Politics › NHRC Boss Tackles Oritsejafor by simpleseyi(op): 7:43am On Oct 02, 2014
The Chairman, Governing Council of the National Human Rights Commission, Prof. Chidi Odinkalu, has described as excessive the number of security agents attached to the President of the Christian Association of Nigeria, Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor.

He wondered why the CAN president would move about with a large number of security operatives, whom he alleged oppressed motorists.

The human rights crusader said this during a lecture at a youth-based forum titled, ‘The Platform Nigeria,’ convened by Pastor Poju Oyemade of the Covenant Christian Centre in Lagos, on Wednesday.

The topic of the lecture which was televised live on Channels Television, on Wednesday, was “Saying no to the right to impunity.”

He said, “I was driving on the road one day when I saw a large number of policemen and civil defence (Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps) in a convoy. I thought it was a governor or President that was passing by because the security operatives pushed my vehicle aside.

“I was surprised to discover that it was the president of CAN and I even tweeted about it the other day.”

He said it was unfortunate that motorists were being oppressed by those in power and those who ought to be on the side of the masses.

Odinkalu said Nigeria’s style of politics and the nonchalant attitude of the masses were to blame for the country’s decay.

He said the country would do better if it shunned ethnicity.

“Today almost every state government would want Alhaji Aliko Dangote to invest and pay tax to it. However, the moment Dangote says he wants to run as a senator, they will ask him if he is an indigene. This should not be so. I am happy that Lagos is different in this regard,” he said.

He said the Nigerian culture encouraged impunity and corruption, urging Nigerians to stop worshipping political office holders.

“Why do you call them Excellency or honourable? Call them governor, call them senator. It is called public service. If there is no public, there will be no service,” he stressed.

He said it was unfortunate that even as the country marked its independence, many towns had been seized by terrorists.

Odinkalu further berated the Federal Government for failing to send a delegation to visit prominent Islamic cleric, Sheikh Ibrahim El-Zakzaky, whose three sons were killed by soldiers in an extra-judicial manner.

However, when our correspondent called Oritsejafor on the telephone, the CAN president said he had no response to Odinkalu.

“Please I don’t know what you’re talking about, I have nothing to say,” he said.

Politics › 60 Soldiers Face Trial For Mutiny Today by simpleseyi(op): 6:40am On Sep 30, 2014
Another set of 60 soldiers are to be arraigned before a General Court Martial by military authorities in Abuja on Tuesday (today) for mutiny.

The soldiers allegedly committed mutiny on August 4, 2014 by refusing to join troops in Maiduguri for “an operation.”

Their arraignment which is to take place at the Sani Abacha Barracks in Abuja comes as The PUNCH gathered on Monday that some of the 12 soldiers convicted on September 15, 2014 by the GCM had notified the Court of Appeal of their intention to challenge their sentences.

The GCM headed by Brig. Gen. C. Okonkwo had sentenced 12 out of 18 soldiers facing trial guilty of mutiny among other offences and sentenced them to death. Five of them were however discharged and acquitted and one sentenced to 28 days’ imprisonment with hard labour and reprimand.

The soldiers were charged with mutiny among other offences, including attacking the former General Officer Commanding the 7th Division of the Nigerian Army, Ahmed Mohammed.

A copy of the charge sheet filed against the 60 soldiers was obtained by The PUNCH in Abuja on Monday.

The charge sheet revealed that the soldiers, comprising two corporals, nine lance corporals and 49 privates, are to be arraigned on two counts of conspiracy to commit mutiny and mutiny.

The accused allegedly committed the offences at the Mulai Primary School, opposite African Independent Television in Maiduguri, Borno State on August 4, 2014 by refusing to join “111 SF Bn troops” led by Col. E.A. Aladeniyi to Maimalari Barracks in connection with an operation.

According to the charge sheet, they “conspired to commit mutiny against the authority of 7 Division,” an offence said to be punishable under Section 91(1) of the Penal Code Cap P89 LFN 2004.

The soldiers were also accused of committing mutiny which is said to be punishable under Section 52(1)(a) of the AFA CAP A20 LFN 2004.

The charges are said to be triable in the GCM under Section 114 of the AFA Cap A20 LFN 2004 and punishable under Section 91(1) of the Penal Code Cap P89 LFN 2004.

The two corporals are Andrew Ogolekwu and Saturday Efa.

The charge sheet reads, “Count One: Criminal conspiracy to commit mutiny triable by the General Court Martial by virtue of Section 114 of the AFA Cap A20 LFN 2004 and punishable under section 91(1) of the Penal Code Cap P 89 LFN 2004.

