First time I'm hearing they can use engine oil for steering pump.

Our mechanics are the reason why people spend valuable time and money repairing vehicles all the time.
I remember an incident where my cousin is always changing the engine belt in his highlander to the extent that he will have like 2 spare ones in the trunk.

He complained about it to me but I didn't pay much attention to it, I just told him to look for the original serpentine belt for his vehicle.
When the complaint became too much I looked at the vehicle and noticed that he has been buying belts with 6 lines (6pk)while his vehicle should use 7 lines(7pk)

When I confronted the mechanic he told me confidently that it doesn't matter if the belt is 6 lines or 7 lines that what is important is the length of the belt and fitment, he showed me many vehicles in his workshop with 1 Line missing.

....and this is not the normal road side mechanic .

Any ATF oil should work for you. You can equally search for the recommended steering fluid for your vehicle online.
