Luckymama: It’s currency value and easy availability of credit that makes it look that way.
Take for instance, a nursery school teacher earning like 23k per month in Nigeria. She moves to Cananda and starts to earn 17 dollars per hour. That’s like 1,600 to 2880 CAD. In Canada that’s poverty level. House rent is about 1,800 to 2,500. So she probably has to share a house with 2 or 3 people. Groceries a month will probably cost her like 500 CAD if she is prudent. Electricity water and heating bills will cost like 150 or so. Taxes will be like 15 to 20% depending on where she lives. So she has absolutely nothing extra. She’s just barely managing to survive. But with that money, she can buy a small Toyota on credit and be paying small small maybe 200 to 300 per month. By the time she pose inside snow in front of her Toyota, her colleagues will be dying of jealousy. Wow, that will be excessive. A single person has no business living in a CAD1800 -2500 home except they plan to share (That's the cost of a 3-4 bedroom family home ). They can go for bachelors CAD1000 or one bedroom $1200-$1300. They can also share a three bedroom family home costing $1800 into 3 and pay CAD600 monthly Avoid homes where you pay for heating because heating is expensive. Why is the tenant paying for water bill in an apartment Groceries for a single person should not be more than $250 except they like frozen meals and eating out. Food isn't expensive in Canada. And if she every goes above budget and there isn't food, she can locate the closest community Centre food bank, Salvation army, Fire of God church or Shepherds of good hope mission. Reduce Electricity Bills by cooking during OFF-PEAK hours after 7pm. If she is finding it difficult to pay electricity bill contact OESP or any Provincial authority that can assist with Electricity bills No point buying a brand new car and paying on credit, Buy a used car and pay cash This advice is for those trying to settle into Canada, unemployed or at minimum wage. I knew you were in British Columbia based on the rent you were quoting !! I hope you are having a great time. Please when you are done with school join us in the East or maybe Alberta. It does get better. Best of luck |

AK481: He who allows them to use his head to break coconut will not eat out of the coconut.
The igbos have always stood behind who they believed were brothers since the independence but at all times when they shed their blood to protect the minorities in the south south, these people always betray them and brag it to their face.
All this are about to change as the igbo have washed their hands off the so called south south by leaving them to face the gigantic north squarely. It will be recalled that the agitation of biafra have unanimously agreed to go with only 5 south Eastern state in other to avoid extra and irrelevant baggage.
Final pib outcome :3% benefit to oil producing states and the oil producing states are those states that have pipeline transporting oil or crude . Igbos taught Ijaws NOTHING. The North is schooling the south. Not an ideal situation but that is what is happening Can Igbos fight this fight alone? Let go of the desire for collaboration. Can we stop opening threads bashing other tribes. If we bash everyone and call them names, how do we get collaboration? Personally I think because the South South has oil and can attack the locations they are actually equipped to fight the gigantic North alone, if they want. |

Abiboss: For the Uber thing, I think that might not be possible according to my research I learnt that one need to have a license before you can drive over see, and also it takes up to two years to be given a license. How to get a drivers license in Canada. 1. Quickly learn and get your Nigerian license in Nigeria while planning your immigration process 2. When you land, take Nigerian drivers license to Nigerian embassy in Ottawa or call if you do not live in Ontario, and ask for drivers record 3.Go and study for driving written exam. You can study this in one week 3.Take drivers record to any driving center 4. Immediately they collect it, take your eye test right there and go write your written exam G1. 5.Get scores immediately, get G1paper license right there. At the same time register date for drive test G license 6.If you drive well and pass G, go and start uber 7.if you fail G go and register immediately for G2, Pass G2 and collect paper license right there, use the license to buy car, use it to practice, come back for G after 3-6 months and pass it 8.Go and start Uber Please this advice is not for people who went to Canada without learning how to drive. I keep saying paper license because that is what you pick up immediately and use to wave at the police if you are stopped . Plastic license will be mailed to your home after two weeks |

CanadaCars: I have lived in Canada since 2001, If anyone tells you that live was too hard for them in Canada that was why they moved back to Nigeria, it is either they are just lazy poor planners or because they have something tangible they can count on in Nigeria to help them back up again. Canada is not heaven life is hard anywhere on earth it is not easy anywhere on earth. The difference is that with careful planning and hard work you are sure to achieve your goals, all the resources one need to succeed are available and reliable. Imagine a country where the government support your College and University education if you can't afford it, including paying for your feeding, rent/mortgage, and other living expenses for you and your family. This is done for all citizens and permanent resident without any iota of discrimination, irrespective of your background. And upon graduation they give you one year before you pay back only between 20 to 25% of what they gave you. And payment is done at your own term. This is just one aspect, such support is there too if you are into business. I can't even imagine someone leaving Canada for Nigeria with those terrible living conditions in that country even with all the money in the world. Let me like this post too. They are not Healthcare or IT professionals Try it for Ernst & Young and KPMG on LinkedIn. Are you seeing what I am seeing? |