“Particulars of offence: In that you at Mulai Primary School Camp opposite AIT Maiduguri on or about 4 August 2014 conspired to commit mutiny against the authority of 7 Division.

“Count 2: Mutiny contrary to and punishable under section 52(1)(a) of the AFA CAP A20 LFN 2004.

“Particulars of offence: In that you at Mulai Primary School Camp opposite AIT Maiduguri on or about 4 August 2014 refused to join 111 SF BN troops led by Col. E.A. Aladeniyi (N/9695) to Maimalari Barracks in connection with an operation.”

Indications had emerged on Sunday that lawyers seeking to file an appeal challenging the conviction of some of the 12 soldiers by the GCM had not been able to have access to them.

There were reports that the convicted soldiers had been moved from the Defence Headquarters Garrison, Abuja to a detention facility at the Directorate of Defence Intelligence, Lagos.

A Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Chief Godwin Obla, who brought the process of appeal on behalf of three of the convicted soldiers, said his chambers had made unsuccessful attempts to get in touch with them without success.

The soldiers are Iganmu Emmanuel, Steven Clement and Andrew Ngbede.

Obla told one of our correspondents on the telephone that the military did not volunteer information on where the convicts were being kept.

He said that the inability to locate them had hampered the completion of the appeal process as they had not been available to sign some documents required for the appeal.

The SAN said, “We have been trying to get them (the soldiers) to sign for the process; and because we have not been able to get them, we have not been able to complete the process; there are things for them to sign.

“Nobody has been able to tell us where they are being kept; nobody is volunteering information; nobody has been able to tell us where they are.

“We are just hearing that they have been moved to the Directorate of Military Intelligence Cell in Lagos.

“We will make the move so that the process would be filed on their behalf.”

Obla also said that the filing process at the Court of Appeal had not been completed because the findings against and the sentencing of the soldiers by the GCM had not been promulgated and communicated to them.

He said that the filing could only be made after the findings and the verdict of the court martial had been promulgated and communicated to them.

Obla said, “The findings and sentence by the General Court Martial need to be promulgated and it is to be communicated to the convicts. It has not been communicated to them.

“It is after the findings and the sentence have been communicated to the convicts that the filing can be made.”

A lawyer from Obla’s law firm, Mr. Enokela Onyilo-Uloko, said that the law firm of a former President of the Senate, Chief Amah Ebute, was handling the defence of six of the convicted soldiers.

He listed those being represented by Ebute’s law firm as Jasper Braidolor, Friday Onuh, Alao Samuel, Linus Alan, Ifeanyi Alukagbe and Amadi Chukwudi.

He said, “Nine of the soldiers are already before the Court of Appeal; the appeals are within time; we are awaiting the hearing date from the Court of Appeal.

“A motion for Stay of Execution is being filed to make sure they don’t tamper with them.”

When The PUNCH sought to know from the Director of Army Public Relations, Brig. Gen. Olajide Laleye, if the conviction of the soldiers had been confirmed by the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Kenneth Minimah, he said he was not aware.

“I am not aware if the judgment has been confirmed or not; I don’t have that information,” Laleye said

The PUNCH had reported on Friday that the Army might soon arraign 13 soldiers for cowardice and failure to obey orders from their superiors to advance at the (war) front.

The soldiers were said to have been directed to join their counterparts at the 7 Division, entrusted with the responsibility of coordinating the ongoing counter-terrorism operation in the North-East early in the year.

Family › He Ignored My Pregnancy Because Of His Wife’s Pregnancy by simpleseyi(op): 7:35am On Sep 26, 2014
Please, help me out of this predicament. When my mother asked me to leave home and stay with her cousin and family members in Lagos, I am sure she did not bargain for what has happened to me. My mother is too peace loving to want this kind of life for me.

She has been doing it all alone, since our father died 11 years ago when I was just nine, my elder brother was 11 while my younger sister was just six. She wanted us; her children to have a better life, that was my father’s desire before he died prematurely. Despite the fact that the little he had and left for us were taken away by his family members leaving us with little or nothing, my mother will stop at nothing to make sure we were educated.

She was single handedly responsible for my elder brother’s schooling. So when I wrote and passed with flying colours my senior secondary school examinations and her cousin promised to help out with my schooling, she was relieved and happy to allow me go with her, though, not without she was very sure it was what I wanted.

I did not write UTME, because we had agreed that I would stay a year at home, so that my brother’s fees would not be a burden. My mother’s cousin runs a very big unisex fashion outfit in Lagos, and we all agreed that it would be nice if I learnt fashion designing, while waiting to write my examination.

When we got to Lagos, my auntie’s husband did not agree initially for me to learn in her outfit. He said I should go to a regular school and prepare for my examinations without distractions. I pleaded with him to allow me do the training. So I trained in the mornings and attended extra-murals in the evenings.

