BusinessBlackberry Maker Gives Up On Consumer Markets by Shinor(op): 12:31pm On Mar 30, 2012
Struggling BlackBerry smartphone maker, Research In Motion (RIM), is to leave most consumer markets and focus on corporate customers.
The move came as the company reported a loss of $125m (£79m) over the last three months, with total revenue down by 25% on last year.

TravelRe: Arik Suspends London-abuja Flight From The 25th March by Shinor(m): 3:29pm On Mar 16, 2012
Should Arik close down, I will come speedily to one conclusion. Nigerians can't run a decent airline business. Before Arik, It was Inter Continental owned by the same guy who owns Victor Vanni Security. The company folded up. OKADA. BELLVIEW. ALBARKA. SOSOLISO. ADC. CAPITAL. All dead.
Last Year Air Nigeria made noise that they were coming to Gatwick Airport from September 1st. They didn't do jack and failed to apologise. Is it that we cannot operate an airline? If we struggle to operate a scheduled bus service guess an airline will be an uphill task
The best local airline in Nigeria today is Indian owned and run - DANA.

Go the traditional way. Write an epistle to Bishop introducing yourself, your background and your future plans for life in general. Use scriptures to back your thesis. This should not be shorter than 4 foolscap pages in legible handwriting no text language or wafi slangs. Queens English recommended. For very serious statements, use Latin. Download English to Latin online translator. DO NOT MENTION THAT THE DAUGHTER TOLD YOU HE DOESN't LIKE NON YORUBAS.

If this story is the real truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth, THIS IS THE END OF D'BANJ's CAREER.
D'Banj's kind of music will not cause any storms in America. Slowly he will die out.
He remains a largely Nigerian / African act and NEEDS A PRODUCER THAT UNDERSTANDS THAT TERRAIN - DON JAZZY. The only Nigerian artiste that can make it outside Nigeria is Innocent Idibia aka TUFACE.

@Samoo01. Thanks for your contribution.
I couldn't help but respond after reading your line that what most people use the internet for in Nigeria and indeed a greater part of Africa is socializing. This is really unfortunate. As the world grows smaller everyday via these same devices, a lot of people are failing to realize that we are all being judged with the same yardstick. If companies can relocate their call centres from the US to Ghana, why won't they judge a Ghanaian or Nigerian graduate against a US graduate? At the end of the day, it's either you are in or you are out. If you can't measure up, you'll fall out. It is left to individuals to equip themselves. We can no longer blame the university we attended.
But as you rightly stated, to them its all about pinging, EPL or La Liga.

Well done guys and a special thanks to the poster.
Before i opened this thread, I knew it will not extend beyond page 1 despite being up on the front page for sometime now.
It does not talk about sex, football or phones and so it will be avoided BY THOSE WHO NEED IT THE MOST.
You guys don't realise what this thread has done to me. I flew into Nigeria to hold our International Young Leaders Academy last August in Ilorin and the very first assignment I gave was for the 30 or so participants to read and summarize articles from a newspaper. I was shocked to hear from all of them that they were reading a newspaper for the first time. And these guys were SS3 students. So I wondered why they got their information from? I almost lost hope but with this thread I know there are people out there doing the right thing.
Knowledge is power as they say. Read to gather information.
Whenever you have the opportunity, google any subject. Thank God for wikipedia.
I currently use You Tube and Google to do extra lessons for my 7 year old son. Even though we live in England, I have shown him what a Tsunami looks like from You Tube videos.
We have not flown in the Airbus A380, but I have shown him official videos of what the plane looks like. There are too many tools out there for anyone to feign ignorance.
Believe it or not, there are news magazines that you will read and at the end of it all, you will sound more coherent than a masters degree holder from our Nigerian universities.
And just to add that if you desire to speak properly, spend time listening to radio - BBC World service. At least you don't DSTV for this. Listen and imitate the way the presenters speak. No funny gobble. Just plain simple English.

@Samstyler. You are the biggest fool of the Millenium.
Just one example. China has the largest number of English as a Second Language ESL teachers working there because they have found out that English is the world's accepted medium of communication. Infact once you qualify as an ESOL teacher, you look to the far east for a job. Be quoting baseless shit there.
So the boy will write WAEC in Igbo? Ok now go on, mumu like you
EducationRe: Ss3 Student Opts For Pidgin At Oyo Assembly Probe by Shinor(m): 12:48pm On Feb 16, 2012
@onyxo76. Jah Bless you.