Benwems: It’s a lie for Canada but you UAE it can be true. Canada have unemployment benefits for residents if they are unable to get a job. They have both federal and province unemployment benefits plus they have food bank for people needing free food. You are just lying. Plus you hardly find a gangster in Canada because Canada is a reserve society. Those gangster stuff is mostly USA plus there is low racism in Canada. Either your friend or whoever is just lazy or they are disturbing him from his village to come back to Nigeria. Because there are a lot of jobs in Canada especially if you are in the IT or medical field plus Canada government can give you light loan to start up a business if you have a good proposal. Thank you sir, I did not want to talk about the government loan for new immigrants because Nairalanders would accuse me of lying. Let me like your comment jare |

Something is fundamentally wrong in this story. If neighborhood is infested with gangs, move If public school is infested with gangs (I have never heard this) change school. I find it hard to believe that between the man and wife they could not find call center jobs or sales associate jobs that would have taken care of rent and bills. The 600 paid to their child would have sorted out feeding Lets assume a very terrible situation. Oga is working in poorly-paying stingy call center or as a sales associate earning $2000 after tax Madam is working in the bakery part-time at Loblaws earning $16 per hour. Lets say she works for 4 hours so she can stay with the children. in a month she will earn $1700 after tax. Combined income in $3700. Plus monthly payment to child $4300 Rent for 2 bedroom $1600 Phone bills for two $70 internet $50 Food $600 Electricity $100 Landlord pays water, garbage and gas bills Monthly bus pass for two $250 New clothes $100 Netflix $14.99 for two screens. If one screen $9.99 SAVINGS MONTHLY $1515.01This is in the worst situation. The only thing I can think of that could have happened here is the man rented a luxury apartment. I know because I also made this mistake - I rented in Rockcliffe village when I first arrived

Principal was queried for allowing pictures get released. The House of rep member for that area requested that owner of the NGO take down the phots and videos, but it is too late. Someone will go on monday to find out if the school was roofed and block walls put up as promised by the house of rep member. If this is not done, we may have to make it go viral once more or start a fundraiser. I just hope that the government will allow private individuals access to fix this school though. |

MALIGNANTGuest: You are correct. I left a lucrative stressful & insultive job in Naija. I don't regret my decision so far. I was ROBBED for up to 6 times in Nigeria. All were at Gunpoint who knows I wouldn't have been alive to type this at the 7th attempt.
Why won't I pay bills for the things I consume, unlike Naija where I paid NEPA BILLS for 2years without a transformer in my street not to talk of light.
Most NIGERIANS are beclouded by Greed. Why won't you pay for the things u consume? Are those countries running charity or what?
At least you have got a Good life which is the Best. You can access the best hospitals. Best Roads.
Again, it depends on the country u are emigrated to. Don't expect ROSES when you leave fire for fry pan. Imagine leaving Naija for LIBYA.. Let me like this post. I can't get it why Nigerians want to use amenities but do not want to pay for them Part of why I left was because my colleagues were being kidnapped left, right and center. Very terrible things happening to the women including the pregnant ones. The job was very lucrative but I didn't want to be the next. Edited to add: This thread has even reminded me of how armed robbers accosted me with my innocent 7 month old baby. It was 6am and I was going to drop my child off at my parent's place before going to work and before I knew it a gun had been pointed at me. They used me as bait to force my parents to open the doors so they could come in. Even overpowered the security man. Lord, thank you for saving me. |

Why would one leave a lucrative job to go abroad and work menial jobs?. If combined family income is up to N1 million naira monthly perhaps no need to move
Not all abroad is "abroad". Choose the country wisely - it is triple hard when the country is not English speaking.
Be careful how you get into the country.
Understand that in your first year you will be tested, but it gets better. Take advantage of ALL the social assistance programs available. Electricity support to pay for electric bills eg OESP, Rent support to pay for rent, Works assistance to help you get by while you look for work, University loan assistance e.g OSAP to go to school to upgrade, Food banks/ Churches for free food, Salvation army for free food and clothes and utensils, Provincial help for furniture. Equipass for reduced transportation costs - splits transport cost in half. Do not raise shoulders, take the assistance first. If you have children below 18 apply for CCB, every child is paid 500-600 CAD monthly. OHIP for free healthcare. Do not compare yourself with anyone in your first year(This is for Canada)
Edited to add: Find and join a Nigerian Telegram or whatsapp group for your area. They will help you.
Do not do a menial job more than 6 months, even 3 months of menial work is enough to show employers that you have Canadian experience, Even if you came in as a refugee, take a loan/grant and study to be a PSW/CNA, take a loan and buy a car and drive uber or apply to work in a call center. |

Aderewah: One tribe is irrelevant politically, their most powerful elites are governors who are fulani slaves, their agitation leader ran away from the country and was still captured like a chicken thief, they couldn't even create a regional security agency against fulani massacre, they make mouth and chest beat and their guerrilla commanders were eliminated like rats.
The other tribe are relevant politically and call shots, their political elites are elder statemen with a lot of influence, agitation leader will never run away in the face of intimidation, created regional security system despite fulani crying on TV, never chest beat but plan with wisdom and strategy.
We know who the real cowards and empty barrels are. Your plan to divide the south won't work for long. I know there are so many impostors on Nairaland, but guess what?