After about six months that I have been going to my auntie’s shop in the mornings, she summoned me into her office one evening when one of her regular customers who also happen to be our church member was with her. When I entered, she asked me to take a seat, I was scared because my aunty is very strict with her work, I thought I had done something wrong. She asked me to relax after which she spoke to me about her visitor’s mission.

According to her, he came to ask for my hand in marriage. I was shocked! My hand in marriage? A born again member of a pentecostal assembly who is already married? I told my aunty to tell him that I was too young for that as all I wanted was to go to the university.

My aunty asked him to leave as she would speak with me and give him a feedback. When he left, my aunty called me back into her office and told me the benefits of dating him and having a child for him. She was the one who told me that he had been married for 15 years without a child and wanted a young innocent girl who would marry him and give him children.

I asked if it was right because he was still married to his wife and a Christian. My aunty asked me to forget these observation of mine because according to her, I needed to learn a lot. When we got home later, she raised it with me, I gave her the same answer. She shouted at me. When her husband asked what the issue was, she said it was nothing and she warned me not to tell her husband.

That was how we started. She even made me see why marrying and having a child for him would ease things for my family and I. Eventually, I agreed but not without his firm promise that he would be responsible for my education. My aunty promised to speak with my mother, she however made me promise not to speak with her husband about this for now.

This was how we started our affairs. Uncle Kunle; that’s his name was nice to me and very helpful with funds for my mother. I wrote my UTME and passed. I discovered I was pregnant the day I went to write my post UTME.

I told my aunty how I was feeling and she took me to the hospital where it was confirmed that I was pregnant. She said we should wait till after church on Sunday that she would find a way of telling him. This was because; we haven’t seen him for two weeks prior to then. We later learnt that his wife had been ill. Both of us were however shocked when Uncle Kunle came out and gave a testimony that his wife had conceived.

It took me all the strength I had in me not to faint when he announced this and everyone was happy and cheering. I couldn’t weep or cheer. When we got home, I asked my aunty what next and she asked me to be patient. We have been waiting patiently for him for almost two months now.

My auntie’s husband is beginning to suspect that something is wrong. He has been asking, but my aunty said I shouldn’t tell him anything. Please, what should I do? Kindly help me. I also wanted to go home and see my mother, but my aunty won’t allow me.

Family › Why Would My Husband Watch Pronographic Films? by simpleseyi(op): 7:16am On Sep 26, 2014
Dear Taiwo,

Kindly help me out, I am newly married. My husband and I got married three months ago. We are both Christians and we had a no-sex relationship. Although, he is not a novice; I had never had sex before our marriage.

Though, our wedding night and my first time at sex was not what I expected, he told me that I would eventually grow to love and enjoy sex. To the glory of God, I am six weeks pregnant now. I am however shocked at the fact that I caught my husband watching pornography few weeks after our wedding.

He thought I had slept; he brought out the compact disk from the bed side locker. I have never opened the locker before, so I wouldn’t know what was there. He lowered the volume of the television set to the barest, so I won’t hear and he kept looking at me on the bed to see if I was awake.

I pretended I was sleeping and when he went to the office the following day, I checked the locker and found dozens of these films therein.

What I found and caught him watching really disgusts me. We are both Christians for Christ’s sake. And to think he was sneaking to watch these films. I really don’t know why. I am yet to tell him what I saw and the fact that I saw him watching the film. What should I do? I am not comfortable about this development as it is against my conviction. We just got married and I am pregnant. Help me.

Tinuade.

Family › Former Vatican Envoy Placed Under House Arrest. by simpleseyi(op): 8:11pm On Sep 24, 2014
The Vatican announced on Tuesday that it has placed a former ambassador under house arrest while he faces charges for "serious acts of abuse of minors."

Jozef Wesolowski is accused of molesting young boys during his stint as the pope's official representative in the Dominican Republican. Wesolowski had been appointed to the post in 2008 by Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI.

The former envoy, who was defrocked by the Vatican in June, is one of the highest-ranking church officials to be accused of abusing children during the Catholic Church's widespread and costly sexual abuse scandal. It is the first time a top Vatican ambassador has faced such charges.

Wesolowski's arrest, the Vatican said Tuesday, "is a result of the express desire of the Pope, so that a case so serious and delicate would be addressed without delay."

Francis has pledged to maintain a policy of "zero tolerance" for Catholic clergy who abuse children.

Wesolowski's case provides a high-profile chance for the Pope, who has been accused by some victims' groups of downplaying the sexual abuse scandal, to take concrete action against one of the Vatican's own.

