visit, they must sleep over and leave in the morning.

Send this post to them before they visit, as all the point above also apply to them.

Politics / We Risk Becoming Refugees If We Don’t Talk - Christopher Kolade by shehuolayinka(m): 8:32am On Jun 25, 2017
Nigeria former Ambassador to the UK, Dr. Christopher Kolade says the country risk being in a great and people refugees if peaceful conversation ain’t giving a chance.

Dr. Kolade spoke at the fifth year commemoration of late Chief Segun Olusola, the founder of African Refugees Foundation, AREF, and the celebration of World Refugee Day, celebrated Wednesday, Lagos.

According to him, “if we look at what is happening, anybody who is a refugee will know he is not enjoying life. If we continue to talk to ourselves violently, creating tension, we may all become refugee and life will be very unstable for us. Yet anybody who fights a war, when you have killed many people, suffer hardship, you will still come back to talk. So let talk and find out our differences, so as to avoid bloodshed and unpleasant crisis”he said.

“Anything you want, let’s talk about it peacefully. Maybe restructuring or anything, we need to do it peacefully. If we fight about it, we will just kill ourselves, destroy our property and will not get us anywhere”.

Commending AREF, he said it has done a good job and it should be commended and encouraged to do more. He also praise the effort of Late, Chief Olusola in starting AREF.

The President of AREF, Chief (Mrs) Opral Benson during her opening remarks on the celebrations of refugees said government need to find a way in reducing all form of displacement, production of IDPs and refugees.

According to her, “we are in a challenging times. We must continue to chart ways to reduce all forms of displacements and production of internally displaced persons and refugees. The desperation of militants, cultists, kidnappers and economic saboteurs know no boundary. Their activities have adversary affected our peaceful co-existence with dire consequences on the citizenry” she said.

“As pathetic as the situation is, we are yet to grasp the right solutions to the root causes of these conflicts. The destardly activities if roving herdsmen is now gaining momentum, igniting tensions and tempting peace and is a far flung contemplation, which requires serious attention from our political leaders”.

Mrs Benson also praised the efforts of Founder of AREF, Segun Olusola.

“Chief Segun Olusola was a consummate art connoisseur and peace ambassador. Today, it is exactly five years when he passed on to great beyond. He left the stage when the ovation was loudest. AREF is one of his legacies. We are making concerted effort to ensure that there is continue in what he left behind”.

“We give kudos to our his resourceful thinking and his ever willing ability to generate ideas, making friends with the lonely and charting ways forward for refugees, internally displaced persons and the promotion of our culture. He used his cherished professing broadcasting to articulate his thoughts, for peaceful co-existence and development” she added.

The National Commission for Refugees, in her remarks Hajiya Sadiya Farouk, said displaced person need to be empowered and not let to depend on handouts of foods.

“The commission is not a proponent of IDP camps where the displaced persons are constantly being given handouts of food and daily upkeep for an indefinite amount of time, we believe that camps are a necessity at the point of emergency as a temporary solution to the problem of shelter, however in the long run; the goal should be to ensure that the displaced persons are reintegrated back into the society. They should be empowered to go back to their homes and re-build their towns and their cities and reignite the social and economic activities of the affected areas” she said.

She also said late chief Segun Olusola, work towards the enhancement of the lives of refugees and other persons of concern cannot be overemphasised and indeed the impact of his departure has been felt.

Politics / One Nigeria Is Achievable by shehuolayinka(m): 11:37am On Jun 20, 2017
No country in the world came to be through peaceful or democratic understanding/consensus.

Nigeria case ain’t different nor will any be in near future. I see no sense in those championing the division of Nigeria by pointing to it diversity and the way it came to be.

As the country revs and move into what could be described as it most trying time, (since civil war) collective effort is needed in getting the country out of the despicable and unthinkable situations it find itself in.

We have failed to discuss, failed to sit down and have a thorough and open minded discussion on how we can reach an agreement that would quench the yearnings of all.

Nigeria problem didn't start today or did it start at the beginning of the 21st century. Not also did it start during the regime of the military dictator that institutionalised and legalise corruption couple with fraudulent activities.

The problem also didn’t and wasn’t birthed during the pre and pro independence era, but the unplanned and unthought amalgamation of people with diverse identity that was carried out by the British.

The forceful and brutal balkanization of different regions into one country, sowed the seed of disunity and thus gave birth to what is being witnessed in today British contraption.

The country itself is an aberration. It was created for the purpose of serving the interests of the Crown and its people.

It wasn’t created for the purpose of uplifting and helping the black race, but for hypocritical and selfish interests of the Europeans.

It also erred when it policies was directly undermining other regions over one.

