I dunno, it just depends on how passionate I'm and the point I'm trying to make.

But really and truly, I hate writing epistles cos more time I can't be arsed to proof-read anything. Hence I don't like quoting articles or referencing anything to buttress my points. I'd rather just post what I think and try to find an example elsewhere I can correlate my POV with.

Obama won the election, why didn't he just sit on his arse arguing that Bush wrecked the economy and increased the budget deficit?

As far as some folk are concerned, Tinubu should be worshipped because his party kicked out indolent thugs. And having said that, what did he really do? He outbid the other party; its not like people are loyal to Tinubu because of a magnificent ideology, the loyalty is out of 'who can pay more'. Yet some would make us believe it is something 'babara' (hope i got the spelling and usage right).

Not much has changed for the average person; his lot isn't better. He isn't going to better schools or accessing better healthcare. Cronies or politicians are getting richer. Yet the average person will be on the hook for these loans that are being accumulated by these governors.

What irks me even more is a comparison with Awo because Awo didn't become PM but Tinubu joined forces with Buhari to win an election against someone most Nigerians were tired of. Absolute balderdash.
Applause.

As for me, I gave Tinubu the benefit of the doubt cos of the noise he makes about true federalism - till he got smoked by Saraki and Buhari finished him off with 36hits combo.

He needs to retire and take the rest of the other old Yoruba folks with him - and let young people that are selfless with drive and well defined ideology take charge.

As much as some of these pseudo-fraternities in Nigeria smear their own names and activies so much that they get regarded as cultists/cultism.

Most Nigerians and even Nigerian media have not necessarily been able to get the proper application of 'cult(-ism)'. These school ganags have no religious inclinations or orientations whatsoever and the use of 'cult' as a descriptive term confuses me at times.

What Soyinka started was in no way a cult, it was a fraternity with a metaphorical philosophy of life as a sea voyage with its turbulences and treasures requiring coorperation to make the most of it. It is not as though Pyrates are worth rooting for anyways. Bunch of c0cx.

Well, I see one guy in a tuxedo with a walking stick.

Aareonakakanfo in my head looks like the Pied Piper for chics. When you see him coming - you have to hide ya wives/gfs/sisters/daughters, else he'll seduce them and take them away with his magic pipe loool.

I think the whole cultism thing in Nigeria is more of a glorified gang culture. There is absolutely nothing occult in what they do and you can't call them fraternities. Wole Soyinka described his own group as a fraternity similar to the black Greek ones albeit with a nucleus that is more African than anything Greek.

I can't argue that TheVoice made a lot of sense, so did many others.

The past discussion has been an enlightenment period for me. Thanks shymmex for posing the question[s].

I can't adequately form an opinion about Tinubu, but like many politicians, he has never been a fan of mine. However, my favor or disfavor shouldn't cloud Tinubu's present weight in Nigerian politics. He has brought Yorubas [like Gbawe mention] to the forefront of Nigerian politics, be it a selfish interest or a political interest]. Now the real question is: Now that we're here, what are we going to do with this position?

I really think we should find a way to minimize the North's political weight and to bring the power back to the South [be it SE/SS/SW]. A region with no added value shouldn't have so much power.
Bwahahaha @ bold.

https://stream1.gifsoup.com/webroot/animatedgifs2/3754041_o.gif

I'm sure you followed the last election and you know how the country is structured. And you're also following the dynamics of things under this government and the power-play. You better leave that alone for now and let's focus on how to get SW states out of the doldrums before they all go bankrupt. grin

Anyway, I've got an idea on the next topic to discuss, but I'm sorry you won't be part of it. Hopefully, Aareonakakanfo and raumdeuter will take charge of the topic. I think we need to discuss why Yorubas aren't producing that many footballing talents in Nigeria. And I'll probably cite the huge number of Yoruba teens and schoolboys playing for the academies of the different EPL clubs as the preamble by listing their names, and clubs. That should be interesting. grin

Shymmex I know you rate Katsumoto but it is better to be principled and honest always. I never inferred anything he claims I did and you should have the innaye devotion to honesty to call wrong as wrong instead of cheer for it.