The Vatican said that Wesolowski suffers from an unnamed but medically documented health condition, and will be placed under house arrest in Vatican City, which is a sovereign state.

Pressure had been building on the Vatican to proceed with criminal charges against Wesolowski, a Polish native ordained by Saint John Paul II, since the accusations against him became public.

That pressure intensified when The New York Times reported last month that Wesolowski had been seen walking freely about Rome.

The United Nations Committee Against Torture has also urged the Vatican to move swiftly on Wesolowski. A report by the committee in May noted that Poland had reportedly asked for the archbishop's extradition.

Under Vatican law, Wesolowski, if found guilty, could face a maximum sentence of 12 years in prison.

Politics › We Killed Shekau In Nigeria – Cameroon - Nigerian Army Lieing Again. by simpleseyi(op): 6:57am On Sep 23, 2014
In a rare public show by the Cameroonian army (Armee Camerounaise), photos of Shekau were made public alongside a statement claiming he was killed during a cross-border raid deep inside Nigeria by its military.
A Cameroon military source, according to Cameroon Concord, said on Sunday night that Shekau was killed following an aerial bombardment of his hideout inside Nigeria.
SHEKAU
Purported photo released by Armee Camerounaise (Cameroon Army) of the Shekau it claimed died from Cameroonian fire, from the portal of Cameroon Concord.
On the other hand, the Nigerian Army is also laying claim to the same feat but without photographic evidence yet. The Nigerian Army said its soldiers might have killed Shekau in Konduga, a town some kilometres away from Maiduguri, the Borno State capital.
According to a report posted on its
twitter handle, DHQ said yesterday that, “there was no raid whatsoever in any part of Nigeria’s territory in pursuit of terrorists as claimed in some reports allegedly quoting Cameroon military authorities.
“All operations on-going in the environs of Konduga and all associated border locations within the country are completely being undertaken by Nigerian troops.”
Reportedly, the Cameroon armed forces since Sunday have been in serious combat against thousands of Boko Haram fighters trying to enter Cameroon via Fotokol from Gamboru Ngala in Nigeria.
This came amid confusion over Shekau’s identity as military experts are trying to ascertain whether the dead ‘Shekau’ was Isa Damsaka or Bashir Mohammed, who are both top commanders believed to be posing as Shekau.
Meanwhile, efforts to exchange some of the abducted Chibok school girls with Boko Haram prisoners have flopped again.
The Nigerian military claimed that its troops might have killed Shekau on September 17 during a desperate attempt by the sect to capture Konduga as part of their plot to eventually march on and capture Maiduguri.
“It is getting more certain that the terrorist commander who has been mimicking Shekau in those videos is the one killed in Konduga on September 17, 2014, the military revealed.
The military, however, cautioned that “the process of confirming the dead body we have is the same as that character who has been posing as Shekau is ongoing. He is definitely a prominent terrorist commander. I don’t want to say anything about this yet, please.”
The military source insisted that the resemblance between Shekau and the corpse in their custody is too striking to be a coincidence. They cited his facial marks, beard and teeth in addition to the recovery by Nigerian troops of some of the armoured vehicles and Hilux SUVs that had featured in previous videos of the prime suspect. The source assured that the Defence Headquarters will soon address the nation after full investigation of their latest discovery.
The counter-claims by both countries have raised some posers: Who actually killed Shekau and where was he killed and how authentic are the claims?
Confusion over Shekau’s identity
Indeed, confusion reigns supreme over Shekau’s identity. Strident efforts by the Nigerian military high command to establish the true identity of the top Boko Haram leader who was shot dead last week, continued in earnest yesterday, even as the video of the slain man was obtained exclusively by Vanguard.
The military, it was learnt, had been cautious in making a formal announcement that Shekau had been killed as a similar declaration last year, was instantly countered by the sect, following the emergence of another ‘Shekau’ in several video posts on the Internet.
Vanguard gathered from top security sources that although a bearded man, who resembled Shekau in several material details, was shot dead in Konduga last week, the military was not sure whether the slain man was Isa Damsaka or Bashir Mohammed, who the security agencies claim had been mimicking the real Abubakar Shekau, said to have been killed since June 2013.
The apparent fear over the death of Shekau, in the battle for Konduga, it was also learnt, has caused some disquiet in the Boko Haram camp, especially as the video of the dead commander surfaced on the internet yesterday.
In the six-second video, the critically wounded ‘Shekau’ was seen lying on the ground writhing in pains as men in military uniform and civilians surround him with some voices saying, “Waste that man! Waste that man!”
However, the Australian negotiator, Dr. Stephen Davis, who claims to have worked closely with Abubakar Shekau, said yesterday that he was convinced that the real Shekau was killed since June 2013 by the Nigerian security agencies.
Shekau killed June 2013 — Davis
Davis, in a mail to Vanguard, said that Abubakar Shekau was killed around June 19, 2013 while they were close to concluding a peace deal on the Boko Haram insurgency.
Davis said: “I continue to hold to the position that Shekau was killed on or about June 19, 2013 when we were close to concluding a peace deal. Videos immediately prior to that time were produced using a “fake” Shekau. The fake Skekau is Isa Damsaka. It was confirmed to me by Boko Haram that he was killed in the recent military engagement at Konduga.
