Update on Fall 2021 Application:

I have been an avid follower of this thread for over 2 years, before I began my Master's degree in the US (it's been a roller coaster, but profitable ).
I applied to three schools for a Ph.D. in Earth and Energy Sciences/Geophysics/Geology degree (University of Louisiana at Lafayette, Texas A & M, College Station and Oklahoma State University, Stillwater)

* B.Sc. GPA: 4.59/5.0
* Master's GPA: 4/4
* GRE:311- V 154, Q 157 AWA 4. (written in 2018). Schools waived this due to COVID-19 restrictions and lack of confidence in this metric (depends on the program).
* TOEFL: 105 (taken in 2018 and expired), but I have over a year of graduate school experience in the US.
*1 publication- unrelated research, but a few more publications and abstracts on the way on related research topics.
* 4 grants/scholarships from undergrad and grad schools.
* Over 2 years experience as a GTA and GA (Nigeria and US).
* 4 academic and international competition awards.
* Good volunteering experiences.
* Skilled in relevant software
* Course-related virtual internship
* Over 4 Massive Open Oline Course certifications from reputable schools (Not sure if this was helpful).

ULL- applied in Nov, safe school, admitted in Dec, funding later in Spring. Had a professor interested in working with me.
TAMU - applied in September/October, had an informal Zoom interview with 2 professors in October, got a follow up from the Director of one of their research centers about my research interests. I would most likely be admitted and funded.
OSU - admitted, full and generous GRA/GTA offer (I believe this is an early decision). I have been in contact with a prolific potential supervisor for over 5 months, and hear this prof is a great mentor.

I applied to only three schools because I had been in contact with the professors there who shared similar research interests. I didn't get good replies from the many professors I contacted from the other programs.

NB: Because you haven't gotten a response from a prof. in a program doesn't mean you wouldn't be funded.

Just felt I should post this as an encouragement to hopefuls. This process can be really stressful, especially during the long wait for decisions (Dec - April). But remain diligent, and I assure you that it is worth it. The system works here; your hardwork is duely rewarded, and opportunities are numerous despite being an international student (although it has its disadvantages too ).

Package your application well by highlighting your strengths, take time to carefully review your statement of purpose, ensure your recommenders submit their assessments in time, etc. Also, don't be afraid to contact the program's coordinator if you have any questions (best time is during US work hours).

N.B.: Most Decisions for funding are made between February 2021 until resumption, so don't feel out of place reading my post. Many Fall '21 apps are still ongoing.
Also don't be intimidated by any profile you see online or anywhere. Do your due diligence and hope for the best. Don't underestimate the value of your SOP and recomendation letters.

Regarding other schools, that question is mostly optional and so I leave mine blank.

You can use WES Unofficial to convert your 5-point CGPA to a 4-point GPA (link below). If it exceeds 3/4, you meet the requirement for many schools in the US which requires some documents (check the program's website). Regarding scholarships, your overall profile has to be strong (research experience, awards/scholarships, personal statement, resume, etc). You also need to reach out to professors who share similar research interests. For Fall 2021 resumption (August, 2021), many deadlines are in December and January. Some schools are waiving GRE requirements, but you need to confirm from their website. Reading many pages on this thread would be very informative for US apps.

Your profile looks good. Congrats on your score. Yes, it is true that Ph.D. students have higher chances of getting fully funded than a Master's student. Taking the Ph.D. route needs commitment, so you have to be confident that this is the route you want to take. Some Master's students get full funding too.
I would advice that you start contacting Professors with similar research interests via email. You'll find samples of these kind of emails online (cold emails). Keep it short and straight to the point. Include your resume and transcript. Emphasize your research skills. You could also get info regarding admission and funding from the Grad coords.

Once you are sure of the schools you will apply to, do so early (most deadlines are in December for funding consideration). Highlight your best xtics because you would be competing against a lot of people.

You don't need a first class result through all your semesters in Uni to get a final First class CGPA. Regardless, I'd advice that you calculate what you need (just as you have done in the picture) to see if it's feasible. Just get a list of the remaining courses you have to offer from the handbook or a senior and assign different grades to them(As mostly). If you still have a first class, then you're good to go. But this means you'll have a lot of work to do. My advice if it's possible is to get it as soon as possible and then maintain it (say before your final year). If it's not possible, still work hard to have a very good CPGA (4.2 and above). Some scholarships and opportunities consider your CGPA and not just your calss of degree. Also build skills that can aid you in the future, since good grades aren't just enough nowadays.