We can still and ensure that the stupidity and crass ignorance exhibited by the British doesn't define nor shape what we intend to be or where we are going.

We must not consider the country unworkable because of the born to rule mentality of few and idiosyncratic tendency that has festered and risen beyond imagination in the hands of selected few to the detriment of millions of those inhabiting Nigeria.

I tend to like what happening because it gives us the opportunity to talk, same as providing a platform for every Nigerian; illiterate or not in contributing his own piece to how the country should be.

A lot needs to be done. More is needed. Breaking up or the balkanization of the space won't serve but definitely will work against those championing secession.

If we are to survive this, a Nigeria for all should be at the pinnacle of ushering in a new Nigeria. (abeg the name should be changed).

The country is ripe for restructuring. Restructuring in the sense that we start by flushing out Kakistocracy and kleptocracy. We need to decentralise; allow State to function more and also give them the power to tap into and also control their resources.

Do away with the State of Origin, and change it to State of Residence. Allow State to generate their electricity. Security should be at the control of the State Government and not the Federal Government, apart the military.

A special anti-corruption court should be set up as corruption is almost becoming a recognise and acceptable culture.

Also by doing away with and ensuring we don't have low level thinking lawmakers and clowns at the National Assembly. Doing away with nonentities and corrupt personified individuals that are supervising our commonwealth.

The legislative and the Judiciary arm of government are suppose to be for the common man. They are meant to fight it battle, it lifeline and where should also be a place where it voice can be heard.
The legislature and the Judiciary in Nigeria, are basically anti-people and the country having a better future.

We need to stop listening to people like Femi Fani-Kayode, Ayodele Fayose, Nnamdi Kanu, Dino Melaye, and old-northern rogues claiming to be youths.

Any politician that doesn’t serve your interest, should be discarded and shunned.

The question we should always ask ourselves, is what has Fani-Kayode and his likes contributed to the development of Nigeria? He was once an aviation minister, what was his achievement? Same should be asked of other politicians who tend to think we are fools. What have they contributed apart from creating disunity for their selfish purposes.

Just to know, the Nigerian elites (political) are not your friend. They won’t work or are going to work for your interest, but only theirs.

Apart from Lagos, (South West) no state can stand on it own if the country would be heading to becoming different independent state. It would years for any new country to get it feet. Not even the South South.

The country is need of sound minds, technocrats and those with pure and intelligent mindset that can maneuver and take the country to where it suppose to be.

Enough with the coulrophobia.
Building a Nigeria of our dream is achievable, albeit if we can do away with the myopic and ethnic jingoistic mindsets that seems to have clouded our thinking faculty.

Nothing good should be expected in near future but comeuppance if we continue to act in the ways that will bring more problems than success.

Religion / Abu Dhabi Mosque Renamed ‘mary, Mother Of Jesus’ by shehuolayinka(m): 2:19pm On Jun 18, 2017
A mosque in the UAE’s capital Abu Dhabi has been renamed the “Mary, mother of Jesus” Mosque in a bid to “consolidate bonds of humanity between followers of different religions.”

The mosque — “Mariam, Umm Eisa” in Arabic — was renamed following orders of Sheikh Mohammad bin Zayed Al-Nahyan, Abu Dhabi crown prince and deputy supreme commander of the UAE Armed Forces, who called for consolidating bonds between followers of different faiths.

Minister of State for Tolerance Sheikha Lubna Al-Qasimi thanked the crown prince for his “wise directives in carrying out this initiative that set a shining example, and a beautiful image of the tolerance and coexistence enjoyed by the UAE,” according to a statement carried by WAM.

Rev. Canon Andrew Thompson of the nearby St. Andrew’s Church told Gulf News that he was “delighted” to hear the news.

“We are delighted that we are celebrating something that we have in common between both our faiths,” he said.

Education / Re: Some Common English Mistakes And Their Corrections by shehuolayinka(m): 8:53pm On Jun 17, 2017
All those you pointed out as mistakes are Nigeria coined English. I see nothing wrong in us using it. We can also have our English, no wrong in that.

Politics / My Millennia Are Becoming A Disgrace by shehuolayinka(m): 7:41am On Jun 15, 2017
The more I surf the Internet, the more I feel disgusted and ashamed to be in the same age category with those who actually should know better than promoting the discourse of hate and disunity in Nigeria.

We are almost getting to a state of no return with the myopic and pedestal thinking of some of my millennia, which has become a cause for concern and worry.

I was in a gathering on Monday, where former Governor of Abia State, Orji Uzor Kalu speech served as a wake up call to me instead of frowning at his speech, as you certainly can't dissociate Kalu from the so called one percent elites that has held the county at the jugular.