“Most members of Boko Haram have never seen Shekau. They believe what they have been told that Shekau is their leader. The real Shekau is dead. The Shekau the world has been seeing in videos is a “fake” and Boko Haram fighters have been fooled. They have followed blindly.
“The message of Boko Haram purifying Islam is also fake. When the Boko Haram leaders broke the news of Shekau’s death in June last year, they said he had diverted from the Holy Qu’ran through the kidnappings, rapes and beheadings. The fake Shekau continued these atrocities under the patronage of the sponsors and escalated their terrorist activities. Shekau is dead but they will try to find another to perpetuate the lie.
“This is the time for Boko Haram commanders to come forward and release the captive girls. There are Chibok girls and many other girls who have been kidnapped. Let commanders come forward and release a large number of girls as a first step towards a peace dialogue.
“I have no doubt the sponsors will try to prevent any commander releasing the girls as part of a peace deal. The pressure must therefore be put on the sponsors so the commanders can come forward.
“Shekau was killed on or about June 19, 2013 as we were concluding a peace deal. I have spoken at length to several senior people who were present. The Shekau impersonator recently killed was Isa Damsaka. Boko Haram leaders have been using him for quite some time to make their propaganda videos. The script is written for him by another commander which he then reads as he delivers his message on-camera.”
How Shekau was killed
Details of how Abubakar Shekau, the impostor and leader of the Boko Haram terrorist group was killed in a shoot-out with Nigerian troops in Konduga on Wednesday, September 17 emerged, yesterday, with military sources disclosing that he met his waterloo in an ambush reminiscent of the type the sect had been using to hack down Nigerian troops.
Vanguard gathered that during the first attack on Konduga, where hundreds of insurgents were taken unawares and killed after over seven hours of fighting with several of their colleagues, arms and ammunition captured, the military commanders strategically urged his captured members to send a message to Shekau that they (insurgents) have killed the troops.
Before the captured insurgents were urged to make the contact and deliver the message, the military commanders had promised them that their co-operation would play a role in the level of punishment to be meted to them after the battle, hence they felt reassured.
Also, the captured insurgents had disclosed that Shekau usually moved in a convoy of cars painted in military colours while he sits in a MOWAG Armoured tank with Boko Haram inscription on its front.
When Shekau was contacted, his captured men spoke to him in Arabic, assuring him that they had taken over Konduga, thereby giving him the positive signal to proceed from Sambisa Forest. To convince him further, some of his men that were captured were asked to sing the victory song in Kanuri language they normally sing at the background.
Having convinced himself that the messenger was his chief courier in such situation and the message was authentic, he and his followers made for Konduga, heavily armed with anti-aircraft weapons, general purpose machine guns, several AK-47 rifles and other IEDS’.
However, on entering Konduga town, he and his followers were encircled by strategically placed and heavily armed Nigerian soldiers. Immediately he contacted the messenger and discovered that something was amiss, he ordered his followers to start shooting in all directions.
This spurred the Army Commanders to give the directive to open fire. When he discovered that the fire power of the Nigerian Army who used both infantry and artillery weaponry was overwhelming, he jumped out of the MOWAG and made to escape.
But Nigerian soldiers spotted him and opened fire on him, inflicting serious injuries on his legs. It was learnt that he also received bullet wounds in other parts of his body as he was said to have bled to death.
Military sources had on Sunday night disclosed that Nigerian troops scored a strategic victory in the current battle against terrorists operating in the North-East on September 17.
Swap of Chibok girls with Boko Haram prisoners flops again
Meanwhile, it has also emerged that efforts of the security agencies to free the 219 Chibok girls from their Boko Haram captors has failed again.
Vanguard learnt from top security agents that the deal to free the girls, who have spent 162 days with their abductors, had broken down almost irretrievably as a result of the inexplicable decision by the Boko Haram side to ask for impossible conditions.
One of the conditions put down by Boko Haram at the last minute was that the Federal Government must account for and produce 18 of its top commanders said to have been captured and detained in several detention facilities across the country.
Although the government was willing to free some of the Boko Haram detainees in exchange for the girls, a top government source, who was privy to the discussions, said that many of the Boko Haram commanders could not be traced.
The top government official said: “Boko Haram commanders suddenly demanded an equal man-to-man exchange instead of the agreed total girls for 16 Boko Haram prisoners. Also, of the 16 prisoners, not all of them could be traced by the government side.
“The exchange of the Chibok girls with the Boko Haram prisoners was to take place at an agreed location in Yola, the Adamawa State capital. But the true position of things as of today is that the talks have broken down.”
Answering a question, the government official said that Nigeria opted to bring in the International Committee of the Red Cross as a facilitator because of its neutrality and competence in facilitating such exchange of prisoners in many parts of the world.