Katsumoto may be able to do no wrong in the eyes of some but I would hope there are still some here able to upbraid him when he is wrong as I have never shied away from doing. It is very injurious for him to claim falsely that I "sully" the name of Fawehinmi, Soyinka et al.

Dayokanu/Ramdeuter and Akanbi Edu are some of the fews who always stand up to Katsumoto while others give him a free pass to say what he wants whether true or, in this case, totally false. The fact is that Soyinka, Fawehinmi et al neve got far despite their involvement, at one time or the other, in politics while Kashamu and others like him are elected political leaders. When I make this point, which is a statement of fact, how is that to be interpreted as me insulting Soyinka et al when they are Yorubas I respect immensely?
Lool.

Yes, I do look up to Katsumoto, and I rate him highly. However, we do have our disagreements, especially when it comes to Margaret Thatcher. Katsumoto, alie? grin Regardless, we just tend to see things from the same perspective most times and he did school me on a lot of things on here. Ditto eGuerrilla and mayoroflagos - though I disagree with the both of them sometimes on certain topics as well.

I rate Big Dayokanu/Ramdeuter highly as well and you'll never see me say anything bad/disrespectful to him. However, I believe he's partisan cos he supports APC and I don't have a problem with that. I just want to see submissions that will analyse the precarious situation all our states are in and proffer solutions. Not excuses. We owe the future generations that.

As for Uncle Akanbiedu, I see him around from time to and I do cosign his posts sometimes. But his submission on this thread is disingenuous and I believe that's cos he's an APC member. We're not kids and no one can pull the wool over our eyes. There's a problem and we can't deflect it.

So how can we fix this problem before it consumes everyone?

I honestly don't know why the Big Uncle OnReflection is ignoring this thread lool. I know he has more than enough to add with documents, but I believe he's just holding back for reasons only him can explain. grin

Firefire:
Marxism theory of growth emphasizes the role of capital accumulation. To him, economic progress was accompanied by a change in the whole society and its framework.

While capitalism thought is characterized by the desire of the capitalists to secure as much of surplus value as possible and by competition, thereby claiming ownership of means of production.

I agree that capitalism is not totally bad but adding nepotism and cronyism is the ill of the drive.
Capitalism isn't the problem and to run a state effectively you'll always need welfare as part of the package. Even the US, which most will call the most capitalist country, is also a big welfare state. I think between 30-35%.

Awolowo was a socialist. He developed his form of home grown socialism that is not in any way like that of the Communist countries.

Tinubu is not an emperor yet. For now, he is just more of an imperial capitalist that might become a monstrous emperor, if care is not taken.
Erm, would you call Tony Blair and Clement Attlee socialists? I believe Awolowo brought a lot of foreign investors to the western region and he believed the private state should control certain sectors of the economy, while it's the responsibility of the government to invest in areas that enhance growth and development, especially education and health.

As for Tinubu, that's why we need to start speaking now. If we're actually getting the desired results - I won't even mind. However, when folks start incurring monstrous debts and states are running based on deficits - then it's problematic and we've to speak.

You should realise that the ideologies of the 2 men are different. Awo was a socialist, which is a typical yoruba structural orientation and ideology while Tinubu is a capitalist to the core.

The difference in ideology explains the achievements of both politically and in terms of visible development.

Will it have been possible for Awo to achieve some of his welfarist and socialist ideologies in modern times? I strongly doubt it.

Will Tinubu have gotten away with his imperialistic capitalist tendencies in the contemporary times of Awo? Capital N and O.
Awolowo wasn't even a socialist like the Soviet type of socialism, the Lenins of this world, or the Karl Marx of this world. So he would've thrived in modern times since the most developed countries in the world in Scandinavia use the same model. And most European countries are welfare states.