From my experience, I used the statement of account from a Naira account (But you could confirm from your school's bursary). If the account isn't yours and an affidavit of sponsorship is needed, you can state the amount in Naira on the affidavit alongside the USD equivalent.

Thats one of the mistake I made in my life and still regretting it till now. First class is a waste of time and thoughts. If you are connected, not an introvert, then you have a chance, if you are not, please I beg you, while in university, concentrate on things you can do that would bring you money and make you happy in life. Just make sure you don't go below second class upper.

I wish I did this when I was in the university, I was busy making sure I was doing well in academics, I also registered for a 4years Arabic course which I finished. I wish I knew my advisors were merely myopic, I wish I had concentrated my energy on learning TECH skills.
I wish I had used my school fees to purchase Tech equipment and learn the skills, some of us fall into the category of bad advice. I regret the day I saw my result and it was full of A's in 100level first semester, that was my motivation and every body started telling me I would made a first class up and down, and telling me not to relent. I wish I had relented, but I was stupid to keep pursuing nonsense

Unfortunately, I disagree with you@Modestgal. @steve0979 Please, get a first class if you can, but definitely not at the detriment of building relationships and learning other skills that would help you. A First class may not guarantee you a job (where merit isn't considered), but opens you to many other opportunities not only within Nigeria. Nigeria may be a truly failed state, but that doesn't stop you from exploring opportunities from other countries.
You have to keep hustling in this life especially when you have a great result like that. I got a First Class in undergrad and I can tell you it has blessed me with so many opportunities (scholarships, Jobs, etc) and life lessons (like keep working hard and hustle pays). I am still reaping these benefits four years after . First Class was not easy, but you made it. That's the same way life is hard, but you need to keep pushing. Better to have a gun you don't need, than have none when it's needed the most!

Those materials may be kinda obsolete. There should be more recent materials. Check page 286 or so or posts by elevatedmind. It's in a Google drive Link.
In my opinion, getting a great score after one month's preparation may signify you're a genius . You would most likely need more than a month. Averagely, 3 months is sufficient depending on how fast you improve. Many of us here didn't pay to prepare, but just studied the free materials here. Only pay when you're sure you really need someone you're confident in to teach you.
Your CGPA looks good. Other aspects of your application need to be very strong; standardized tests, SOP, recommendation letters, work or volunteering experience, leadership, etc.

You need to know what the estimated cost of living is over there and if this stipend offered covers for it. Also, find out what tuition fees would not be waived, which may be your health insurance. It's not uncommon that you may not receive stipends for the whole year as a TA and a lot of times funding would be renewed once you have met all the stipulated requirements for it, except there is no funding available from the department.

So I took the GRE on 1st November at Jkk center in Lagos. Had a score of 299, Q-152|V-147|AWA-3.0.

I was so disappointed with my score, I was discouraged about furthering any of my applications. You know, that ginger just disappeared, I was loath to even get recommendation letters from my proposed recommenders. However, I would like to highlight some of the must "dos" and "don'ts" in preparing for the GRE. Please forgive my blunders, also these are just my views.

Some would argue that the GRE is damn EASY even going ahead to compare with JSCE level. But others state different, saying that GRE is so HARD. Well, you can not be sure until you test your legs in it, right? I am not trying to sound like some fake motivational speaker, but the GRE is a relatively easy test. The GRE is a standardized test, meaning they are restricted. They have a standard, they have a particular number of tricks up their sleeves. So the goal must be to discern/identify as much tricks as possible before the test day.

For the Quants, acing the GRE requires three things: 1. Concept 2. Speed 3. Discernment

Concept is the actual knowledge you need to know, the rules, formula, theories, method of approach you should know. Speed is completing the task within a specified period of time, you should know of course, the GRE is a timed test. Discernment, meanwhile is the ability to quickly see the answers by inspection, ability to quickly know you’re solving in the wrong way, ability to quickly strike off wrong answers, and the ability to be able to make correct guesses. This is the most important. The gist is if you know all the concepts, and you are fast, but can't discern, you will keep falling for the tricks laid down by ETS. You can finish a section with 10 minutes to spare and get a 9/20. I was so good with the concepts but speed and discernment were my Achilles heel.