Now back to the matter at hand. What do we do with SS3 students who can't express themselves in simple English. The rate at which people abbreviate words in Nigeria is sad and they carry that into the exam hall. If this is unchecked, Nigerian companies will be hiring graduates from Kenya to come and work here. There is an urgent need to address the failings in the educational sector.
WAEC and other public exams are conducted in English language. If a student cannot read and understand the instructions and the questions, that student has automatically failed.  Yet we have schools all over Nigeria where teaching is done in the native tongue and yet we are surprised at the WAEC / NECO failure rates.

From Outstrip
I don't subscribe to spending the whole weekend in the kitchen either but it really should not be this complicated.  If you get back from work at about 8pm everyday then your husband really should be part of this process. What in the world are you guys going to do when the babies start coming. Sometimes I wonder how my husband and I survived the first couple of years but looking back now I realized that we ran the home like a freaking military operation. Everything was planned in advance for everything to run smoothly but we did it all together.

That's the foundation. Plan everything.
Following that, your husband must ACTIVELY PARTICIPATE in running the house.
I cook, and get my my 2 kids aged 3 and 7 ready for school and drop them off. That is my own daily contribution as my wife's office is 2 hours away from home, On days when we are both tired we eat take away BUT NOT ALWAYS. I didn't come to London to help chinko buy his house cash down. I also do the weeks ironing in advance.
Perhaps washing machine and dishwasher might help you. Me I no get dishwasher? What will baba Ijebu do with dishwasher? If not that the water can be bitterly cold I would still be washing my clothes by hand ( just teasing)

Adopt these and you should be fine.
Speaking from 10 years experience Lol lol

@lilrukevwe. Thanks for this contribution.

Education is a venture in which a lot of people are involved in, there is needed talk about changes and development but it never came. When I hear a parent saying "I am sending my child to a better school so that they can get a good job" I cringe.

Our educational system has totally lost its value and usefulness truely when I was in school I was told that the teaching profession was a STOP GAP.

But a lot of the decay we find stems frm the fact that the "parents" have failed to instill the desired discipline in their wards. I pray that our skool system improves.

Parents, Well I mean a lot of parents have abdicated their responsibilities. The parents of today are the ones who enjoyed the public schools of the 1960's 70's & 80's. Yet they watch by as institutions have degenerated into hell holes. And it is sad when they even boast " I can never allow my kids to go to public schools".
You know one of the problems facing this country today is INSTEAD OF FIXING A PROBLEM, WE SEEK EASY ALTERNATIVES. Nigerian public schools went bad, parents ran to private schools. Private schools go bad, they went abroad ( South Africa, UK, Ghana, Kenya ) and now you will find Nigerians in schools in UZBEKISTAN. Instead of us rallying together to make our schools the envy of others, we are running to them. God help us.

EducationRe: Can Educators Reveal Their Experience With Nigerian Students? by Shinor(m): 8:14pm On Feb 13, 2012
@Outstrip. I felt exactly the way you felt but that led me to take a major decision to be involved in the future of our current students.
All blame should not be dumped at the doorstep of the current students and teachers.
The current crop of uninspired teachers were the disgruntled students of a few years ago who read EDUCATION because they could not get into their first choice course. Also all the years of ASUU strikes have taken its toll on the quality of graduates produced. it is sad no one is pointing accusing fingers at ASUU for the role they played in destroying the future of the Nigerian graduate through incessant strikes and archaic teaching methods. How can a lecturer dictate the same course note for 10 years ? These crop of teachers have been joined by the graduates who roamed the streets seeking an oil company / bank job and only turned to teaching as a last resort. So you can see we have institutionalized problems already. Now how do these hapless teachers motivate a bunch of students who are daily bombarded with stuff on TV / Radio glorifying the easy route to success? BBA etc.
I seriously doubt if there are any training / refresher courses that teachers MUST attend after a certain number of years.
Are schools inspected regularly? I dare to say even if we have an inspection and grading system for schools, it would be abused with inspectors demanding and collecting bribes before grading schools accordingly.
Coupled with this is an inept and inefficient government who seem to prefer a total annihilation of the educational sector.
Two years ago I started Protege Leadership Academy ( www.protegeleadershipacademy.org ) after one of my visits to Nigeria to conduct a recruitment exercise for a British company. The quality of CV's I received from graduates made me weep.
The average Nigerian is the smartest person in the whole world.
Currently Nigerian girls are topping in the sciences in the UK ( girls category ). This used to be the exclusive preserve of Chinese girls. So I believe there's nothing inherently wrong with the ordinary Nigerian student. He is just a victim of his environment.
People let us join hands. What can you do? Every little help is required. I travel to Nigeria to hold a Young Leaders Academy programme to build leadership capacity in the current generation. I collect books from British Schools and donate them in Nigeria and Ghana. There's a lot we can do. Return to your secondary school and mentor someone today.