Also, capitalism isn't the problem if well managed. But is Tinubu just a capitalist, or more of an emperor who thrives on nepotism and cronyism? - I'll let you answer that.

Gbawe:
Shymmex, Buhari is not and has never been part of the old guard in anything but age. He does not share their ideology and is more of the welfarist, 'power to the people' school of politics while OBJ, IBB, Abacha, Danjuma et al are autocratic for the sake keeping power within a small set of hands and with a leaning for copious self-aggrandizement. Atiku, IMO, is actually a different creature entirely and more a benevolent and relatively liberal AGIP (any government in power) who would probably move Nigeria forward if he were president but not as quickly as we should progress because he can and will be compromised. This is why our political elites have fought tooth and nail to demonise Buhari for decades to make him appear unelectable. It is the fact that GEJ is shockingly terrible that created a paradigm shift in the thinking of our leaders to the extent many thought "f**k it. Let us get behind Buhari before GEJ takes us all down". Buhari and OBJ, for example, have nothing in common. OBJ only swung behind Buhari because of the personal and intense hatred he had developed for "disrespectful" and "ungrateful" GEJ. Also, OBJ and others like Atiku who would have previously worked against Buhari realised that GEJ was a very dangerous individual on course to destroying Nigeria. They chose the lesser of the two devils, i.e Buhari, out of self-interest and not because he is like them or of similar mindset.

Akanbi Edu is right because Tinubu, by working selflessly to install Buhari, assisted the demolition of the structure holding Nigeria back. Tinubu shows he is not about money and pecuniary gains because he knows Buhari enough to understand that his Presidency will signal the end of 'business as usual' which is even capable of hurting Tinubu and his own interest. Yet the man went ahead, using his personal wealth and clout, to ensure Buhari won. Even the APC primaries that produced Buhari was the work of Tinubu because virtually all SW delegates voted for Buhari - more than was the case for even Buhari's own Northern base.

These are the sort of development that truly typify what Tinubu is about for those who wish to look at issues dispassionately and pragmatically. Tinubu has nothing to gain from a Buhari Presidency other than the desire to see the good governance. Jonathan could have made Tinubu filthy rich if Tinubu agreed to work for his win. The billions of dollars and inducement (like pipeline protection contracts for gani Adams and Faseun) he doled out across Yorubaland would have gone to tinubu who Jonathan coveted as a kingmaker and wanted to get on board more than all others put together. Yet Tinubu could not be bought and he chose the project, i.e Buhari and APC win, that represented less money, less influence and less chances to consolidate an 'empire' many tell us that Tinubu cares about more than anything else. It does not make sense and the more one looks the more it is obvious the Yorubas should feel very privileged and lucky to have tinubu.
Sir, I like your argument, though I don't agree with some of the points you posited. The only reason why I challenged the other poster is cos he's being economical with the truth. We're not kids and a lot of us can discern things from afar. Buhari would've been the president, with or without Tinubu and that was obvious way before the election. And I did allude to that when he visited the Archbishop of Canterbury.

Apart from the Northern hegemony/oligarchs as a group - OBJ is the most powerful person in Nigeria and the proper old guard who has been at the corridor of power in Nigeria since the end of the civil war. If you understand Nigerian politics from the international perspective looking in, you'll see that. And OBJ supported Buhari and he's active in this government. Ditto the rest. Atiku who has also been there for a long time was also instrumental in making Saraki the Senate president. Then you have a Buhari who has also been around since the end of the civil war. So how did anyone stop the old guard?

Also, Tinubu has been cut to size by this government. So we need to leave whoever is ruling at the centre alone cos he has no influence whatsoever there and focus on the non-performing governor and their utter poor fiscal policies.

There is a possibility that the next US election is going to be between a Bush and a CLinton just like it was 24yrs ago

The US is not the bastion of modern democracy.