Politics › STELLA WONDER - Remodelled Lagos Airport’s Air-conditioners Fail, Roof Leaks by simpleseyi(op): 6:35am On Sep 22, 2014
With an outlandish expenditure of N174bn, the government had aimed to bring the nation’s airports at par with their counterparts in the developed world, but passengers who use the busiest of the facilities in Lagos are not impressed with the work done so far, UDEME EKWERE writes

Passengers who regularly use the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos are not impressed with the state of facilities at the nation’s gateway despite the multi-billion naira remodelling carried out on the airport and others across the country.

The passengers are particularly not happy because of the high level of discomfort they are experiencing at the edifice.

It was gathered that some of the new facilities were no longer functioning properly, while others had falling into a state of disrepair.

For instance, passengers complained that the air-conditioning system at the arrival hall of the MMIA now worked abnormally, and that visitors coming into the country were being confronted with embarrassing heat at the lounge and up to the immigration point.

They also alleged that some parts of the roof were leaking, especially whenever it rained.

The recently fixed toilets, the passengers lamented, had become faulty as those, who wanted to make use of the conveniences, were being confronted with unpleasant sights.

Some of the passengers, who spoke in separate interviews with our correspondent, decried the failing facilities at the airport, adding that it was too soon for it to be in a bad shape after the much touted remodelling.

They said that having spent huge sums of tax payers’ funds to restructure the airport, it should not be uncomfortable for users.

A passenger, who just returned from Dubai, Mr. Isaac Femina, said he was disappointed that some of the facilities at the airport were returning to their old state.

He said, “I really don’t know why things do not work well in this country. It has not been long since we were talking about the huge amount of money spent on remodelling the airport; and now, you’ll notice that some facilities are not in proper working order.

“For example, the walkway belt, the one that propels you to move faster at the arrival lounge is not working anymore; if you get on it now, it is as if you are just walking on the bare floor. This should not be; it is too soon.”

Mr. Kunle Stephen, a businessman who shuttles between Lagos and the United Kingdom, said apart from the fact that there were some spots where the roof was leaking, the air-conditioning units around the luggage area were not working well.

Stephen said, “It is quite unfortunate, because you just see on paper that so much has been spent on repairs yet it doesn’t seem like anything is working. Imagine the ACs that should be the first thing that should work well are not. The other day, it was raining here in Nigeria when we got in and some parts of the roof were leaking! To say the least, I was embarrassed.

“To make matters worse, I came to Lagos with my spouse sometime last month and she had to use the toilet on arrival. But she ran out a few seconds later, saying she would manage till we get to town, because the whole place was leaking and there was water on the floor; it is really sad.”

Another passenger, Mrs. Toluwalase Jacob, said that even though she was a little impressed by some of the noticeable changes at the airport, she hoped the issue of the air-conditioning system would be sorted out soon.

She said, “Well, I think there have been some improvements with the work that has gone on here, because when I came in to Nigeria from London late last year, the situation was really terrible.

“It seems a little better now, but I hope they will look into the issue of the air-conditioning system so that the air will not feel so polluted all the time.”

A top official of the Aviation ministry, who did not want his name mentioned because he was not authorised to speak on the issue, said that it was not unusual for some of the infrastructure to wear out after a while, because of continuous usage.

He said, “Of course, you can’t expect the facilities to remain just the way they were because people are making use of them every day, and you know that some people are not very careful in their handling of public property.

“Also, it is important for you to know that the work is not done yet at the airport; it is still ongoing; there are still a few things that need to be put in place, and when it is done, I am sure that the passengers and airport users will be more comfortable than they are at present.”

Commenting on the development, the spokesperson, Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria, Mr. Yakubu Dati, said some construction work was still ongoing at the airport, which could have accounted for some of the difficulties that passengers were experiencing at the moment.

He said that on completion, users of the airport would not face as much inconvenience as they were currently encountering.

Dati said, “We are constructing the upper walkway at the arrival hall and the leakage is due to the construction work at the upper deck. When completed, the upper and lower decks will serve the arriving and departing passengers, respectively.