There are several prep companies with different books, a lot of them. They all have their weak points and strong points. So number one is the official ETS materials; the trio of the Official guide, official quants practice questions and the official verbal practice questions. You should be over familiar with the content of these books. You should’ve solved all the questions there. All of it, they are the most trustworthy folks. You also need the GRE Maths review, they are also from ETS.

For quants, it’s a worldwide concession, Manhattan 6 books and the 5 lb book of practice question are the best for the concepts. Then you need to watch Magoosh lecture videos. It’s not really about reading, it’s about solving questions. So you should pay attention to questions and HOW THEY ARE SOLVED. Very important. HOW THEY ARE SOLVED. You should watch the Magoosh practice questions videos for this. There are different ways to solve a question and only one ETS way of solving.

The verbal section doesn’t have a formula, no fixed pattern like quants. Just there to frustrate good people. But it’s the GRE. So it can be aced also. For Verbal, Manhattan is quite weak, but you should try to read them (books 7 and . For RC which is the toughest set of questions in verbal, Kaplan is the god. Kaplan chapter 7. For SE and TC, you need to memorize vocabs, a lot of them. Use Magoosh Flashcards on your phone, if you have more time, you can check out Manhattan 1000 and Barron 1000 word list. That should be enough. Help your pacing by answering SE and TC questions first within the first 10 minutes, then the remaining 20 minutes for RC. Also, short passages before long passages.

For AWA, the best is Princeton review.

The point is you don’t need plenty materials. You don’t. In fact, some materials are point blank bad for you. They don’t set ETS-like questions. Don’t use anyhow material you see or mock test you see. Whatever it is you are looking for, is in Manhattan, Magoosh, Kaplan, Princeton, and the ETS materials. That is all. THAT IS ALL. Others are just repetition or bad for you. Don’t spend time going through several sources, reading same thing over and over.

Conclusively, PRACTICE! PRACTICE!! PRACTICE!!! You don't want to be like me who prepared for GRE for aggregate 5 weeks with an 8-4 job. Of course you want to pray about it. Believe me it works. You’ll want to be assured that the Almighty has your back, not even just for the GRE but even graduate studies as a whole.

Create time for yourself, but that doesn't mean you have to stop living life. Be happy. Don't kill yourself. You don't need overnight, don't let it affect your life. It's a terrible thing to be sacked because of GRE overnights. It's just a test. People have gotten full funding with 299. I know there are schools I can apply to.

Be objective and consise please. It is a long narrative.

I have a girlfriend whom I have been dating for up to 10 months now. She has all the qualities of wife, friend and a partner. I mean, she prays for me, supports me and do many things that places her above average.

I've two issues that are bugging me;

First is, I just graduated from the University and started to follow the road map I designed for my life. I am hardworking, so I started doing business immediately after my defense. Interstate exports of perishables. While I was in school, I made a lot of money doing designs for students; I am a UI/UX designer. The problem here is that I can't account for all those monies I made. A lot of expenses especially for my girlfriend. Even till now, I am supposed to send her some money but will I continue like this? I need stability in my business and need to save more and need capital for the last mile logistics company I want to set up next year.

Second issue is; I recently returned from an event I attended in Lagos some days ago, I came back very late and was grossly tired. While we were chatting, she asked me some questions which I told her I was very tired and eventually, I slept off. My phone beside me till the next morning. Fast forward to yesterday, I told her of my intentions to concentrate more in building for the future - it doesn't mean our relationship would be off. She started asking questions like "do you need some space?" "Am I bugging you?" She also said I don't "speak her language enough" language here is bonding, intimacy and closure. I was surprised at her response.

I noticed she'd be online for a long time and won't reply me on time, so I asked her who she was chatting with and she replied someone. I ignored her. This morning she called, while we got talking I asked her about the person she was chatting with. She told me the guys name. And asked if I will forgive her of anything, I said yes. She now said, she was introduced to the guy and they got flirting from the day I came back from my journey and told her I was tired and needed to rest. Her excuse was that, I pushed her to and she just wanted someone to speak/talk to.

Now, my question is, Should I move on with my business and focus, or, should I continue with the relationship? I don't want to be with someone that gives up on me easily.

P.S I love her so much. And she does too. We've through a lot together.