But I see GEJ being isolated by the day. Come to think of it no serious statement of support for GEJ from any high ranking senator / house of rep leadership.

DSTV has structure, experience and vision. A few of our companies lack these. Thanks all the same for your contribution Brother. Have a nice day.
BusinessRe: GTBank Shuts Down HiTV Premises & Puts It Into Receivership by Shinor(m): 7:14pm On Nov 24, 2011
Shouldn't be saying this BUT saw it coming. A lot of posters have have said it. HiTV was built on bold face bravado and less planning and like most things Nigerian, crashes before you say BARCELONA. So sad. All the Entrepreneur of the year title given to Toyin just because he started HiTV. In Nigeria we dont even wait for 10 years to critically analyse a thing before we start shouting we have conquered the world. That was how they were calling Alistair the guy who set up BEN TV in England - the Nigerian Ted Turner. Is BEN and CNN in the same category? And to see people like Dele Momodu shouting " Nigeria's Ted Turner" shows Nigeria is doomed. We need to go back to basics and re-evaluate the reason for being.
Toyin Subair was part of Nu Metro also. That one too died less than 5 years after they came to Nigeria.

PoliticsRe: Goodluck Jonathan Should Resign! by Shinor(m): 6:50pm On Nov 07, 2011
A nation gets the kind of leader it deserves.
During the last electioneering campaign, I navigated this site daily consuming nauseating posts by pro GEJ sycophants.
I was appalled to realize in this day and age, an educated or seemingly literate populace will vote for a candidate based on nothing else just his name.
So if a candidate with the name Prosperous Country contests the 2015 elections will Nigerians in their usual gullible state vote for him?
You voted GEJ now the guy has shown he is nothing than bad luck.
Do you know that we have never lost the amount of youth corps members since the inception of the programme like we have lost under GEJ?
But since Nigerians wanted luck well there you go. Eat your luck

Where a stores player kicked the ball from the centre and as the ball headed towards Abiola babes goal, the referee Olanrewaju ( I think that was his name) pointed to the centre without the ball even crossing the goal line. The game was abandoned with both sets of players attacking the referee.
Thanks for the memories.
Remember IICC V Stores in Ibadan. I was very happy that day because sooting fans used to arrogate the monopoly of violence to themselves but when stores supporters INVADED ibadan, Sooting fans bow.

TravelRYANAIR Mend Plane Window With Sellotape by Shinor(op): 11:28pm On Oct 24, 2011
Looks like Britain has finally fallen on hard times. if na naija dem do dis kind ting, the British government would have declared our airspace unsafe. But as na dem do am, na all correct.
Anyway what do you expect from a low budget airline?
Wont have been surprised if the pilot had had to come down and help push the plane to jump start it. JET A1 fuel don increase

A RYANAIR plane with 200 passengers on board had to turn back after tape used to patch up a pilot's window came loose.

Passengers watched in horror as ground crew put the tape around the edge of the windscreen shortly before take-off from Stansted, Essex, to Riga, Latvia.

The Irish Aviation Authority said the tape was being used as an extra precaution to secure a new window seal.

But the pilot aborted the flight after 20 minutes when the tape started to become loose and made disturbing noises.

Ryanair insists normal procedures were followed throughout, and there was no danger to passengers or crew.

But one passenger, Anthony Neal, 33, of Bromley, Kent, said: "We were kept in the dark, and were terrified. I could see guys taping in the windscreen with what looked like duct tape or gaffer tape.

"We were in the sky, then the pilot said due to damage on the windscreen, we were going to have to turn back."

Former pilot John Guntrip said: "This could have been disastrous, the pilot could have been sucked out mid-air if the window had come off."

A spokesman for Ryanair — whose boss is Michael O'Leary — said: "We do not comment on routine technical issues. All Ryanair flights operate in accordance with approved safety standards."

The IAA said it had completed its probe.