“That way, arriving and departing passengers will not meet as is presently the case. We apologise for the inconveniences this is causing.”

Over N174bn has been spent by the Federal Government on airport remodelling across the country in the last three years.

Following the removal of the former Minister of Aviation, Ms. Stella Oduah, there had been fears that the projects, which she initiated, would be abandoned due to inadequate funding.

However, the then Supervising Minister of Aviation, Dr. Samuel Ortom, had assured Nigerians that the ministry was making adequate efforts to ensure that the projects were completed within the stipulated period.

He had said, “I want to assure Nigerians that the projects will be completed. The projects are part of the aviation master plan dully approved by the Federal Executive Council. Every single project that was started in the phase one, two and three of the remodelling plan will be completed. It is a matter of stepping up our revenue generation.

“We have massive opportunities and if we are able to close the gap, we will generate enough revenue, and with additional funding from the Federal Government, we will execute the projects. I want to allay the fears of Nigerians that the projects won’t be abandoned. The debts and commitment are there but you can see the massive work going on in the aviation industry today.

“That justifies the N174bn debt. Remember that Rome wasn’t built in a day and there is no way we think we can generate this money within a week. But we intend not to embark on new projects so we can concentrate our energies and ensure we complete the projects started by my predecessor.”

The real problem is if you are a government that has failed and trying to win election using things like that. There will ALWAYS be people who would fall for such.
You are very right my brother, everyone has emotions, but some of us control ours just as the holy books advise us to. This government is dividing us along ethnic and religious lines and turning people like the original poster into morons.

I still think church-goers are senseless because all those that support this meaningless conspiracy theory are church goers and Islam haters. Christians are Christ-like, several events in the bible proved that Jesus Christ was a wise man, so Christians being Christ-like are also not dump. However, these religious fools that think that they are Christians because they bear biblical names or because they go to church every Sunday or because they know few verses in the bible; most times they put their brains in the cupboard and think with their anus.

LEADER of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria, Sheikh Ibraheem Zakzaky, has addressed the session of the United Nations Human Rights Commission over the Zaria Quds Day killings allegedly carried out by the Nigerian military on July 25, 2014.

Facilitated by the fact-finding team of the Islamic Human Rights Commission, the presentation was made live on internet via Skype through direct link with the UN Headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland.

Sheikh Zakzaky, according to Malam Ibrahim Usman, a media aide, was allegedly denied visa together with another key eye-witness during the Zaria killings, to personally attend the special session.

“The panel brought together members of the fact-finding team and key eye-witnesses, among them was Sheikh Zakzaky, who lost three of his sons in the massacre and Dr Musa Shuaibu, a doctor in Zaria, who treated many of the victims of the army’s attacks,” Usman said.

It would be recalled that the fact-finding team of the Islamic Human Rights Commission had visited Nigeria and compiled report, which documented the facts behind last July’s killings.

Obviously, Goodluck Jonathan and Oritshejafor have been smuggling arms and ammunition for the militants is South-South in preparation for a full-scale war against the united Federal Republic of Nigeria. This was how ex-Col Emeka Ojukwu started acquiring arms for the Biafran before he finally declared secession. We all know how the part one of the story ended, part two is about to start.

Goodluck Jonathan and Oritshejafor have re-started the project that ex-Col Emeka Ojukwu could not finish. The united Federal Republic of Nigeria is waiting. The North is strategising; we, the West are watching. When the South-South and South-East finally declare war on the united Federal Republic of Nigeria, the North will respond as appropriate. Brave men in the spirit of Muritala Muhammed, Theophilus Danjuma, T.Y. Oseni and co are still many in the North. The West will come and do the same thing we did between 1967 and 1970. The likes of Benjamin Adekunle and Olusegun Obasanjo are still many in the West.

If you think the South-South and South-East militants can face the united Federal Republic of Nigeria soldiers, navy and air-force; then I wish you goodluck. Politics › 2015: PDP Governors Endorse Jonathan by simpleseyi(op): 7:12am On Sep 18, 2014
Peoples Democratic Party governors on Wednesday evening endorsed President Goodluck Jonathan as their sole candidate for the 2015 presidential election.

The governors took the decision after their meeting at the Akwa Ibom State Governor’s Lodge, Abuja.

Before the meeting, the PDP National Publicity Secretary, Olisa Metuh, had announced that the party had fixed November 29 and December 6 as dates for the party’s governorship and presidential primaries, respectively.

The Chairman of the PDP Governors’ Forum, who is also the Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Godswill Akpabio, told journalists after the meeting that decision to make Jonathan their sole candidate was not challenged by any of the governors that attended the meeting.