Kalu was of the opinion that the masses, hold the key to Nigeria greatness and not the so called power blocs.

Having had to grow up in a self-styled mini barrack in the Ketu area of Lagos State, sharing the same bed, plate, spoon with almost all the major tribe in Nigeria, I have refuse to join and share the same mentality with online riff-raff and clowns that precious time spent on conjuring hate writings, could be used in thinking about bettering the country, it populace and image.

On Monday, I reprimanded and made sure a Yoruba okada rider promised never to label other tribes as not worth associating with.

Those paying homage and following Nnamdi Kanu, have forgotten that the self-styled Igbo Supreme Leader, would bolt whenever the going get tough. The guy has nothing to lose, nor does he have anything worth dying for in Nigeria.

Those also at the north demanding that Igbos should vacate from their land, need know that the survival and continue flourishing of Northern Nigeria, largely depend on the continuous existence and economical viability of Southern Nigeria.

The amalgamation of North and South Nigeria, by Lord Lugard and his girlfriend, outrightly should be rejected by any thinking human beings, due to the difference of every region, but we need to know that Lugard action may be detestable and condemnable, his amalgamating the north and southern protectorate has done more good than bad to the regions and Africa as a whole.

What makes us tick, is what binds us together.

Nigeria is due for restructuring and not breakup. Nigeria is due for love, affection and not hate.

The jibiti that has continued to be played on us by the elites, affects not The Igbos or youths alone, but the whole masses as a whole.

The hate speech need to stop. even if a lasting solution would be found to the quagmire, we certainly have set in a motion of hate and disunity in the society, which certainly has been picked up by the upcoming generation.

My generation already is becoming a waste. It almost moving into the abyss and not to be seem anymore.

Nnamdi Kanu children are not in Nigeria. Even if they are; his child would not share the same space with Ebuka, the gardener's son or Alice, the cleaner's daughter.

Yes, I am tired and disappointed with the way Nigeria is. I am frustrated and regretting why I never left thought about the country. but we can make things better, make it work, if we come together.

Change can manifest only if the masses, not the elites work towards it.

I want a country, where I wouldn't be afraid to go out. I want a country where I can visit Kano or Imo State and not be afraid of being attacked by deluded fellows. I want a country where my neighbours would be an Hausa, Ebira or Igbos and we share so many things together. Want a country where my future offerings would have the sweet and eventful childhood experiences made possible by Pius Peter, Babangida, Dayo, Emeka, Wale, Nndubusi, Alex etc.

In as much I hate the name Nigeria, (Land of the Blacks) i believe my millennia still hold the key to making Nigeria great and surely can make it happen if we are together.

We are the youths of Nigeria; the greatest and best country in the world.

We are the youths of Nigeria; the most endowed and educated country in the world.

We have bright and intelligent dudes, who can take us to greater height.

Let forget and do away with old-cargo writers who think they own us. Let frown and bark at those whose intention is to divide us. Lets also hold hands and make Nigeria great.

Let come together and act like the champion we were born to be.

Politics / The Unity Of Nigeria Should Not Be Question – Kalu by shehuolayinka(m): 7:34am On Jun 15, 2017
By: Shehu Bello-Olayinka

The former governor of Abia State, Orji Uzor Kalu, said the unity of Nigeria should not be question but that everyone has a right to demand for the division of the country.

The former government said this at the commemoration of the June 12 Presidential Election, widely acclaimed to be free and fair, and believed to have been won by Moshood Abiola but annulled by former Military Head of State, Ibrahim Babangida, held, Monday, Excellence Hotel, Ogba Lagos State.

According to him, “The unity of Nigeria should not be question. Though people have a right to say they want to divide the country, they have a right to say anything they want, but have no right to carry arms, if they are to carry arms, then that is criminal”.

“People have a right to ask for what they want to do, but are those thing they are saying possible, the answer is no. then we need to play back to what will unite the country and what will unite the country so that we can move forward”.

He also called on the Federal Government to respect the judiciary irrespective of the judgment.

“June 12 should be the symbol of fairness, equity and obedient to the rule of law. Today, most of our security agencies are still misbehaving, taking the law into their hands. Taking the law reserved for the judiciary in to their hands. No matter how worst, no matter how we all think about the Nigeria judiciary, it remains the best in Africa. I have gone to very country in Africa, we send our judges to Uganda, Namibia, The Gambia, Liberia, Sierra Leone, which our judges work in those places and they have giving good account of themselves.

The Student Union Government of Lagos State Polytechnic, have condemned the inhuman treatment meted against students by men of Nigerian Army.

The Union was reported to have embarked on another strike last week, after it demands were not met by the management of the institution, which infuriated the students who mobilized themselves to demand for immediate continuation of lectures.