The governors in attendance were those of Cross River, Niger, Kogi, Kaduna, Taraba (Acting) Gombe, Abia, Delta, Adamawa (Acting), Bayelsa, Plateau, Akwa Ibom, Enugu, Benue, Jigawa (Deputy), Katsina (Deputy), Sokoto (Deputy), Kebbi (Deputy).

The Governor of Jigawa State, Alhaji Sule Lamido, who is believed to be nursing presidential ambition, was absent.

It was however not clear if his deputy, who was in attendance, disapproved of the decision of the governors.

The decision of the governors is expected to be debated at the National Executive Committee meeting of the party, which holds in Abuja on Thursday (today).

Akpabio said, “The forum hereby endorses President Jonathan for a second term in office and resolved to support his bid for re-election come 2005.

“The forum urges all PDP faithful to support this gesture which should enable the President to become the sole presidential candidate of the PDP come 2015.”

The forum, according to him, also discussed the outcome of the governorship election in Osun State, which was won by the candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Mr. Rauf Aregbesola.

He said the governors were in support of the candidate of the PDP, Sen. Iyiola Omisore, to challenge the outcome of the election in court.

He added that the governors supported the result of the party’s primary in Adamawa State and called on the people of the state to support the Acting Governor, Ahmadu Fintiri, for the October 11 election in the state.

Also in Abuja, Metuh, who briefed journalists on the meeting the PDP leadership had with Jonathan on Tuesday night, said the primaries for the National Assembly would hold on November 22.

He explained that the dates for the presidential, governorship and National Assembly primaries were ratified by the members of the PDP National Working Committee in Abuja on Wednesday.

Metuh , however, said the dates were a mere proposal that was subject to approval by the NEC.

He said, ‘‘We expect all public servants, government appointees and elected party officials who are interested in contesting any position to resign their appointments seven days before the commencement of the ward congress election.”

It was learnt that sales of nomination and expression of interest forms for various elective offices, would be between October 27 and 28.

This, according to a source at the national headquarters of the party, was to enable public office holders who want to resign their appointments to contest elective positions to do so before October 20.

Delta State Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan, had told State House correspondents at the end of the PDP governors meeting with Jonathan that the party’s election guidelines for general elections dominated their discussions

He said, “Most of the discussions centred on the 2015 elections, that is, preparations of the party for the 2015 elections. There were presentations by the NWC . You know we will have our NEC meeting on Thursday(today) and the guidelines for the party were discussed.

“But most of the decisions will be taken at the NEC meeting . What we did here was to brainstorm on certain issues that will be presented at the NEC meeting. So, it is on Thursday(today) that a lot of the decisions that will guide us for the 2015 elections will be taken.”

Meanwhile, a prominent Ijaw leader, Chief Edwin Clark, has called for the adaptation of Jonathan as the sole candidate of the PDP for the presidential election.

Clark said this was necessary since the President had signified his intention to run, adding that “this is the practice in the United States of America whose democracy we are practising.”

Clark, who spoke with one of our correspondents in Abuja, said Jonathan deserved the ticket, having worked for the country since he assumed office following the death of President Umaru Yar’Adua.

Though the President has yet to openly declare his intention to run, some groups, including his ministers, have openly adopted him as their candidate.

The Presidency is also believed to be behind some of the groups, which are being coordinated by the Special Adviser to the President on Political Affairs, Prof. Rufai Alkali.

The former Governor of Gombe State, Alhaji Mohammed Danjuma Goje, was on Monday quizzed by the state Police Command for campaigning unlawfully in parts of the state.
Goje, now at the Senate who, it was learnt was invited by the state Police Commissioner Abdullahi Kudu Nma, for embarking on political campaign at a time there still exist a blanket ban on political activities.
The Senator, who was detained for over two hours at the state Police Command, spoke to newsmen shortly after his release.
He said: “I wasn’t campaigning but was rather consulting my constituents to know their problems and look into how I can assist them within my power and available resources.”
Goje used the opportunity to call on law enforcement agencies to be fair and just to all Nigerians.
“We are calling on the authorities and security agencies to be fair to all political parties. The Nigerian constitution allows for the existence of different political parties.” Goje pleaded.
He however said the discussions he had with the Police were fruitful, as they were able to understand themselves.
Police Public Relations Officer, Deputy Superintendent Fwaje Atajiri however revealed that the former Governor was only invited for questioning because he was moving about campaigning with a large number of followers, who were wielding dangerous weapons.
“Senator Goje was invited by the Police for a chat, which went peacefully. He came into town at the weekend, gave us a letter that he was attending a wedding but later we got to know he was holding a campaign rally at Kumo in Akko Local Government Area and some hoodlums were there with all sorts of dangerous
